It's me, Colin. Please welcome Summon Sign and Punching Up co-host Brad Ellis and PlayStation expert RealRadec back to Sacred+. Today, we convene to discuss the stealth-released God of War Metroidvania that dropped barely a week ago at the time of publish, Sons of Sparta. As the 10th overall God of War game and the very first externally-developed title since Ready at Dawn delivered Ghost of Sparta on PSP in 2010, Sons of Sparta was long-in-development, and we've known about it in some form since early last year, even if it continuously went unannounced. But upon its surprise launch during the most recent State of Play, we had Mega Cat Studios' 2.5D action romp dropped directly into our laps. Welp, the three of us have beaten it, and naturally, there's a lot to discuss. Did we like it? Perhaps we even loved it? Are people being too harsh on it, or just harsh enough? Let's get into it on the other side of the play button.

Damn fast turn around. I’m like 13 hours in and mostly through the main story but not even halfway through getting any of the side stuff done. This game is meaty.

Henry3K

whoa its cool seeing radic back so soon!

WhiskeyShoots

I understand Colin not trusting history, but what does that have to do with this fantasy videogame? Lol

Jacob Lesperance

23 hrs in and 53% completion. The more I play, the better im finding it gets. Started at 7, but I think I might be placing this at maybe an 8 by the time I'm done.

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

Colin is the king of thinking 6’s are better than they are. In the last five years has there been a single game that was widely recognized as mediocre that he didn’t think was “being treated unfairly” or “much better than people are giving it credit for”, or “people are being too harsh on it”.

Dante B

In this very episode he calls it mediocre many times and says it “wouldn’t even make a list of the top 25 Metroidvania games” what are you looking for? You can find something mediocre while also recognizing it may be unfairly maligned in some ways.

Meatball

Agree with this. Just beat the 4th boss and it's really starting to click for me!

Daddy T

Yes, more Radec, this guy knows his stuff!

Deemac

People aren't happy unless they trash this game as if it's worse than Gollum. It's far from the best thing ever, but it's a decent 7/10 imo Seems like there's no nuance with how gamers talk about these things anymore - a game's either a GOTY contender or a huge pile of shit

Deemac

Definitely gets better the more you go. Made me laugh when the first write in on Sacred this week was this passionate criticism from someone shitting on everything about the game, before they ended by saying they'd played about 2 hours 🙄

YP-Berserk

Colin has baffling awfully taste in that he is very consistent and true to himself. Colin has immense value in games discussion on every level except the actual game recommendations.

Jacob Lesperance

Just finished last night. The last half boss fights are a huge step up. This is a very competent, good Matroidvania. It ain't gonna set the world on fire but, it was a good game overall

My dog started barking and snarling at the TV when I entered the room with all the pigs in the foreground

Anthony Palerino

On the streams. The talking and coverage streams are so much more entertaining.

I have no clue how you can think the recent crop of 2.5D games look cheap while simultaneously calling Sons of Sparta, beautiful. It’s subjective, but if I load up the latest Prince of Persia, or Shinobi Art of Vengeance, we’re going to fight if you claim they’re not better looking games. Ultimately, I just don’t know why this game exists in relation to God of War. What does it do to serve the overall narrative and direction the franchise is pushing? Unless a new game references what it’s doing lore wise, it has no reason. No one was clamouring to learn about kid Kratos at all and we already had a prequel-ish on PSP. What would have made way more sense narratively is if they covered the journey from Greek mythology to arriving to begin his life in the Norse. This is a ridiculous omission in the God of War transition that still hasn’t been remotely covered. A comic touched on it, vaguely and a couple lines in 2018’s game referenced. Still a mystery.

Jason Rose

Ya I’m not sure where that was headed. Colin will jive with the bearing straight land bridge 12000 years ago, but a mythology from 2000 years ago is a step too far? Norse is great as well, but Greek is probably the most referenced mythology with the most identifiable characters/gods. I didn’t really get that at all

Jason Rose

I will say that if the option is the best looking pixel art game versus the top of 2.5D I’m taking the best pixel art every day. Sadly, those just don’t really exist anymore and Sons of Sparta is not close to that.

Glen Yelenovic

Colin apologizing for not liking Greek Mythology… I don’t think Homer was offended to begin with

I just got the Platinum yesterday. I can't believe that there was this belt basically from the beginning of the game (if you had 7500 orbs to spare) that would highlight the walls that we can interact. I only spent those 7500 orbs to open that barrier when I was almost done. I spent hours looking for those hidden cats and chests kneeling down near every wall.

NecrumOddBoy

Same. Platinum this game. It’s pretty good but so much is poorly explained that I didn’t unlock basically anything until the last 15% of the story. Then I crushed out the remaining part. Good title but execution was absolutely trash.

I've only played like 30 minutes of this game so far. I know people look at this game as a metroidvania type and that's the lens in which influences every opinion of every choice made by the developers but I instantly understood very early on that it is more of a linear game with heavy narrative with a very light flavoring of a metroidvania style game. It's great that they got T.C. Carson to voice Kratos. Looking forward to the trilogy remake, hopefully we get one game at a time so we don't have to wait for them to remake 3 games.

crosstriangleOsquare

Yeah, Colin went wayyy to hard on calling it, comparing it and trying to see it through the lens of a metroidvania above all else. Sony called it an action platformer.
