Xbox Is Dominating On PlayStation - Were They Actually RIGHT? | Defining Duke, Episode 229

Much has been said about Xbox's multiplatform shift, but Xbox finally has games AND they're selling. It's truly a momentous occasion! The Dukes bend the knee as they assess a strong month for Xbox bringing four of the five best selling games to other platforms. What does this mean for the Switch 2 ports and Xbox's brand identity? Naturally, we unpack that. We also get into the thick of Bungie's latest plagiarism scandal. Just how damning are the accusations and is Marathon on the brink of cancellation? If it were to get to its release, what does it need to keep the studio alive? Indeed, things look incredibly grim for Bungie and many exit strategies are likely being planned. I can already hear the amount of cope from this episode based on the title lol.

I don’t own an Xbox (I do have the OG and 360 in my basement tbf) and don’t own a game pass sub and they were spitting this episode imo. They still hold the thought that we probably won’t see the full extent of the brand damage to Microsoft until the next console launches, so they aren’t head over heels over strong earnings

They certainly were right, despite what the hater say. Yeah, they arent selling consoles. They dont seem to care - we always say console sales are just the avenue to software sales because thats where the real money is. If Xbox can get Steam integration, have gamepass offering insane value, selling a ton of software on every platform, and PlayStations first party continues to struggle, things might honestly keep getting better for Xbox.

I've always said that Xbox is playing the long game. They are setting themselves up for the future where consoles are not a thing anymore. By playing nice with literally everyone and having no hard limits it will be hard to argue with their ecosystem. Especially if Playstation is going to stay the coarse.

Playstation GAAS initiative is struggling. Helldivers 2 which is their game sold a crap ton and just hit 200k player spike over a year later? GT7 continues to make money. Spiderman 2 still charts. Astrobot got a second wind in beginning of the year. They have issues with specific games/projects. Not everything works out, just like what happened this gen with Microsoft changing strat. But their first party this year with publishing Death stranding 2, MLB the show which prints money every yearm and Ghost of Yotei. They are fine. Again not everything works out. But its not like last year was bad for them with Astro being GOTY and helldivers 2 selling like crazy.

PS first party struggling wont really matter. We can see from their financials it's the software they are selling from 3rd party and MTX that is making them so much money. Also subs. People are really getting confused with MS and PS strategy here. MS is the one trying to sell as much software as possible to make money. PS is trying to sell as many consoles as possible to make money. PS will hurt their own software sales in order to push more consoles. Xbox will hurt their own console sales in order to push more software.

Im speaking simply about user attitudes. Many many people feel this generation has been underwhelming for Sony from a first party standpoint. Theyve taken a LOT of L's lately, both in the games they're making and the studios making them. GAAS has been a complete disaster theyre pivoting away from. This is making the drought of first party titles even worse, while Microsoft seems to finally be spooling up their studios and Gamepass to be delivering quality shit on the regular. I expect Sony will continue to be fine this gen, as many people bought a PS5 early on because MS had nothing to really offer, so theyre already captive for this gen. But next gen? I could see people making the switch if they walk away from this gen disappointed and lacking confidence in Sony, while seeing Microsoft delivering a bunch of quality titles at an insane value

Jose Mauricio

I just don't see it happening. Even Phil Spencer and Xbox have given up on that strategy. It's wild to me that people still believe that MS has some sort of hope of selling consoles. The main issue is that Sony still has their first party games. Who is going to give up Sony first party games for a good deal in games? When you can have games from both and just wait for them to go on sale?

Thanks for the title, saved me some nervous without even a sec of listen.

Damn Matty, the main character syndrome is real in this video. If I'm early I screw up the world and the Mets started losing as soon as I bought the package on TV. Here's a well known fact, the Mets will always suck. They can win a world series every now and then but will still be that team that everyone just shakes their heads to. Trust me, I'm a Jets fan. Even when they're good we are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Funny thing is I grew up in the Bronx and was a Yankees fan when they were terrible as a kid but everyone kept saying that when Steinbrenner gets back everything will be okay.
