The anti-natalism is depressing and it permeates games media. Bothers me. Live your life, your choice, but I don’t get it, particularly with the reasons being given. We’re doomed as a species when people don’t have kids because they can’t give up their video games. The average gamer today is 30+ or so now? Many are parents, yet the people that talk about our hobbies generally don’t have, want and often scoff at kids. Difficult to relate. The selfishness and entitlement of modern western society really underlines much of what’s wrong as a whole. It’s a me problem and it’s my choice to be here, but just had to pause the intro to SS and give voice to this.

Its peoples choice what they do with their lives. I have 4 children and still get time to game. You do have less free time though, thats true. Brad was right when he said its one of those things that seems hard and scary until you do it. Ultimately though it makes everything worthwhile and grounds you in life. Again though, its peoples choice what they do.

Of course and I did say this above. Congrats on your family, I have 2 myself btw. It’s not even personally to the people on this show, even though I’m posting this here, but this sentiment is everywhere lately and it’s sad to see. Jimmy Carr put it succinctly and I’ll just paraphrase it here: living your life without kids is basically a video game with a cheat code on; easy. You think you have skin in the game, but you don’t have skin in the game of life without children.” All the negatives about having kids are quantifiable: less time, less money, less whatever. The reality is that the positives aren’t and yet, they vastly outweigh those negatives. Peace man.

The Returnal platinum is annoying full stop, but it’s greatly oversold. Everyone lacks that collectible in the second biome but there are plenty of guides to just basically run right to it, and if you don’t get the right arrangement you’ll know immediately and just restart. Didn’t take me that long at all. You’ve spent more time debating about going for the plat than it would take to just do it I promise - go for it!!

Colin, as a parent who shares your similar type of anxiety I’m going to advise not having kids. Lol. I have one and he’s amazing, but the amount of worry it adds to your life immense. That indescribable love you have for your child also comes with a heightened sense of constant fear, for their safety and future. I also have no hope for the future of humanity so I’m a bit of a pessimist. Don’t do it. Lol.

Colin you give credit to Housemarque for figuring it out with Returnal. But I will also give credit to Sony for just letting them make single player games. Imagine where we would be today If only the more premiere studios like Guerrilla and Naughty Dog were allowed that luxury.

I wish I could understand when parents take offense when others say they don't want kids. Your life is your life, no one else's. You are allowed to choose not to reproduce. Why does someone else's choice bother you so much?

No one is saying people aren’t allowed to make their own choices. They obviously are. It’s perfectly fine for people, and societies, to make value judgments. For generations, we understood that societies thrive when people willingly make sacrifices to form families and raise the next generation. Now, in an effort to protect everyone’s feelings, we’re expected to pretend it’s just as noble and good to live only for yourself. Just chase your own dopamine, never take on more responsibility than you have to, and end your bloodline so you’ll never have to stop playing PlayStation until 5am. It’s okay to lament this cultural shift and to refuse to pretend that mindset won’t have serious adverse effects that eventually touch all of us.

Just my 2 cents on the kids conversation: I have one and I stay up late gaming almost every night. That’s actually when I do all of my solo gaming (I do some with my 6-year-old daughter at other times). So that’s totally doable especially with Colin’s job and if your spouse tends to get up earlier as mine does. I will say that the ridiculously late nights and sleeping in extremely late would definitely be less practical and obviously you would have much less total flexibility during the day. I will add that we decided to stop at one kid and I imagine even less flexibility all around if we had more. Also btw I still follow some IGN podcasts and Damon, Justin Davis, and Brian Altano all have kids now.

When I think of PS5, I think of Returnal. It’s not the typical game I gravitate toward but as soon as I booted it up I was hooked. The gameplay loop, the subtle story, the atmosphere. I sunk 60-80 hours into chasing the platinum but could not get the last one in Crimson Waste. Then I learned there was a broken glitch for that trophy and I would have to start completely over if I wanted the platinum. The other option at the time was waiting for a potential patch from Housemarque. I happily erased my save data and dumped another 60 hours to achieve the platinum and now I proudly display it in my PSN profile trophy cabinet.

The craziest thing about MJ in Spider-Man 2 is that Insomniac swore up and down that they didn’t change the model. Kind of like how DLSS 5 supposedly only changed lighting but gave Grace makeup and dark roots. We have eyes and have seen human faces before mf’ers!

Man, I really wish Colin would either stop playing some iffy/crappy games and finally sit down and play either Ys IX Monstrum Nox or Ys X Proud Nordics. I agree with you. I have a ton of health issues which ended up pushing my plans for life back in the personal/family area. But I love gaming and honestly, I’d do almost anything to have a family. Material things only bring so much happiness especially as you get older

I truly hope your dreams for a family come true. At 47 gaming still is that thing for me. I definitely don’t have the time I did prior to kids, but I cannot fathom life without them, it’s just so much better.

I really appreciate that. I hope so too. I’m turning 39 in June and it’s been really existential for me the past few years essentially. Id truly give up all the things I own etc if it meant fixing some of my health problems and having a family. I do well career and money wise but you really do see the emptiness of things as you get older if you are mostly alone.
