We know many of you are tired of talking about Bungie, and frankly, we're kind of tired of discussing them, too. Then again, we're captive to the news, so blame Sony for purchasing them. On the back of last week's discussion about the end of Destiny 2 comes word that Bungie is planning major layoffs as it attempts to greenlight a new project to develop alongside the ongoing Marathon. And no, Destiny 3 isn't happening. At least not yet. What's next for this beleaguered team? If we're being totally candid and honest, does a future for Bungie even really exist at all? There's lots of other news this week, too, including rumors surrounding Media Molecule's next game, the peculiar re-reveal of the long-in-development Dragon Quest XII, the confirmation of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and its October release, trouble surrounding PlayStation 3 emulation on Linux, The Witcher 3's new expansion coming more than a decade after the last, Persona 4 Remake's surprise South Korean games rating, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! Are indie games treated more softly than AA/AAA games when it comes to reviews? What could the drastic increase in SteamDeck pricing mean for PlayStation 6? Is former Sony second party partner Quantic Dream doomed? Why would anyone try to talk about Sacred Symbols with Magic: The Gathering nerds?

Episode length is completely intentional

Andrew Ceris

wouldve been more intentional if it was 4:21:09

Michael

The pic made me think Zelda was coming to PlayStation.

Mark Burn

What the HELL is Colin doing in that thumbnail 🥀

NUTSO JIMBO

Oh hell yeah. Just done 2 edibles as well. Gotta listen to SS high.

Jared Clark

Just a terrifying cover for the ep

Terrorist Jerry

I fast forwarded to the Pragmata section because I was really excited to hear Colin’s thoughts on one of the best games of the year. Instead we just get 20 seconds of “it’s awesome. I’ll talk about it on Summon Sign?” I thought Summon Sign wasn’t supposed to be a replacement for the What We’re Playing section? Sacred Symbols is the biggest PlayStation podcast yet we don’t get to hear about what the flagship host of the show is playing? Maybe I’m just a retarded 5 year old but I think the audience wants to hear a bit more than a 20 second review. I even wrote in a question about Pragmata because I was so interested in Colin’s opinions on the game.

Kelzilla

That thumbnail art is ridiculous! Well done!

ChaosZwei+5

Hey I'm a sacred symbols magic the gathering nerd

Dante B

Thank you Colin for at the top of the show, in reference to people protecting their relationship with Sony, saying “they have no games anymore.” I know the “but where are the gamessssss” mocking is all in good fun, but we’ve kind of been pretending that we don’t know full well that no one means there are literally no new games coming out. Everyone specifically means the dearth of first party.

John Carroll

First time I’ve heard Colin using the word “shite”, (about the straws). Getting in touch with his Irish side

Vonoran

Wouldn’t a return to Joe Rogan podcast be the exact platform that would help Colin get the word out about Sony’s hacking vulnerabilities?

SL

According to Jason Schreier in this excellent video about the whole Destiny collapse, one of the major reasons that a Destiny 3 never got off the ground was because SONY didn't want to spend the kind of money it would require, particularly not in the current gaming environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXDPYftyIn4 When Bungie first started Destiny, Activision agreed to 500 million dollars over 10 years. Given how exponentially the cost of making games has risen since 2014, it might take 500 million just to make the game alone, never mind the cost of continuing live service content, marketing etc. Destiny fans (of which I was one, until The Final Shape, when I signed off) seem to believe that a Destiny 3 would be an automatic hit on par with the heights of Destiny 1 or Destiny 2, but the truth is the gaming market has changed in that time. There are way more 'forever games' of different types and scale. Destiny 3 wouldn't be creating a new market, they'd be in the position of trying to rip users away from other games they're invested in to reach those kinds of numbers. Sony doesn't have the appetite to take the billion dollar risk. They'd rather spend much less and try to get Marathon into a stronger position.

Dustin looks so cute in the thumbnail 🥰

Sony should pick up tlou pt 2 multiplayer again and force bungie to keep it alive Don’t know if a game has ever been uncanceled but with how much of a disaster acquiring bungie has been for PlayStation I doubt they’d be able to do anything that would be as big especially with how it’s their fault it was canceled in the first place

Tim the legend

So, what’s the order for socks and shoes?

ChaosZwei+5

Sock sock shoe shoe. Left first both times

If Colin was Filipino thumbnail lmao

Colin, I took my magic cards into a shop to sell last month. I had 1 box of cards from the late 90's early 2000's. They gave 50% value and I got 650 bucks. Had no idea they were worth that much I would have been happy with 100 bucks. Just take those cards in and get a little chunk of change. At least let someone who wants them have them instead of collecting dust.

They Now Call Me UNC.

I doubt Joe Rogan would give a fuck. Also, probably the wrong audience as well.

Vonoran

Colin was previously on twice.

Beef Burka

Hmm..Some people not covering the Colin Hack to protect their relationship with Playstation. Could some of them also be the same games media companies that ignored the Insomniac leak for the same reason? I remember a lot of people pointing out how hypocritical and two faced those outlets seemed at the time, because they merrily reported on leaks from other publishers, but refused to cover the Insomniac leak, and they had all kinds of weaselly excuse for why they considered the Insomniac Leaks different.

Joe B

Surely Colins not this oblivious to the simple economics of Supply and Demand, right? Asking why Nintendo doesnt just reprint Gamecube games or make endless Pokemon cards seems to ignore the fact the limited supply is what drives the demand.

Addison117

Is the wiffle ball league on ESPN 8 the ocho along with dodgeball and squirrel water skiing.

lazer_josh

I fucking BEGGED my parents for a n-gage and got one for christmas. It was soooo bad. Then a kid bullied me and stole it

Del Griffith

I don’t think Colin is going to like Mina the Hollower. It’s a Soulslike.

ChaosZwei+5

Yep epic store is just my Fortnite launcher I have a desktop shortcut for Fortnite set up so I never have to see that god awful story as much as possible

Ray

The thumbnail is terrifying

Envydiel

Like Don Mattrick said, if you want gameplay talk, they have a show for you.

Envydiel

It's pretty dumb reasoning tbh, any 5 year project from an 800 person team in Washington is going to cost the same amount. They're absolutely not going to spin up anything quicker from scratch. Herman has got to go.

ChaosZwei+5

I don't know if indies are necessarily treated kinder I just think good indie games are better than AAA games. It makes sense indies are way more focused and made with reasonable expectations and better prioritization games doing one or a few things exceptionally well will always be better than bloated AAA games that have way too much budget and time to be made into a properly focused and consistent experience they have too many chefs in the kitchen and feel oftentimes generic. There are more bad indie games but that's bc there's just so many more of them being created. I've played some indie games with just a couple hundred steam reviews that easily wipe even the best AAA games I've played. I think it makes perfect sense that games created by a more dedicated and focused team or even just one person will obviously end up being better works.

Lapsed Destiny fan here. Bungie have been a disaster ever since Destiny launched in 2014. Disappointing games. Law suits everywhere. Executive suite that was more interested in their cars then saving their people their jobs. They released, what, 4 decent expansions across the entirety of D1 and D2 (Taken King, Forsaken, Witch Queen and Final Shape) - that's 4 in 12 years, that's terrible. They have consistently failed in communicating a vision for their games and how they'll fix player concerns - often lying and introducing worse consumer practices than those the player base were already rightfully complaining about. The Final Shape was the last hurrah for many players to say good bye, nothing more. Bungie is a bigger, and more expensive Bioware. They are a shell of the studio that released Destiny. And would need completely rebuilding if they are to meet expectations that were set when they were purchased, I don't see a reality where Sony do this as apposed to just building a new studio, carve out the worthless elements, save the parts worth saving and build a new IP. What really annoys me is that most fans in the Destiny fanbase could see these problems for Sony way before they bought them. They were clearly given an image of a high performance machine, they bought it, became convinced of its inherent success that turned out to be largely surface level and are paying for it now that they have seen what's under the hood - a bloated, toxic mess. There are countless channels, an entire Destiny subreddit and Destinys own forums that are a historical catalogue of their continued mistakes and player frustrations. Sony inherited all that when they purchased the studio. The evidence was there that Bungie should never have been a company worth investing in, let alone buying completely, especially for Sony. Bungies split with Activision was the canary in the coal mine. Bungie has always been a pain in the arse to whom ever owned them. Now given all this, do I care about Bungie? No. But I care about what they have cost the PS ecosystem. I think about all the studios, games and IP those billions of dollars could have been better spent on. Could that money have saved studio closures? Spun up a ND support studio to help with The Last of Us Online? Maybe but we'll never know. The disappointment is palpable and not even Destiny 3 could bring this D1 launch day player back.

Envydiel

The goatse phone 😂

Envydiel

Could be the game that gets him into souls likes

SL

I still don't believe that bullshit that TLOU Factions was cancelled because Naughty Dog woke up one day and realized 'damn, it takes a lot of manpower to keep creating content for a live service game'. They'd have to be the dumbest group of people on Earth not to know that going in. I think it's much likelier that despite all their efforts, the game was mediocre to bad, and they came up with an excuse to walk away.

SL

"4 decent expansions in 12 years" is a bit unfair. The released 4 fantastic expansions in 12 years. The vast majority of the expansions were decent to very good. Several were mediocre or at least uneven. A few were downright terrible. That's not including vanilla Destiny or vanilla Destiny 2. Over 12 years of continuous content creation for the same property, that's actually not a bad hitrate at all.

SL

Pragmata is mechanically one of the best games Ive played in years and narratively one of the worst I've ever played in my life.

SL

Colin has been on the podcast. He uses sentences that are too complex for Joe or the average Joe Rogan viewer to keep up with. So it's a lot of Rogan nodding and saying ok, yeah, totally, wow, etc.

SL

I am that guy who has put 300+ hours in Marathon, and yes, I am obsessed with the game. It is the first and only extraction shooter that has ever hooked me, let alone taken over my life. I think the free week every season would be fantastic. Personally speaking, it took me awhile to get over 'gear fear' and stop coveting weapons. One of the big turning points for me, and something I think Bungie would be wise to make more obvious, is that the game gives you multiple ways to get some decent gear and jump back in for another run. Free kits in the store, upgrades to factions that unlock more free upgrades and perks, even the existence of Rook to jump in for no-consequences money-making or loot grabbing runs. Losing gear isn't nearly as devastating as it first seems. I think if people have a free week to play, there's a chance they'll go deep enough to realize that decent gear is plentiful, and epic gear is only one awesome run away.

Publix Chicken tender sub

That is on point the main character from Dragon Quest 12 looks exactly like an alcoholic baby syndrome

Justin Schwab

I look at the success of Capcom and all of their franchises today as being directly linked to having good series producers As someone that loves many franchises from Square, I think they need to focus in on the four or five of them that are the biggest. Have series producers that can make not just mainline titles but spin-offs and remakes. There is no reason that fans of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest and even something like Nier can't receive multiple titles every year.

Subeg

Keep up the great work!

Aaron

Sadly but understandably Matty will probably want to do the Xbox show reaction solo

Aaron

Pat the NES punk actually covered Colin’s PSN banning as well.

Subeg

I honestly think internally, Sony wants all the initiatives that came from Herman to fail so they can have a tangible excuse to fire him.

C

I agree, we know Summon Signs is there but if you’re going to have a ‘what we’re playing’ section, I don’t think it’s outrageous to expect a couple of minutes of a discussion on it.

Deemac

I think this happens often with games Colin comes to slightly later, as he doesn't want to talk as much about a game if Chris/Dustin previously have on Sacred. I can see similar happening with 007 - I'm absolutely loving this game and great to hear the 2 boys are sharing that enthusiasm, I'm already looking forward to the spoilercast. But I hope once Colin gets to that he shares his in depth thoughts also, and doesn't feel like he can't spend more time on it if he's missed the spoilercast. Very much interested in his thoughts as someone not as much into the Hitman games (I don't think), but who enjoys the Uncharted style action adventure games, which 007 has similarities to.

Deemac

They're actually having a great 2026 though? Sure the PS5 gen could and should have been much better if certain studios put out a single player games rather than try live service - and there was a definite lull in the middle around say 2023/2024. But the last few years of the gen look to be finishing strong for PS Studios, and I don't see a huge difference to the PS4 gen in that sense. Even with the PS4 Playstation had typically focused on 2/3 big titles a year with potentially some partnerships padding things out (eg Tokon and Kena this year), and 3rd party takes care of the rest. It's just as disingenuous at this point to act like "They have NO games" tbh

Joshua Brown

Has Colin getting Marty O’Donnell on the show ever been talked about? I love Bungie but would love to hear Colin pick Marty’s brain about past and present Bungie.

A very special boy

I dont know why bungie wont make a single player campaign of destiny 1 and 2. I dont care about the multi-player aspect i just wanna play the story.

Dante B

What’s disingenuous is to act like we don’t know exactly what people mean. No one thinks there has been literally “no” games. There is an obvious, extreme dearth of first party games compared to PS3 and PS4 generations. PS5 has been out nearly six years now so pointing to the last five months means nothing. We haven’t seen a single game from several of Sony’s major, fan favorite, tent pole studios the entire generation. None of this is opinion.

markus w

It's more like 85 degrees regarding the temperature r.n. and at least here : ac's in appartments isn't standardized .They dont allow it mostly , at work it's more common in terms of productivity

Xenomorph Moriarty

I know it’s the news and you’re obligated to cover it but goddamn is the bungie discussion tired. It’s just the same points being made over and over again for like 30+ minutes every time it comes up :/

Ryan

It’s a very hard sell to any large group of people to say ‘hey this games great but you basically have a 3 week window where it’s fun to start playing and outside of that you’re just gonna be getting wiped by super soldiers oh by the way everything you’re earning is gonna be fine in a couple months’ I just don’t think extraction shooters can fill the live service void that they’re looking for. I mean even arc raiders only really started falling off once people started learning about the the first big reset, and the weeks following it.

Del Griffith

Maybe. I’m a souls fan and a zelda fan and so far I’m not digging this game. I’m super bummed about it.

Walk Forward Cutscene

I love Remedy, but absolutely hated the gameplay in AW2. Resonant looks great and I’m looking forward to the Max Payne remakes

C

Is the Dragon Quest character not just meant to reflect that he is struggling to sleep because of the dreams? Hence the black shadows under the eyes? I’ve no issue with him at all.

Michael McCoy

No mention of the Rayman leaks? Fake gamers.
