Sony has accomplished a truly rare feat in this contentious era by providing players with a widely-lauded hour-plus State of Play presentation. At the top of the heap of announcements for many are a duo of God of War-related unveilings -- the long-rumored 2.5D Metroidvania game and an early-in-development ground-up remake of the original PS2 and PS3 trilogy -- with the former project stealth released at the time of its reveal. That's right: You can buy it right now! 29 other games were showcased, revealed, and otherwise shown off during the proceedings as well, like a new Castlevania called Belmont's Curse, a sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits called Scars of Kosmora, a AAA John Wick project, stealth title Yakoh: Shinobi Ops, the second volume of Konami's Metal Gear Collection, and much, much more. Plus, fresh looks at Saros, Resident Evil: Requiem, Marathon, Mina the Hollower, Beast of Reincarnation, Marvel Tokon, Control Resonant, Pragmata, 4LOOP, and so on. Other news rounds things out this week -- like steep layoffs at Highguard studio Wildlight and casting details for 2027' Helldivers film -- before we move onto listener inquiries. Who are some of our favorite black characters in gaming history? Why exactly doesn't Colin care about sports games anymore? Should Sony more heavily pursue Astro Bot spinoffs? Did the all-Spanish Super Bowl Halftime Show send any of us into an unspeakable rage?

I’m glad others enjoyed the State of Play. For me personally, the games look great, just nothing I want to play except for Kena. The surprise drop of Kena has me excited to revisit and beat the game just before the sequel like I did with Death Stranding 1&2. I’m glad to see others excited. What I don’t understand is that if you saw just about nothing you want to play from it, why people act like you aren’t a gamer. I play roughly 40-50 hours a week and I buy more than most do. I just happen to enjoy more narrative non combat exploration games than most other genres. Anyways, most of the big games this year look great, just nothing for me. I do have Coffee Talk Tokyo preordered, CAIRN was an exceptional indie game, Wolverine I’m excited for, and I’m sure there will be lots of cool indies and other announcements from third party that will keep me busy. All in all great for everyone!

I personally thought the SoP was an A+. Was pleased when Chris had the same opinion. This was a great showing.

Daddy T

God damn dawg how’d you fit in all those hours? Lol

I retired two years ago. Everything is paid for so I just game and watch movies everyday.

A Single Charcoal Briquette

Colin you’ve gotta get Ed on the show he’s great, super meat boy is one of his hits too

Haru Discourse

Easily the best state of play yet in my opinion. Almost everything they showed was appealing to me!

Ryan

Colin should do an episode on how that whole ai-2027 website he loves is like dead wrong lol Look I don’t think AI is going away but if you haven’t realized by now it’s as much a big grift as it is a new novel technology you’re gonna keep getting one shot by these extremist AI takes for years.

Risen

The state of play format isn’t going to cause a long term problem. See: Nintendo direct

"Something big is happening in AI — and most people will be blindsided" -Fortune, February 11, 2026. That article is from 2 days ago. You might be right on AI 2027, but its going to change our lives in unforeseen and drastic ways. I guess we will have to just see. But it’s not a 'grift'. Grift and peruse... man. I don't think these mean what you think they mean. I’m SGT Doakes’ you Chris, with ‘peruse.’ *I know Language changes over time, but I will die on the hill of 'peruse' if not, whats next? "Irregardless"? A"mute point?" (I heard this in real life)

Former certified first assist here: What you guys are describing about the appendix is known as a “prophylactic appendectomy“. I’ve seen it very commonly used when we go back for surgery because the appendix appears infected and “hot”, but when you get in there, it’s not actually inflamed. At this point, there is a conscious decision to be made: take the appendix, though not infected, (and thus guarantee this person will never contract appendicitis,) or leave it be. Ultimately this comes down to a question of informed consent, did the doctor speak with the patient before surgery and clarify, “we’re just gonna take your appendix whether it’s infected or not?” if not, taking the appendix is a pretty stark violation of consent laws, that said I have certainly seen it happen with older and highly experienced surgeons (who I think believe in their ability to convince the patient after the fact that it was the right call.) New TLDR; Yes, prophylactic appendectomies absolutely can and do happen.

I was flabbergasted by how generic and boring the God of War 2D game looks. If this didn’t have “God of War” attached to the title nobody would give this game a 2nd look. I was hoping for something more stylized and kinetic like Prince of Persia Lost Crown or Silksong.

Dustin, sucking a shitload of snot out of your baby’s nose is incredibly satisfying

In defense of For Loop and the name—which is entirely lost on CCD here—it’s meant to be a nod to coding language. A “for loop” is a logic pattern that allows for code to be repeated in a loop, named for its use of the word “for()” to label its use in code. I don’t disagree it’s a confusing name, but just figured many game developers and people familiar with code would get this immediately. In that sense, I’ve always thought it was a really clever name.

Santa Monica is definitely going to get rid of the edgelord stuff from the GoW trilogy, but they'll have to keep the over-the-top sex and violence in at least some form. The Norse GoW games don't work without the context of Kratos walking away from his sadistic and carnal appetites. That's the whole point.

Steven

Yeah, "for loop" is ingrained in my lexicon as a developer, but I can totally see how it could sound like complete nonsense to non-devs.

Supes

Colin you should 1000% get Edmund McMillen on, I don't think he'd be put off by you reaching out to him now (in fact I can basically guarantee if you said "I forgot and now I feel like a dickhead asking you to come on" he'd laugh about it). Super down-to-earth guy, and he got his start in the Newgrounds/Flash game era of the internet so he's not exactly easy offended. Dude is super cool

Cloud

"I don't even wanna give any indication who it was" immediately followed by "I went to high school with him" is objectively hilarious

Hey, colin partnership is a broad term. Partnerships come in many different forms. Marriage is a form of partnership but isn't the only form Also kid rock as a human is deplorable. Turning point usa halftime show drew five million views, not remotely a top youtube stream of all time, which is not surprising coming from a party that lies habitually

Publix Chicken tender sub

Man sacred symbols talking about Bad bunny was never in my bingo card 😂 Bad bunny bébé! ❤️🇵🇷 great show guys 🔥

BigDumbStupidIdiot

I feel nothing for the remake trilogy until I see gameplay. I have a gut feeling it's going to be a cross-gen PS5/PS6 game

Supes

yeah but "partner" sounds gay

Guess all lawfirms are gay lmao

The Sengoku Basara franchise by Capcom can be considered a musou game

Dustin - as a father of two, you’re 100% going to suck those boogers. Congrats to you and Holly

Nick

I’m surprised it didn’t at least ring a bell to any of them. Colin has mentioned playing with code before and Chris has said he has experience with game engines.

Last Night We Let the Liquor Talk

Haha Dustin you will 100% suck those boogers! I thought the same thing. The bulbs are no good. The electric booger suckers are weak. The Nose Frida is the best tool out there. And when your baby is struggling to breathe and you’ve tried the alternatives I mentioned that don’t work, You’ll be sucking those boogers. 😂

When women use 'partner' they are always referring to a man, because the type of woman that would use the word 'partner' is the type that would enthusiastically refer to their 'wife' if they were married to a woman. Pro tip, for you Pro Gamers.

Philip Dunphy

Kena 1 is great. The vibes were peak. It’s their first game. Can’t wait for the sequel.

Daddy T

Just because some people use it in a particular way that doesn't take away from the actual meaning of the word. Kind of like how woke has been completely changed from the original meaning. But that doesn't mean that the original meaning for the word doesn't apply in specific circumstance. Last I checked, there were multiple meanings and usages for the word partner. Specifically, when talking about a significant other, or somebody who you live with or do business with. Context matters

hopscotchington

I'll try my best to answer these: -It does, you can degrade words and language (i.e. puruse. or Partner instead of husband/wife). -The term "woke" as used for the past decade hasn't changed. In fact it's always meant the same thing. -Of course there's multiple meanings, but only recently in the parlance you prescribe. It is specific to a worldview that you share. See above post "When women..." -That is not what 'specifically' means. A significant other or someone you do business with is not specific... C'mon man. Sure. I could be married to a gal or entering a business contract for a waffle stand. What in the fuck is the point of muddling language this way? It's amazing how much leftist discourse is just them pretending not to understand things, thus making discourse impossible. 'Partner' used in this way, is intended to be an inclusive stand in for husband/wife/bf/gf. It does not work because the people who use language this way would let you know if they were married to someone of the same sex anyways, and more enthusiastically. So it can only be used by those of a political persuasion to signal to others in the same group that they are "friendly" to their cause. tldr: 'This all sounds very gay" -Tony Soprano

Give my best to Sean Mason. One of the few true gentlemen left. Godspeed.

If... A gay person sleeps for 12 hours. Did they sleep for 12 hours straight? Or... 12 hours gay?

My theory on why it’s not common knowledge that Puerto Rico is part of the United States is that a lot of schools don’t really spend much time on the late 1800s and early 1900s ,especially the period when the U.S. acquired territories outside the continental states. That era can be uncomfortable because it brings up questions about imperialism, so it often gets glossed over. Alaska and Hawaii eventually became states, so their status feels straightforward to most people. But territories like Puerto Rico are more complicated, and I think that complexity gets lost in basic U.S. history education. As a Puerto Rican living on the mainland, it can sometimes feel like you’re walking on eggshells. When you say you’re from Puerto Rico, the conversation can quickly turn awkward because people genuinely don’t understand the political relationship. Most of the time it’s not malicious, it’s just a lack of exposure but it can affect how easily connections or friendships form when you constantly have to explain your identity.

Pulling the team to focus on Hunters Gathering dismays me to no end. I’m a Colin in my life with my love for Horizon. 8 fuckin years in between ?? UGHHHHHHHHHHHH

Breaking Bot’s Weld Jr played by Robot John MIDI

It’s very funny that Chris was the one to go off on “partner” because he has absolutely used partner instead of girlfriend on Snark Tank. I guess it’s true that podcasters don’t remember what they say. lol

Ryan

My whole point is like that article you’re referencing from this last week is the same thing 2027/every AI salesman has been saying since 2022 and we haven’t seen anything close to it. I mean the most prolific examples of what ‘AI can do for us’ is literal slop video content and a suped up Google search. The entire openAI bubble is self propagated and ‘financed’ by other companies in a big circle.

Sucking Duck for Quack

The egg had to have come before the chicken, no? Wasn’t the chicken as we know today hatched? If the chicken came before the egg, then the chicken wasn’t hatched. It was born live, like mammals. Am I confused???

Big titty drinker

Do you guys still respect metacritic. Haven’t paid attention to to it in years but got curious to see where a lot of my favorite games landed. Surprisingly found most of my fave games in the 75 to 90 range. But most of the high 90 stuff I found overrated or boring /uninteresting

DeliveryBoy.357

Saga Anderson was a fantastic original character from Alan Wake II who is black

Jason Rose

It blows me away anyone could think Son of Sparta looks better than the latest Prince of Persia, let alone look good period. I grew up with Pixel Art, love it, this game looks like shit and they’re charging $40 for it? I don’t get it, we already had a prequel God of War on the PSP as well guys.

Jason Rose

Whenever someone says partner you either think they’re gay or get banged with a strap on

The Incredible Shulk

Yeah, it reminds me of something you would have seen on the Amiga back in the day. Something ia just offputting about the pixel art of it

The Incredible Shulk

Surprised Chris didn't mention Chase from Dispatch as a great black character. He was such a great part of that game

Del Griffith

To be fair, based on this thoughtful post, you don’t seem like the kind of person being made fun of as not being as gamer. You don’t strike me as the type who goes online screaming “where are the games?!” That’s more where that vitriol is directed

ChaosZwei+5

Devs don't know how to make pixel art for the most part minish cap back from the gba days wipes just about any modern attempt at pixel art

Jason Rose

I don’t know, they already have a top on the Gorgon in the new Son of Sparta game so that’s not exactly promising they’ll stick to the script either the Greek trilogy remakes

Thank you for your donation!

Warframe struggled at first and now is one of the best f2p games out there. It’s the golden standard imo. Sony fucked up by letting Tencent buy Digital Extremes. DE would’ve taken Sony to that golden goose f2p game. Greatest fumble in Sony history imo, and it never comes up in the podcast.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, it does not make a noise. Sound is vibrations that a creature’s ears turn to sound. Without anyone around with ears go turn the vibrations to sound, it does not make a noise 🤓

Absolutely everybody needs to check out Stories Untold to see the special sauce that Screen Burn (formerly No Code) have and how it could make for a very special Silent Hill.

Pragmata is a new IP from Capcom (how often do we get those?), they just released a demo which plays absolutely great, in the trailer we've seen for the first time that it has much more to offer than just your generic sci-fi space station aesthetic and we're just gonna skip past it because Colin says it's not for me? No takes from Chris or Dustin? Okay then

Walk Forward Cutscene

Colin is very interested in Pragmata but doesn’t like demos or discussing trailers for games that he’s already interested in. Are you new here?

Gooch Gobbler

That sounds really frustrating. And now we are going to talk about this stuff in schools less cause how dare the united states have anything negative in our history

Gooch Gobbler

I would love this. Also wondering how he feels developing games in Asheville NC which I think is where he lives? I just moved here

Gooch Gobbler

I know what it means and I still think it's a bad name lol Just keep numbers out unless it's a sequel and Loop is just a weird word, unless it is just Loop or Looper (still weird), get that shit outta the name

rmcquade19

No Deathloop? Loop Hero? Video games are built on loops I think it makes sense!

Gooch Gobbler

Please get Ed on! I have so many hours in his games and there is so much to ask him about building his games into an entire brand and I would love to know how making games in Asheville is (if he still lives here)

PuppiesOnParade

With the death spiral of Highguard before us, it's time for the GaaS killer to rise up. Bring back Fracture! P.S. Tencent owns Geoff...

Bro, I’m so tired of Sony for getting rid of blueprint. What an absolute waste.
