Please welcome LSM mainstay and Washington Post games reporter Gene Park to Sacred+. So, here's the rub: Days ago, WaPo published an op-ed by its billionaire owner Jeff Bezos, of Amazon and Blue Origin fame. His essay came on the back of a deeply-consequential political decision he made on behalf of his paper, but the piece -- entitled "The Hard Truth: Americans Don't Trust the News Media" -- has potential ramifications far beyond that. It's in that space that we staged today's episode of Sacred+. Bezos talks a great deal about deep-seated bias, a lack of trust, and a other issues that plague not only mainstream publications we consult in our everyday lives, but the more niche flavor of entertainment 'journalism' too, and like George Lucas might observe, it seemed to me (Colin) like everything he was saying rhymed. Their problems are actually ours, too. We love talking about games media on our show because understanding how to best communicate to audiences is how our medium continues to push forward. But we also deserve a far better crop of people who are less ideologically captured, and more interested in delivering a dose of reality instead. This conversation isn't about partisan politics at all. It's actually about quite the opposite: Real issues that should interest us regardless of where we may sit ideologically. Ultimately, it shouldn't really matter, and maybe that's the greatest point of all.

So much irony in this, media lost its trust because people like Jeff bezos that share his same interests buy up different outlets

Brenden

I bet jaffee would be loosing his mind if he was on this podcast.. cause he’s a hateful person

Tom Cullen

Colin taking Bezos completely at his word is so naive. Almost purposely so. He's always denied the existential threat of Trump.

Tom Cullen

Also shout out to Kinda Funny for being on the right side of history

George Hall

A billionaire stepping in to change something the entire editorial board wanted to do… definitely not because he’s protecting his own issues.

Fatsloth

Not super relevant but Walz' controller absolutely was turned on. Anyone who has ever used an xbox controller would know that.

Otacon_Ocelot

Jaffe said “I don't know Matty like that I don't know” on X made me dislike him more ngl. People immediately jumped on me for calling him out.

Bartevious

49:30 on the pod. That right there. Good shit cobra Edit: great points all around on both sides. I love Gene and Colin conversations, they seem to differ greatly politically yet always house respectful and thought provoking discussion

Shawn Kelvey Jr

I thought this was a great conversation guys. I think you guys can go even deeper on the American people not trusting media. Especially on the exact moment that sent the ripple effect through all media.

Rufián

Based Bezos - dismantling the enemies within. Quashing their degenerate movement. Absolutely heroic.

The politisation of entertainment is a horrible thing. I would crawl on my belly to vote Republcan on Tuesday if I were American, but I love people and want everyone to feel included and cared for. However, the wokization of gaming, as subtle as it might be, being both cultural and political, is so painful for me to watch, and I would love nothing more for Western culture to loosen up again and truly turn post racial, post sex, and stop turning video game art into calculated pieces of cringy propaganda.

I appreciate and love all of you guys on LSM, and I don't care who you vote for, even though I wouldn't mind to learn about it. But I deeply appreciate Colin's stance on neutrality. The left and right are often both incredibly dismissive and hateful of one another, of different lifestyles and opinions. I always felt I'm a true classical Liberal but in my country I'd be called a Nazi as well for my political opinions, as centered as I feel they are. We should all stop calling each other names, stop trying to one-up on each other, and truly care for one another. Bottom layer, it truly is all one. Asking questions and wanting to know is extremely powerful and would be a start.

Not listened to the episode yet, but my read on this situation is that Bezos thinks Trump will win, or at least that he has a good chance of winning and he’s doing this for fear of being punished by Trump if WaPo endorsed Harris.

JT

Colin: we try to foster a community that embraces different political opinions. Comments on the podcast: Attack everyone and be wildly inflammatory for no reason.

Ethical mailman

I’m voting for Harris because I prefer her over trump. I dislike both. I have deep friendships with trump supporters and far leftists. I love and care for fellow LSM listeners regardless of their political beliefs.

AngelOfCake

Stunningly good episode. The biggest problem about the Bezos article is the timing. It's a bit conspicuous. It really needed to be written about sixish years ago. He's embarking on what could be a decades long project. I hope he has it in him. I wish him well. This is the man that upended retail and one of his companies hosts a good chunk of the internet. I'm curious to see how it pans out. The cynic in me suspects this was a letter to the shareholders though.

Cousin Kenny

Fantastic episode. FWIW- the KF “you’re not a best friend” mantra has been going on for years. They made it clear 5-6 years ago that conservatives were not welcome in their community or as listeners.

Haru Discourse

Love hearing these two talk about journalism

Dan Morgan

Brandon V, please seek help

Fat Matt

Good discussion. For the record, this type of brain rot does not affect all or most “left-leaning” or “Not Trump” voting individuals..

Joshua

Bezos demolishes Labour and has destroyed small business as well.

LastStandMedia

While I'm really against much moderation (and don't read the comments much anyway), Brandon V's behavior has been brought to my attention. He is permanently banned. -Colin

IronLion44

Also love every LSM member. This is a great episode.

Derek Williams

I listened to this episode while at work today, made my day go by so much better. Been really bogged down lately from all the nonsense that comes with social media and general internet discussion lately, which has also bled into the video games space over the years. It’s nice to hear a genuine conversation about the root of the problems we are seeing in these spaces online. Can’t thank you guys enough for providing this type of content on a regular basis.

RE Veilgaurdgate I was only concerned about the JarJar Binks sized twist that Matty was secretly a Sith Lord all along

Look Up 2:27 of Delusions of Grandeur - Glazed Donut Zero (Official Video)

Great episode! I will say that I do find the timing of Bezos’ op-ed suspect. It seems like there could be all kinds of motivations. Maybe it’s self-interested, but maybe he really is sincere about wanting to improve how news media is viewed. However, optically, even if you are sincere in that intent, you do seem to legitimize Trump’s claim that the news media is corrupt. At least, that’s how I can see it being spun. (btw I think his “corrupt” line is really just when he doesn’t like something they reported, regardless of if it’s provably true). But the political part aside, loved the discussion on internet brain rot. Been thinking about it so much recently. Good stuff. Never hear anyone else other than LSM pontificate deeply on stuff like this.

Tom G

Love the conversation and topic. I just wish you would’ve given Matty the respect to be the first one to address his situation on LSM so he can speak for himself. Colin I know you feel protective of him and you should I just feel like it takes some of the words out of his mouth when he gets a moment to address his situation. Otherwise, really appreciate the conversation.

Gene Park

Wow I’m glad everyone enjoyed the conversation. Wasn’t sure how people would take it, but it was actually fun and I’m glad that seemed to come off despite how awkward i need to navigate this topic.

WhatDarrenPlays

I look forward to this election cycle being over. This is so tiring.

Shadi Haddad

Just let these two have a weekly show about anything. Best chemistry in the entire company. I'd argue Gene is Colin's best dance partner in his entire career of podcasting.

Big Swingin' Rick

I'm a socialist and I feel significantly more welcome in LSM than KF

Ryan

Colin should press Jaffe on his refusal to back Matty, he did exactly what Colin describes someone doing/not doing for cultural reasons

Max Stahl

This was really good, guys. I'm ashamed to say I was a little surprised at how good I thought it was! Props to you both.

IronLion44

Matty is such a good dude and that is clear!🩵

Sam

Hearing Colin say LSM has Trump voters working absolutely staggers me. How do you think it’s my time to vote. Let me vote for the racist, sexist and 34 count felon who denied my democracy a few years ago. I just need that to be explained, how do you rationalise that in your mind?

Manuel Nascimento

Just wanted to say thank you for this particular episode. As an outsider (I'm 40y old and from Portugal), I've tried all my life to develop my English, but in the last like 5+ y in particular I've felt an increasing downtrend in intelligence in every media around the world, but none so much as what's going on in the USA, from my perspective. We need better and informed, rational journalism. 85% of the quick-reaction discourse on social media about anything is based on logical fallacies or other incongruous arguments that would fall apart if anybody gave some time to actually thinking about it. I urge LSM and Colin, in particular, to keep his level head and do the effort to not get affected by the craziness and keep being fair and intelligent. I've watched HBO's "The Newsroom" show and although I suspect it probably was romanticized to some extent, I found myself, whilst watching, so pleased with the idea of journalists striving to do their job to the best and their abilities, hoping to fight against the deluge of bad news, mistaken facts, ignorant perspectives, misguided aims... It's hard to be a human being striving for being rationally informed and rightly thinking - we need good help, not agents compounding the problem. Also: Mr Gene Park, I remember your video when Stadia was introduced where you were pressing the space bar on Destiny 2 and showing the noticeable like 1-2 seconds of lag before the jump showed on screen. This is way before LSM-Gene and I was so happily surprised to remember that when your name came up as a new member of LSM - keep it up! (as Brad would say) Am I the only one remembering this kind of things about the people we get our news / "content" from? I remember Colin from way before Kind of Funny and what really tuned me on to him was the news reporting and being good analysing and speaking about the gaming news. It's all good we love games but I feel there's really something special when we can also have deep critical thinking and analysis about the games and the industry itself Cheers all and LSM: KEEP IT UP!

Kelzilla

Great episode! I really appreciate deeper topic discussions like this!

Kenneth Fox

As a journalist here in Ireland I’m sad to see how trust for the media in the US has declined so much. I understand the reasons why but so much great work is still going on in the field.

Largent Brewer

Great episode gentlemen. That reddit post you talked about on this podcast is the exact reason I left the KF community in 2020. Even though I didn't vote in 2020, I felt very ostracized and unwelcome by them and their community. Of course there are some very loving and kind people apart of the best friends, but there are a large vocal section that act as culture warriors who continue to push good people away. It turns out I am grateful to be out of that community, but it's just a sad thing to know its an ongoing issue. Colin, I truly appreciate your stance for this company. I feel welcome and comfortable. Although none of us share exact views on anything, we all seem to bond on what makes us human, what makes us laugh and of course our love of video games and this industry. Thanks again for a great episode. <3

GunMetalJackal

Colin mentioning his Ron Paul sign at IGN reminded me that someone did actually have a problem with it who was there at the time. I used to be a huge fan of the Rebel FM podcast and one the hosts, Arthur Gies, I clearly remember mentioning some one having a Ron Paul sign at the office and proceeded to say not very nice things about it. This was around when Trump first ran for office and like many, it must have broken Arthur's brain to were the constant political talk and the other side is evil ramblings ran me off the show. It was a shame since I really did love the podcast and had been there since episode 1 when 1up.com folded.

Schwabby

This was an incredible episode. Please do more of this. You guys have a great perspective.

Guybrush Threepwood

Loved this episode thanks guys. Left-leaning listener here. Colin and some others are conservatives I am always interested in listening to.
