We've Painted A Picture, Now We're Drowning in Paint | Sacred Symbols, Episode 342

We had already finished this recording when surprising news broke in the world of PlayStation: Sony has cancelled two of its upcoming, unannounced games. And -- would you believe it? -- they were both live service titles, including a God of War spin-off. The really unfortunate news, however, is who was making these titles: Bend and Bluepoint, two smaller AAA teams that typically work on a single project at a time, thus wasting years of development, as well as time and resources that can never be recovered. What in the world is going on with PlayStation Studios, and how did the person who helmed the first party family during such a tumultuous period of greenlights and plug-pulling ascend to the top of PlayStation itself? It's time to start asking some really hard questions. Other news this week includes substantial rumors of more Xbox content en route to PlayStation which, if true, will make Microsoft the single most-prolific producer of content for a platform that was once its arch-rival, but no longer. Also: Reactions to the first Until Dawn film trailer, a surprising end to Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game, accolades for an exceptional-looking upcoming vampire RPG called The Blood of Dawnwalker, tantalizing news about Bungie's in-development Smash Bros.-inspired MOBA, and more. We wrap up our episode (as we always do) with listener inquiries. Now that Nintendo's Switch 2 has been revealed, what are our preliminary thoughts? Is 2025 the year we finally give PSVR2 the respect it deserves? Why is it so hard to make swimming control well? Is it just a weird a coincidence that SEGA renewed its Ecco the Dolphin trademark on September 11, 2001, or is there something deeper at play? Follow the hosts! I think when this generation is over we'll look back and see how much time and money was wasted chasing the live service trend when we could've gotten multiple quality single player titles instead. Naughty dog, Insomniac, Bluepoint and Bend should never have been making live service games now they probably won't be ready until PS6 😵

Like the live idea. Would be fun to see the show without edits. Also, vaping, if you think about it, is pretty much you giving yourself pneumonia.

I remember like a year ago when Jim Ryan announced retirement. It seemed so clear that he had made a huge mistake choosing to make the studios focus on live service games. It just seemed so obvious this was going to be a disaster. We had just finished 2 State of Play's that were not good at all. Which was unheard of. Announcements for 1st party were few and far between. It's also clear that it's going to now take time to turn all this around. PlayStation studios aren't likely to be back in form until next generation. I've had PS5 since day one like I had 4 before it. There is no comparison. This is easily the most disappointing and inconsistent gen PlayStation has ever had. Thanks Jim Ryan.

How much more time and money have to be wasted by Sony chasing the live service dragon? If you combine Naughty Dog, Firewalk, Bluepoint and Bend we are talking 15+ years WASTED. We are talking 100's of millions WASTED. Just like The Lost Generation after WW1. We are seeing a lost generation from Sony first party this generation.

Ignorant of moire myself I’m afraid. Plan to retire from podcast listening

When talking about games releasing, why do we only hear "coming to Playatation" if/when its a mutliplat game? It's been something I thought about for years, but never thinking much of it. However, "exclusives" and having to distinguish from first party, second-party, third-party, this one is signed exclusive, this one has exclusive dlc, or exclusive cinematics (Sonic), are all much more prevalent than ever. I'm fairly certain it's just for aesthetic sake and the format of the show, but I wonder if it ever gives a listener the perception of "insert game" as a playstation exclusive.

Is it wrong to demand some level of transparency from Sony? They have taken the silent approach with their consumers this generation, which is fine when it’s followed up by stellar games we want to play. Sony seems to be incompetent lately and it makes me long for the days when they would actually talk with their audience. Sounds ridiculous to demand the company reveals their projects in advance but maybe if they did they could have saved themselves millions of dollars by realizing that their core fan base couldn’t give a fiddlers fuck about the projects they are green lighting.

Andrew

Yeah.....I dunno. I'm a soyllenial too irony poisoned to disagree with my boss because I think Bernie Sanders will give me free healthcare and funkopops

What an absolute train wreck from Sony management. The competency of Hulst as head of Playstation studios and now co-CEO is in question. If you greenlighted and now are canceling all these projects, why continue with Fairgames? That seems about as guaranteed of a flop as you can get. Sony is so wildly out of touch recently that it boggles my mind as to how these people made these decisions that any gamer off of the street could tell you was a bad idea from the start. Unbelievably terrible management.

I can't stand Colin continuing to talk shit on Chrono Trigger and EarthBound for being overhyped when he overhypes the most basic ass Final Fantasy IV that is LEAGUES worse than Chrono Trigger and EarthBound in nearly all ways. FF4 ain't even as good as FF5 man! And he would have come to that realization if they got there for Knockback.

Check the Black ops 6 PS5 trophy guide to see what Halo MCC could be. Black ops 6 is DLC for MW2 (2022) and does not have a platinum. PS5 does not allow for multiple platinums per game anymore.

Guybrush Threepwood

Love Colin's super random Troy Baker story. I've been listening for 2-3 years I think and I've never heard this one.

I was hoping for a more thoughtful conversation about the canceled GaaS projects, and it unfortunately was the same as mainstream discourse. The facts are that PlayStation cannot work as they worked a decade ago. Creating single-player games, with budgets in a minimum of 200m $, within an industry filled with spikes/traps/threats for any production daring to say anything, is a risk a company does not want to take. What worked last gen, what was a winning strategy, is now a money-sink. Going full 100% business and hyperbolic: looking at how the competition is doing and how the console landscape looks, the big studios are a burden. If we want more Intergalactics, Uncharteds and Ratchets, PlayStation better nail that service game soon, or it will get really dire for PS Studios. So, I don’t think, looking down with disrespect on the efforts is such a wise move.

When it comes to games that make flying an engaging, fun and kinetic thing, please check out the Iron Man VR game for PS VR. Its age is visible, and hardware limitations hit it, BUT it is nevertheless really good.

Smoking out of an apple is classic. Gives the bud a little flavor... Messy as hell though

Cigarettes and such are bad for you. Anyone telling you that smoking weed, or vaping isn't bad for you is a liar, or an idiot. Anything you inhale that makes you cough ( the body's natural rejection method) is not good for you. Lets just admit that, and have an honest conversation. Kill yourself how you like, but just don't lie to me.

To suggest that Jim Ryan who will be 65 this year was forced out of Sony (forced out is another term for fired) and then asked to stay another 6 months… do you understand how insane that sounds? Jim Ryan retired because flying back and forth between home in England and work in the USA (8-9 hr time difference) and occasionally Japan is a lot of stress on someone especially someone who has a family. And PS6 is getting deep into development, and you want to be able to see a product to its launch. Connie Booth dealt with a lot of IP creation… she worked at Sony since 1989 and she was fired like it was nothing, and now she works for one of the biggest live service juggernauts ever… EA… hmmm

I don’t fully agree with your analysis here, but I was also disappointed with the coverage being basically the same as it is everywhere else. Sometimes that happens because the facts are so clear there isn’t anything else to say, but there was room for a more interesting discussion here IMO.

Fellow drummer here good sir. Trade that trashy china cymbal in for one of those cymbal stacks. You will not be disappointed. Also, AAMeinl makes some of the best dark dry cymbals in the business. Their sand blasted hi hats are dope and super dry. Great for the home use application.
