The drama around DLSS 5 has overtaken the gaming industry during the last week. Nvidia's image upscaling tech has been present in our space for years, but its newest iteration (set for a proper fall release) has many people scratching their heads. Have we gone from frame generation to art reinterpretation? Why is this technology being deployed so aggressively, anyway? And how come so many companies were so excited about it until they saw the overwhelmingly negative audience response? Let's delve headfirst into the mystery of the Yassified Grace, and all of the fallout therein. The write-in that said DLSS 5 is “objectively more accurate” and accused people of lying is flat wrong. We now know, thanks to YouTuber Daniel Owen getting direct answers from Nvidia, that the DLSS 5 AI model only uses as data inputs the 2D image and motion vectors from individual frames, makes its own inferences based on its general LLM model, and then paints over each frame with its own image. It does not at all take in information about lighting sources elsewhere in the scene and is therefore NOT more accurate. Furthermore, in Nvidia’s examples, it added things not there like Grace’s makeup and hair on one side of a guy’s head in Starfield. The model also doesn't take in any gameplay information not readily apparent to the LLM. For all the talk of developers being able to tweak it, they can only tweak the color grading and intensity of the model. They can't, for instance, tell it to leave the makeup off of Grace because it's inappropriate to the character and the scene. So no, NOT more accurate. It actually is simply the AI slop filter we all thought it was and can clearly see with our eyes, but Nvidia tried to obfuscate with technobabble. Oscars are still super fun to me. Me and the fam all watch the best picture/actor/actress nominees every year and tune in. It’s a good time. It’s our favorite tradition I highly recommend it if you’re into film Just go in knowing there’s going to be cringe moments, and that the academy will probably pick the wrong winners, and just don’t take it seriously, I think you’ll have a good time.

Portal cloud streaming has been a revelation for me. I've had the same experience as Tim with the Portal. The stability seems to be vastly better - I presume because there are other internet devices fighting for bandwidth against my PS5.

Dustin - portal cloud streaming is great when you have a fast connection (I.e. Business hotel), comparable streaming in home off my Ps5 pro. I wanted to try out death stranding on vacation without having to download it to my console, and it was very nice Chris - play 'tak and the guardians of Gross' (probably on a ps2 emulator) for your SotC fix. It's kinda terrible iirc but it is a platforming/giant boss style game I never hear anyone talk about

I’m definitely in the minority when it comes to taboo topics in video games. I really am indifferent more so leaning in the direction of having them in games and I find it strange how there’s arbitrary lines drawn, specifically in video games. If you look at TV they have an abundant amount of unsavory themes (GoT, Euphoria etc) and it brings a sort of life to the piece of work, like “yea I could actually see that happening”. We’ve transitioned into an era where everyone gets outraged over something “problematic” in games not having the self awareness that it’s just that, a GAME. EDIT: The most recent example (besides SF6) is the Sherry and Leon debacle. It’s like, is it weird? Well yea but at the same time could fighting zombies for 40 years bring two people together like that, despite the taboo aspect? also yea. idk

To the guy who is a dad concerned about playing games. Year 1 is not too bad, they sleep a LOT. The nest few years are rough, fit them in in the evening. Get games you can pause. Multilayer games a no no. Once a decent age play games with them. As they get older tou will get more time. Mine are 16 and 13 now and after 10 years of diminished gaming im now playing RE9 with my 13 year old son and its AWESOME. Also playing Marathon in the evenings. Hang in there

I think its important to note that Digital Foundry focuses a ton on the technical side of things - basically detail/realism maxxing in games is really impressive to them. This stuff objectively makes environments, materials, and lighting look more detailed and real. So I can see why they were excited about it. Some people just dont have an eye for art direction when theyre so focused on pushing realism.

So I’m a tech moron, but ever since last week, all new Last Stand Podcasts will not play/download on my WiFi. If I disconnect the WiFi, it immediately starts playing over cellular. I deleted the Apple Podcasts app and re-installed it. Weirdly, ALL my other podcasts re-loaded instantly, but the Last Stand ones - same issue with the WiFi. And even weirder, the images didn’t load back, but then did when I turned off the WiFi. What the fuck do I need to do? I don’t know of any settings that I’ve messed with. Just started a week or so ago. Thanks for any help out there!

You don't have to download /install am massive ammount of data, no updates needed etc. You simply start the game an play it or try it out. Simple as that. I did it more than often and loved it. the one bad thing which is holding me back ist the delay. it is sometimes too strong. - Colin why i/we have always the feeling you love to annoy only dustin? although in my opinion he has farth most objective and very thoughtful opinions. Hey, that guy asked the DLSS question. There’s a few gaps in your knowledge. DLSS5 will allow for masking along with controls for intensity and colour grading. Yea I’m totally aware of all of that and referred to it in my comment above. According to the answers Daniel Owen got from Nvidia, the masking will allow devs to leave objects in a scene out of the “enhancement” but won’t allow for specific artistic direction of how the model changes the image. That quote you shared about color and motion vectors as inputs are just another way of saying what I said about the only inputs being the 2D image and motion vectors. DLSS 5 then uses gen AI to create a new 2D image according to its model by making inferences based on the 2D image only (and not other data like lighting sources that are out of frame) and that’s the extent to which it is anchored to the 3D content. The “photoreal lighting” claim so far appears to be more based on the idea that it makes the image look like a well-lit photo posted to the internet as determined by the LLM rather than being based on how real world lighting would work in the scene. The AI model also very clearly changes more than just lighting in the final image it puts out, which is easily observable and well documented online. I honestly think Nvidia has been intentionally unclear in their public descriptions of this so as to make it sound as impressive as possible and also confuse people from realizing it’s just a gen AI image filter (albeit one that processes each frame very quickly, which is where the innovation is). All of this is of course what the current version of DLSS 5 is doing according to available information. With the backlash we’ve seen from both gamers and devs, I’m certain there will be huge changes by the time something called “DLSS 5” is released.

I like them as person but the DF crew is not quite as knowledgeable as most people seem to think. They are pretty clueless on many things and had very bad takes in the past. For exemple they said that Starfield 60fps was impossible on current gen and that most current gen only titles would be 30fps and that performance modes were because of cross gen titles. That didn’t make any sense at the time and proved to be completely wrong.
