Every Single Hope You Had Shattered | Sacred Symbols, Episode 404

It's another week of bad news for PlayStation, as PlayStation 5 -- as well as PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal -- are getting another fresh round of global price increases. While every previous gaming generation got progressively cheaper over time, our current gen is becoming substantially more expensive, and things are clearly starting to get to a breaking point. There's much to say. Also, more bad news: Newly-minted first party shooter studio Dark Outlaw Games has been unceremoniously shuttered after only a year. Such a move speaks yet again to the uneven leadership, tastemaking ability, and decision making at the top of PlayStation Studios, and begs the question how much bloodletting we need to see before anyone takes responsibility. If this sort of thing doesn't fall on Hermen Hulst's shoulders (an idea which doesn't really make any sense in and of itself), then who or what is responsible, and when will the poor stewardship of the brand's own games and studios finally cease? Plus: PlayStation cuts down on its years-long mobile gaming investments and initiatives, Sly 4 studio Sanzaru at one time readied a pitch for a Jak & Daxter remake, we nearly got a Breaking Bad game on PSVR, Epic Games lays off 1,000 employees, Pearl Abyss owns its AI mistakes in Crimson Desert, Microsoft Flight Simulator on PS5 gets PSVR2 support, Marathon sells a purported (and somewhat soft) 1.2 million copies, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth courting older gamers on average, is Final Fantasy officially finished with the younger generations? Are platform holders and publishers intentionally underpublishing physical copies of games to drive customers to digital storefronts? Do we believe the incessant rumors that Witcher 3 will get an expansion more than a decade after it first launched? Could Colin be the undisputed typing champion of Last Stand Media? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. According to the LSM sub reddit this price increase is all your fault Colin I hope you're happy.

I personally negotiate and sign every component deal between multinational hardware corporations, and have decided to allocate most of the inventory to AI. I'm sorry. -Colin

I think this price increase is a true nail in the coffin for console gaming. Console gaming has matured now, the industry has peaked and is now even contracting. Switch 2 will end up underselling Switch 1 by a significant margin, Xbox has basically died as far as hardware, and now PS5 will undersell PS4. Gaming that requires dedicated hardware needs to be cheap, it isn't anymore. Comparing back to the golden age of gaming (90s and 00s) and saying gaming is cheaper now or about the same when adjusting for inflation isn't enough. Kids today have so many more options than we had back then, scrolling tick tock, watching youtube, streaming something on netflix; or they can just play cheap or free games through steam on devices they already have. Console gaming has so much to compete with now, it has to be cheaper than ever to maintain its market share. It's not going to attract new young people into the hobby. Console gaming is becoming an old man's game, it's a shrinking market now. Too many big companies putting out too many expensive games with not enough gamers willing and able to play them. If we actually want console gaming to have a real future, prices need to come down. New games need to be $60 at max. Studios need to keep budgets in check and have reasonable size & scope for games. New hardware, like PS6 needs to be as cheap as possible, like $500. Anything more isn't going to work for the mass audience.

TRAGICTACTICS

Well I was going to pick up a PS5 Pro at some point but holy money Batman! I'll wait for a sale now. See if it ever goes on sale at it's original price.

DogMeat

Nah PC is still too expensive in comparison

JoshM

Yeah, like I expect some will move to PC - as has been happening for a bit now - but can’t imagine it being that large of a group because it’s still expensive over there. It’ll depend on PS6/Xbox pricing, but even if Switch 2 sells less than S1 (which I think it will), they’re still probably doing pretty fine

Matthew Cooper

Y'all don't get it, people do not have to play video games. And I'm not saying their will be a massive console video game crash, but the market is shrinking and will continue to shrink. That's not good or sustainable long term. If you think PS6 can launch at $800 with new games costing $70 or more and it's going to sell 100 million plus units, you're nuts. And just because PC is expensive doesn't mean it won't lure people over, because people have PCs for a variety of reasons. People already have phones, tablets, and PCs. A lot will just play games on devices they already have. Or just not game at all and watch Netflix. The casual audience isn't going to drop big bucks for a dedicated gaming box under the TV. If PS6 launches at $800, how many units can it really sell in it's life? 60 million? Maybe 80 at the most? Unless it's able to have drastic price cuts over time, it won't sniff PS4 or PS5. Especially with how good PS5 already is, are casuals really going to care? When I was a kid, we all talked about Super Nintendo and eventually Nintendo 64 and Playstation. Now it seems like the youth are all into Fortnite, Roblox or just Tik Tok. Seems like console gaming is already becoming a luxury hobby for older people with money who grew up doing it. If we want to convert more youth into proper console players, it needs to be cheaper. $800 consoles and $80 games isn't going to do it.

nicholas

Guys I will admit I haven't gamed much of listened much this year due to personal stuff... but feels like yesterday Colin said he hated AI and it's been wild to see the development to now he casually drops "well chatgpt is just wrong" and it's just funny to see this is how most people feel. Lmao.

Limawhiskey

guys, noy gonna lie but everything you said about the console prices can be said about me. I'm now dabbling into pc gaming with a steam deck as my entry point into steam and I might as well. the price of the console is high plus it requires a monthly sub for some online gameplay. Over time it seems like switching to pc would just pay for itself at a point.

Misanthropic_Altruist

Colin referencing Big Country in the episode title reminds me why I feel a kinship to this remarkable man.

AricTheRed

I was so pumped at the end of the episode when Dustin talked about doing another Marathon stream. I’ve been hoping y’all would. The first one was literally my favorite stream you guys have done. It was so cool to watch you guys work together and pull off cool shit, with John Pork “Poncho.”

I understand that maybe in the USA gaming was a cheap hobby, but for someone in Poland, gaming was a luxury. In my school I knew one guy who had a Game Boy Color, and I was the only kid with a Game Boy classic, and just because I had family in Germany. I never seen a NES/SNES console until those became vintage items in a museum. When the PS1 released in Poland, the average salary was around 900 Polish Zloty. The PS1 cost 1090 in 1998, when my parents bought one for me (years later they told me it was a refurbished one, so that is why they could afford it). This means that in 1998, one average take-home salary was not enough to buy a new console. This is why I recently recorded a video, "Gaming's Golden Era is Now", as even with the price hikes, you cannot compare today to what was before for a kid in mid-Europe. Gaming was cheap as f in the last years, and now it's just cheap. Yeah, the Pro is 1k, but it's not like you buy it every year - this machine should keep you busy for the next 3-4 years.

Germanos

You guys are putting too much focus on personalities. Here's the thing: Shu Yoshida would do as "bad" today as Herman Hulst does - in your words. Personalities don't matter... or, better said, it is POINTLESS to compare the outcomes or work of two people who do that work in astronomically different conditions.

Germanos

Now I'll be damned - Dustin's right about Herman, and I agree with him. That's new :D

Germanos

Do you think that first-party management means the same thing in an economy where one hit game funds 3 others and where a hit game keeps the lights on for the studio? Come on, ffs, just think.

Germanos

The problem with just waiting it out, Colin (with what btw. I agree is the thing to do), is that while those companies lose money YoY, they suck money from the ecosystem while doing that and kill others (service games that were fine, studios, etc.) in the process. It is so sad and frustrating.

Germanos

Minecraft Dungeons I would call "My First Diablo" :D I played it with my kids (6 and 8) and we had a blast. They knew the world, while I understood the Diablo mechanics. We liked it so much I bought the Hero Edition with all 6 DLCs. For a good time with kids in couch co-op - worth a shot. PS. It was part of PS+ Essential games.

Germanos

I recently finished DQ11 and although I loved the story (totally surprised it pulled a ff6 on me) I felt like I was playing DQ8. I cannot believe how archaic those games are. That is also why I'm a FF stand - love how the series always kept evolving and changing, while keeping the icons and themes. My theory is that it's Yuji Hori, who keeps the series in the past as a protective old-fashioned grandpa who doesn't like new things 😅.

Joshua

If AI causing price hikes was so obvious to Colin then respectfully... why vote for the guy who all the AI tech billionaires supported? Why vote for the guy whose "anti war" stance could've been seen as a sham from a mile away? Now prices are going to be double fucked by AI and the oil crisis caused by war with Iran

Matt Rowles

Please fix Colin's audio being slightly ahead of the other guys. Becomes really apparent halfway through the show and it's happened a few times rceently. I know saying anything remotely negative these days means you're the worst person on the internet so I'll counteract by saying you guys are my fav 3 people on the planet and you do the best show of all time :)
