After roughly half-a-dozen episodes of unfortunate absence, we're pleased to welcome Dustin back to the fold, and just in the nick of time at that. A trio of interesting stories have bubbled to the surface over the past week worth examining, and they require further inquiry from the whole cast. For starters, Sony's financials show a stagnant (albeit perfectly healthy) PlayStation brand, as PS5 marches ever-slower towards 100 million units sold. And then there's Electronic Arts, the pioneering American publisher that sold-out to a wealthy foreign interest, with untold ramifications on the other side of the biggest-ever leveraged buyout in human history. Finally, we come to Netflix and Rockstar, who have teamed-up for what can only be described as a unique approach towards showcasing Grand Theft Auto VI, one (perhaps not surprisingly) some people aren't thrilled about. Among other news (and other nonsense), we also get into your listener submissions, as we do each week. How will MLB: The Show 27 be affected next year by what appears to be an inevitable work stoppage in professional baseball? Is there any workable idea for a framework surrounding the second-hand buying, selling, and trading of digital games? Could Sony blunt PlayStation 6's inevitably-high cost by taking a page from Xbox's book and offering hardware on long-term payment plans? Has Colin been saying "beaucoup bucks" wrong, or does one listener simply not know his French?

Return of the Dusty King! Welcome back my dude 🙌

Monkey D Luffy

Dustin coming back is like when your older brother comes back from school. You love your parents (Colin/Chris). But your brother. He the cool one. Your parents can just be embarrassing sometimes.

Bogey

And if you ain’t a ho, get up out my trap hoouuse

Trevor

GET UP OUT MY TRAP HOUUUUUSE 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️

TheWubbz

Return of the Weeb (affectionate)

Drew

Soooo good to have Dustin back

KYisLife

Colin I think the old name “No Taxation” makes people think you’re laissez faire about capitalism and companies

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Glad my stupid fucking inquiry created the "Fwee Mawket" voice. I'll stand down now

StewDog

Not showing up on RSS feeds for me again. This happened last week too! Weird because every other LSM show worked just fine all week

Hozi

My little Hana is now at the 2 month mark and I can confirm, it is a bit boring while you wait for them to grow. (And yes, my little one is have gas issues as well)

Whiner

Some of y’all are getting a little TOO upset about these games. Rooting for a game to fail because you don’t like the marketing strategy is idiotic. Some of y’all gotta get a grip Jesus Christ.

Justin G

Dustin the only unfortunate thing about having an infant (especially your first born). You don’t really miss the baby days until the baby days are long gone. Sure all stages are great in their own right. But there’s something magical about that first year plus. You just don’t know it until you’re way past it unfortunately. Soak it up!

Tyler Kaminski

Anyone else having issues with the Spotify show? It’s not playing for me. It goes in for a second, and pauses. Only this episode for me, and I rebooted it.

Kaleb

You are correct it is the french phrase for a lot. In the south, specifically new orleans to lafayette LA, we pronounce it “boo-coo”. No idea if this is correct pronunciation or if we’re all just backwater.

Gal Sharpton

In order to have Irish twins they would need to have sex 3 months after birth. I would know from experience. 360 days a part. Git gud.

Elliott

Spotify link seems corrupted

Lockmort

It's up but there's an issue with Spotify. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Namistai25

I am also having issues with the RSS in Spotify for this episode, but Dustin being back ♥️. I am listening here

Dylbun

Colin Moriarty just used a Bobby Shmurda lyric as a sacred symbols title and you’re blackpilling?

Whiner

A lot of the weird outcry in the PlayStation community just comes from the Xbox refugees that migrated after the Xbox one incident and subsequent disasters.

Izzy Smalls

Dave Batista couldnt be a more perfect pick to be cast as Kratos. His most famous role is an enraged powerhouse with red tats, a dead wife/daugter, 2 blades on a quest for revenge. In fact im 100% convinced Drax was redesigned off of Kratos' look. As a old comicbook nerd i remember Drax had a completely different look in the 90s before GOW came out. I think our boy Jaffe should get some lawyers and have them take a look.

Sonnie

Spotify episode is broken 😅

Sonnie

Same!

James Stanbury

Me too, the episode doesn’t even appear under Podcasts > Following > Latest Episodes either.

KYisLife

Mine all got fun starting at six months

Lockmort

There's an issue with Spotify. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Jason Bolla

Colin said Onimusha correctly 😂 Great episode.

Addison117

Genuinely the last 6 or so months has really killed my interest in keeping in the conversation of games. From this GTA 6 marketing to everyone complaining about Halo, I fear the rage baiters have won. At this point I just get the games I want and I like them or don't and move on.

Jeff in NOLA

We do things a bit different down here in New Orleans … (I’m in a suburb )

Big Devin Energy

Dustin yeah my son was born in September and now’s he’s 11 months old. They’re a useless pet to keep alive for the first 6 months then they start giving back with cuteness and cuddles. Rub that tummy hard and help him push those farts out. That’s what we do for baby Rowan here!

Michael Hebert

Well, it was nice while it lasted. Gotta go back to fast forwarding a third of the episode.

Big Devin Energy

Gotta take Colin to task here in saying “I don’t give a fuck about companies” but last week bagging on Xbox fans for not caring about the health of the company by abusing their GamePass refund policy. WHICH IS IT COLIN? Lol

Addison117

I think a conversation between Colin and damnit jeff would be interesting, both have different views on the modding/homebrew scene.

Big Devin Energy

Colin - I did extensive research on this after after children and how stupid and useless they are for years - I’m like how did the human race survive? And best described it made total sense… Babies are born into culture and animals are born into nature. In nature survival is key, so they adapt much quicker. But for humans they’re born into a village of humans and families and they soak up more about society and sociology and love and human connection than they are concerned about food and survival. They get fed and held - they don’t give a fuck. lol

Big Devin Energy

Trevor / I am a gaming dad and you’re totally correct about energy - the key is having mindless games to play when the gears are down - and having a more intense game ready for weekends or holidays etc.

Dante B

There is an obvious distinction between feeling sympathy for companies and wanting something you are a fan of to succeed with the explicit goal of ensuring that you get more of the things you love.

Big Devin Energy

Dustin said GRODY. This is the best episode ever lol

Simon

Chris casually dropping the premise of 'BABY Geniuses'

Deon

Colin you haven’t always played like that, you said your favorite system was NES the NES didn’t have trophies or achievements

lazer_josh

Fwee mawket voice 🤣🤣🤣🤣

lazer_josh

You did something 👍

David Seger

Yay... another physical media slog followed by an "oh no it's AI" discussion. Yaaaaaawn

Jewelbox

RE: The Shift Up AI story. It seems cultural differences have a large part to play but East Asian companies are by no means the only companies embracing AI. While, as Chris said, the profit motive broadly is also a significant driver for mass adoption of AI in the creative fields. I think an issue that kind of flies under the radar with this isn't a broader systemic or cultural one. I think many of these studios don't actually have "incredible artistic talent." There are certainly creative people at the studio but I'd hazard a guess that the people in positions of creative power at these studios, and even likely a large number of the artists at the lower ranks, are not incredibly creative. Many people who I know who work in the creative space do not have a burning desire to express themselves, they do not have a depth of knowledge and love for the medium, they do not have a love or passion for art, craft or storytelling outside their own niche interest , let alone their chosen medium. A lot of these people were nerds who liked nerdy things and indulged in nerdy activities such as drawing fan art, and saw that as a skill to develop to make a living. I know people in both the film and game industry, and it always strikes me just how narrow many of their views on their art form actually are. For those working in the film industry, their favourite films are the social networks and fight clubs, and they certainly haven't seen many films made before the 80s. They can explain technically why a shot works but they don't actually have original thoughts on the medium they have devoted their life too. And, I think most damning of all, they do not have many real cultural reference points outside of their chosen niche of film. This is a long roundabout way of saying that I bet there are a lot of people at Shift Up, as with many other companies in the creative space, that are technically proficient at their craft and have videogames as their main hobby, but really don't actually love or respect the art form. You probably have artists on that team that came up drawing fan art and playing RPGs and gacha games, but when pressed , do not actually have a breadth of knowledge, nor any original thoughts about the medium outside of that. If this is your approach to the medium you supposedly love, coupled with broader cultural influences and the profit motive, it's small wonder why these larger studios embrace AI. I've played Nikke, I've played Stellar Blade, these are games whose main creatives come across as nerds who like nerdy anime and sci fi things. They seem like they are made by fans, not creatives.

Yall love a walled garden

Ray

I had so many Trump supporters around me believing him about tariffs and that the consumer isn't the one that pays the tax. Blows my mind how much the average person doesn't even research / follow up on info they hear about.

Taylor Martin

So true. Was always tired and stressed out when my first was a baby and early toddler. Looking back I yearn to re-experience those little laughs and that baby voice.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

I agree that people are getting far too abrasive but at the same time I can understand it. When was the last piece of good news we got from this industry? Literally every week its what is being taken away now, what price is going to increase, how many are getting laid off, what feature is being discontinued. We never get ANYTHING positive from these companies anymore. So as much as I wish for positivity from people, I totally understand why people are upset these days.

NeO JD

I honestly want you guys to play the original Halo and then play Campaign Evolved back to back so you can really see how much better this new version is. BOTH are hard in Heroic, but the new one is actually easier overall.

Yet

Them complaining about AI is like hearing a boomer tell me he used to use a slide rule and calculators are cheating

Yet

Personally I could care less about AI use, it’s just the way it’s generated via data centers harming the environment that I dislike Embrace da future old men

Jewelbox

I'm not making a defense of AI. Generative AI is just the latest tool sapping the "aura" (not in the modern meaning) from art. It's the end point of mechanical reproduction, it devalues artwork entirely. Art should not be 'democratized,' it should take skill, years of hard work, passion and study to make good art. Culturally, we have devalued art and craft so much in favour of productivity and profit that of course generative AI is booming. Broader systemic issues helped make this the perfect environment for generative AI, but the average person can't be excused entirely. People hoovered up slop TV, watched slop shorts, and bought slop art. AI slop is just one step further to this productivity over effort and passion oblivion.

Josh Manzanares

I'm feeling a lot like Dustin about Campaign Evolved. I've actually started playing a few missions in combat evolved on the OG Xbox while playing through campaign and I really believe the original is better

zepplinmike

Whenever "free markets" come up on here and often elsewhere, there's quite a lot of straw men thrown around. To be in favor of free market ideas isn't to "care about companies," it means you care about competition, a vibrant market, and individual choice. Saying "I'm a Capitalist" actually far more implies being in the camp for big business in modern political discourse. In fact, a major criticism from that perspective towards government regulation is that big companies often favor major regulations on themselves because then they're the only ones who can afford to comply, and that prevents new competitors. Also, saying "I'm for free markets" doesn't imply being an absolutist. Get 20 free market libertarians in a room and you'll get 20 people arguing with each other about what government regulation is too much and what is a valid exception. Most think government plays a key role in preventing fraud and enforcing contracts and many make much broader exceptions. Friedrich Hayek is one of the leading free market thinkers of all time and he favored a single-payer health care system. All that said, I do think it's fine to mock people who thoughtlessly just scream "free markets!" at people without any actual argument behind them. I am highly skeptical people like that actually understand any of the theory or thought behind free market ideas. Also, I personally agree with Colin that it's appropriate to look into consumer rights with digital goods, especially considering all of these markets are highly regulated as it is.

Save The Game Media

Except calculators aren’t producing a creative outcome. It’s producing a quantifiable result that will always be the same if you enter the same information. If you can’t see the difference between that and a creative endeavor, that’s on you. But don’t act like others are crazy for rejecting it

Walk Forward Cutscene

And so many liberals believe that corporate/property/income taxes aren’t passed onto the consumer as well.

Ray

I agree. But Trump himself had said that the country / business where the goods originated would pay the tax. My point was just pointing out how idiotic it was to believe him when it's something so easy to google/verify.

Spawn-in Games

Stop crying about AI, its so fuckin boring lol

Save The Game Media

Why would Sony/Xbox ever allow a digital marketplace for people to sell digital games? Even if they got a cut - if the user set the price, they’d make less money… Users would never buy from the Xbox/PS store anymore - they’d only go to this user marketplace. Why would Xbox want 50% of a user selling their license for $10 as opposed to 70% of making you buy it on their store for $20 It makes no sense. Dustin talking about lending licenses for 2 weeks is literally what Nintendo does with their virtual game card game share system…

Josh Bennett

Just an fyi about the leasing idea of a ps6. The PlayStation store already has the option to use Klarna to split payments.

Jacob Lesperance

Don't forget to add Spider-Man to the lost of Sony movies/shows. Best Spider-Man to date! 1.60 billion in 10 days, lol.

John Lansford

All this baby talk this episode, I was a surgeon’s assistant, specifically in labor and delivery, through the end of Covid. To quote, a man who delivered 3% of the total population of Colorado Springs: “ The vagina is very forgiving.“

PixelJunkie76

I may be looking into this too much. The Playstation Blog says "physical game discs" are ending production. Could they switch, pun unintentional, to cartridges like Nintendo?

Beef Burka

I know you didn't just completely dismiss the sale of digital games, but for the statement that "figuring out digital ownership makes the fight for physical games moot" to be remotely true, then being able to recoup value by selling your games, and being able to buy games at a lower price from a second hand market has to also be possible. Of course the second hand market is bad for Sony's bottom line. Of course Sony doesn't "care" about people who buy used games. They've demonstrated they don't really care for INDIVIDUAL people who buy a bunch of new games either, or else Colin wouldn't have had to use the back channels to get his account returned so quickly. This is why we shouldn't care about Sony either.

Surge!

Welcome back Dustin, and congrats on the baby. Contrary to my write-in on the thread, I think procreation might actually be a good thing. I can see a net positive gained from it lol.

Aaron Winkels

I just want the record to state, that at 40:41, Dustin confidently stated "there's people that have babies in deserts, and I'm not saying that's a good thing..."

Gooch Gobbler

yeah the write in called in "anti-consumer".....it's an add bro. Quit being so thirsty to be marketed to

Gooch Gobbler

let's just keep giving the companies more tax breaks then. Why make them pay a dime? It always trickles down right?

Gooch Gobbler

correct is Bow Coo, "boo" sound in french is spelled "bou". People also say beau to refer to someone's partner

Wayde

Used games is a way to get people into the market. I wouldn't be a gamer today that spends 2k a year or more if not for the used market that got me into the industry as a kid. My parents couldn't afford new games more than 1 for Christmas.

Benjamin Pope

Elden Ring came out when my son was a few months old.. safe to say I never finished it because I couldn't pause when it was needed. Good luck with gaming in your parenthood Dustin.
