It was supposed to be a slow news week, so naturally we talked for almost four hours on the latest in gaming. Heading up our show is a recurrent subject: layoffs at Xbox. Despite Phil's claims about a sustainable business, the cuts keep coming. Of course, that leaves us in a bit of a pickle. What parts of Xbox business are faltering? We're about a year removed from last year where Xbox began shutting down multiple teams, so it's not a far cry to say we may be approaching that point. We haven't seen Game Pass numbers in a hot minute, titles like South Of Midnight and Hellblade 2 have questionable sales at best, and the green team is all but officially confirmed to be out on physical games. So, which is it, if any? We gab quite a bit before leaving it to next week where we'll get official confirmation. Plus, Xbox integrating other PC storefronts into their app, righting the record on Final Fantasy XVI, diving into Lies Of P sales figures, and so much more in what was an unexpectedly meaty (oh!) episode of Defining Duke.Timestamps:

Just finished cyberpunk 2077 and it’s one of the best games I have ever played. Hats off to that studio. This is why I play things in a vacuum by myself. If I had rushed to play it when it came out I might have been blinded by the internet mob. All that stupid ass Zeitgeist shit is such a dumb way to play and ingest games. It just leads to people rushing through play throughs just so they can be apart of the “conversation” to only end up not even forming an original genuine opinion on the art and falling victim to groupthink

BamAHamYum

Couldn’t agree more. I played it on PC at launch—before all the skill tree overhauls, performance patches, and the Phantom Liberty DLC—and even then, I loved it. CDPR definitely shouldn’t be let off the hook for botching the console launch, but in my opinion, the core of Cyberpunk was always excellent, and it’s only gotten better over time.

COG, you can absolutely play DS1 on journalist mode. It’s a blast.

I stopped paying attention to games industry around 2008/2009. It’s been great. I’m more aware again now, hence me being a patron to last stand. But even so, this is really the only gaming content I consume. But yes, playing things for yourself are what it should be. If you’re just an average person not in the industry why do you really care about what other people think?

Cloud

Matty is definitely weird about romance in games 😂

Aram

FFXV has a long history behind it that also attributes to its high sales numbers. It has very little to do with launching day and date with XBOX especially considering today’s Xbox platform is not the same.

A classic North Carolina enthusiast. We got it good here

Derriere's Gentlemen's Club circa 2006

Wilmington is a gem. Great food and great breweries in spitting distance to a bunch of awesome beaches. Never knew the retro scene was so strong, gotta check it out

Also in terms of gamepass I’ll say this. I used to think they just put out fodder but the content this year has been insane. That being said the numbers being stagnant don’t surprise me because it’s not a content thing. The reality of the situation to me is that most people don’t burn through games rapidly enough to even justify something like a game pass. Like take me for example. I’m way more into games than the average person but also a normal consumer compared to most in the industry. I play one game at a time and most of the time that takes atleast 2 months to get through… unless you just enjoy trying new games constantly and never finishing anything gamepass just isn’t that attractive because of the utility of it just isn’t there for REGULAR gamers. I get the value aspect of it and if your broke do what you gotta do but for me the time and options is more of the issue not the money and gamepass does nothing to solve that.

Nice to see Matty come around on DS. Glad he enjoyed it.

It’s kinda sad how the whole Splitgate thing was talked about. I get you guys said it wasn’t political and didn’t care but then also Cog said he didn’t care about the politics on display. The thing is, the guy didn’t say anything political. He just had a meme hat and was just trying to joke around. I find it highly ridiculous that people like Greg Miller can go out on stage at a developer conference and say fuck Elon Musk etc and no one stands up to say anything about it. Yet this guy wears a hat with a joke on it, and people act like he murdered everyone in Gaza. It’s absolutely ridiculous. With how Matty was treated with Dragon Age, I would think there would have been a little bit more understanding and less judgement. I’m so tired of extreme left politics getting shoved in my face and all of our faces constantly and to be expected not to say anything

As someone who Platinum’d Mindseye (yeah…) it’s important to clarify it’s not a GTA clone. It’s very linear and still very Rockstar but more like LA Noire or Max Payne 3. You can explore a little but there’s not loads of side missions or anything to do. The performance improved dramatically with the first few patches and it was fun, although very basic. The story however feels so incomplete - if you’re curious go look up the ending 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

Eric

Hearing the name Mark Gerhard come up completely unrelated to Runescape took me back. I had to double check to make sure it was the same guy.

Walk Forward Cutscene

I’ve complained about this several times before, but it’s really frustrating that you guys only look at Hi-Fi Rush when talking about the Tango shutdown/sale, and completely ignore that their higher budget games, Ghostwire Tokyo and Evil Within 2, both flopped.

Michael

Imagine getting triggered because a ceo wore a hat, but not a word to say when companies put gay flags all over their games and social media. Poor Matty, keep your head up.

Diddy’s Lube Guy

Colin, you’re seeing more contributions from other porters because of the work you’ve done to build the roads and deliver packages.

Your conclusion makes little sense to me since it reads like you think we portrayed ourselves as strongly disagreeing with your stance. I dunno how much clearer we needed to be, but feel free to write in on this next week if you'd like to hear more. We're happy to dive deeper on this type of subject matter. - Matty

Matty LSM

Write in if you check the stores out. Game Giant and Video Game Time! Both fantastic. - Matty

I need to move ASAP! - Matty

Very good point about burn rate and play time. Makes you wonder. - Matty

PairOfShuse

It’s cool. It just sorta seemed a little different. I honestly could have just misinterpreted it and took it the wrong way.

“This is combining 5 and Royal” nope it’s not lol

One game every 2 months would equal 6 games a year. Let's say you take 3 months, which would equal 4 games a year. If you pay full price, Gamepass Ultimate costs 20 a month at 240 a year. In your situation, you spend (assuming full price) 420 or 280 on gaming a year. Gamepass has the potential to save you money and give you access to WAY more games you have access now. The value is there for you. I'm a father, have a full time job, and on average play 10 to 15 hours a week, usually at night after the kids fall asleep. Gamepass is an INSANE value for me. It has nothing to do with broke or not (I'm nowhere near broke). It's about value. It would be absolutely stupid for me not to subscribe. Outside of paying for internet, it's the best value out of any subscription I pay for.

Matty, TMNT Mutants Unleashed was GARBAAAAGGGEEE. My son (8), doesn't want to touch another TMNT game because we tried that together. Game singlehandedly ruined the franchise in my kids eyes. #DDstorefront

Pan Ic

FF16 sold less due to people getting burnt by FF15. That game was both a waste of time AND money.

Save The Game Media

Matty needs to stand down on the Like a Dragon slander. Lol

Daddy T

Quick correction Matty, that was only P5R! Combined with the original it’s over 10 million copies, fucking bonkers numbers

Daddy T

Greg really rubbed me the wrong way with that one, just stfu and present the award

I expected those Sega sales to be bigger. Metaphor only hitting 2M feels like a crime. To Cog’s thing on difficulty: I almost always play games on “baby ass baby mode” as the What’s Good Games ladies used to say. I’m there for the story. I’m like you Cog, I don’t wanna be in a bad mood playing games, or worse feeling like I’m wasting my time. The more options the better. I might go and play Lies of P now myself. #DDStorefront

Gooch Gobbler

For real, currently playing Expedition 33 on easy and may come back to Lies of P now! I love the world of soulslikes but I do not have the skill or more importantly like you say: the time

Gooch Gobbler

All I heard Matty say was that he thought it was kinda lame, which it is lol it's hacky. Our employees told our management the same thing when they tried to make "Make (industry) Great Again" posts, just a bad idea and not very clever or funny. Loving Splitgate 2 though, hope it's successful
