Barriers continue to erode in our industry, with the surprising news that one-time PlayStation exclusive Death Stranding would be migrating to Xbox platforms on the fifth anniversary (to the day) of its launch on PS4. Taken along with Sony publishing games like Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade that it never owned outright to begin with -- a truly marked change from prior behavior -- what does the brand's increasing flexibility mean for its traditionally robust and powerful exclusives catalog? Is openness a vital component of keeping the games flowing in the modern era? And with yet another Xbox game seemingly en route to PS5 in the form of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, how are things moving in the other direction? Other news this week includes fresh word of a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, confirmation of Grand Theft Auto VI's release season, Take Two's sale of AA label Private Division, and more. Listener inquiries help us round things out, per usual. How do we define "the modern audience?" Is gaming an important component of our respective relationships? Has replayability taken a nosedive this generation? How did the interaction between a listener's mother and Colin go when she encountered him walking his dogs?

Chris was spot on in terms of the defining characteristic of modern audiences being low attention span “second screen” viewers. The basic, shit-tier writing in Dragon Age is a great example, irrespective of the subject matter. The YA level, exposition-first dialogue is barely worth engaging with if you can actually absorb metaphors and allegory. And the reviewers giving an RPG with writing like this 9s and 10s? Our cultural tastemakers are explicitly saying that this is the best we should expect from the genre. It’s fucking dire.

Dustin ive noticed a lot of popular games on steam get cheap knock offs on the playstation store and I really do agree playstation needs to get a handle on getting these taken off

Cory Knudsen

Kinda Funny has been heading that way for years and it's the reason I bowed out a long time ago.

Seth

Why does it feel like good and smart people on the left, (Ex. Chris/Greg Miller) are building up so much vitriolic hate for their fellow man? I had to stop listening to KOF altogether because it just got so nasty and the same is happening with Chris on the Snark Tank.

Jacob Lesperance

As a foreigner watching your election... You had a choice between a shit sandwich and a shit salad. Congrats on eating shit no matter the result, lol.

Mitch Orobko

Dustin- Okay we gotta wrap this episode up Colin- You guys ever sniff these markers growing up?? Had me dying lmao 🤣

Chris Fazio

If Greg’s “best friends” disappointed him, perhaps he now knows how Colin felt.

Big Fudge

Whoever made that comment to Dustin should be banned from ever rejoining.

Jason H

Bengals Ravens was a great game, I too held off playing the Pro and was not disappointed

Riley Donovan

Is there a way to perhaps turn this comment section off

Caleb Peacock

Colin that November 8th connection was shrewd, man. I’m glad I’m subbed for insights like this. Nice catch

Jamie Hexum

Just wanted to say how bummed and disappointed I am that Ben’s been laid off. We all love ya, man.

Hunter Flaherty

the comment directed toward dustin was the most horrible thing ive heard this whole election cycle. Unbelievable…. Also… chris is an absolute deranged moron, but its his right to be that. This is America, i will NEVER agree with that guy on a single issue outside of games, and thats okay

Yeah, regarding Greg basically telling Trump voters to leave KF in 2020, it just doesn’t make sense to me. If you’re serious about changing hearts and minds, you’re never going to accomplish that by scolding and preaching. Keep people around, foster a positive environment, let people develop through osmosis. Don’t immediately shun entire swaths of people, but address specific issues if they ever come up. Way too much tribalism out there. I’m about as left wing as they come, but I have no problem vibing with the content and people here. I wouldn’t want to seal myself into an echo chamber and only hear opinions I agree with. That’s not living in the real world.

Murderer Kevin

Shout-out doctor who missing episodes ❤️

I always say the easiest way to notice 30 vs 60 is to show 1 of the Spider-Man games. Switch between and notice the window reflections on resolution mode vs your running speed on performance mode.

Joseph Gedgaudas

My question is why would I want to be able to notice the difference in framerates if it's going to make me as unhinged as they are when they discuss it?

Ben Bell

Listening to Colin complaining about working at 7am as someone who starts work at 5am was so funny

Adam Barnes

I’m 80 minutes into this episode and I’ve barely heard Dustin, and I’ve also learned that Ben was let go from LSM. Hey Dustin… ever considered doing a podcast with Ben? I reckon it could work. LSM has changed for the worse so I’d be down for a new place to go. Have a think.

NecrumOddBoy

I don’t know what the hell is going on with all this nonsense but daylight savings time is strictly for farmers so they maximize the visibility for crop harvest and management. It’s fairly simple and understandably annoying for everyone else but that’s what it is.

Matt Llewellyn

I watched Colin and Greg all the way back to the Beyond days. Colin seems relatively the same in his content but over the last few years, Greg has looked absolutely miserable at times. One of my biggest issues with early Greg was how boisterous and over the top he was. Now, especially in KOF content, he just looks tired and over it much of the time. His energy seems more performative. Really, the only time I see Old Greg (lol) is when he’s doing WWE events.

I too have a wisdom teeth/new game memory. October 15, 2007. Went into Walmart, mouth full of gauze and blood, and bought Eternal Sonata for Xbox 360. Absolutely adore that game. Also, I had 5 wisdom teeth removed and the bill was $1134. Extra wisdom teeth runs in the family. My mom had a full second set come in in like her late 40s.

Re: the final write in, I had to get a routine surgery done in 2018 to repair a sports hernia - which just so happened to line up within a couple days of the Red Dead 2 release. So had my feet up for 2 weeks with nothing to do but play that game, was an awesome time.

Ryan

I know a lot of the worst people are obsessed with the term, but it’s totally disingenuous to say you don’t know what ‘modern audience’ is referring to lol

Evan Westendorf

I don't quite understand the consternation around Kinda Funny endorsing Kamala. Literally everyone on that show is Leftist, and are not shy about being so on social media and pretty much everywhere. You'd have to be pretty unfamiliar with the product to not understand their stances well before their endorsement took place. If everyone at the company shares the same opinion passionately enough that they all want to put their name behind an endorsement like that, that's their choice, and it seems fairly reasonable imo.

Dante B

I regularly disagree with Chris, and I read the comments here before finishing the episode and assumed he went off on some insane rant. What is everyone here so hostile about? He didn’t say anything even remotely unreasonable. Unless you just think your guy is completely exempt from any sort of criticism, whatsoever. If anything, this comment section only bolsters his point. A lot of you need to chill out. A bad look.

Daddy T

Yanks care way way too much about politics is what I’m taking from this comments section

Hozi

To the under appreciated son, don't let that comment get to you about your lost child. We here for you.

Diddy’s Dong Quest

All good man! Sometimes all the anger and negativity online is contagious. Sucks there’s so much of it! I appreciate the kind words.

Evan Westendorf

I think a game like Metaphor doesn't get flak for being "woke", even though it contains leftist viewpoints, because it's a Japanese game. What "woke" means to a fuck ton of outraged people is "women" or "people of color" or "LGBTQ". They think TLOU2 is "woke" for no reason other than LGBTQ characters star in it, not for the politics. But an anime fantasy game doesn't read as "woke" to them because the characters read as "white" and the women are all drawn very flatteringly, and there aren't a lot of LGBTQ in their games. The anti-woke crowd simply cares about a bunch of buzz topics that they barely understand because someone told them to be mad at them, and they're racist, homophobic, and sexist. Chris has said this before, but there are so many things from the past that people would label as "woke" today, but they love them anyway, because nobody was tearing these things apart from such a stupid, shallow, outraged lens and telling them to get mad about it when they first saw it. Today, every new product has some outrage grifter waiting to tell you why you should hate something without experiencing it for yourself and drawing your own conclusions.

My wafflehouse hashbrowns

Hearing about the kinds things people say on exit polls is absolutely wild ! I listen to this podcasts and others for some games stuff and quips nothing anyone has ever said here has effected my actual life . It’s a podcast

Greg McDonald

I agree with 99% of what Colin said regarding Greg & Kinda Funny but I guess you could say their podcast about Kamala was opt-in too, the same way a political episode of Stelly would be

Scott Yodoff

Colin Goes on 20 minute rant about not telling you who to vote for and why you shouldn’t Chris immediately goes Trump is an asshole in the 20 seconds he has in the segment . Chris with a straight face then implores everyone to turn the temperature down . Can’t make this shit up . It works for Trump . It worked in 2016 . It didn’t work in 2020 . It hasn’t worked for anyone else except for Trump . It’s not that it works now in perpetuity , it worked in a very specific set of circumstances for a very specific person . What a reductive thought . Everyone will be an asshole from now on because I think the President is . Jesus Christ

Jacob Lesperance

Alan Wake 2 launched exclusively on Epic. Huge mistake. No Physical release at lunch, huge mistake. Control is one of my favorite games of all time and I didn't by Alan Wake 2 till the Physical was announced. Physical is still 30 to 40% of triple A sales. Dumb move.

Joseph Cerini

Metaphor is not a political game. The game does not invest in trying to make you (the player) believe in a political ideology corresponding to our current world politics. You can say the game has governmental themes/ political undertones but that's not its focus. The racism and one savior narratives in the game are cultural ideas that go back thousand of years and are the true focus. Now Dragon Age: the Veilguard is however a political game because like Chris said, it actively has our world identical policies in a game world that should not have them. It is forced on the player and the game doesn't give you away to avoid the situation in its dialogue options. All that to say, cut the bs, politics left leaning, right leaning bs is not in fucking everything.

NecrumOddBoy

Just for those who are curious about Harry Potter extended content, the cursed child play is an amazing two part story that I highly recommend to any Harry Potter fan. The only thing that threw me off in it was that they made Hermione and her daughter black, which doesn’t make any sense and doesn’t have any other explanation other than they were looking to throw a little diversity in there. Other than that, the story is incredible and it would make an amazing film. I do agree that the fantastic beast series is ass.

Britt Bradley

Is Colin going to do a commentary podcast about the way the election played out? I always love hearing his take. I may be missing it somewhere

Bartevious

Excited to see if this “opt in” strategy with political talks will actually come to fruition. May be able to listen to Jaffe talk about “games” if that’s the case 🤣

Fotis Lyto

That person that left the comment to Dustin, what a horrible human. It's crazy that the person that wrote that thinks he is a good person for voting a certain way and only people with empathy vote like that, while he is such a vile piece of shit.

Bartevious

Chris getting emotional about how mean Trump is was a moment I was not expecting myself to hear today 🤣🤣🤣

Scorpio

A Playstation podcast, that gets a new Playstation console while the show is recording, and not a fuck is given about showing and commenting on it. Am I in the wrong here?

Buster Crabcakes

It's so funny that after Colin and Dustin talk about keeping Sacred Symbols and Last Stand politically neutral for like 20 minutes Chris says something so nakedly partisan right off the bat But like Colin said it's his choice to make

Bailey Callis

Just so Chris knows, Obnoxious essentially just means annoying. I thought he was a pro at using big boy words 😂

MollyMog

“Who are you convincing?” Exactly.

Marco Maluf

Greg was always a asshole, he just decided to make himself transparent about it, I was fooled by him back then, after what he did to Colin, became clear.
