In the wake the reveal of the PC-only MMORPG Steel Frontiers late last year, the other long-rumored Horizon multiplayer game has finally been announced. It's called Hunters Gathering, it's in development internally at Guerrilla, and it's set to launch on both PS5 and PC at some point in the future. Excited? Well, some of you (and us!) are. But the response at this early hour has been mixed. Is Horizon being overexposed? Where's the third core game? What's with this obsession with multiplayer? Im not necessarily a fan of the horizon series but I can appreciate the level of detail and immersion that high fidelity world brings to the screen. I'm so fatigued with Sony first party. I'm not complaining about the general output this generation by 3rd party its been fantastic. But forcing most of your best teams to make live service instead of doing what they are good it is crazy. Like the amount of time and money wasted trying to chase the live service dream has turned it into the lost generation. The fact that Jan had to reassure everyone that they still make single player games is very telling. Its a simple math problem that if Guerrilla wasn't making this game Horizon 3 would be right around the corner. All this reminds me after WOW came out and everyone was trying to make an MMORPG but none of them came close and most died.

For how badly Sony wants/needs their own live service to really hit its so funny that their next big attempt is Fortnite 2: Rise of the 400 Pound Woman. But for real though, this feels like a total relic of the early 2020’s. Random aside but stay with me: the new Horizon is very similar to how I feel about the ‘Kamala HQ’ sudden revival. Guys if you want to make sure we have a republican president for the rest of our lives, let’s still lead with ‘progressive Gen-Z think tank’ as our main opposition against trump. The Last Jedi was truely devastating. I honestly felt sick about 10 mins in. I was hoping I was being Punkd. It was that shocking. It wasn't just bad, it made decisions that torched the ability to recover. There was no coming back. Star Wars mattered to people. It was shared with and passed down by older brothers and fathers. Its a tired talking point, I know, but fuck that movie. It's hard to make something that can implode a whole popular culture phenomenon and financial asset the way Last Jedi did.

Colin’s point about “everyone hating everything” is just wrong. Not seeing a lot of hate for a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms because it’s actually good. Any live service announcement is going to be met with a lot of negativity because players are aware of the hit rate of the genre. Doesn’t mean the project will fail, but the market is saturated and it’s hard to break through. My post is long enough but I’ll also add that Xbox also disproves Colin’s point. When they have a good showcase/developer direct, people are positive. When they announce another round of layoffs/cancellations/AI slop people react negatively.

TLJ is totally a fine movie especially on rewatch. It has far more interesting elements to it than Rise of the Skywalker and is an all-around better movie, but people aren’t ready for that conversation. One of the biggest mistakes of the new trilogy is not having all three be directed by the same person to be able to set up and follow through with some of the concepts TFA set up.

I like Horizon 1 & 2, but don't love them. I rarely play multiplayer games, so I wouldn't have thought the Horizon multiplayer game would be for me. After seeing one frame of the trailer, that's confirmed. I find the art style and heroes completely ugly and unappealing. But to be fair, as a 38 year old man, I don't think I'm the target audience. It looks like it's designed for kids and early teens with that look.

The Horizon talk and the talk about negatively I think is kind of misguided and biased. To say the new Horizon game doesn’t look like Fortnite so extremely either looking the other way, bias, or talk from people who don’t pay attention to just how much looks like this. It’s an extremely over exposed art style and looks very samey. It’s kind of like the whole Cal Arts style in American animation is one of the few style of American cartoons that is just extremely old hat (and in my opinion never looked good). If you like that then you will be ok with the look of this new Horizon game. If you don’t, it will turn you off completely. It just feels kind of disingenuous when anything that looks like anime gets glib comments from Colin saying “of course Chris, you don’t have anything to say about this” or similar comments. How is that not exactly what is being criticized in this podcast just in the groups direction? At least with anime, compared to American animation anyways, there is waaaaaay more variety in visual style. It just comes off as anything I find interesting looking is ok and everything I don’t like the look of, it’s ok for me to criticize, but no one can complain about the thing I personally think is ok. Add into that, the reason why I think that people are negative on these big franchises is because they have increasingly become not even just checklists, but bland looking checklists and even more preachy a lot of the time. Hence Spiderman 2 being ridiculed while the first one is looked at more fondly. Same with Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. One thing that I just don’t agree with as a point is that just because something sells, doesn’t mean it is good. Tons of saccharine, bland, mindless garbage sells. That is not a good point of argument. I play a pretty large amount of and variety of games. So far this year I’ve played Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Bright Memory Infinite, all the DLC for DBZ Kakarot, Anno Mutationem, Signalis, and currently playing Lollipop Chainsaw. I’ve mainly been sticking to short games in wait for Resident Evil 9. All of these games are vastly differently to one another. While there may be a lot of negative talk, there has also been a lot of positive talk too. Just because it’s not targeted towards these huge companies franchises that tend to push agendas on purpose, go for a more broad bland look in a lot of ways, and tend to be less unique than lower top tier studios, mid size developers, and small developers, doesn’t mean all of gaming is infested with negative talk. Little example - if we went by this podcast, only Dustin would sign the praises of Nier and this would be seen as the series not being good. When in fact, it’s sold tons of copies using the logic earlier. It all depends on what you gravitate towards. Me personally, visual look and attitude will a lot of the time dictate if I’m going to spend the time playing a game since there are so many options. I see normal Horizon and it interests me. I see this new Horizon game and it looks bland, tropey, and I just don’t like the whole attitude games that look like this go for. You might feel the opposite and that’s ok. But saying people are just hating or that a broken clock is right twice a day, is pretty dismissive.

The thing is, you can easily tell the difference between someone who is just hating on things and people who have legitimate criticism or even hate towards something. Going to social media platforms where people give most thoughts in a single sentence and ignore anything longer than that is not going to provide much more than surface level reaction, which in and of itself can have some use as well. The thing is, the podcast used to complain about nerd spaces being overly positive. Now it’s the opposite complaints when honestly both exist at the same time.

One of the most reasonable responses I've seen to this whole thing. I'm pretty much the same as you, not huge on multiplayer games and on the surface this new game doesn't look like it's for me. I'll still give it a go most likely to see how it plays, but ultimately I just find it obvious that they're targeting a different audience with this live service game, and that's why they chose to go with a different aesthetic and style - the Guerilla director made a point of explaining why they went a different direction with this game. I find it completely understandable if people don't like the look of this game, but also I think alot of people are just pissed off that every game isn't designed with them in mind, which I find very strange tbh

I loved old Star Trek as well. Watched the first episode of Academy in the hopes it might swing back more to the older stuff. Nope... Its the same modern slop that Discovery was. Complete with dumb millennial humour... "I swallowed my combadge" really? I miss the TNG days where the episodes were about ethical dilemmas, and approaching them with deliberate care. New Trek is all about the characters, and none of them are interesting at all. When all you focus on are immutable traits like skin colour and sexual preference it really becomes ironically shallow.

Rogue One has not aged well and it does not stand up after all these years. Go watch it again. At best, it is slightly better than the disastrous VII, VIII, and IX. They wrote an entire movie about Jyn Erso while giving her character no depth other than she loved her dad. Awful movie, worse than Solo and IX. The only piece of Star Wars media that is truly great (excluding games) and worthy of the adoration it gets is Andor. Andor is so good, I would even say it is probably the best TV mini series of the past 15 years. Andor is what Star Wars should have been: a lesson on what the price of rebellion is, the toll it exacts on the innocent, and the cost of doing nothing in face of real tyranny. I maintain that "Nobody's Listening!" is one of the best episodes of a series of all time. I cannot think of another episode of another show that comes close. Maybe, "Two Cathedrals" in the West Wing.

The AI discussion has become far too delusional in this episode. The idea that an LLM is being talked about in the same breath as an AI version of a human brain is absolute nonsense. I prefer when you guys just say you don’t like people losing jobs instead of going into the future of this tech in which you have zero clue how it even works. Actively tuning a model to not embarrass you when generating spaghetti is not close to having it make a full video game. A video can have mistakes and work, a game cannot because it crashes. These models are not precise they are best guessing. Making a full game requires precision and nothing indicates that yet.

I feel like the Horizon adventure talk was very disingenuous. In the past they have railed again companies that have done this calling it an opportunity cost that takes away from the main game. Resulting in the game that should be focused on being pushed out way farther than it should have been and landing the devs in hot water for releasing a game that nobody asked for. Make no mistake about Horizon adventures, this is ultimately a cash grab with really no new concepts and art and characters that are borrowed from other live service games. I don't know if the game will be successful or not, but if I was a betting man I would say this is dead on arrival. I guess I'm just not sure why the conversation from the Sacred guys is so different on this game than the games of the past that have pulled this very same move.

On the Star Wars sequel convo, Colin said it was insane there was no plan and a minute later says JJ Abrams would have been the right man to continue the story after TFA. But Abrams is as much to blame as anyone for the lack of a plan. As a storyteller he’s known for two things: 1) nostalgia bait rehashes, and 2) his “mystery boxes,” (his own term) where he lays out multiple compelling mysteries where he himself doesn’t have the answer and they in fact aren’t designed to have a satisfying answer. Johnson decided to very bluntly reject and dispense with those half-baked mysteries in TLJ, and then Abrams himself came back to shoehorn them back in with the lamest answers possible. It’s all a mess and I have to classify it all as fan fiction in my head to continue to be a fan of the franchise.

DQ7r is charming, but an exceptionally easy and watered down version of the original(s). I was excited for this version, but as a fan of the series and being substantially into Reimagined now, it leaves a lot to be desired. To the guy writing in about DQ7r, I'd encourage you to not let this be your first and last attempt at turn-based JRPGs. First impressions are important, and I'm sorry to hear this wasn't a good one.

As an amateur artist I really appreciated the AI conversation. I think AI in the right hands could help creators with some tasks, but I agree that the people that like it the most tend to be uncreative. I’ve long had a saying “Virgins can’t sing love songs”, because they’ve never had their heart broken and emotions shredded. Listen to young people sing a song like Imagine and compare it to Lennon or Cornell’s versions. Also, things an “AI artist” didn’t do: Study perspective Study anatomy Study lighting Study storytelling Study cinematography Take art theory, color theory, art, and anatomy classes. Read about art. Lots of reading and studying. Studying other artists. Staring at the same image for hours multiple times. Drawing. Actually drawing. And failing. A lot. And the complete mind bending anxiety showing it to other people. Getting your art ripped to shreds by a professional. Laying out an image. Most people don’t understand that basically everything in a film scene or painting or drawing was done intentionally. And lastly, me. My line work looks like my line work. It’s why AI content almost always looks the same. Same attempt at realism or the same cartoon style because it’s a thing uncreative people don’t even think about. It’s why so many people went crazy when Studio Ghibli AI art was available. Real artists want their art to look like they made it. It happens with digital art all the time. Look at amateur anime and it consistently looks the same.
