Kadokawacquisition? | Sacred Symbols, Episode 334

The industry was recently set alight by a pair of articles from newswire Reuters indicating that Sony is interested in buying Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa Corporation, and indeed, Kadokawa itself has since confirmed the reporting. Such a move has massive implications for Sony's increasing dominance in the anime and manga spaces, and it's likely this attempt at M&A is squarely focused on that first and foremost. But acquiring Kadokawa could be a huge boon for the PlayStation brand, too, considering it owns the likes of Spike Chunsoft and Acquire, and perhaps most importantly a controlling share in FromSoftware, too, the prolific studio behind Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Armored Core, Sekiro, King's Field, and more. Should Sony nab Kadokawa, does that mean FromSoft would join PlayStation Studios as a proper first party team? Could further emphasizing Sony's Japanese identity provide a valuable path forward for PlayStation? Other news this week includes fresh PlayStation 6-related rumors, word out of Square Enix concerning Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part III and a potential 2D-HD version of Final Fantasy VI, PlayStation Portal's awesome upgrade to allow cloud gaming without PS5, and more. Per usual, we wrap things up with inquiries from our beloved audience. What are our thoughts on this year's iteration of Geoff Keighley's Game Awards? Which difficulty settings are most appealing to us in the titles we play? How does Colin deal with any negative feedback surrounding the games he writes? In one listener's quest to invite another to be his Best Man, could it be that their shared romance is the real story? Follow the hosts! The episode get taken down?

Electric Soup

Thank you for letting that man know to mind his business. I've been bartending for about 6yrs now and it amazes me how many people don't know bar etiquette, especially the 30 and under crowd. Being almost 40 maybe it's just second nature to us, but it's wild to hear a bartender asking something like this. We're the people that answer phones and tell wives their husband isn't there while he's betting keno pounding MGD right in front of us. Unwritten rules need to be on posters these days.

Yeah the guitar clip got bugged in the original render and I wanted to fix it asap. Should be all clear!

George Hall

I love David Jaffe, fuck the haters

Issac Woosley

Everyone at LSM is awesome my favorites are Colin and Jaffe tho

Matthew Cooper

Absolutely, the idea that a bartender would inject himself into the personal lives of customers like that is crazy to me. You're not the morality police, this is not your place at all. I've known a couple of my friends cheated before and I've never said anything. Cheating isn't a good thing, but neither is gossiping or getting into other people's business.

Christopher Cottle

It’s definitely bugged bass (guitar) cause of heavy metal man 🤦🏿‍♂️

The LSM Awards need a "Best Podcast Game" category.

Garrett Shelton

Just now learning Colin makes games and bought all 4 on my ps5 immediately because PSA they’re on sale.

Eric Smith the Bartender (& not the Sony Employee)

Hey- I'm the one that wrote in! I think you and I work at two different types of bar scenes ahaha. Mine is much more casual, and we see the same people weekly (sometimes a couple of nights a week). For what it's worth, I'm taking the gang's advice, but it does feel morally wrong. I've asked a few friends & family members, and they all feel like the wife deserves to know. Sentiment online is the opposite & tends to be in agreement with yours, hence why I wrote in asking for advice. No need to throw shade

drumlord

Excited for the episode with Craig! Colin, your assessment of gaming news is more thorough and nuanced than any other gaming content creator I’ve seen. Everyone else attributes the $400M Concord number to Sony, while you take the time to breakdown when they acquired Firewalk and how that number was split between companies. Same thing with the Kadokawa acquisition. Everyone is talking about FromSoftware, but I haven’t seen anyone mention the significance of the anime/manga arm of the company. Sorry for the long post. I’m not trying to kiss your ass or anything; I just want to say I appreciate your nuanced reporting and balanced take on a lot of these news items. Best in the business imo.

Fireside chat's was dope. I had the same problems with certain people not really being comfortable on the mic in college. I think years of podcasts and audio books can sometimes be great preparation for those types of long form interviews. I now understand that most people aren't able to just... Go and have it flow smoothly

Born-Blind

I was unaware Jaffe was getting a ton of hate. That's such a bummer. I don't agree with him on a whole number of things but the guy is the epitome of chaotic neutral. Love that dude.

nicholas

Hire David Jaffe lol. You might disagree with the guy but he's very open minded and reasonable in a way that not many are today. And that's coming from someone who disagrees with his politics almost wholeheartedly. Also bring back fireside chats. We can dream.

Flint Dibble and the Dibble singers

I have a solution to the game awards. Introducing Geoff Keighley's Annual Game Celebration. A night of new announcements and celebration of this years releases. The voters pick 20 games they liked during the year in no order. Give the devs of the top 20 picks a 2 minute video to talk about their games. No arbitrary awards just acknowledgement. Its perfect!

Avery

Spike Chunsoft also just dropped Sparking Zero. I would hate to see such a talented Dev team be locked down to one platform.

Guybrush Threepwood

Comical at this point - STILL WAITING for ANYONE I even vaguely pay attention to that thinks it was a good idea for DLC to take up a slot in the GOTY category. Just proves the massive disconnect between these people (who made this decision) and actual gamers.

Germanos

[Old guys talking about Horizon Adventures] KIDS! it's a kids game! How is this so hard to understand? I've got a seven and five year old, and they over the moon with Horizon Adventures. It's a triple-A quality kids game. Go and check out the Paw Patrol games in PS+ Extra to check the difference between HA and what normally companies create for kids. Also the guy who asked about the target audience, presented four options, and none were kids - hilarious 😆.

Jason

Jaffe literally thinks his kid is a different gender. This is mentally retarded and I'm fucking done being gaslit about it being "normal" and "brave". Do not hire Jaffe. Get his kid into safer more responsible hands.

Born-Blind

I find him entertaining, perceptive and open to discourse on a range of topics I disagree with him on. "Piece of shit" never really came to mind. Thanks for sharing such a bold and fastidious take with the audience!
