It seems that no matter where one looks in the gaming industry, there's bad news on the horizon. Such is certainly the case with Sony, as the Japanese company announced two pieces of bad news concurrent to one another: That beginning in 2028, PlayStation hardware will no longer receive disc-based releases, and that by next summer, you will no longer be able to buy digital PS3 and Vita games. All things considered, the latter is a more understandable decision (after all, Sony tried to do this back in 2021 before pulling back), but the former situation has set the PlayStation fanbase alight in a way we've not seen since perhaps 2011, if not 2006, both extremely ominous years in the brand's history. We discuss both topics in great detail, incorporate a ton of your inquiries, and try to make sense of what's happening from every conceivable angle. There's other news this week, too, including Sony's stance on hardware subsidies, PlayStation's continuing commitment to the games-as-a-service sector, new roster additions for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is Exodus' scrapping of its in-game character creator a sign of things to come? Why are some publishers and developers so secretive with sales figures? What potential ideas could emulate the interplay between EVE Online and Dust-514? Did Dustin answer the Dustin-signal that Colin sent into the atmospheric ether?Timestamps:

Just have to mention the digital percentage sales are inflated by a vast amount of games that are not sold physically. Big games like baldurs gate 3 which sold over 20 million units and have no physical release in the USA. Of games that have both physical and digital releases over 30 percent are physical sales. That 10 percent number is bs and artificially lowered. They have been pushing this agenda for almost 20 years now. You will own nothing and like it. Im out no ps6 for me

Jonathan Gonzalez

Dustin....the hero last stand deserves, AND the one it needs right now.

Wayde

A sad dystopia future indeed. All created by these companies pushing digital so we dont own anything. Baldurs gate was the last 20 million seller that didn't have physical. I bet you 7 million physical copies would have been sold if they did

Ryan Taylor

An early drop? Hell yeah very nice.

Yup, this has gotta be a big part of it all

Are they still not understanding the buying keys on other store fronts? It's not steam, gog, or epic on the PlayStation console it's buying PSN keys from places like best buy or target.

I’m not buying a PS6 anymore. Anyways, Colin, if you didn’t see it, Lucas Thomas is publishing another MegaMan book. There’s a kickstarter out there with Nintendo Force, his outfit.

I buy all games digital and use PSN gift cards from Costco. They’re always 10% off and commonly have sales for 15% off, combine this with the 4% cash back with the Costco credit card, and it’s solid. PlayStation also has their own credit card, which I also have, and it gives you 5x the points for any purchases made from PSN or PlayStation.com So there’s great ways out there to save on digital purchases.

PairOfShuse

There are so many things to talk about that obviously it would take a book to respond to everything and give thoughts. The thing I do not understand are the statements of thinking Sony doesn’t want to stop providing the games you bought. They are literally ending physical games sales to save money (even just on the service, with more info coming out looks like they might be repurposing their plant for products that support AI development and data centers) so why wouldn’t they just be like eh, you can’t download your games anymore after X amount of years. What do they really care? Some of the executives were on record saying why would you play *insert old game* anymore like old games are just terrible. Just as they are a company and we all know their main concern is making money, a point said here repeatedly, then why wouldn’t they abandon “old” customers if they thought it would make money

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Feels like PlayStation burnt the last of its good will but where would scorned fans go? XBOX is fighting for its life, pc's are crazy expensive and I doubt PlayStation players want to make Switch 2 their main console. Sony has everyone in the corner. I just hope the noise makes them backtrack

Ryan

It’s hard not to feel like a doomer but I’ll just say it’s crazy that the best the gaming industry could be happened so early in my lifetime. The ps3/360/pc was about as good as it’s gonna get and coming to terms with that is a tough pill to swallow. Everything’s getting absurdly expensive, no physical games, no one cares about the next console, Fortnite and zoomer brainrot slop dominates every category in terms of popularity. It really was a good run, but I don’t see how I can get that excitement back if these are the things we have to rationalizes

DIS-Bee

Sony is too confident again boys. Can't wait to buy an Xbox

ChaosZwei+5

This is pretty unfortunate news this week but honestly it would be for the best if consoles died completely a better world would have gamers use a pc. But even that right now is made difficult by really expensive components. My hope is that eventually the ai bubble either pops or dies down and we see gamers move to pc where they would be happier.

Joe B

Dustin is spot on with the take that Steam is where alot of people will go for games now if its all digital. I just bought a $2000 PC and added SteamOS to it. While yes its $1100 more than a PS5 Pro for similiar performance, I have multiple storefronts with larger libraries as well as multiple websites to buy Steam Keys on that offer varied prices. I sure as hell wont be picking Sonys PSN of all the storefronts to rely on when investing in a large digital library going forward.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

This decision from Sony will absolutely change my buying habits. I normally buy 3rd party games on PS5 physical. Because I like collecting and sometimes getting a better deal. I also play on PC but my rig is getting older now. I was about to buy 007 PS5 just before this news hit. I ended up getting it on Steam and buying a month of Geforce Now. Works great, looks great. Honestly I have zero problem now buying big 3rd party games on Steam and buying a month of Geforce Now to play them. I can even play it on my phone if I want. Chris and Dustin are right. If I'm forced to buy it digitally. PC all the way.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

100% agree. My PC is getting old but buying a month of Geforce Now to play a new game is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a PS6 for 1000+$

BigDumbStupidIdiot

I saw the factory workers are being retrained. I was hoping they could sell physical DTC but that hope is fading

Here to be that annoying guy and correct Colin: snakes are venomous not poisonous. 🤪 which I’m sure he does know I just had to, because he busts write ins balls all the time. love the podcast as always. 🫡 dustiiiinnnnn ❤️

If there is no physical option on PS6. I'll only buy games at 80% off. I currently buy them day 1 physical. Ill just save a lot of money.

Solid Skink

Thank you, Dustin for responding to your call of duty 🙏amazing show guys ❤️🙌🏼

I've been a PlayStation customer since 1998. Today, I sold my PS5 Pro and will be buying a new graphics card. This is just so anti-consumer, it's unreal. If I'm going to be forced into an all-digital future, I'd rather do it on an open platform with storefront pricing competition and without an outdated, overpriced locked-down kit. Something I've struggled with on PS5 is the Dualsense. The controller actively gives me extreme hand pain. Sony won't even let you use the DS4 on PS5 games. I had to buy a $70 third party dongle just to be able to use it. This is unacceptable in the current era. All these small things add up to a lot. Sad, sad day for me personally. Loved the brand, can't hang with a company that actively works against it's customers.

Addison117

Unfortunately this might turn Sony into Nintendo where the best you get is 20% off.

Publix Chicken tender sub

Dude exactly! what Chris said “If I go digital then I go PC “ spitting facts!

Jacob Lesperance

You're probably right. But, 3rd party will still have insane discounts. The PSN sales the last few years have gotten very good. What they are doing with this physical situation is ridiculous. I don't even care if I have to pay a premium for a disc. I know there are 10's of millions of people who still buy physical. It's not like its a super niche market. Especially when it comes to their first party.

Susan B. Anthony Bourdain

Digital storefronts should be barred from using "Buy" or generic "Purchase" buttons. It's misleading to the point of doing meaningful harm to consumers. The purchase button on storefronts should say "Lease," "License," or "Rent" and present conspicuous, plain language explanation right next to the button...something like "You will have access to this for as long as the PlayStation Store is online, not in perpetuity. Click here to learn more." That is the absolutely bare minimum.

The Corn Rocket

Rockstar Games has reportedly surpassed 39 million pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6, generating over $3 billion in revenue ahead of its November 19, 2026 launch. A reported 72% of these pre-sales are for the $100 Ultimate Edition. If these numbers are true it renders every argument against digital only and game price irrelevant.

CombatSneeze

I thought those numbers were completely made up

Izzy Smalls

The response to Sony stopping physical games proves yet again the internet isnt a real place. So many want to cry about losing something they didnt support to begin with. Physical games, Japan Studios, Insomniacs non-Marvel games etc. The writings been on the wall for years. No one shouldve been suprised.

Izzy Smalls

Chris vastly overstates the impact of Xbox Ones "TV , TV, TV" reveal and how Xbox never recovered. Sony also had a catastrophic reveal with "$600 US dollars" for the PS3 and came back after getting their ass kicked for half that gen. Nintendo came back after the abomination that was the WiiU. The idea they couldnt have been more competitive is a joke.

YP-Berserk

Im just going to PC now. What advantage does PS have? Paid online? I can still use the dualsense, I get better buying options with a larger choice of games. They don’t seem to want to make exclusives for me anymore and basically any game worth its salt comes to PC anyway. My most anticipated game that somy is involved with is Marvel Tokkon and that’s on PC… Not even gonna get into stuff like mods and whatnot.

Frank G.

Haven't clicked on an SS this hard for a long time.

Wayde

Did you ever stop to think that thats what sony has been pushing for. You have been propagandized by sony. When taking in account games available both digitally and physically the splits are closer to 35-40 percent physical. They don't want to share the pie its simple as that

Wayde

When giving nobody a choice of course it looks ridiculous. I bet that 39 million would be 45-50 with physical sales included. 30 percent clip of 50 million is 15 million physical sold. But they want all the proceeds

Dante B

So. The white noise machine. I thought this was utter nonsense until my wife bought one. I used to be the guy who did exactly what you said, just played YouTube as I’m going to sleep. I can’t articulate the difference between an app and an actual machine (we use a Hatch) - but it’s tremendous and has upped my sleep quality significantly. It completely drowns out everything else and simulates it in a way that just sound on a loop does not. It isn’t an easy sell and I completely understand why. No one was more skeptical than me. But if you’re curious, try it.

matthew

I really don't think this will die down come ps6 launch. I think they'll have to close their comment section.

Wesali

I've noticed for a while that PS don't discount the base versions of games. It annoys me. Seems to be a way of extracting a few more dollars out of you.

Ryan

Culturally the Xbox brand never really recovered. They were so strong going into that generation and all the One did was generate bad press.

Ben King

For the King is excellent. I haven’t played 2 yet so that’s a great addition to the subscription. I’ve logged about 60 hours over the past 18 months with my wife and we just get lost in it for 4-6 hours at a time. Highly recommend the original for coop. I think the sequel is 4 player coop, instead of 3 player.

Ryan

I don’t think Sony is going to like people’s choice when faced with an all digital gaming ecosystem.

Izzy Smalls

I havent been propagandized by anyone. I havent bought a physical game in a decade because its more convenient nothing more nothing less lol. Literally every entertainment medium has abandoned physical media wtf are we talking about? If more people were buying physical games Sony shutting It down.

Froilan

Sales on PSN have been good because physical was a thing. Once that goes away I guarantee those types of sales will go away

Austin Evans

I have been a PS fan from the PS1, bought vita and psvr day one, but with this announcement my buying habits are already changing and I am going to be done with Sony . I stopped my reoccurring ps plus premium subscription I have had for years. I was excited for their new handheld which was undoubtedly going to be digital only but am hesitant to support sony at all right now. If i have no option to own my games i will not invest in this exo system, and will choose not to buy sony games. If i need to play one of their games in the future i will not support and simply play by other means. I used to always support developers, but If we do not own games anymore i have no remorse if i dont support them. Not too excited for the future of gaming and I have no issues with speaking with my wallet.

Jacob Lesperance

I just stopped my premium as well. It runs out in December. I'm going to play all the games I wanted to get to on there and only those until the sub runs out. Then get to the games I already own. Wolverine and Black Flag will be last 2 day ones for the year.

Jacob Lesperance

If that we're true there would be no sales on steam. The fact of the matter is the market is over saturated. Deep sales are away to stand out now.

Austin Evans

My big concerns, writing off them taking away movies purchased is such BS. Licking the boot of a billion dollar corporation who agreed to sell customers movies and then taking them away WITHOUT a refund is completely unacceptable, and does not bode well for an all digital future. If you argue it’s not a big deal cause no one was buying movies then it’s not a big deal for the corporation to give these people full refunds. Also Sony has such bad infrastructure/ security someone can get their account stolen with in a day and Sony will do nothing for you unless you have insider access. I have lost all faith in Sony and have been buying things physically previously. If they are screwing over their customer I have no guilt playing Sony games in an unsavory way and not support them.

VanB-Boy 4 life

And as I write this, Newegg is selling $200 PSN cards for 20%. I haven’t paid “full price” for a game in about a decade. Combine these discounts with PSN sales, and I really can’t get behind the complaining about how much digital is.

Supes

Right, which is why I don't buy the argument of "the consumers have made their choices!". Consumers aren't always GIVEN a choice- oftentimes they're simply beholden to what a megacorporation like Sony is willing to give them. That's true in videogames and in everything else too. The whole notion that "consumers always make rational decisions and therefore numbers like these absolutely reflect people's preferences" is a fundamental misapprehension of consumer psychology and consumption habits, it's the kind of argument you hear from like 15-year-old libertarians on reddit lol

Dante B

Colin is right that the movies being rug pulled on PSN impacts basically zero people. But that’s not why people are up set either. It’s not these movies, it’s the behavior, and seeing a live example of a scenario that will almost certainly be real for us at some point in our lifetime.

Wayde

Once again over 35 percent buy physical when a choice is presented. That's not a low number

C

Made the decision the minute Sony put that announcement out, I won’t be buying a PS6, I already didn’t see a need for one to come, what feels too soon, and this is just the icing on the cake. Unless this decision is reversed, I will likely be moving to PC at some stage in the future, I’m in no rush for the moment, have a backlog that will take me years to clear. I would imagine I’m not the only one. This will damage Sony 100%.

Envydiel

Would've been funny if they did actually have Brad on last week

Ryan Byers

The overreacting this has caused is absurd. So because Sony is going digital only, you are going to switch over to Steam, another digital only service? And the arguments about the price are ridiculous too. Just because a theoretical ps6 is near $1000 doesn't suddenly justify paying an additional $500 to get a great gaming pc. That feels really out of touch with the average person.

Mama Micah

I have a Hatch alarm because I like waking up to the light instead of a sound. I use the fireplace noise at bedtime and it's very soothing. -Micah

Addison117

Its not only the digital only future PlayStation is going its the lack of security for peoples accounts. I know its been beat to death already but look what happened to colin last month. Steam is an all digital platform yes but the security and trust in they have with peoples libraries is no where near what Sony has, hell i have more trust in XBOX and Nintendo with my digital purchases.

Taylor kazemba

Can’t another company just make blu rays and vita carts? Some Chinese company can surely make vita carts.

Dante B

Love it! I do the same, fade out to Stormy Slumber when I go to bed and it’s a Beach Landscape with an orange light to wake up. It really does make a difference.

Ben Bell

Just to give my 2 cents of perspective on the internet connection being a non issue Colin mentioned. I have several people I know who live in rural communities here in Canada that do not have any cell service on their property and only get middling speeds with starlink most of the time. They can download games, sure, but they're looking at days if not a week for some of these file sizes. These people live within 20 minutes of 50,000+ people cities, but they have little to know digital infrastructure.

Tristan Kimball

I like collecting 4k and blu ray disks cuz the quality is so much better than streaming. I collect vinyl too for albums I love. Games these days are so often not even fully on the disc, and even if they are, the digital version is the exact same thing, just as high quality. Only argument i see for physical games is ownership and preservation, and that is fair. But it doesn’t change that so many of these games aren’t ready to play out the box anyway. So i lost interest in new physical games halfway through the ps4 gen, i have some ps3 and a decent amount of ps2 games on disc but I don’t see the point in modern games on physical anymore. This news still sucks and has no upside, but I think physical games have been dead. Hopefully we still get lots of digital sales after the physical market and used games market dies. That’s one thing I could see being a major downside to no physical is that digital prices have no competition

Dr. N-Word Cortex

I think Dustin has finally beaten the “Brad cares more about LSM” allegations boys

Josephine

Windows is a miserable experience.

Josephine

Vita cards in 2026? What are you on about?

Michael Mashpotato

Fatherhood is amazing, congratulations Dustin. Its nice to hear him talk about it and hear the joy in his voice. ❤️

Remington Wilson

Yep, I was early, but I did the 2 years ago.

Stephen

It may be anecdotal but I was planning on buying both PS6 versions at launch (and have bought every PS at launch since PS2) but will no longer do so. This gen has been so disappointing from first party. They can go fk themselves. I’ll buy used physical for PS3-5 for the years to come. Also, people compare now to PS3. This is nothing like that. They were pumping out first party exclusives back then. They stumbled but rarely due to the greed we see now. Even the high PS3 price was reflective of a phenomenal piece of hardware that they were losing money on.

Stephen

I think most people just won’t buy PS6. I know I won’t be and I was planning on getting both.

Surge!

The minute a physical game could no longer function as it once had, I was lost for the plot to keep them going forever. No more manuals? Sucks, but whatever. But now games have begun to exceed the capacity of the discs themselves, leaving excess data that requires you to wait for another download. And now this whole digital code-in-a-box deal with some titles. I hate that the consumer has less purchasing power, but the thing we're fighting for is just a box on the shelf to me.

Josephine

Can I play Returnal on PC without using Windows and Direct X?

Tyler Blanchard

Congrats to Colin for allowing and praising Sony for staying silent. I love your content man but celebrating and saying that that strategy is great, is exactly why they haven’t answered for the atrocious decision to end physical media.

ChaosZwei+5

Yea steams proton layer. Nobody is forcing you to use windows there's so few game exceptions if you're using a Linux pc it's not even worth mentioning. Pc you at least have the option consoles are closed systems and we both know none of the consoles offer satisfactory user experiences.

Kevin Cooper

The plural form of vinyl is vinyl. (no, I will not stop posting this comment)

dennis riha

I pre-ordered GTA 6 Deluxe edition and have no regrets. Consumers killed physical media.

James Schorn

I disagree with Chris on the goodwill argument. Good will is just like mercy, nobody cares when the side that is losing makes a pro consumer choice it’s just seen as an attempt to claw back some yards. Thats why people jump for joy when steam makes a pro consumer decision but when epic literally gives you FREE games for just existing on their storefront people just shrug and say “I still won’t go over to your platform”. Nobody praises epic for doing it even though it’s undoubtedly a pro consumer gesture, now imagine if steam gave away free games every month people would kneel before the shrine of Lord Gaben. Good will is only won when it is seen as a choice.

TeddyTaggs

It takes my pain, takes my pain away

The Big Bong

After sony deleting over 500 movies from accounts, where ist colins shift of his opinion, that in a digital environment/digital library never something will be deleted? Hey always talked dustin about that down. Is Colin somehow now more a corporate apologist? until he gets a problem himself… sometimes I don't get him… a little hypocritical.

Joseph Cerini

As some one works in IT, yall acting unrealistic. In the case of the PS3 store closing, it is like Microsoft retiring windows 10, while the windows 10 OS will work for a little bit more time, the windows 10 store verison will be gone so any app you purchased there will also be gone. You could make a backup of the apps you want to keep, In IT we do this with research apps and old copies of Adobe etc but it is on us to do that. Anything apart from that is just a nice bonus. So Sony keep the PS3 store alive for 6 more years was them being nice, and them allowing downloads pass the closing of the ps3 store is just them being nice. If a developer/publisher wanted, they could always release old games on the web but this is rare in games and elsewhere. And the games preservation argument just doesn't work because the developers/publishers who own the rights could do it if they really wanted. O its been 20 years since this game came out, it is now free. Almost no one does this.

Yet

You don’t own discs you own a personal license 9/10 times do y’all not understand that in the gaming “industry” Nothing is changing here except you can’t resell as easily and who on sacred is doing that

Chris Deadman

Big question Sony needs to answer ASAP. Will there be anyway to play current physical games on the PS6?? People need to know so they can decide if they continue to buy physical games or switch to physical immediately. I’m sure Sony would like nothing better than to sell you a game physically and then have to buy it again digitally.

Don’t say it too loudly the redditors who love discs to stare at might cry

This decision will make the ps5 be my last console, If Ms decide to keep disks I will go to Xbox, if digital will be the only way left, then it will be on pc
