PlayStation 5 has officially turned five, giving us much to reflect upon. Has the console lived up to its potential, left folks disappointed, or fallen somewhere in between? We get into that -- alongside new Sony financials that paint an admittedly rosy picture -- before getting into the meat of our show. Two new Sony-aligned games have been revealed, but they've left many potential players puzzled, as neither offering is actually on PlayStation hardware. For starters, NCSoft's long-rumored Horizon MMO is real. It's called Steel Frontiers and it actually looks really nice. But it's only on PC and mobile. Meanwhile, a new Ratchet & Clank game has also been showcased, an online arena shooter called Ranger Rumble. But it too eschews PS5 and PS4, instead going straight to mobile platforms only. What gives? Why does Sony seem half-in on these off-platform initiatives, all the while neglecting their core audience that could give these respective titles the boost they need? Is it time for them to break old habits and embrace a more cogent multiplatform direction that centers PlayStation first and foremost? Plus: Sony's new 27" gaming monitor has people intrigued, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Spirits is getting another closed test, Elden Ring: Nightreign is receiving some much-needed DLC, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What do we think of Valve's new Steam Machine PC-console hybrid? In any given game's menus, where should subtitle options be nestled: General, Audio, or Graphics? Does ARC Raiders success potentially benefit Marathon? Is Dustin wielding his power over Brad in unsavory ways?

Excited to chomp on this meaty episode! Been looking forward to it all week.

The Lizard King

I hope Lex Friedman is mentioned again so I can see the face Chris pulled last week 😂

NinjaDC

I got got. I’m a long time Ratchet and Clank fan who hates mobile games, but I have to support my boy. And Ratchet and Clank 3 & Deadlocked had fun multiplayer and coop. So I do have hope it will be fun. And heck, the OG Ratchet and Clank phone game was fun back in my Sony Ericsson swivel phone. Hopefully this game does well in markets like China, and motivates Sony to finally release those classic ports or remakes.

Addison117

If the steam machine (GabeCube) is sub $600 then PlayStation has its next competitor as well the frame going up against the already dead psvr 2.

Girth Brooks

What an absolutely bone headed take on the ARC Raiders review. If a game was made by slaves, you’re still reviewing the quality of the game itself. You can write another article reviewing your thoughts on slavery. The pyramids are amazing. They were made by slaves. Slavery is bad. There, it’s that easy.

Girth Brooks

I don’t understand why the Steam Machine isn’t a Sony contender. I’m a PlayStation owner, but if you’re gona give me a console that has a vastly larger library, has PS games, better deals on games, and no charge for online multiplayer, I would have to be retarded or a fanboy to not switch.

Nick

Totally agree with Chris that the deep technical inner workings of game development are the most fascinating thing to me. Really wish I had been motivated when I was younger to follow that career path. “Art math” is the perfect way to describe it.

John

Chris’s Trump impression about crossing the Delaware made me accidentally suddenly LOL at my office job like an asshole

The Lizard King

It’s not going to compete with PS5. A digital PS5 will drop in price and be cheaper than the Steam Machine. PlayStation just has a much better hold on the market too. 90% of Steamdeck owners already used Steam. It just doesn’t have the same weight as Nintendo or Sony currently.

The Lizard King

I know it’s a handled but still, the report that just came out showing that only 10% of Steam Deck users didn’t use steam prior shows people just don’t really jump to Valve products. Sony has such a better hold of the market. PlayStation has and is advertised in so many places, all around the world.

Girth Brooks

Oh I agree Sony occupies its position based purely on marketing, name recognition, etc. That keeps the casuals. But for us enthusiasts who are in the know, I don’t understand how you could compare the features of both options and not consider making a move to Steam Machine.

Girth Brooks

Chris is such a hater. Kinda sucks.

Bogey

Concerning the Elden Ring streams, I think a nice middle ground is playing on the side and just doing side stuff, dungeons and exploring around and grinding levels, but save the main story stuff for the stream. And if you come across any cool shit offline just save the clip and show it to us on stream. However I for one would gladly watch dozens and dozens of episodes of the adventures of Colon Montgomery. I just don’t want the audience to get burnt out, or Colin forgetting how to play in between the episodes.

Statistical Barista

It really is funny how Steam literally does everything the fellas love: focus on 60 fps not just raw graphics, has a portable device to play all your games natively, total cross compatibility. But they are so convinced PC gaming is hard and that narrative is so hard to shift. Like what more could Steam do to convince you? I think this device is a perfect example for why Xbox failed. People just want confirmation bias for their choice, specs, cost and features be damned.

Roberto Ramirez

PC gaming is annoying often. My buddy has a steam deck, and as a console gamer he struggled to get Valheim to connect to my locally hosted server. Also, discord isn't available on steam deck so he had to use his phone with earbuds. So yeah, it's simple, easy, great, and fun.

cam darcy

Thanks for the read out boys I appreciate the laugh a lot during this time.

Carl of rng

They would put this game on Xbox cause of the windows store plus a deal with gamepass. Colin there is more than just Xbox in the Microsoft ecosystem. Think you need to consider that more as well when you talk about the next Xbox. Just my 2 cents.

Bob Spiers

Hope your doing well Gene. I’m going through the whole chemo thing and have been for nearly 2 years. Your story has really helped me. I’m not sure if it’s related to that but either way all the best! It’s hard to explain to people who haven’t been through it how shit it can be

BigDumbStupidIdiot

The Gabecube and the Microsoft Gaming hybrid pc are targeted a VERY niche audience. They'll both lucky to put up Wii U numbers.

Jeff Willingham

I personally have my ps5 set up at my desk and hooked up to my computer monitor most of the time. I just basically have my own man cave in the house. During the work week I don’t play very much and I get that time during the weekend to go into my isolated room that I house my reptiles in and can turn the lights down and play my pc or PlayStation. I didn’t think it was that rare of a thing to do lol.

KB

Jez on the Xbox 2 show said he think's Magnus is going to do 20 million units. I think that's insane for a $1,200 pre-built.

Black Detective in Dexter

Yeah I understood what it stands for but who calls them that? I've never heard anyone abbreviate "video game documentary" into "vi doc".

Screwed Mcfucked

Biggest challenges for the mainstream audience will be certain anti cheat incompatibilities with Linux / things like Minecraft and Fortnite not being available on steam. You like playing single player/indie games though? This thing should be sick for that.

Screwed Mcfucked

One can enjoy blues music without enjoying what would make a man so goshdang sad

BigDumbStupidIdiot

I respect Jez but he's living in a Xbox bubble. $1,200 is a rent payment. Magnus, realistically, will do 5 million

Brandon Bishop

I accidentally set my podcast speed to 1.2x when I started this episode and I thought I was having a stroke

AngelOfCake

It's missing other stuff too like a Netflix app. Not saying they should go full xbone but needing another device to stream creates friction. Netflix is probably in the ten top for hours using a PS5. Its great to see another competitor in the space though.

Michael McCoy

Not to be that guy, but the pyramids actually were not built by slaves.

Sucking Duck for Quack

I love ARC Raiders. I’ve played almost 50 hours since launch. Using AI voices is absolutely a knock against the game. I don’t want this shit normalized. I’m sure it was used to save money and they only have one game under their belt prior to launch (The Finals) and I’m sure they weren’t totally sure ARC would be a success. They could have done what Ninja Theory did for Hellblade and get a random producer to do voices so they would, theoretically, always have them around to do more voices for new content. They also used AI for the ARC’s. How they move and patrol is completely dictated by machine learning via AI. That’s cool as hell given their robots to begin with but AI for human voices? Nah.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Horizon is the Avatar of video games. Its fine but why are we getting sooooo much of it?

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Has to use Discord on the phone? Steam copied Nintendo bar for bar, flow for flow

CombatSneeze

Ditto. It’s been killer to use a mouse and keyboard for Battlefield 6 as well

Jonathan Turner

DRRAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEEE?!?!?!??!?!??! Sorry, had to.

Take a wild guess from which studio the head of first party game from.... It is what it is.

Addison117

The last physical PC Game I got was GTA V, it was 7 DVDS and still required connecting to Rockstar social club.

Wall bouncing in WW1

The monster hunter mmo gameplay focused new entry seems like a fine idea. Now as to why it’s not on consoles is baffling.

Michael McCoy

The term was often used by Bungie back in the day, and I assume that’s where Chris picked it up from. The videos were literally called vi docs

Deemac

Listen I know it's fashionable to shit on Herman Hulst nowadays, but this is kinda BS tbh to suggest that's the only reason why they focus on Horizon so much. Did you see the report that the Horizon series has sold 40 million units - gonna take a wild guess that's why they're leaning into this IP so much. Maybe you don't know anyone who likes Horizon (seems like this is the case for many), but the facts are that this is a hugely successful franchise for PlayStation.

Deemac

Jez is out of his mind

Deemac

Or maybe you really like the PS ecosystem, the trophies etc, prefer to play with the convenience on your couch on a more powerful machine(which the PS5 already is), and don't want to wait an undetermined time to play Sony 1st Party games (if ever in some cases)? There's many reasons you wouldn't switch to this, other than being "retarded or a fanboy" I myself as a non-PC gamer am very interested in this, as I have built up a small library of Steam games since getting a Steam Deck - but fact is I don't use it that much nowadays. I also like the idea of this machine being able to emulator older stuff too. All of this depends on it being an appropriate price too however. And I would still imagine I'll prefer to play the bigger, most demanding games on my PS5 (which I already do)

Deemac

I swear so many people don't understand the concept of market share, and consumer loyalty to brands. PS has a strangle hold on that casual gaming market. Steam is where a lot of hardcore, technical enthusiasts are. That space is growing, but not nearly enough for the PS5 to be under serious threat from the Steam machine. What it is really going to eat into is the people who would have bought a next gen Xbox.

Deemac

I wonder would there be this same level of outcry about this Horizon MMO not coming to console, if the Guerilla-developed multiplayer game was announced first? To me it seems pretty obvious that these are 2 different kinds of game, in different genres, targeting completely different audiences. Sure the trailer looked kinda cool - but if I think about how a typical mobile game plays, I can't imagine wanting to play this on the PS5 lol - and personally I'm just not into those FTP kinda games. Hopefully that other game gets announced soon, and looks like a higher quality product which you'd expect from Guerilla, and comes to PS5 and Steam in the near future so people are satisfied then

KB

Oh, I was just trying to make sense of why we’re getting so much Horizon content lately — I’m actually a huge fan myself. I’ve platinumed both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, and I’m really looking forward to the reveal of the in-house multiplayer project. I think if it looks anything like the mobile game could be a hit.

WhatDarrenPlays

Colin has always held this feeling that the context around a launch of a product is as important as the product itself when it comes to a review. I respect the take, but I cannot relate to that at all. I agree with you that personally I try to separate the art from the artist, but the artist is totally worth talking about as its own study.

WhatDarrenPlays

A couple things regarding ARC Raiders. 1) you’re sick of talking about it, it’s been on the show like 2 weeks now, and you also complained that games like hollow knight are not talked about after launch. Well now you have one to talk about. 2) The AI in the game used machine learning to navigate and train to follow player movements. It also moves itself purely based on physical thrust from its thrusters and legs, so when you blast off a thruster it dynamically without preset animations will try to recover and continue the hunt. So Gran Turismo aren’t the first or only mainstream game to do so. 3) on Gran Turismo, AI in racing games pretty much always follows a linear path, aiming for an optimal racing line. Human-like ai allows for deviations, simulating more natural behaviour.

Frank G.

Shout out to the GabeCube. Gonna sell my series S to make my new emulator set up. And to replace Xbox , fuck I'm sick if hearing of Arc raiders. It looks so vanilla to me.

E_DOUBLE

There are indeed an overwhelming amount of games worth your time this gen, but I think the sentiment that this gen is mid is because the highs of the previous gens hasn't been matched yet. I would consider only Elden Ring and BGIII as the real games of the generation, and Elden Ring came to PS4. Even if I bent the knee to GOWR and Cyberpunk they also came to PS4. I love the hardware, but would still like to see more truly generational games released. Fingers crossed for GTA 6

Vladimir Grabbinmikov

James Cameron at least understands the laws of storytelling and can still illicit an emotion from the audience even with something generic like avatar.

DogMeat

As a therapist I agree Collin medication os often the easy way out people look for with mental health. Therapy should at the very least be done at the same time if not instead of medication

Pan Ic

I have not had a console since PS4 and sold it after beating Bloodborne. The Steam Machine sure is tempting as something to put in the living room. When it comes to new users I think it can be a good alternative for people who are yet to start building their library. Remains to be seen on how they market and sell it. If they run the Steam Deck tactics it will probably remain as an niche/enthusiast machine and not truly become mainstrema.

Breaking Bot’s Weld Jr played by Robot John MIDI

Arc Raiders’ popularity feels like a psyop. Maybe the feeling of playing it can’t be understood through just watching it, because I’m just not getting it. It looks boring to me. 🤷‍♂️

Frank G.

I'm not even a huge multi-player guy but that game really just seems like flavor of the month. And that's pretty much it. I'm just not engaging in any multi-player but the finals looks better than that thing.

Evan Westendorf

I wonder if the Extraction Shooter trajectory could mirror that of the Battle Royale boom, to the benefit of Marathon. PUBG was the first big BR, but was scrappy, janky, unintuitive and unfriendly to non-PC gamers (like Tarkov). Then came along competitors and copycats, which really expanded the genre to the stratosphere. Fortnite innovated on the formula and dominated (and still dominates) the BR scene, but there was/is still room for other players to be very successful too. Plenty of folks were introduced to the IDEA of BR through PUBG and Fortnite, but APEX and Warzone provided other alternatives to people that liked the formula, but wanted a different art style or gameplay conceit, etc. So I think that Arc Raiders could be the Fortnite or PUBG of extraction shooters, that gets people hooked on the formula, and if Marathon could then swoop in, in a timely manner before people tire of the formula, and offer something different, they could be very successful.

Jacob Lesperance

I use a 1440p, 32inch HDR monitor i play on in my office. I play 90% of my gaming on that. Ps5 upstairs, but prefer my office. Also have a lazy boy office lounge, lol. More comfortable than a couch. So yes, we do exist.

Vladimir Grabbinmikov

Colin doesn’t “get the excitement” from Bethesda games such as starfield. It might help if he played one within the last ten years.

PRETENTIEUX

yeah the horizon MMO is supposed to be a sony/playstation ad. it's not meant for existing fans really

PRETENTIEUX

that's very insensitive to all those stroken throughout history

PRETENTIEUX

steam deck is an exception case and is known for being more difficult to get certain things to work. it's nothing like just setting up a modern PC to run games.

PRETENTIEUX

personally i think it's an awesome idea to keep one long-term project game like that running for the streams at a time. and just keep chopping away at it slowly every other stream or something. this gives viewers an incentive to stay subbed and catch the next episode they've been following for months, which isn't something LSM really has

Supes

glad to hear Dustin championing the Mac experience. I bought an M3 Max Studio last year and it is my favorite desktop machine I've ever had by a mile. It's gloriously easy to use, and also pretty beefy—wasn't cheap, but this thing is going to last me more than a decade easily. Also? Surprisingly solid for gaming using apps like Crossover or Parallels. Earlier this year I played Elden Ring at a smooth 60 FPS at 1440p using Crossover with no issues. Mac don't crack.

NeO JD

Music on MySpace was way better before they redid the site. RIP. Shout out to Tom. On the review talk: I wouldn’t pay attention to either of those reviews. They’re disingenuous to the actual material of both games being reviewed. If they actually get credited on Metacritic and affect the overall, that’s a damn shame. Most of the Patreons here could do better. On the Steam Machine: I’m 1 of the rare people that doesn’t have a PC but has a Steam Deck. I love the idea of the SM but it’ll come down to the price. Sadly I think it’ll be a little more expensive than I’d like it to be.

Wayde

We're probably not gonna see a booming economy until at the earliest 2030 unfortunately. I think PlayStation representatives letting it slip that we're halfway through the life cycle is a nice way of saying that they don't foresee wanting to release a new console until after Trump is gone.

Gamer-Man

Skill-based matchmaking sucks for a couple of reasons… 1. It reduces the satisfaction of getting better at the game, because the better you get, the harder the game gets. It’s similar to enemies scaling to your level in RPGs. 2. It makes online matches more predictable. Part of the fun of playing online, in my opinion, is that you don’t know the skill levels of who you’re playing with, so you’ll randomly alternate between games where you feel like a god and games where you have to become a try-hard. With skill-based matchmaking, every match is sweaty. I think the best solution is making non-skill-based matchmaking the default, and allowing players to opt into skill base matchmaking via a ranked playlist that earns them XP faster.

Save The Game Media

Stand down on the subtitle hate Dustin. Subtitles for everything (movies, tv, games) regardless if I’m Using speakers, headphones, Etc

Gooch Gobbler

Anecdotal but I finally bought a prebuilt after years of thinking it as too much trouble to game on PC. Would not start due to a bad installation, then a month later also blue screened again due to a driver issue. Only thing I do/have installed is games. Also there was a wifi receiver I had to connect to make sure it connected to wifi. Never once heard of that in my life, why would it not just come in the tower? Also, my headset got bricked cause my PC crashed in the middle of updating it. Headset same brand as the PC. This was within the first 3 months of owning it. It's not simple lol

Sean McCann

Colin kept saying that first party games as a service sales could only include hell divers two & MLB the show, but doesn’t that also include destiny 2?

Derriere's Gentlemen's Club circa 2006

Cross gen games and a constant promotion of live service titles soured my view of this gen. The last couple years have helped turn it around a good deal though

Spike Sméagol

The story of Colin giving Dustin a new job title while rolling a joint is the stuff of legend lol

Andrew Grishaw

If you're playing competitive on line shooters, monitors are better whether you're on console or pc. Period. Many people play console on monitor for that reason. In my living room, I have 2tvs, 1 monitor, and 3 playstations.

David Seger

The double take on hogwarts legacy was wild haha. "This is fine but what I got mad about is dumb"

Bailey Callis

Wonder if we will ever get an episode again without Colin deep throating the portal

Aaron

The SBMM (skill based match making) issue is you don’t always want to play at 100% when playing a multiplayer game.

Walk Forward Cutscene

The revenue numbers for Horizon in the Insomniac leak were not that high for all the copies that it’s supposedly “sold.” I don’t think the entire series has grossed even half of an Avatar movie

Walk Forward Cutscene

You’ll be paying $1,200 for your PS6 when Sony raises PS+ essential to $100/year

John D

Okay I got so much to say about your conversation in the steam deck I might up my patreon just so y'all can read it out but here's the gist of it

John D

I actually think the steam deck is going to be the most destructive thing to the industry in a minute in very much threatening the PS5 why because it's just a better value proposition for your average consumer then a PS4 like if you're going to say that console exclusive aren't the main reason to get a PlayStation then why wouldn't I get a steam date games are going to be cheaper pretty much everything that comes out for the PlayStation is going to come out for steam except for maybe a few exclusives which Sony has proven will come down the line so if you're a bus driver and you got maybe 800 bucks to spend on a console and this is all you're going to play for the next five or so years why wouldn't you pick the console that's going to be the cheapest for those five years and still have everything you want to play with extra functionality

Ryan

Man your guys’ new game sounds so cool plot wise honestly. Selfishly I wish it was at least going for an SNES/ps1 era look. Call me a woke Gen Z twink but I don’t love the NES vibe especially with a world as cool as this because I’m just imagining how much more you could do mirroring Symphony of the Night.

Ryan

Arc raiders is 100% the Fortnite of extraction shooters and I don’t say that in a bad way lol. I’ve never played an extraction before and I’m helplessly addicted. I think the hardcore elements of Tarkov would have turned me off at first, but after played AR I now am itching to try it out a little.

YP-Berserk

Every Bethesda game from the last ten years has been bad. All two of them.
