We're more than a week removed from the controversial decision to scrap new physical releases for PlayStation hardware beginning in early 2028, and even with a robust outpouring of rage from a portion of its hardcore audience, Sony doesn't seem like it's going to budge. This has come to surprise some people; yet, the longer Sony continues its silence on the topic, the more unlikely it'll be that anything will change. Will the Japanese megacorporation's wait-and-see approach pay off? Is there still time to turn the ship around? Are physical buyers vastly overestimating their power and positioning? There's much more to discuss surrounding the worst period of PR for the PlayStation brand since 2011. Other news this week includes furor over language in the European PSN's terms of service, drama surrounding Marvel Tokon's release on Steam, significant layoffs at Xbox that deeply affect PlayStation-aligned developers like id and Obsidian, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is it weird that Sony executives sold more than $10 million in stock after their infamous physical games announcement? What's going on with EA's insane monetization policies in College Football 27? Why couldn't Bluepoint spin-out from Sony like Microsoft is allowing some of its teams to do? Does Dustin have similarly arcane powers as Brad, just pointed in the opposite direction?Timestamps:

My biggest issue with Sony at the moment is I feel like they've deteriorated their brand. I know it wouldn't matter if I leave their ecosystem, but as a consumer since PS1, I've never felt less appreciated by them as a company and them just ignoring their fans is frustrating

Supes

I think we can apply Occam’s Razor to Sony’s lack of response at this point: it’s clear their strategy is just “say nothing and wait for the controversy to die down” because they don’t give a shit about the negative feedback or the physical market, full stop. They've made their choice and they're sticking with it. Sony's a corporation- they’re in the business of making money, not pleasing a minority of their audience (and I say this as a physical gamer who has zero interest in a PS6). I think it’s like Serkan Toto suggested- they ran the numbers and figured enough people would stick with digital to where they could abandon a portion of their audience and say “Fuck it, we’ll do it anyway.” That’s the corpo way for ya, baby.

mercuryas13

Great Alan Parsons Project reference

ChristianLikeTheReligion

Anybody else getting a glitch on their podcast apps showing the episode is 22 minutes?

DylanTyWinkie

Does anyone else have an issue with this app and it rewinding an episode when you come back to it later? I’ll pause it and close app and come back to it the next day and rewinds my progress by like 45 minutes. Then I struggle to find where I was😂

Wayde

It was always highly unlikely that sony was going to reverse course. They would rather piss off 30+ million users or so to make a buck than be consumer friendly. That should be a red flag moving forward. You are going to pay more for ps plus, games, and you will like it or leave they dont care

Sam

Colin seems to think that if people buy digital games they don’t care about the option of buying physical, an idea made in complete vacancy of the issue.

Ben King

Recently yes

Josh Bennett

FYI muting people on Twitter is similar to the YouTube hide function. The user doesn’t know they’ve been muted. However I’m not sure if other users can still see their comments I think it just applies to the person who muted you.

TheWubbz

The controversy has already died down lol. News moves faster than ever in this day and age. Sony is obviously not going to change course and the majority of gamers complaining are going to look like that MW2 Steam community.

ChaosZwei+5

The absolute tragedy of ID making arguably their best work with revelations then immediately being gutted is one of the saddest things to happen to gaming in awhile

NeighBuRrR

So that reporting about ID was a bit fabricated huh

BigDumbStupidIdiot

I don't really buy physical anymore but having the option is important. Retail and secondary markets having variable pricing keeps the hobby affordable and digital storefronts more honest with their pricing.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Yeah. They said they are now back to the size they were when they made DOOM 2016. Not every layoff is a tragedy. We all know there are redundant employees at every place. Maybe they just trimmed the fat. I'm not gonna get up in arms about it.

Vladimir Grabbinmikov

The new biggest blunder from Xbox is not releasing black ops 2 port ON Xbox. ABSOLUTELY INSANE. THEY OWN THE BRAND AND NEED MONEY FROM THIS IP. This is arguably the best cod multiplayer. It’s on sale for $20 AND another $10 for all DLC on ps4 and 5 until early August. (This is a perfectly fine deal considering we got dedicated servers which fixes a lot of the cheating problem and it’s a better looking game. And it’s great great great btw. This style of cod is so much better)

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Not surprised everyone over reacted and jumped down Asha throat. Pause. XBOX was severely bloated and had to be trimmed down to be remotely profitable

ChaosZwei+5

Chris has to tell Colin to stop saying so many slurs classic sacred symbols right here

Jordan campos

It’s my actual 10 year anniversary with my wife. I make her listed to the show on long car rides. That’s all I have to add.

Cai

As someone from England, anyone upset by the european slander is being a bit of a snowflake. Sorry.

Walk Forward Cutscene

US/UK Xbox Live trash talk was peak and we should emulate that as much as possible in modern society

Walk Forward Cutscene

Love ID, but the PC community didn’t show up for the Dark Ages. Colin will blame GamePass like he always does, but I think a lot of people incorrectly assumed they’d need a monster GPU for the mandatory ray tracing. It was also full price when Oblivion Remaster and E33 had just released for $50.

Josh Bennett

I think the reason the gaming industry gets a lot of support behind devs when they get laid off compared to other industries is cause it’s kind of the only industry that has fans. Outside of celebrities, musicians and Athletes. I can’t really think of another industry that has fans that is made up of normal people who face lay offs. I work in manufacturing for the semiconductor industry and we have lay offs all the time. I’ve personally been laid off 3 times. But I don’t have anyone crying over me when it happens cause no one cares about what I do. But we do care about all the studios that make our favorite games. I do agree it is kinda cringe how the internet comes out the wood work for devs (especially content creators) but it is what it is.

Cai

Exactly! The best thing about it is that’s it’s all entirely impersonal. Just wildly exaggerated stereotypes about things neither side understands fully. All in good fun.

ChaosZwei+5

New gears is gonna cost 500 million dollars dark ages was in no way a flop it did basically the same steam numbers as 2016. Even if it didn't make much of a profit you don't gut ID one of the most important game studios ever. Imagine if they just stopped making the Ferrari one day bc well the margins aren't as good as they could be. It's the principle of the matter Id tech is a prestige and historically significant piece of tech that has created gaming as we know it for decades now. Out of all of Xbox studios why them?

Frank G.

Sony won't admit that Don Matrick sized rake they stepped on.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Exactly. Its not even that other industries operate differently like Chris said. They all have the same trends just like the gaming industry. Like they overextended during covid or other competitors came on the scene and you need to adapt or material pricing increases. Same exact problems. But nobody cares about the guys who build pallet shelving losing their jobs. Or the food processors. Or the forklift services. If you don't do a glamorous job, nobody cares...

Billy but not so Talented

Colin keeps saying this "Sony will always win the price argument" and as the initial opt in sure but most people it's the ease of use that keeps them on consoles. Within a year of no PS plus and sales on multiple storefronts you'll save 100s and that's been true for 10+ years.

Addison117

Doom eternal did not launch in game pass, it released in March and was added to game pass in October that year.

Wayde

Its hilarious, how you guys don't get the code in a box. It is still going to end up being a massive split for sony This would be no different than having a rack full of playstation cards. The retailer is going to get nothing really

SL

Turns out the ‘gutting’ was overstated. They’re back to the size they were for 2016 and will likely bring more people on board as development winds up on their next project.

Big Devin Energy

Although “chinks in the armor” is a completely valid and appropriate use in this context. That was hilarious when Chris cut him off hahah

Big Devin Energy

“Chinks in the armor” actually isn’t a slur at all. But it just sounds the same and will get flagged and demonetized haha

Jewelbox

The issue with the always online stuff for a lot of people is not specifically lacking an internet connection, it is lacking a RELIABLE internet connection with decent download and upload speeds. I used to live in a far more remote location where temporary outages were common. There is nothing quite like having a gaming session interrupted by a random disconnect message or being unceremoniously kicked back to the main menu. All this to say there are still remote parts of the developed world, even relatively affluent parts, with terrible internet infrastructure. Even satellite solutions such as starlink come with their own drawbacks such as being borderline unusable in locations with significant tree coverage, not to mention the tenancy for the panel to overheat in warmer climates.

Pan Ic

I exercised free will and skipped the physical media part.

Ryan

*anyone brings up any remote criticism against any of Sonys anti-consumer practices* Colin: SONYYYYY GET ME BEHIND ME

Walk Forward Cutscene

You’re adding 100 million to the Tom Henderson rumor, who only put the 400m out there because he was butthurt about E-Day not coming to PS5. This is the same Tom Henderson who has reported on Ubisoft games for years and has never reported a budget for one of their games. So he’s either been running cover for Ubisoft this entire time, or I’m supposed to believe that he has an ultimate source at Microsoft when that’s not been his traditional beat.

ChaosZwei+5

400 mil is still ridiculous for a a dude bro cover shooter

Jack Johnson

I honestly think Sony and Microsoft should take notes from you Colin. It’s quite shocking at how incompetent they both come across when you reeling off all these possible solutions.

Walk Forward Cutscene

If you believe that number, I have a Sony liver service game to sell you

Stanley Stoopish

Colin getting more upset about an Xbox blunder than anything Sony has done in the last 6 years is so expected LOL.

Ctrl+Alt+Del Pete

You need to D. E. N. N. I. S(eparate Entirely) Sony.

C

Colin, to post “Like a majority of its audience, I don't care if PlayStation supports physical media” (regardless of what you say after) is absolutely baffling to me. Brother, do you not realise you could be in a completely different situation right now if you didn’t have contacts? Forget about Sony needing to fix their online security, etc, absolutely anything could happen that could impact your account in the future. You could lose 1000s of dollars spent on games. How can you not see how removing physical from the equation is a massive issue?

Mason M

Best option for physical game buyers is leave PS and go buy digital games on PC like that makes sense

Wayde

I think you just proved that a lot of people don't understand the argument. Pc has multiple storefronts including gog which let's you own the game. The options and preservation are key reason why physical owners are pissed at sony.

Avery Illies

Thank you LSM for reading my question. I greatly appreciate it.

JL

The id software rant from you guys was so cathartic, thank you. I’m gutted by what was done to them.

NeO JD

Chris, one time use toilet paper then wet wipes. Another use wet wipes followed by toilet paper. Then report back.

Walk Forward Cutscene

Gutted that they’re back to the same size they were before Doom 2016 and making another Doom game?

Ryan Eichler

My pushback on the idea that Microsoft should have forced their devs to use an engine they aren’t familiar with is that it caused trouble for BioWare at EA. They were forced to use DICE’s Frostbite engine, and the development woes for Anthem and Mass Effect Andromeda were well documented by Jason Schreier at the time. The creation engine, for example, is custom built for Bethesda Game Studio’s unparalleled level of environmental interactivity in RPGs. Whether you value that is subjective, but many fans do (they haven’t shipped a game with a metacritic score below 80 since before 2003s Morrowind).

SL

It makes sense because PC is not a closed ecosystem. You have multiple storefronts.

SL

It turns out its not as bad as they thought at the time of the rant. But it was definitely a good one!

Frank G.

You know who should of really been gutted worse than ID software. Halo fucken studios, place is a cesspool and a fiasco of game management and production. Where is that bloodbath.

SlickMick

I’m switching to steam. Fuck PlayStation for wasting naughty dogs, time, and closing blue point. And FUCK Xbox for ruining ID.

Jeffry311

For those that bought a PS5 w/ the disc drive, all they had to do was say “PS5 is the last Playstation with physical discs. The next generation will be all digital.” The fact that they decided to discontinue physical games in the middle of a console generation that has a f-ing disc drive is the biggest asshole move ever.

Josephine

Sony hasn’t thrown a bone to their fans since Astrobot. It’s a cascade of bad news. They’ve ignored their IPs, can’t get a Bloodborne Remastered out, closed Bluepoint, are still deep in GaaS with a new Horizon multiplayer, it’s been a disaster. If it wasn’t for GT7, my PS5 would feel like just a generic non branded tower pc. Nothing is exciting and they’ve raised the fanbase cynicism to the highest levels.

Save The Game Media

Depends why they were physical - if it’s because the discs were cheaper then it does make sense. Stay on PS5 where PlayStation now has complete control over game prices or Go to PC where you can get games on Steam, EGS, GOG or buy keys on legit sites like Fanatical, Gamesbillet, Gamesplanet and more which ensures price competition Also, PC offers DRM free games so you have better ownership

Yet

But that’s literally what you’re voting with your wallet ? So how would Sony know

Sam

I’m not ‘voting anything with my wallet’. I’m buying games as I always have, however I want. The removal of physical tightens the grip on digital which raises prices everywhere, even if that wasn’t an issue you can still be open minded that other people enjoy the physical aspect of game collecting and you want that to continue for them. Digital games lower costs for Sony, not for me or you. Colin often uses digital data that is just wrong anyway, I’m surprised how he admitted fault in not caring for the security issues at PlayStation until it affected him and then the very next issue doesn’t affect him and he remains ignorant once more, fascinating.

Yet

Thinking is great but companies listen to purchases not thoughts. Play steam with GeForce on any laptop if you want steam with no pc

Tyler mitchell

You've danced around what the commentor asked. I had a bakery I loved going to. I thought it was the best in town. But then I moved to the other side of town and maybe only went back there 3 times in total compared to 4 days a week I used to go. Then one day I drove past and it was gone. I was sad and even a little angered at how this could have happened. Then I realized I must have been part of the problem. I didn't like it, but it was true. I used to buy everything physically. Then I switched to buying only exclusives physically because I went from PlayStation to Steam. I can't be mad the option is going away when I stopped showing up to buy the product.

Sam

I think you’re confusing me liking baked goods with me being responsible for opening a bakery? Consumers aren’t to blame for PlayStations anti-consumer moves, PlayStation are. You aren’t ‘part of any problem’ you decide to buy games digitally.

Joe B

Im sorry but Doom The Dark Ages released day 1 on Playstation and sold less than 1 million copies total for all platforms. Idk how were gonna blame Game Pass for the lack of sales on a seperate platform with over 120 million players.

Save The Game Media

No mention or discussion about Ninja Theory during the Xbox section was a little strange - they just announced a new game coming to PS5 and has been sold as well

DIS-Bee

Game streams are lame. Colin ranting is much better

Save The Game Media

Ninja Theory have a bigger history with PlayStation than Undead Labs which has none though

Gooch Gobbler

.......wtf are they doing. I am slowly playing all the cod campaigns on gamepass. Granted these were going to be some of the last I play as I remember them them best but damn what a baffling decision

Gooch Gobbler

I mean yeah, would have loved to see different types of games for them. The John Wick game sounds sick, so would love for them to be a multi project studio and not make another DOOM or DOOM style type game next (though we get another eventually)

Robbie (DatLie)

The people who write in to this show is genuinely retarded. As a physical gamer, I will continue to harass and annoy PlayStation. I spend more than 95 percent of people on games, and gaming is what I do most of the time. I’m well off and don’t have anything else to do but enjoy gaming. Sony might not care, it they are losing 2-3 thousand dollars a year from me not buying their games new anymore. I played literally everything the put out even Concord and Concrete Genie. Now fuck Sony. My purchase habits have changed. All my physical purchases will come via used and I won’t buy anything digital. Even canceled my Ps Plus after 16 years.

Walk Forward Cutscene

After finishing Revelations, I absolutely want them to keep making Doom-style games.

Walk Forward Cutscene

You paid extra for another version that’s been hacked already. Hope you had fun with it over the weekend!

C

Chris is spot on about the PS6 having to make a case. The PS6 having faster load times / improved graphics won’t cut it for me, the loss of physical media / possibility of no backwards compatibility (physical) makes it almost redundant to me, the lack of first party games on PS5 suggests it will follow the same course on PS6 and the price apparently going to hit close to €1000 makes it an almost certainty that I will not be buying it. To be honest, I don’t know why anyone would look at it with those negatives and say “can’t wait for it”.

J.P. MELE

That’s a REALLY long time on “physical discs.” It’s an important topic but let’s not beat a dead horse.

They Now Call Me UNC.

Colin giving the LSM audience a reality check will always be entertaining.

Marco Maluf

Colin is so disconnected when he talks about the end of physical media, believing that fixing the digital market would be enough just shows how far from the reality he is on this matter, Sony is just the complete opposite of what they were on the ps4 era, so much action against their consumers, I will do everything I can now to purchase physical media from now on….
