The green team is sticking with making hardware. Consoles, handhelds, maybe even more. They're in! In a push to put their games in more places than ever alongside a massive decline in Series console sales, the understanding was Xbox has no place in the hardware business and may as well bow out. With today's news, it appears to be quite the opposite. Alongside this news presented by Xbox President, Sarah Bond, we also learned there will be more storefronts and games will continue to go everywhere. The moves made by Xbox have even extracted comments out of PlayStation execs during a fireside chat about their financials. As they continue to turn heads, we'll do our best to unpack how this even makes sense for Xbox.Timestamps:0:00:00 - Intro0:03:16 - Health Is Wealth0:24:50 - Xbox's video capture issue0:30:22 - Will Xbox deliver a GOTY winner?0:44:22 - Marathon has been indefinitely delayed1:02:47 - Borderlands 4 will cost $701:11:27 - Final Fantasy 16 is flopping on Xbox?1:26:06 - PlayStation comments on Xbox’s hardware direction1:37:45 - Outer Worlds 2 director responds to the $80 concerns1:47:58 - Crash Team Racing reaches 10 million sales1:51:51 - Silent Hill 1 Remake confirmed1:56:19 - Expedition 33 “improvements” are on the way1:59:48 - What We’re Playing2:25:10 - Xbox details their next generation consoles3:01:24 - Coming soon to Xbox Game Pass3:05:17 - Game Pass Pick Of The Week

I’ve never understood why people treat The Game Awards like they carry so much weight. The fact that The Last of Us Part II beat out Doom Eternal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Ghost of Tsushima in 2020 says a lot. To me, it showed that the show reflects the values of corporate critics and industry talking heads—not the average gamer. Mind you, I did enjoy The Last of Us Part II (for the most part), though definitely far less than the original. That said, you’ll never convince me that the majority of gamers genuinely preferred it over the three titles I mentioned previously. In my eyes, that win felt more like a message—a way to stick it to the gamers who dared to criticize Neil Druckmann’s “masterpiece” in any way. I haven’t taken The Game Awards seriously since then. At this point, I see it more as a mini E3—just a marketing showcase with a few awards tossed in between trailers.

Here is my health is wealth update. Thanks to the Mets, my mental health is not great. 😭

Jacob Lesperance

Death Stranding 2 will win GOTY, lol. For me it's Expedition. But I can see it.

Diddy’s Lube Guy

Matty’s Cerny-esque reading of the Bungie Marathon delay letter had me crying

Daddy T

Thought it was Micah in the thumbnail, racist?

Michael

This podcast just keeps getting better and better. The chemistry between Cog and Matty keeps growing on me. I appreciate the time and effort both put in. Thanks to both of them.

Michael McCoy

Just because they don’t matter to you doesn’t mean they don’t matter. There is real financial gain to being nominated or winning awards, look at Balatro. It saw a massive surge in sales right after TGA. Developers also massively care, it was reported that members from the Black Myth team were crying last year when it lost.

Diddy’s Lube Guy

Cog, do you think FFVII remake pt. 3 is really day and date for Xbox? If it’s on PC, is that basically the same thing by then with the Nextbox?

Breno Bezerra Bluhm

The Last of Us Pt II had a higher metscore than all the games you cited. You may not like it but it’s win was absolutely normal lol. It’s “game of the year” not “most popular game of the year”. If you want to talk abou a year the “general gamer” was mad you could talk about 2018 cause to this day people are salty about GOW beating RDR2.

Jacob Lesperance

So I'm understanding Xbox strategy, through the eyes of Cog... Make no money off of store fronts, by having multiple? Sell the console for $1000? This is there winning strategy? Guys.... You're better than this.

Your Boi Nicky V

Wasn't that 3.5m figure for FF16 BS, considering it sold 3m at launch. Also, Rebirth probably sold even less so sales aren't indicative of quality.

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

Agree with most of this. The critical carried TLOU2. That game was a step down from the first one.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

PS5 Pro is $700. PS6 is going to be flirting with $1,000. It's not crazy to imagine a beefy next gen Xbox being a grand

Jacob Lesperance

The next Playstation is not going to touch $1000. Maybe $600. And if it does.... It will not sell well, and they are dumb. But they will have a store front to subsidize it. Same as Nintendo. My point is Xbox can't sell a $300 series S. They ain't selling a $1000 console.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

I completely understand what you're saying. I also think gamers need to get used to the idea of a console costing the same as a decent couch

Jacob Lesperance

I agree. And i honestly don't mind paying for a high end product at all. I just know most of the casual consumer market will not.

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

Why do people care about this? It's Microsoft's issue to make it profitable. Not ours. In the meantime, enjoy an awesome consumer move. Eating gooood

Jacob Lesperance

If you enjoy something, you have an interest in how it does. My favorite mom and pop pie place just closed a few weeks ago. Ya I didn't have a financial stake in the place, but I was very much invested in what they offered. They didn't make enough money so, they went away. I think this way about SP games as well. I don't play online at all, so it is very much in my best interest that those types of games do well. I just like inside baseball. The business of games is just as interesting to me as playing them.

Casey Cieslikowski

lol can Matty go one week without mentioning he is making a game?

Big titty drinker

Cog you can’t claim expedition 33 as an Xbox game and say that’s Xboxes GOTY nominee because it’s in game pass. lol that’s crazy mental gymnastics.

BamAHamYum

I find it frustrating that Xbox has introduced a new “winning strategy” seemingly every year or two over the past half-decade, and each time, their fanbase shifts the goalposts around core ideas like exclusivity, first-party output, and the overall state of the console market. At this point, anything Xbox says should be taken with a grain of salt. It makes more sense to wait and see the actual results of these strategies before buying into bold claims about the future of the brand—or the industry. What really annoys me though, is the narrative propagated by a significant portion of the community that paints Xbox—the clear under performer among the big three—as some kind of trailblazing visionary that’s supposedly leading us into the future of gaming. It feels less like innovation and more like marketing spin for a company still trying to find its footing. In what world does the company that’s clearly in last place suddenly become the one with the so-called “winning strategy” that’s going to redefine how we play games now and in the future? Especially when their two main competitors continue to dominate by sticking to the very principles that have defined console gaming since the beginning. It’s hard to buy into the idea that the brand constantly shifting direction is somehow the one that’s figured it all out.

Walk Forward Cutscene

30% digital store cuts will be under fire for everyone now that Apple has fallen. Microsoft has this platform called “Windows.” I think they will be fine

Jacob Lesperance

Windows store only takes a 12% cut already. They have been like that for years. Everyone still just uses steam.

Walk Forward Cutscene

Matty was 100% correct about FFXVI. Fans of the game act like it sold Witcher 3/Skyrim numbers.

Walk Forward Cutscene

It was a good get for GamePass; idk why you’re twisting his words.

Daddy T

Host of a gaming podcast draws on his experience of making a game to the conversation? Outrageous behaviour

Casey Cieslikowski

lol when you do it 10 times a show for two years lol yes I’d say so.

Daddy T

Say lol again bud

Ahlickaloo

2020 was an off year. One the journalists were in agreement with but everyone else says otherwise

NeO JD

TLOU P2 is the clear winner there to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

NeO JD

The capture situation is a must needed improvement for next console. Even if they just copy what PS does right now. Based on the current lineup, I don’t see Xbox with a GOTY yet. #DDHardware

Pianopower

Once again, you don’t have to post online everything that slightly annoys you. Can’t you just wait for something truly annoying and then bitch about it?

Ahlickaloo

You guys are giving too much credit to that online Randy Borderlands price conversation

Ahlickaloo

I’m just ready to see it already

Ahlickaloo

There’s too much fan/journalist momentum behind E33 for it to lose

Daddy T

You said it again

Bartevious

Can Patreon go one week without mentioning that Matty mentions working on a game
