Please welcome legendary writer, designer, director, and executive Neil Druckmann to Sacred Symbols+. Here in the games space, Neil is already one of the best-known names in the development scene, a man who began at Naughty Dog as a programmer on the latter Jak titles, only to climb the ranks to lead the entire studio, full stop. Today, we focus our conversation primarily around his work on HBO's rendition of The Last of Us, an adaptation which he co-wrote, co-produced, and even helped direct, tasks which -- when combined with all he does at Naughty Dog itself, including writing and directing the upcoming Intergalactic for PS5 -- has forced him into a number of roles in multiple industries. How does he keep it all straight? Does he ever sleep? What are his priorities, both professionally and personally? And how does he feel about the reaction to HBO's The Last of Us, from casting to story changes and more? While we wait for Intergalactic as patiently as we can, let's instead delve into the life and times of one of the few people who has successfully crossed between gaming to film and back again.

WOW! Insane they actually got the man himself. I’m looking forward to listening to this. Also kudos to Colin for being able to keep this under wraps

Bogey

I fucking knew it

Billyb

FINALLY

Bogey

Over the past few weeks he’s mentioned a few times how he’s reconnected with Sony PR and they’re hashing shit out. I knew this was inevitably gonna happen once he said that

Zack

Sensational *Future voice*

Colin Moriarty

HELL OF A SURPRISE! LSM IS THE BEST!

Jonathan Gould

Holy shit. I actually saw this notification on my Apple Watch and said “woah” out loud while playing Doom: TDA. Immediately going to stop what I’m doing and listen.

tracefree

Dude Colin is the goat when it comes to surprises out of nowhere. Not even a tease - just: Here it is. Love this shit

Ethereal Pizza

Hayden Glass

Alex Porto

I knew it! Colin, you did it.

XR911

dude...other outlets better give our boy Colin credits when they cite this interview. Good job LSM!!!

Andrew

Let Colin cook bro

Fella

IT HAPPENED!!

Ross Stoddart

He said he had been talking to Sony PR but didn’t say much about what was going on. Dropping this and the Shu interview just randomly is such a baller move.

Greg Hadden

Finally we got the good Dr. Uckmann

Jonathan Perez

Last Stand continues to put other gaming podcasts to shame. These developer interviews are great Colin, keep up the good work.

Matt Wiles

Oh my word, Colin!! Been paying many years, listened for many years before that. I’m on holiday right now in Spain (I’m from England), pausing during a romantic meal in a beautiful Spanish courtyard to type this out as I had a notification. Well done! Haven’t even listened yet. Will do in bed tonight :)

Stick Drift

Holy shit! What a get! Crazy payoff after almost a decade!!

Jamie Hexum

I’m trying not to start crying. So happy for you, Colin. You fucking rock and you deserve this. I know he’s a bud, but I’m so glad Sony is finally playing ball. As a fan of LSM, Naughty Dog, Uncharted, and The Last of Us (probably my favorite game of all-time), I am so goddamn elated to see this notification. Today is a good day.

Joshua Jones

HOLY HELL, ITS REALLY HAPPENING YES!!!!

C

You motherfucker, I had just started Summon Sign’s episode, sorry Bradley baby, you’re getting dumped for an hour.

Dikkbig Though

The mf GOAT! So hype to hear from the man himself. Thank you Neil for all of the great games you’ve helped create. Thank you to the team working with as well. Through all of the hate I hope you know you’re appreciated by some people out here

Dan Beaman

YESSSSSS. can’t wait to watch this fucker at work tomorrow

Daniel

lol you can give them their props for the guests they get without putting down other gaming podcasts👍🏻

Seth Slykhuis

I've literally never seen Neil wear one single hat 😡

Cameron Box

Holy shit!!! Thank you, Colin ❤️

Addiholic

The absoulete fucking goat. I'm so pumped for this. 🙏🙏🙏

NecrumOddBoy

Colin… what a goat you are! Sony just cannot deny how big LSM is!!! 🏅🔥

StewDog

Congratulations Colin

DeadMail

So exciting! Can’t wait to check this out!

Card Captor Corey

I didn't realize that Druckman was a hat type of guy. I thought he was more a beanie wearing guy.

Danio

How much more TLOU talk will there be? 😭

Marcus Brown

Actually crazy, can't wait to dive in!

Joe McPartlin

Ohhh you've done it again, Colin Moriarty

Billy boob

Well done 👏🏻 Can’t wait to listen!!

Devon!

Very good conversation. Cool to see hear the comfort levels and for Neil to get to clarify a bit of the intent behind his storytelling. Looking forward to hearing more about Intergalactic!

Devon!

All.

Alec Rock

Holy shit!!! Colin you are HIM

Mike1core

Omg yeeees! Drop the mic!!

Dante B

Do not come.

MattDanger87

As soon as you were talking to Sony PR again, I just knew you were finally getting your Druckmann interview. Congrats Colin! Well deserved!

Tyrone Yhip

Got em!!! Regardless how ee feel about Neil or Last of us, this is big.

Michael Welter

Just got done listening. Great stuff Colin. Interesting to hear him say you were wrong about the Israel/Palestine allegory. I know you've thought that for a long time. He said "oh" when you said that. His butthole was puckered. Glad you asked about TLOU3. He said he meant what he said in the documentary. But then in a later interview he said its done. I think there's just no way he'll say either way until its announced. Anyway great interview.

Gino Fedele

Fantastic podcast! My only complaint is I wish it could be more than an hour.

DuckFeathers

Great get for an interview! Congrats, LSM

aspeckt112

Fuck my mouth I wasn’t expecting that.

Trevor

The notification hit my watch for this at work and I went ape shit. Time to listen!

Tis Toastie

He's only gone and done it! Great episode Colin

Josef Barker

What a huge get well done Colin 💪

Ryan Taylor

Really great interview, very insightful into the creative differences between the show and the game that he explains very well. Great work Colin! My only wish (which I’m assuming was off limits) was more information on what the last of us online was, some story or gameplay info etc, but I also understand you only have a small window to talk to the guy, gotta make the most of it.

T-rextasy

I wish these interviews allowed for the questions that everyone wants to ask. I think many of us would have appreciated an honest response to why the last of us online was cancelled even if it was a simple, “it was beyond my control” answer.

Smegaladon

Congratulations Big Col! Continually getting the biggest and best interviews in the industry

Jonathan Perez

It’s not just the recent guests they’ve had; I’m sure ign, kinda funny, etc can attract the same guests and even more. The key factor is the quality of the questions and the knowledge Colin and other members of Last Stand share when conducting these interviews. I low key agree with your sentiment though.

Deli Dept.

Well damn this wasn’t in my bingo card

Cotten

Hell yeah what a nice surprise can’t wait to listen 🔥🔥🔥

DeadMail

Awesome episode! Neil is fantastic! Loved your episode!

Miguel

Colin probably had tight pants through this whole episode!

Adam Martinez

The irony of Neil saying how the bad pacing of Lost made him lose interest by the end when that’s my exact complaint about TLOU2 lol.

Az

Amazing work Colin. You the best.

Bailey Callis

Awesome interview. It was notable however that Colin tiptoed and said he wasn't bothered by the casting of Bella despite complaining about it several times on other podcasts this season Like he has literally said "shes not working this season" yet he said to Neil "it works for me" very interesting

Stanley Stoopish

Amped we got Niel on. But holy fucking TLOU gaze over the last 45 days lolol.

Edwin Garcia

This franchise in my opinion is overrated

Joe Perez

This is an amazing interview 🫶

NeO JD

FINALLY. We back baybee

Beau!

Hell yeah!

Brendan Ryan

Damn, Colin putting up bangers

Big titty drinker

LETS FUCKING GOOOOO!!! The naughty God himself greatest game creator in history. Argue with ya mother!

Alex

Never seen Colin move that much in his chair. He really had to give everything he got for this great interview.

Philip Dunphy

Thanks for stopping by Mr. Druckmann!

James Aquilina

Happy for you Colin, I’m sure it’s been a frustrating experience covering PlayStation so closely for years and not having this type of access to PlayStation developers and executives. Your steady professionalism is finally bearing fruit. Of course you don’t need this access (as you’ve proven) but nonetheless, congrats. Keep it up!

Nicholas Renaud

This is fantastic, my heart jumped when I saw this was the new interview. Great get Colin!

william planas

It seems like Colin missed the first minute of episode 6 where is does show teenage Joel talking to teenage Tommy. Before the dad walks into the house.

mattyboy316

Colin is cooking 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Michael Ryan

Amazing stuff. Looking forward to more interviews with people working at PlayStation.

Gabriel Baker

LETS GOOOOO THEY CANT AFFORD TO FIRE YOU NEIL

Guybrush Threepwood

"Intergalactic has the deepest gameplay we've ever done." OK you have my attention!

Tim Ward

Great, another last of us episode… haha jk awesome interview Colin

Dave Barr

Great interview.

Killwin

I'm not a fan of The Last Of Us but this was a huge get, and a very interesting listen.

ROME.

What a great interview always like what Neil has to say

Heezy85

More. MORE!

Your Boi Nicky V

Clearly Neil is the one who forced Sony PR's hand. Awesome stuff.

Gareth H

I'm so glad to see this for so many reasons. Most of all I'm so pleased for you Colin and the team.

Zack E

This is great. I’m hoping Neil can come back and discuss more about the games themselves. Obviosuly the show is a relevant topic right now

John

Props to Colin for the restraint when Neil mentioned Sonic the Hedgehog

JR

Boom 💥 Banger episode. Great interview!

SweatyNReady

Dude what a pro move, talking to PlayStation PR again and leveraging these interviews. Good shit brother

Daddy T

Are you retarded? I’m not the biggest fan of part 2’s story but there’s no denying it’s very intricate systems

Ahlickaloo

Gotta censor himself for the love of Neil

Benjamin Pope

Neil's responses on the future of TLOU ip have given me hope for the game series. Next time I hope we can slide in a question about what really happened with TLOU Online (Factions 2). Or about the possibility of splitting off a multiplayer studio for NaughtyDog. Thanks for the fantastic interview Colin!

Caleb Peacock

The relationship being mended with Sony is just going to make this show so much better. Excited

Diddy’s Lube Guy

I never understood the absurd difficulty levels in Uncharted, the gunplay is so loose

Bartevious

Lost is the better paced of the two 😂

lazer_josh

Holy shit dude 🫡🔥

Girth Brooks

Great interview but does anyone else find it odd that since starting LSM Colin has consistently claimed to be “personal friends” with Neil and regularly speaking with him behind the scenes, yet in this interview, Neil mentions they haven’t talked since LSM was started. It seems like even back then Colin has only ever interacted with Neil professionally, interviewing him occasionally as part of his job. Maybe he doesn’t quite grasp the distinction between a standard business relationship and genuine friendship—or perhaps he’s overstating their connection because of the clout that association would bring. Toward the end of the interview, Colin even thanked Neil for his “friendship,” to which Neil simply responded with a polite “Thanks for having me on.” Gave me a little second hand embarrassment.

Michael B

You could be right, but I took Neil mentioning them not talking since KF, etc. as having not spoken "on the record"/professionally as Colin mentions at the start. They may have spoken behind closed doors/through messaging, etc. but nothing in the form of an interview like this, since those days. But that's just my two-cents.

Breno Bezerra Bluhm

You should have a second hand embarassment for not listening. Colin was talking about talks ON THE RECORD and Neil confirmed that it’s been a while since they last talked ON THE RECORD. Colin always said he and Neil talk constanstly privately.

Frank

Awesome interview. Great surprise :)

Statistical Barista

Thank you so much for doing this interview. This game means so much to me and it was amazing to hear both of you finally get to talk about it. Loved the insights and the conversation.

Dante's Alighieri Hogs

Come say that to me in person B I bet you'll miss ur pants and say no sir I didn't mean it sir when you witness my grotesque 7ft tall and muscled like Marcus Rühl-esque figure in person Daddy T how about My Little Bitch T

Girth Brooks

Sorry pal but I’m not. If you listened at the end Neil literally says they haven’t talked since Colin started LSM.

Jamin Fuller

I can assure you you are completely wrong about this and are not understanding it right. They talk privately. If you want to persist with a narrative in your head they don't, fine. But it is wrong.

Andile Magona

Truly great interview! Thank you Colin, Neil, Sony PR for making this happen!

Girth Brooks

That’s not what Neil said. Good D tho. I’m certain Colin appreciates you fighting non-existant E-battles for him. Free merch is in the mail. You two are personal friends now.

Daddy T

Jesus Christ I feel dead again after reading that rot, and I was just coming around, thanks bro

Big Devin Energy

“The deepest game we’ve ever done…” I’m hanging on that line because I’m not sure how you get deeper than TLoU! Great interview man congrats. 👏

Black Detective in Dexter

I don't know. I'm kind of with Jimmer on this one. Colin says "Congratulations on all your success" and then Neil says "Thanks man. Likewise, by the way, we haven't talked since you started doing Last Stand, and I really appreciate what you guys are doing". Certainly seems like they haven't spoken at all since before Last Stand started, which would be weird, considering how many times Colin has implied that they're personal friends. That being said, it's entirely possible that they do send each other a text here and there but this is the first time they've actually sat down and had a conversation since Colin started Last Stand. Either way, that ending did catch my ear when Neil said that.

Nuke

They literally say in the episode that it was approved behind the scenes through multiple people. Did you listen to it?

Daddy T

On the record, on camera, probably over a call to each other, every time Colin mentions his correspondence with Neil he says he’s Dm’d him, they’re obviously friends but they’re also obviously not talking on a fucking Zoom call every weekend. Talking about Colin appreciating fighting ‘E-battles’ for him but in all honesty it’s just very frustrating to see dickheads come in and try and downplay good work, regardless of which content creator it is. You’re on about Colin embarrassing himself when really you’re embarrassing yourself, and don’t bother coming back to me saying I’m a para social freak, I’ve said plenty of time Colin dick rides Naughty Dog into the ground, but this was cool, simple as.

Girth Brooks

Colin is a self-admitted coward. It is super awkward though when both comments are on the record on his own channel.

Girth Brooks

TLOU3 would never make its money back. Intergalactic won’t either. Hate me, but bookmark this.

Busting on an iPhone Duo and clapping it shut

Very pleased to hear that TLoU Pt. 2 wasn’t an allegory for that middle east conflict. I never even thought about that when I played it, but hearing Colin put that idea forward has stuck in my mind since, and had tainted my appreciation for it. I suppose some people see everything through a political lens.

Jason Rose

I think that’s face to face, but they likely text, email, DM often. That’s what I got from it

Busting on an iPhone Duo and clapping it shut

I agree, I just meant more that it definitely bears semblance, but I hadn’t thought of that. Colin’s not wrong to make the connection either, I just like the actual writer shutting down the one-to-one allegory. lol

Manuel Nascimento

A particular thank you for everyone involved in bringing this episode to life, including Neil’s time. He just talks so well about all these things, it’s fascinating to listen to. I hope we get more of him on Sacred Symbols as the years go by. Cheers
