After over a year of silence, Starfield's newest wave of content is here. The Dukes got to see things running behind the scenes and get a feel for Bethesda's new vision for the sci-fi RPG. It appears they're gearing up for more incremental updates rather than swinging in with a massive expansion pack each year. Between the Free Lanes update, Terran Armada, and the PlayStation 5 version, there's much for us to go over. Perhaps more of the hot button topic is what is transpiring within AI. This time, it arrives in the form of DLSS 5 and to say there was backlash would be an understatement. The sizzle reel that showed off this new technology on the likes of Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil Requiem, and the like was openly mocked, reaching beyond the games industry. In fairness, some are hopeful that this technology could lead to better looking, cheaper games. Can it? Well, pull up a chair, friend. We have much to discuss.Timestamps:0:00:00 - Intro

I said that DLSS was "optional" until it was heavily relied upon to get today's game performant at standard settings. Now, we can apply that thinking to the visual side of things. - Matty

I've been very on the fence about AI but DLSS5 is indeed an inflection point for me. It looks like total ass and clearly overwrites artist intent. I played RE9. I know that Grace looks how she does for very specific reasons and that this AI porn look completely throws all of those reasons out the window. There's literally zero reason to believe the actual creative teams behind that game signed off on this. I also disagree with those (including Cog) saying that the environments look good. The environments are just totally lit by this (regardless of actual realism with light sources) so as to remove all shadows while allowing you to clearly see every detail already there. To be fair to Cog, Starfield is the one game in the demo I've seen relative positivity towards, but that's probably because the game looked like ass in the first place. As to Cog's quote about developers signing off on this, we now know from Insider Gaming that the actual rank and file developers and artists on the Capcom and Ubisoft teams learned about this when we all did. With that in mind, along with the totally horrible results observed in this big reveal, why in the world should we believe that in the future this would be used carefully and tastefully with full developer control to good results?

Your Boi Nicky V

Anyone know what that haters comment was referencing? Who's been beefing the Dukes?

i_wish_you_wood

No idea but I bet they’d never say it to Cog’s face lol

Mog

I find it incredibly hard to believe the art team and designers of Grace had the intention to make her look like that in the RE Requiem DLSS5 footage. I know the rumor is that they did...but it's just hard to accept. The look doesn't fit her character at all, especially for that scene in the game.

Michael

🍅 🍅 🍅 For Cog’s whack ass Starfield DLSS5 takes. Those faces looked like complete ass and I can’t believe he actually thought it looked even slightly good.

Daddy T

Starfield is the one game that DLSS5 actually makes it look better imo, the game looks fucking ass to begin with, the difference between that and Requiem is Requiem looks phenomenal on it’s own.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

I feel like Cog is the only person being honest about the DLSS5 discussion. The reason people are upset is the potential job loss this could entail. To us hardcore gamer crowd, yes the 2 second snippets and images they showed looked off especially the animations. But to the average person they probably think it looks amazing. So can we please realign this discussion by the pundits. It's about the hatred of AI and not the quality of DLSS5. Lets not gaslight the audience.

Kaleb

If Microsoft drops Ilo Milo and Fable 2 on pc i’ll buy day 1

Matthew Cooper

What DLSS 5 does to Grace's face is criminal... Instead of an introverted young woman on the way to revisit her mother's murder site, she looks overconfident and on the way to a hot date. This is the type of thing that makes me think it won't be long before I just nope out of modern video games.

BamAHamYum

Cog is right about Starfield. I think the Grace example looks horrific, but imo the Starfield screenshots looked like a genuine improvement.

Plumber Boy Mustache Man

Resident evil didn't sell more on PC. Cog where did you hear that Circana and dring saying RE9 sold most in US and Europe on ps5. Only Alinea is saying the opposite but we all know how suspect their numbers are.

Big Devin Energy

Maximum Carnage is dope. I’m totally down to grab this collection and replay this SNES classic.

Robbie Agnew

Lol Starfield is still getting DLC?! No one plays it anymore. What a waste of resources.

Pretty vital additional DLSS5 context in this thread/video: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1rya1bg/daniel_owen_nvidia_answers_my_dlss_5_questions/ Nvidia rep finally confirmed what we all thought: the AI model only reads a frame as a 2D image with motion vectors, with no other information as an input, then uses its LLM to do an AI “enhance” on the image and paint over the original frame in real time. Beyond color grading and dialing up or down intensity, there’s also no way for developers to interact with the AI model to actually tell it their intent (like telling it Grace shouldn’t have makeup). Beyond this revealing how Nvidia has been intentionally trying to make us think that’s NOT what it’s doing, I can confidently say there is no fucking way that any actual artists would be pleased with a LLM interpreting their hard work and painting over it without even a way to guide it. I co-sign Marty’s feelings about Todd Howard’s part in this and with this additional information can’t even believe wtf he was thinking. Maybe it’s time for the man to think about retiring, ffs…

Matty, Pokémon TCG isn't down at all! My collection value is up 20 grand in one month ($123k total) with me not adding anything to it. Pokémon is actually on another climb, especially older stuff and the 151 set now that it's out of print. Newest set has a Mega Gengar selling for $1k raw. 30th anniversary cards start today with the starter packs and that's going to make things even crazier for a bit.

Zachary Abell

I’m a huge Pokemon fan, but GameFreak deserves the smoke 🤣 I know Marty mentioned he used to be into the cards and grading, but not sure why he stopped. I love the TCG and am a huge grader myself.

Captain Falcon

Bethesda needs to move on from Starfield already ffs

Zachary Abell

Also Matty, DLSS 5 is 100% going to be an optional thing for an obvious reason.. support. The current and next gen Xbox/PlayStation are confirmed to be AMD machines. Xbox will have FSR 4+ and PS6 will have PSSR, which is based off the work as FSR. Switch 2 uses a modified DLSS 2 and DLSS 5 is RTX 50 series exclusive. Not to mention, FYI, you can set whatever DLSS model you want to use in the Nvidia app. I can run DLSS 2 - 4.5 on my RTX 5080 with a click. Don't want to use DLSS 5? Then don't, because it's absolutely going to be an optional feature.

NeO JD

I’ll jump back in to play it. Just hope it’s not a letdown like the last one.

NeO JD

Series consoles are already barely in stores, so no doubt they’ll be gone by next year. I don’t even think the Helix will be in most stores. As for back compat, they’ll sell you a disc drive if you want it. I agree with Cog that Starfield was the only one in that preview that actually looked better with that DLSS on. That alone made me not rule it out entirely. #DDDLSS

Cruelty-free Pleatherface with electric chainsaw

To me, “artist’s intent” is cope. If it’s what you claim you were going for, prove it. The struggle matters. The core of all the AI stuff that I detest is simply laziness.

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

I still don't get all the DLSS hate. The whole oh no be still my heart it's the art is an emotional-based argument. Have you seen all the games out there nowadays. Id hardly call most of them art depicting the human struggle. Hell, pokeman whatever was gushed over. You throw a party for pokemon in it. Not deep art. Graphic artists nowadays use a wide variety of tools to aid their work. DLSS is another tool to add. Honestly, this may allow people who don't have any artistic ability to produce decent looking games. I don't get it. The AI doom crowd is the meme of the old Simpsons character yelling at a moving cloud. It's happening. It will be good in some areas and bad in others. The market will decide what stays and goes. Great episode. Great discussion. Still the best money I spend for content per month. #DDDLSS

Im sorry but Matty didnt give any actual good reason on DLSS as to why it is actually bad. Its all just "Well this is the first steps of something worse". This along with "They just want to have AI finish the game for you" comes off as sky is falling and not actual reasonable criticism. If people who buy a game let a computer finish the game for them, who gives a shit? Thats their choice to waste money on something they then didnt even play. Historically we never see devs and publishers trying to get you through a game faster, its more often they drag out the experience and gives you stuff to keep you on their game.

Sucking Duck for Quack

Totally agree with Matty on DLSS5. Regardless if the faces in Starfield look “better” to you, it’s generative AI. People have been shitting on gen AI for quite some time for a reason. If the question is “developer intent”, what difference does it make when it’s gen AI? When the weird ass fuckwads on Twitter post the most soulless AI art and claim they’re artists, they get roasted endlessly. This also applies to devs who use it too. It makes them replaceable and makes them have literally 0 value at the studio if they’re just copying and pasting into DLSS5. I’d rather look at the lower fidelity models in Starfield than the yassified gen AI slop of DLSS5 simply because a person designed it. Same reason I see a realistic painting/drawing of something and I’m blown away by it: because a person with real talent worked their ass off for months to make it happen. They didn’t write a fucking prompt and claim they’re the second coming of Michelangelo. GTFOH

Robbie (DatLie)

The whole pc thing, bad for me. If PlayStation ever stopped making consoles, I’m done. I’d probably just play my old consoles and never buy new again. I know I don’t matter, but I do spend 3-5000 a year on games and accessories for my PlayStation. I’ve tried a pc and steam and just hate it. Doesn’t feel comfortable to play, and i retired at 33 from a desk job and it just gives me bad memories. I been lately just stock piling ps3, 4, and 5 games physically in preparation for one day this being a sad reality. On another note, fantastic episode and I don’t get to hear from you guys often. I’m a PlayStation guy so I don’t listen unless it’s some neat topics. I’m ready for starfield.
