The same day this podcast publishes, Geoff Keighley will hold his annual Game Awards show in LA, and naturally, we'll all tune in to see who wins (or -- much more importantly -- what's announced). But the reality is this: The Game Awards as it's currently constructed is an ad-bloated mess that focuses less on what's great than on what's next. And its results are entirely dictated by an insular group of rapidly waning media-types that don't seem to even like the industry, nor people who play games, period. Should something be done about it? One person thinks so. His name is "Stuttering" Craig Skistimas, industry entrepreneur, founder of pioneering media brand Screw Attack, and the host of the popular Side Scrollers YouTube channel. I (Colin) invited him onto Sacred+ to discuss his notion of a Game Awards replacement he's aptly named The Real Game Awards. Now, to be clear, he and I don't quite agree on his approach -- I think it's best to decentralize the industry and therefore delegitimize its power structures, while he thinks they should be taken on directly -- but this is why I wanted to facilitate this conversation to begin with. It's cool when people try new things, and maybe we can better understand each other's positions by merely chatting for a bit. Please enjoy.

Colin didn’t push back at all in this interview. Don’t think we should be taking Craig serious with categories like “best jiggle physics”.

Addiholic

Really not a fan of Craig personally. I was gonna try to give this a chance but after seeing therealgameawards and some of those catagories definitely steering clear of this one. I respect Colin's right to have who he wants on his show, just mean they're not all gonna be for me and that's okay. It's a shame though. Would have loved to hear about this from anyone else since I think TGAs are a big problem.

Jamie Hexum

If you’re not doing acceptance speeches and letting them have their moment, it doesn’t feel like you’re celebrating the game. And if you’re not properly celebrating it, it feels less that you’re doing it for gamers, and more doing it just to be contrary to the VGA’s because you don’t like their agenda. Does Craig make a lot of great points about TGAs? Sure. Does his idea of what the awards should be also seem equally greasy? Yep. Why don’t you get The Quartering to host? Lmao

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

All you people whining in the comments didn't even listen to the podcast. This was more of a discussion on the disconnect between journalists/developers and gamers. And the shitty politics behind The Game Awards. If you people don't agree with these sentiments then why the hell are you on Last Stand media? This is the same stuff Colin has been saying for years.

Gooch Gobbler

I have nothing to add other than I hate this guy's whole vibe, before taking anything about his views into account. Quit staring into my soul with those icy blues white walker!

Dante B

The Real Game Awards is corny as fuck to be sure, but I’m shocked at the amount of hate in this comment section. I feel like I’m on another planet. He was perfectly cordial, well spoken, not out here saying something deliberately inflammatory. Just a reasonable, measured discussion. Of all the episodes to get this much ire from the community, I can’t believe it’s this one.

Breno Bezerra Bluhm

Easily one of the worst episodes ever lmao. Listening to this episode I just could think: “my goat is washed” it’s hard to believe the Colin from the past would go this soft on an interview with a dude that perfectly encapsulates his definition of “wrong voices” in the cultural wars.

Big Fudge

All the pussies in these comments are fucking wild. Jaffe can come on here spewing his bullshit grifting low information talking points but nobody else can.

kunsam

The tolerant left in all their glory in the comments. Good episode, and nice to see Craig on the show.

DarthLemon616

I have zero idea who this guy was. I just didn't vibe what he was bringing to the table. So I couldn't listen to the rest, also y'all really don't like him 😅😅

Faan

It rubs me the wrong way that Colin has Craig on after the crap he says about Jaffe, including that he's a bad father. Colin went all for defending Matty (as he should) for the sh*t he got after his Dragon Age review and defended him against Grummz. Meanwhile, Colin won't defend Jaffe to Craig. LMAO, for someone who is still consistently reminding us that he got excommunicated from the games industry (of his own volition, mind you), it's ironic to see you not defend Jaffe. But whatever, Colin, you hate your audience and paying Patreon members unless they brown-nose you.

Aaron Merrick

The website for the real game awards is a joke. He is asking for money and promising nothing. If “the real game awards” is anything more than Craig sitting in front of his webcam and saying “the award goes to…”, if it even ever materialises, I’ll be shocked. What do you really think he is going to spend the money on? This is so obviously a grift.

Morgan

What's super funny about this "Real Game Awards" is that this years VGAs are the the best ever lol. Seriously this show is a tight one this year.

Lord Zedd

It’s amazing that people who pay for Colin’s content don’t understand anything about him or LSM. I don’t watch anything with Jaffe because I don’t want to hear him act like a 12 year old and spurge out 90% of the time. I also don’t comment on how Colin should never platform Jaffe again. It’s not my place to police his company. If I was truly that upset I would simply stop giving him my money.

ToiletDrummer

surprised at the butthurt comments. Appreciate not shying away from getting "controversial" folks on the podcast.

Cole Barker

These comments suck all around. What happened to the LSM community.

Your Boi Nicky V

Awesome chat, I'm gonna check out Craig's content

JT

It is possible to disagree with people without being an asshole in the comment section. That being said smart money would be that the Real Game Awards never take place. Also I find the anti-game journalism movement just as annoying as game journalism so I will continue to ignore them both.

Orb Ponderer

This goes in the bucket of worst episodes man, right next to the one with Melanie Mac. These people like her and Craig are genuinely unintelligent, uneducated people in this industry, perpetuating a culture war that does not and can not end to extract cash from dimwits and morons, which is exactly the point of therealgameawards. Colin you spoke a lot about how the dipshits calling tales of Kenzara woke simply aren’t aware of the game or the meaning of that word and Craig is exactly one of these people. Perpetually negative content and outrage bait/farming in the pursuit of more money from people with a chip on their shoulder and a place to direct their anger. And to these same morons crying about the “tolerant left” because the comments are negative, people disliking your favorite grifter who barely plays games isn’t being intolerant of a different voice it’s being intolerant of a bad faith actor which is exactly who and what Craig is.

Aric Anderson

I remember meeting Craig in person at guardian con a few years back. He was nice enough. I feel like he just doesn’t have enough “real news” to cover a daily 2 hour show so he pulls bottom barrel news pieces. Probably why he covered Jaffe so much. Idk the episode was fine at best. I wouldn’t listen to another one of these if he came back. People who obsess over others being trans or how people define their lives are weird. It rarely adds anything of note to conversation about games.

Frank G.

Money🤑🦀💵💵💵 I want a bigger piece of the culture pie...and 🤑💵💵💵

Zack E

Kinda felt like this conversation was just going in circles.

AngelOfCake

Best non jaffee comment section. 9 cats out of five buffalos. I hope Craig does well and if it works out, will more people replicate it? Always good to see more ideas.

Luke Knockton

Colin, can't believe you had this fucking clown on.

MarkGrouch

I don’t know how you can rightfully criticize Grummz and his ilk while bringing this grifting clown on.

Caleb Jurgens

The game awards need to be about the players and not the devs? What kind of self important drivel is this? It shows a lot of people just want to be coddled.

Pretty Much Satan

Some of these comments are absolutely bonkers banana pancakes; I get not “liking” or “enjoying” a guest or their perspective; hell, I even get feeling the need to respectfully make your voice heard if you feel like it’s an entitlement due to your patronage- but this is some LSM Reddit level nonsense.

AJWhite

I listened to this, listened to about 15 minutes of side scrollers live coverage of the game awards, and came back to write that their panel was the biggest group of retards I've ever seen

DeadMail

I’ve never listened to Craig’s content before but going solely by these comments you’d think he’d punched everyone’s grandma! I have no intention of listening to his Real Game Award. I didn’t even watch the regular Game Awards show. Just not my cup of tea. Didn’t agree some of the ideas presented but so what? Everyone’s got different views. That’s what makes the world special.

Neil Davis

The only episode of SS+ I’ve actively disliked. Craig is a loser who’s just trying to take people for a ride and you didn’t push back on him almost at all. He’s the exact kind of person you constantly say is a bad faith actor in this space and the people he surrounds himself with have said some real fucking vile shit. Idk man. This is a bummer. They’re the exact kind of rage bait bullshit that needs cut off at the knees. And this is nothing to do with politics. I tend to be center left, but being decent and not calling people slurs shouldn’t really fall into a political bent. Doesn’t cost shit to just not act like an asshole.

Addison Crews

Great conversation. OG Screwattack is the goat. More Craig on LSM!

Gerard Quinn

Oh cool so from the comments seems like the lesson Colin will take away from this is… absolutely nothing lol

ByWatterson

This dropped before an absolute banger of a show. Like milk.

Danio

After this I tried listening to Side Scrollers podcast but apart from the main host all the people he surrounds himself with are so insufferable... Plus almost all they talk about is this culture war bs. It's like Asmongold podcast without Asmongold. Nothing of worth there. I'm not interested in their version of the game awards.

Ryan Dillon

Less of this culture war grifter please

Germanos

First of all, I agree with the sentiment that this person is one of the people we absolutely don't want in the space, and is a bad emissary for video games. He, his crew, Vera Dark and other asmon-likes. On the other hand, I am not surprised Colin decided to talk to him, as me being here, with LSM, for a long, long while, I know that Colin is willing to talk to anyone and give a chance of discussion to anyone. Even if that chance is a rope in the end. And I would like for him to continue to do just that.

AnthonyLedesmaGames

10 minutes in, there's some corporate or business tinge to the way Craig speaks, it hasn't felt like a genuine conversation

MR. MOHAM

I was disappointed to witness absolutely ZERO pushback from Colin. I have no problem using the sunlight of Sacred Symbols+ to expose what is obviously a blatant grifter. However, if you're going to sit in silence as he spews his nonsense this isn't an intelligent conversation - it's a commercial for his swindle. If I wanted vapid discourse that only exists to facilitate self-promotion I'd go listen to Tim Gettys. We can do so much better here.

drewmoneybeatz

I thought this was a great conversation.

Rat Pobertson

Isn't his show the one where they sit around and take turns jerking Mark Kern off?

Michal Dudic

I never watched any Side Scrollers, I remember Craig from the GameTrailers-era ScrewAttack and I always liked their stuff. After this conversation, I went to check out Side Scrollers only to find some of the most insufferable bottom-of-the-barrel culture war shit I've ever seen. The guy should have been fucking grilled on the show. He criticizes how there is a divide between devs, media, and gamers, but is himself responsible for content engineered to rile people up. It's confrontational just for the sake of it, without any attempt at a half-intelligent conversation, full of bad-faith arguments. He's a textbook grifter and that's without even getting into the awards thing.

Alex

People reacting to this episode displays how much of a hive mind the LSM audience has become. A single different opinion crosses your timeline and the majority of you go ballistic like a toddler who dropped his ice cream cone. Grow the hell up and maybe listen to someone different for a change. There are plenty of offensive things said on this network by people like Jaffe and Chris, but once someone like Craig comes along with a different perspective all of a sudden we "can't platform them". This just shows that even a community that calls itself open minded and respectful of others is really just the same as everyone else but with a facade of respectability.

David

When will this episode become available for the Sacred Symbols+ membership? The audio version is available but not the video version. Thanks

Alex Green

He called Jaffe evil for having a trans child, he’s a horrible grifter and bad actor. Love having people on like this but wish there was way more push back.

Parangariku tirimiquaro

Ah so a lot of these comments must be why the video isn't available and the reddit thread is locked. I tune into Side Scrollers every now and then. Let's go Craig!

iain mcmanus

these comments are unhinged. pure leftist prattle
