A Kind of Cathedral Business | Sacred Symbols, Episode 336

News is admittedly slow as the industry awaits major announcements at the imminent Game Awards. But a specific interview was recently released that still gives us plenty to discuss. The website Eurogamer sat down with ex-PlayStation executive Shawn Layden for a fascinating chat about the present and future of the console space, and he had tons to say. We spend a lot of time dissecting his thoughts on topics ranging from PlayStation 6 and console agnosticism to Sony publishing on Xbox and perhaps the most important issues of all: The cost to develop increasingly long and expensive games that few people even bother to beat. Other news this week includes the shuttering of Ubisoft's beleaguered shooter XDefiant, the announcement of a blatant ripoff of Guerrilla's Horizon series called Light of Motiram, FromSoft's puzzling claim that it's not working on an Elden Ring sequel, and more. Listener inquiries help us round things out, per usual. Is Sony quietly giving PSVR2 a new push? How can Square Enix still be publishing PS1 games? Will Sony's E3 2013 'game sharing video' truly resonate throughout time? When will the audience learn that -- yes, indeed! -- you should definitely listen to our rock-solid relationship advice? Legacy media asks corporate executives softball questions for a fluff piece? Shocking.

Colin always be singing in falsetto doing his best Michael Jackson, but when he sings Sega Genesis era "Saay-gaa" it works so goddamn well. (1:18:44)

A better mic will go a long way. I peeped, but the audio quality being subpar was not engaging enough. Especially when compared to the game's audio. Hope you can get this sorted eventually!

I think the "game sharing" video combined with the price announcement at that E3 show was the moment Sony slit Xbox's throat. This might explain why Sony doesn't do those kind of things anymore and markets things at their own slow ass pace. They assume they have won.

not sure if I should even say much of anything, but when you guys got to the whole relationship situation, I’ve been in quite a few relationships and I’ve had certain issues with some folks from being physically harmed by drunken antics/being hit in the back of the head a few times here or there.. but yeah, with the most recent relationship, it was my longest relationship going on almost 5 years since we started hanging around with each other during Covid, lines were crossed, and we basically fell into a relationship while I didn’t put a label on it, she did.. me finding out about a year or two in and she introduced me to her boss as her boyfriend which is on me for not full on thinking we were steady.. though with the recent political climate, she’s a heavy left, leaning individual, was a door knocker for Bernie.. while I tend to be more of a libertarian/independent with right leaning sensibilities.. finding myself trying to calm her down and telling her to basically wait it out to see if anything she is apparently trembling in fear over is possibly not a thing to be that concerned about... then being told that I do not have the right to tell her how to feel in which I wrote like three paragraphs but before she could read it retracted everything since this was through messenger and probably should’ve been a phone call, but it exploded pretty quickly and she just stopped and telling me that I was hurting her for what she believed to be some kind of moral compass definition.. basically not even asking me who I voted for even though I did vote the opposite of her and point blank, stating why to the point that she almost didn’t vote blue.. just assuming immediately that I voted the way I did even though I probably would’ve put a spin on it and just say something else to not have to deal with it as I’ve voted for Gary Johnson and the last female libertarian even though I didn’t completely agree with her stances on a lot of things, but seemed like the best choice at the tim.. yeah basically saying that she had hurt me physically a few times just because she occasionally with Lou’s that emotionally and act like a doting mother trying to keep me in line by squeezing my hand way too hard suddenly.. never telling her that there were so many times where I practically almost walked out of the house that she had squeezed so randomly hard and is basically biting the bullet and not wanting to turn it into a bigger issue at the time.. brought it up this time. To which she pretty much put it down as well she said she was straight, done. Just the word done and hasn’t talked to me since.. I have sent her messages to which she has not responded and has not even looked at them.. as I said, we’ve been dating for almost 5 years, she was there for me when I had to check into the hospital with Covid because it turned into pneumonia and people giving me crap for wanting to take early morning walks to at least get out, basically making it worse, but yeah, G helped me with getting fruit and other things that I couldn’t take care of for my isolation issues.. before DoorDash became an idea in the money department.. chest Ramm now but yeah, not sure how to go about the whole thing even though I’ve had a lot of folks tell me too just go with it and leave her alone or a few people that knew us mutually since we worked in the same area just different jobs/companies.. luckily not in the same situation anymore, but her living about a half hour north of me in NH.. jess kind of puts me at a weird spot since I used to basically live in the same town as all my other exes and we could at least talk or be friends and in this situation it looks like completely burn that bridge. Not sure if she’s going to calm down if things get better or if she’s just going to go down the blueanon tunnel some more since she keeps posting some random crazy lefty stuff which no one has actual evidence for, but it just gets more convoluted as we still have each other on Facebook and share multiple accounts for streaming.. mostly mine while also sharing a BJ’s account, mine.. that was kind of the therapeutic putting out there, but yeah, not sure if you guys have heard of anyone in one of the situations where the politics somehow divided people you know or heard of..? Long I know, sorry.

They may also not want to give Xbox or anyone else a similar opportunity. So rather than maybe putting their foot in their mouth for a competitor to capitalize on, they say very little.

Collin, you can do multiple redemptions in PS Stars. You just have to back out of the menu completely and select the $X again. It's tedious but you don't have to wait hours or even minutes. Chris get a Globular Cluster for the VR2, it's a game changer. Helps quite a bit with the weird day drinking-esqe headaches. I tended to get that way too but now I can play Pistol Whip for a couple hours without issue.

Deyton Dykes is absolutely his real name ahahahahaha. He’s my best friend in the world and I miss him like fucking hell and it was fucking crazy to hear his name on this show. We were both really really huge fans of you and Greg in high school and sorta fancied ourselves to be sorta similar to yall. I’m the angsty one, and he’s every bit as fucking cool as his name sounds, so yall can do the math on who was who. I miss you, man. I’m sorry I can’t really find the words.

Great points on AI pseudo art in games, Colin. I am open to AI in other parts of my life and I use it for internet search and such, but art is a human endeavor. Or rather, art as a creative flow is divine. An X user once commented the following on AI imagery: ”AI art is good for humour, in its insane mashups, but overall it feels evil. There is a feeling like sickness or cosmic revulsion from staring too long at its totally inhuman creations.“ This hit the nail on the head for me, during my months of experiementing with various apps. Art, this is not.

There's like a deep unspoken tension throughout the entire intro between Dustin and Colin post-Kenya remark and it's absolutely hilarious

Colin taking his Curtis Yarvin obsession into the naming of the episode titles. Colin if you like Yarvin you should also read Nick Land. Passage Press put all his writings from Xenosystems together in a book format recently that includes QR codes to a bunch of archived hyperlinks referenced by him in the original writings. Yarvin gets brought up a lot.

The Shawn Layden conversation was really interesting. I wonder if instead of thinking about game size in the context of length, devs are limited by the idea of a linear story and are working within a traditional framework. I don’t know the cost to develop AAA games like returnal or deathloop but I’d imagine it was relatively cheap compared to some games. I agree many games overstay their welcome and don’t need to be so long, but maybe devs can consider other ways of structuring their games. Idk the cost of Judas for instance, but it seems to have a different kind of structure to how it’s built and how the game story progresses. Idk. Just interesting to think about.

Germanos

God, I was so frustrated about the conversation on the Shawn Layden interview, but the guys finally at the end touched the money topic....but for a couple of seconds, what is just disappointing. This is the essential part of the conversation. It is not a problem to create 5, 10, 15 hour Triple-A games. The problem is selling them for 70$. And btw. it should not.

Guybrush Threepwood

WE NEED a Jaffe PLUS where he can come on and also explain all the drama

Top-tier cathedral analogy by Shawn Layden. I didn't really gravitate towards him as a personality at Playstation when he was in charge, but I admittedly miss him now that he's gone. I think Playstation could really benefit from his style of leadership right about now.

I actually have the PSX startup sound and video play when I start up my car. Thanks to having HondaHack installed on my little turbo Civic Si you can sort of take over the radio and do whatever you want. Makes me happy every time I start that thing up

"get this slop out of here" is a great take on ai film

I'm finally playing through Alan Wake 2 and I'm shocked at how high quality this game is. The callbacks to Control and Alan Wake are masterfully done as well. I really love what they're doing!
