Sometimes, PlayStation's userbase gets upset over nothing, and this past week was a great example of that. Rumors and uninformed conjecture rapidly circulated about Sony unleashing a stringent DRM regimen on PlayStation that would force players to check-in with the PSN every 30 days, or lose their digital licenses. That (of course) was complete nonsense, obviously so -- Sony is instead attempting to throttle dishonest people from taking advantage of a quirk in their refund system -- but it didn't stop many talking points from taking hold. And really, isn't it Sony's fault, ultimately? All they had to do was communicate, good or bad. But they didn't, and so the ne'er-do-wells filled the vacuum. Then again, maybe players should be a little more mad at the actual villains: The losers and degenerates who take advantage of loopholes, steal games, and pirate anything they can get their hands on. We discuss at length. Plus: MLB: The Show Mobile slowly expands around the world, Rebel Wolves' extremely promising vampire title The Dawn of Bloodwalker gets a release date, classic NickToon Rugrats gets a games compilation, Star Wars comes to PowerWash Simulator 2, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With Xbox's incessant will they/won't they going on, should we expect Microsoft-published games to continue to come to PS5? Is ARC Raiders and The Finals developer Embark guilty of overtuning their titles? What are the origins of "friendslop"-style games? Is Colin's wife quietly attempting to protect him from complete embarrassment by refusing to allow him to participate in the 100 Chicken Nugget Challenge?

Uggh, I was worried they’d chase this fake drama. I’m tired of pretending ppl who purchase digital games aren’t connected to the internet all the time, or at least once every 30 days. We need to be above this, guys. This is literally a giant nothing-burger.

Wayde

Lots of reasons to not have your gaming system hooked up to the internet. Internet outages, travel, don't have internet etc I was in Asia for almost 3 months recently and my gaming system would have been a brick with theses online requirement policies

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

Lots of reasons 99.9999999% of gamers will never encounter. “0.000001% of Gamers might lose their game under incredibly specific conditions” is not news.

Wayde

Then digital games should be treated like the rentals they are. Paying new game price but not owning it is bullshit. Any restrictions to being able to play the game i bought is unacceptable doesnt matter if it's 1 person affected or millions

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

You didn’t “buy a game”. You bought a license to play their game under conditions you agreed to, and if you don’t like that, or the price they’re asking for, then I would suggest not paying for it. It’s the publisher’s right to distribute their product however they want, and charge whatever they want. You talk like you have a right to access someone elses product in whatever manner you choose at whatever price you choose… and you don’t. None of us do.

Risen

I know Matty played and loved Mouse PI

Wayde

That's such horseshit cope lmao. So you're admitting it's a rental then. Then, they shouldn't market it as buying a game. They should market it as a rental

Wayde

That's primarily what I do

Vanzant

Corporate stooge mentality for a company you don’t work for. Aces

Supes

"You didn’t buy a game" is some of the most genuinely vampiric shit I've read on here in a while. Just truly ghoulish stuff

Black Detective in Dexter

I saw Titanic in theaters with my mom and sister. I was 9. I remember my mom being a little apprehensive about taking me because of the nudity. She made me turn around in my seat when that scene happened and I remember trying to see what was going on in the projector. And I could kind of see them allegheny hogs. When it finally came to vhs, I got to see them in all their glory. Still odd how they just let them hogs fly in a PG-13 movie.

Beef Burka

@Vanzant, it's one of those situations like Colin wants to find with the Xbox shills, who said "going multiplat is absolutely essential" and he wants to catch them saying "exclusivity is essential" if Xbox ever goes back to that. How many of the people saying "who doesn't have their console connected to the internet all the time?" were jeering at Xbox after the reveal of the Xbox One when they were going to have a similar policy?

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

It’s not marketed as buying a game. They literally let you read the terms and conditions that specifically say it’s not at all like buying a physical game. It says in english that you are “purchasing a license”.

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

Point to the part that isn’t true. You can’t. So you whine like this instead. Aces.

Billy but not so Talented

I also used Avid in college and I remember them saying all the TV stations use Avid in Toronto because of the storage. I starting working at Sportsnet and immediately they were like we switched to premiere hope you know how to use after effects!! College was basically paying for an entry level job interview, was fun though.

Black Detective in Dexter

Not sure about the roms but in the Game pass case, pretty sure Dustin said he would be happy to pay the $12 for a month of game pass but if they automatically offer him a refund when he goes to cancel, it would be foolish for him to not accept it. If Microsoft wants to give him his money back after using 29/30 days of game pass, that's on them. I did the same thing for Doom the Dark Ages. Finished it in like 3 weeks. Didn't want to continue my game pass subscription, went to cancel and they gave me a refund. I also would happily pay the $12. Not my problem.

Haru Discourse

I buy almost nothing digitally on console, so it was fun just kicking back with a bucket of popcorn and watching all the meltdowns that happened this week.

king_ryan_james

To Chris’s point, I would certainly buy a retro Spider-Man game collection. Especially if it included Neversoft Spider-Man (2000) and Spider-Man 2. I’d, without hesitation, pay $40-$50 for that

Wayde

It's truly a baffling mentality. The idea that when you put money down for something, you're not buying it is next level stupid. You're not buying a subscription. You're buying the game. If you don't own the game why do they sell it at the same price as physical copies? That's a slippery slope mentality. Next thing you know you're gonna be buying a car at full MSRP but you don't truly own it if the manufacturer decides to shut your car off remotely

Wayde

Just another reason not to buy digital. Being pro digital is akin to being lazy af since the main argument is i don't want to get up to switch disc's lmao

Wayde

What do you think a disc is? Its a license to play the game lmao

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

You literally cannot “own” a digital copy of anything. This isn’t exclusive to games. You may want it to be exactly like owning a physical product but it never was, is, or will be. It’s ridiculous to pretend digital games can or should function exactly like physical discs when the entire system is fundamentally different. A physical disc works because the license, data, and authentication are all contained in one object you physically possess. Digital games are account-based software licenses tied to online ecosystems, cloud entitlements, anti-fraud systems, refunds, bans, and storefront infrastructure. The moment you buy digitally, you’re trading some independence for convenience.

Haru Discourse

Lmao, yeah I don’t mind putting in the “effort” it takes to get up from my couch when it’s for a hobby I’ve put as much money and time into as this one.

Black Detective in Dexter

Wrong, if you buy a digital game from GOG, you own it. You can store the installer and the game on your drive without connecting to GOG, sans the first time when you make the purchase, obviously. You can copy the game and installer as many times as you want and have back ups on multiple drives. You can give it to your friends. It's yours. You own it. You can do whatever you want with it.

Dustin Furman

Exactly what the comment above said. I've said that numerous times on the show. -Dustin

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

Wrong? Lol. GOG is a good example of a more consumer-friendly model, but it doesn’t actually prove “you own digital games like physical ones.” What it shows is that some platforms choose to remove DRM friction, not that ownership changes. You still don’t own the game itself. You’re still operating under a license. You can back it up and reinstall it freely, but you still can’t legally redistribute it or claim rights over the content. So yes, GOG gives you more freedom of use and portability, but that’s not the same thing as full ownership in the physical sense. It’s just a looser license with fewer restrictions. Next.

Wayde

I famously got kicked out of the opening weekend of titanic. I was 12 and went with some friends to the local theater in town. It was Christmas break and we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Unfortunately i started laughing when the bodies hit the propeller and was promptly removed by the ushers. I was not allowed back till summer of 98. To this day, I have not seen the full movie

ChaosZwei+5

Downloading free vita games while I listen to this

Phil Jenkins

Has anybody else who bought Vampire Crawlers on ps5, been credited a small amount back? Apparently there was a price change, at least here in the UK. I paid £9.99 originally, and just received £1 credit. Has this happened across the pond at all?

ChaosZwei+5

Gabe's comments about piracy being a service issue is still just so true Sony won't update bloodborne in any way. Why should I not play in in my pc where it's objectively a better experience? Same with nintendos retro offerings on switch the emulators are a better alternative to what the massive corporations provide I'm not gonna be guilt tripped for using the better option. I'll gladly pay when they make their platform the best place to play. I have a 250 game steam library I love paying for games.

Black Detective in Dexter

Yall are investing wrong. Don't buy individual stocks for large sums. Buy index funds/etfs and dollar cost average. Automate it at an amount you can afford. Set it and forget it. Thank me in 30 years.

rokuterra

Lmao, "no it's not this thing that it literally is". Okay, pal, keep worming your way into not being wrong.

Captain Falcon

Another great episode fellas ❤️‍🔥

ChaosZwei+5

Sucks saros has all that meta progression that kinda stuff makes it so the game kind of beats itself eventually. You the player getting better and that's how you beat it is always better

VOO-Doo Economics

You are 100% correct. The average American doesn't make enough money to simply put money in CDs. 4-5% will not be sufficient for the middle class. You need years of untouched compounding at 7%-10% over decades.

ChaosZwei+5

Based Dustin downloading roms

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

It’s not that complicated man. Literally, no one has ever owned something they’ve purchased digitally, and you can clearly own a disc. It’s that simple and it’s not worming. It’s elaborating because clearly many still struggle with what a digital purchase really is.

ChaosZwei+5

Oh no he played silent hill 3 on emulator how will Konami recover from this. Something being "illegal" has no merit on whether it's bad or not.

Samus1611

No, not a giant nothing burger. DRM is garbage. Implementing new DRM like they did, and not telling you they had changed the terms, is extra garbage. Why should I have to go online again if I don’t want to? I’ve bought games, downloaded them, then went offline for months at a time. But now I can’t do that if I want to. It’s a slow boiling frog scenario. They are turning up the heat, a little at a time, slowly taking more and more rights away. One little thing here. One little thing there.

Virgin Barry

Why is it hard to understand not wanting to even broach the possibility of losing games you paid for? What if the wifi chip dies in my ps5 and now I can’t play any of my digital games? What if the submarine guy bought digital games for a decade and then got the sub job? It’s a very logical thing to be upset at as a customer because it’s all downside from our perspective.

Xemphanis

Here’s the issue with the DRM check. Sony should be removing the license and forcing that person to login to PSN before refunding that person. Instead, they’re putting the entire responsibility on everyone else instead of building the infrastructure to fix their problem. But that would cost them money.

Under Every Town is a Mariana Trench

I feel like “friendslop” started with Garrys Mod/ Counter Strike Source really. You could go further back than that but the modern definition of “streamer/youtuber bait” I feel that was arguably where alot of it came from

Daddy T

Prop Hunt was the proto-slop

Subeg

It’s hard to tell stories in roguelikes imo

Daddy T

As far as I know there is the Licker sound queue at the end of the trailer when the title card pops up.

MnTwinsfan92

The other thing is space can be an issue (I'm someone who has 5 generations of PlayStation games). I moved to only digital on Switch 2 and that one the in a slight worry about carrying all my carts with me when I travel, but I also don't like their key card system.

Ryan

Regardless of if it effects you or a majority or players it’s actually insane to take the offensive stance of ‘you should lose access to your library for no reason because company says so’

Ryan

“Leave the multibillion dollar company alone” vibes coming from anyone who thinks ‘yeah you should lose access to your whole library for no reason because the platform on which I play games says so’ It really doesn’t matter if it effects 1% of the players it’s just the principal. As much as Colin wants to high horse about having as much disposable income as him and the world would be the future city meme if everyone followed his every purchasing system, $70 for a digital game you don’t own and if you can’t go online, Colin thinks you don’t have a right to play, is a harder and harder sell especially today.

Envydiel

Warcraft 3 custom maps were OG friendslop. Years before Halo 3.

MethHaven

Phasmophobia is friend slop and came out way earlier.

Casey Cieslikowski

Couldn’t you just use a wired connection if the WiFi chip breaks?

Ryan

It will but I literally specified about how it’s the principal.

Zixten Larsson

The Repeater Crossbow you get in the Blighted Marsh is the equivalent of the Rotgland Lobber IMO. It has a variant that applies DOT and its alt fire mode is absolutely insane. I'm at the 5th biome so it's possible something even crazier shows up but that was the first weapon that gave me that "Oh yeah, this is now my go to weapon"-feeling I had with the Rotgland Lobber.

Terrorist Jerry

Why do you care? Just because something doesn’t affect you doesn’t mean people can’t have concerns about it.

Terrorist Jerry

I don’t understand Colin’s negative reaction to peoples criticisms of the DRM situation. Yes, people are annoying but I would rather live in a society where annoying people put pressure on corporations than to let everything they do go unchecked.

VanB-Boy 4 life

So Sony does ONE CHECK of the license, and then you’re fine? Sounds like a non issue, but gamers on twitter and Reddit will cry about anything.

The "you shouldn't be mad at Sony for the DRM, you should be mad at people stealing games" is incredibly stupid. "We shouldn't be mad at police abusing their power, we should be mad at the one criminal that lives down the street! We shouldn't be mad at the invasions of privacy, we should be mad at the terrorists!" No, FU. I don't care about this drm that much, but that logic is straight up retarded.

Danio

And let's not pretend like it was some huge issue - who the f was buying games on ps store, going offline, playing them and then returning them? Returning them TO PLAYSTATION mind you. No one. No one did that. I don't buy that they couldn't see on your playstation that the game was being played once you eventually go back online. If you didn't go online on that playstation forever after playing that game for free, then they couldn't see that. But who the f would do that!?

Jordan Wray

Are you like, being intentionally stupid to try and win over Colin or something? Once you've bought a game on Steam your account locally has permanent access to it outside of game specific DRM.

Link

I use my Steam Deck on planes all the time because I travel for work. If I forget to switch to offline mode before I leave most of the games won’t launch. I didn’t say anything about DRM. If you think that you’re going to use your steam deck when you want without internet access, then you’re going to have bad time. I’ve been travelling with my deck since launch and if you think you’re just going to play whatever you want offline without prepping the system first, then you’re in for a rude awakening.

Jordan Wray

Can I get some example games to test this out on, never once experienced, think you might be playing games that have DRM check in requirements which is why I mentioned it, Steam itself does not implement an online check.

Mog

As much shit as people give those Game Key cards from Nintendo, once they're downloaded onto your system you don't need an online verification whatsoever. And you can even trade em in. Dunno, Switch 2 is looking pretty good in my eyes this generation.

Stanley Stoopish

Casey is a Republican. It seems maybe you've not met a Republican. Lol

Wayde

I travel 6 months a year for extended period of time in places that don't have internet or very good internet. It doesn't matter whether it affects one person or another. The fact is, you know, it affects a percentage of people on this planet.

Wayde

I've own every major system since the 2600 and have over ten thousand games in my man cave. You can easily make space for just the current generation.

ChaosZwei+5

Yea ik that and idc it's an unsupported platform who cares.

ChaosZwei+5

"Errrmmm you know that's actually stealing right" 🤓 corny ahh

An optimistic Bears fan

well good thing you can use ethernet. and the rest of your library will be just fine.

Walk Forward Cutscene

Look at the corpo simps replying to you. “At least you can use Ethernet.” Bitch, we’re talking about accessing a game library, not playing a fighting game online.

Virgin Barry

You are missing the forest for the trees. Every problem has some solution that will likely cost time, money or accessibility. Could I rearrange my entire house so my ps5 is next to the modem? Sure, but the point is it’s increased downside that didn’t exist before.

Xbox’s only real move to quickly revitalize Xbox as a platform would be to make Call of Duty exclusive. Even in that scenario, I think it’s more likely that they kill Call of Duty than revitalize Xbox.

zaxby

Colin is so ignorant about the PS5 DRM online-check issue. He completely misses the point here because he speaks from a place of privilege where internet is always available to him.

Gal Sharpton

Who the hell is playing a PS5 that doesn’t have the Internet available to them?

Gal Sharpton

There were friends slop custom games in StarCraft way before Halo three

Kid-Organic

With regards to the DRM controversy, there are times when I don’t turn on my PS5 Pro for well over a month. In the end, the situation doesn’t seem as bad as people think, but don’t assume just because you play everyday or leave your console in sleep mode, that we all do. 🤜🤛

Cole Phelps Sends Babies To Jail

I enjoy hearing people’s thought on weapons in returnal. I love all the pistols, beat 90% of the bosses with them, the erupter handgun especially is very overpowered. My mate loved the crossbow and it’s been his main weapon but I can’t stand it personally. I think we can all agree the smart rifle is the easiest to use though. I can’t get used to the shotgun personally either, the grenade alt is cool but it’s not great for bosses

Anthony Palerino

Sony should have clarified the DRM situation. Since I’m on this Patreon, I’m definitely more informed on PS news than the average player, but I had never heard the “there is no additional DRM check after purchase for the primary console” thing Colin was saying. All of the news implied that you need to be connected to the internet on any PS5 after 30 days for the check.

Bailey Callis

Colin can't seem to understand that we do not trust Sony, or any big cooperation for that manner. No I would not be so shocked if they took our games away some day, or imposed more limitations on our libraries, it wouldn't be sudden it would be gradual, boiling the frog. Also, the idea that newer consoles are bricks without internet unlike all past consoles is unsettling

Glen Yelenovic

Mario Party is the proto-friend slop
