Let's go!!! Can't wait to listen

Dante B

If Nioh 3 is GOTY we’ve had a very bad year, and I like Nioh 3.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Hunters Gathering is very clearly a kids game but the art style doesn't hit the Horizon vibe. Its not Concord bad but it fucking sucks

Cai

Excited to re-marathon the Resi games after 9. Don’t want to burn out before hand.

BamAHamYum

It was extremely refreshing to listen to an intelligent conversation about the issues modern western studios have with creating appealing character design.

Joe B

Cant say I understand why anyone would care if FF7 remake has an easy platinum now. Its not your account their getting it on and if someone already has it pre update, they can show that to fulfill their odd desire to flex. Everyone else isnt forced to use this feature and can play it however they want to, regardless of the option being there.

JP

One thing I thought of during that discussion was the Monster Hunter series. People generally seem fine with Monster Hunter Stories as a spin off despite the different art style from the core games. Maybe it's just more palatable when the mainline games are being released in quicker succession than what we've had with the Horizon series.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

MH Story does have a very stylized art style compared to the main entries but Story's art style looks really good. Hunters Gathering looks like in comes on after Super Kitties. Disney Junior ass art direction

JP

I can understand that. I thought the robots and world looked good given the art direction change. It kinda reminded me of Kena Bridge of Spirits. I think they should have went with a character creator instead of specific hunters though.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

100% correct. The game would have been significantly better received with a character creator

Magnanimous Colin

Anyone else not seeing the episode come up on their podcast feed?

Susan B. Anthony Bourdain

Nioh 3 is crazy good. The systems are too opaque and it has too many technical issues to be GOTY, but the way the open world feeds into customizing player expression is incredibly well done.

Shadi Haddad

The character design discussion was straight catharsis

PairOfShuse

I’m really loving everyone talking about character designs. Ever since Marvel Rivals, the conversation has finally flipped again. I’ve gotten a lot of crap even in this community over this kind of talk. I agree with the one person who wrote in that said not everyone needs to be like Eve (though she is a great character) but character designs has been made extremely ugly, pandery to a crowd that doesn’t buy games. It’s mainly just western studios too. It’s uniquely a problem where “woke” ideology took hold. But it’s nice to see Brad and Locke talk like this. It is a little sad though Locke had to say it’s nice to finally be able to talk in the open like this. Always say what ya think. I don’t expect Matty to get in the talk on it and it made it even funnier when he did.

That was me. I'm probably one of a handful of people that legitimately loves Horizon. I have no problem with Sony pursuing a live-service game in the Horizon universe, and I don't even have a problem with the art style. I do, 100% take umbrage with the character designs. The game is getting dunked on in large part because of it and it's not with out merit. They're terrible, like Concord levels bad. Lastly, I'm glad people are pushing back. The pendulum has swung way, way too far and people are sick of it. Not every character needs to be like Eve, but they sure as hell can't look like whatever Guerrilla is trotting out.

Tim Baker

Based angry Brad

PairOfShuse

I agree with you pretty much 100 percent. I like the first Horizon a lot. I haven’t played Forbidden West yet though. There is a difference between even the looks of that and Zero Dawn. Sony just has been really bad with it lately. But I agree, not everyone needs to look like Eve. It’s just so weird because ever since like late PS3 and PS4 is when this stuff started. Mostly PS4 era. Before that there were all types of characters but not the, for a lack of a better term, “woke”, kind. I’m still of the opinion that the people who started this activist stuff in character design and writing mostly don’t even buy the games.

KB

I definitely recommend Forbidden West. In terms of gameplay I think it's leagues better than Zero Dawn and I think the world they've built is great. It's a big reason why I love the games so much is the gameplay Guerrilla has built. Also Decima is a beast. What pissed me off is the Game Director saying that the game is cannon, but the roster of characters look nothing like any character you've come across in any of the base games. Guerrilla did say they want to bring people in early so they can respond to feedback. I'm hoping the backlash is loud and they get the message and redesign those characters because they are not it. The days of getting standing ovation for terrible characters are over over.

PairOfShuse

Oh yeah I definitely will get to Forbidden West. Just waiting for the right time for a big open world game. Got the platinum back in the day on Zero Dawn. Yeah that’s highly irritating. Sounds like it anyways. It’s dumb when they do that to series.

Matthew Cooper

It's a tough call between RE 2 remake and RE 4 remake. I guess I lean toward RE 2 because it's more true to survival horror. I don't think RE 3 remake is bad, but it's by far the weakest. Jill is great and exploring the city is cool; but Nemesis isn't utilized that well. It's also by far too short for a full priced game. RE 3 feels like it could have been a $20 expansion to RE 2.

Hippopotamus Anonymous

People that keep recommending Lockmort battle shounens are doing him a massive disservice. Please watch one of Satoshi Kon's films. I'd recommend Millenium Actress or Paprika for an uninitiated viewer. These movies aren't just yelling to the extreme, I promise.

Cruelty-free Pleatherface with electric chainsaw

The thing I’m wondering is if Guerrilla will take the criticism seriously and delay to rework the character designs and art style or if they will be arrogant and barrel ahead undeterred.

Cameron Sturre

As someone with no experience with the original RE2 and RE4, RE2 remake did nothing for me. It was fine. But I loved RE4, it was so much fun.

Daddy T

Thank you boys for having an honest discussion about Horizons blatantly uninspired art style and character designs. Forbidden West is in the top 5 most impressive games in terms of graphical fidelity, and now there’s this, come on dawg, what a waste of talent. Also that peg-legged fat chick character is fucking horrific can we all be honest about it.

KB

The Game Director said they wanted people to test the game early to illicit feedback. Much like you I'm very curious if they conveniently walk that back or if they actually take the criticism to heart. The whole roster needs to be redone. I’m honestly at a loss for words at this point when it comes to the people leading these character art teams. I truly don’t get what they don’t get anymore. The disconnect feels massive, and it’s hard to understand how this keeps happening. If they barrel ahead undeterred then this game is DoA. There might be a grand total of 5 people on the planet who actually think the character designs are great.

KB

It’s the only way we can expect change to happen — we have to be honest about it. The character art lead saw that character design of the mega obese peg-legged chick with neon pink hair and was like, “YEAH! The Horizon community is going to love this!” And that’s the disconnect I can’t wrap my head around. Embarrassing.

Casey Cieslikowski

Even Colin is getting annoying with the can’t criticize shit anymore. I took one look at the art design in the new Horizons game and said nope.

Daddy T

I can’t quote Colin verbatim on last weeks Sacred but he was saying that big gal was fun and wacky or some shit along those lines, I couldn’t believe my ears man, I miss when he was more gun-ho about all this shit.

Pianopower

Is not that important of a game

KB

I get what he was saying in spirit — the bigger character is obviously meant to fill that tank role. And I’m not against big, wacky characters at all. But they still have to be legitimately cool. You can make exaggerated archetypes work — look at Bo’ Rai Cho from Mortal Kombat, Bob from Tekken, Roadhog from Overwatch, or Thor from God of War. It’s not about size — it’s about execution. I will say this, though: I’m glad Dustin and Chris have noticed it and are pushing back on the podcast. They seem to understand that there’s a real sense of frustration building. Dustin even mentioned it on that same episode.

Big Devin Energy

Seems that way to most but I couldn’t disagree more. If you’re invested in the lore of Spencer mansion and Umbrella corp this game is seminal when it comes to the lore of the RE universe

Gooch Gobbler

I guess I'm the only one who wants to play as fat characters and stuff like that. I loved playing as Dave in Dave the Diver for example. It's simply for variety though, not representation. I just get a bit tired of the soldier or model/goddess asian/white stereotypes. I just wanna play as something different man. I'm not in peak physical condition but wouldn't call myself fat before someone hurls that my way lol

The Incredible Shulk

I must be the only person who actually prefers RE 3 Remake compared to RE 2 Remake. I dont play these games for the story (they are all horrible), and RE was a shorter/tighter, more action focused game with less puzzles (I hate the RE puzzles). I simply had more fun with it

The Corn Rocket

The Horizon discussion has grown exhausting. I looked at the art work for Monster Hunter Stories 3 and it looks like every other anime game ever but apparently that is ok?

Ryan Harvey

I really like Brad and appreciate his intent to speak freely about designs he doesn’t like. But the harshness of the words ‘fat bitch’ kinda feels like too much to me. But IDK. I get it but dunno

Big Devin Energy

What a stupid response to a well articulated one. Get bent.

Daddy T

Let king go off

DIS-Bee

"that's why there's no ugly movie stars" so true lock haha

NeO JD

Dave looks more interesting than the woman in the new Horizon

Walk Forward Cutscene

It’s better than Colin coping acting like there wasn’t an obvious body positivity motivation behind the design

Ken Van Allen

I could not agree more with Brad about the character designs

Glen Yelenovic

Lies Of P is amazing. It’s not that hard even on normal mode… except for that fucking clown

Glen Yelenovic

Too bad Lock was spoiled on the Lies Of P ending when Walt Disney comes out of his freezer

Kojima Made Me Gay

Ima play as that fat bitch from horizon. That’s some fat princess shit. Hot as hell

FlynnTaggartGuy

This bothers me about anime talk in general, as someone who hates that stuff too. There is so much good shit out there! Especially in movies or back in the day.

Hippopotamus Anonymous

Yeah, I actually still do like battle shounen, but I was also in elementary school when Toonami first started airing and Dragon Ball began to gain serious popularity in the US. I feel like a lot of anime fans forget that not everyone grew up with that stuff and many are going to have a hard time getting into shows made with 12 year old boys as the target demographic as adults. It's a real shame that shounen takes up such an inordinate amount of oxygen, there's so much more out there that seems to hardly be discussed.
