PlayStation's dueling State of Play presentations -- one for western audiences and the other for its native Japanese territory -- hasn't quelled the ever-increasing animus for the brand in some corners. Though widely considered a weak showing (we rank it somewhere between a C and F, depending on which one of us you ask), there were still some great games worth discussing, and we'll do just that. New announcements included shark-eating sequel Maneater 2, an eastern take on New York City with Konami's Rhapsody in Scarlet, old-school bona fides in SlashZero, and the uniquely liminal World Phasebound Control Authority. Plus, release dates flowed for the likes of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Until Dawn 2, and Metro 2039, all excellent-looking titles. But underneath the surface, the same issues remain. Is Sony disconnected from the reality on the ground, or are we too busy misinterpreting the noise while dodging the signal? We discuss at length. Other news this week includes some Grand Theft Auto VI updates, the exit of Housemarque's co-founder, faux rumors of Square Enix going private, and more. Then, we wrap things up (as we always do) with listener inquiries. Do we believe the scuttlebutt out of Gamescom that Sony's development and publishing partners are upset with them? What do we think of the new website Video Games Critic? Does developer Bit Reactor furloughing staff indicate a future trend for sustainable game dev? Is Sacred Symbols the absolutely perfect podcast for the manic depressive?Timestamps:0:00:00 - Intro

Edit: After listening to the rest of the episode, I apologize. Looking forward to hearing more next week. You guys spent a whopping 11 minutes talking about the games you played? I know Summon Sign exists but man thats so brief. Anyway appreciate the show just voicing that I wouldn't mind you guys going a little more in depth. The show was much shorter than I was expecting. Which again totally fine, just feels like you guys rush through what youre playing but I want to hear you guys talk about what youre playing atleast 30-45 minutes. Wouldve loved to hear more from Colin on AW2 after all this time and more about Onimusha.

Michael Welter

Im guessing C from Colin, D from Dustin, F from Chris.

It was a pretty underwhelming State of Play for sure but tbh I'm not as offended by it as alot of people elsewhere seem to be. For one thing, there have already been 2 pretty great (imo) SoPs earlier this year - they're not all gonna be bangers, and this definitely felt like one of those "marketing obligation" streams. Once I saw the early start (along with the Japan-focused SoP), as well as FF7 Revelation confirmed to be the closer, I knew to keep expectations pretty low and not to expect any surprises here. I'd said for a while I thought Intergalactic would show up in September - but knew that wouldn't happen when I saw this timing, and when FF7 is the closer instead (at this point it must be being held for the Game Awards). Other things like Laufey or Kena also were strangely missing, so maybe they're being held for December also. Maybe the worst part about it though was the pacing and how the Japan one dragged with the interviews - they really should have separated these out. Despite all that, there were still some good things shown - I'm more excited for Until Dawn now and it's not far away, and we've got the Revelation date locked in too. I guess the reason why I'm not overly annoyed by this is that despite this being a poor show - the games are still coming ultimately, and the next 6 months plus especially are going to be incredible in that sense (including the 1st party output which has gradually improved a lot - 2026 and 2027 look very solid). We all love these hype showcases of trailers showing off games, but this poor State of Play doesn't suddenly mean we're going to be at a loss of things to actually play - the complete opposite in fact. I also think a factor at this stage is that PlayStation are probably holding back new game reveals for anything coming out 2028+, as I assume they'll want to reserve these to announce alongside the PS6 (whenever that happens).

BigDumbStupidIdiot

The only reason that SoP isn't F tier is because that's the Concord tier. Nothing will ever be as bad as the Concord State of Play

Dustin Furman

It would have been longer but I had to hop off the show to hide in my basement from 80 mph winds. -Dustin

Michael Welter

OH shit ok. Thanks for the context and glad you and the family are ok.

AllTooEasy_

Sometimes it feels like being a host on Sacred Symbols is an inconvience for Chris.

Michael Welter

Really sorry to hear about Treble, Colin and Micah. Hope everything gets figured out.

Frank G.

So glad I overslept the state of play everything was regurgitated. I don't care about "obligations " they were obviously trying to gain some brownie points with fans. Or else they wouldn't of opened with the Resident evil movie clip. This company is so in the fucken doghouse, and they need to stop pretending that they aren't.

My brother is a sports savant and has played Madden each consecutive year since the 90s. He’s kind of disavowed EA made sports games because in recent years, especially playing NCAA football, the games are often buggy and busted. By comparison, The Show and 2K are much, much better products.

An optimistic Bears fan

Colin’s frustration with the podcast host who constantly interrupts the cohost is quite amusing, even though I say that with all due respect. If you listen back to that section, you’ll notice how long Colin speaks and how many times he cuts one of the cohosts off. I couldn’t help but laugh. I’ve been a fan since Beyond and even flew out to KFL2 just to see Colin. But boy, oh boy, does he love to talk!

Ryan

It’s exhausting having to come up with games to pretend you’re playing each week

Every action in life Chris finds to be an inconvenience - what do you mean putting mayo on a sandwich is "too much work".

In reference to the digital foundry quote, I think this is a misinterpretation of what was said. I believe what he meant was, not that some publishers see a majority of sales on physical games but rather that a majority of publishers themselves still see a return on physical. Maybe not a big return but a return nonetheless.

Adam Martinez

Hard to be excited about Playstation right now.

ChaosZwei+5

Steam reviews are all I really care about besides a select few YouTube critics I like. It's even more useful now that you can see pc specs in the reviews and find equivalent experiences to what your own would be. As a gamer they are the most useful and helpful in my experience.

ChaosZwei+5

Unfortunately zero company is buggy and unoptimized as hell. Even once that's all patched up it's watered down from xcom in many small ways that make it hard to recommend when the better cheaper alternative is right there. The addition of pointless third person sections is one of the most baffling inclusions I've seen in a game in a minute just infinitely worse than the clean menu navigation of xcom 1 and 2 for out of mission portions.

Dante B

If not this one, I honestly don’t know what it would take for Colin to give a State of Play less than a C.

Justin 24Hr

Did Colin not talk about his new game on purpose or was that from the sleep deprivation?

zepplinmike

Couldn’t disagree more. I love the cinematic and world immersion aspects and think they’re a great evolution of XCOM and Midnight Suns.

zepplinmike

I am 100% with Colin on the dry sandwiches controversy. Ridiculous.

ChaosZwei+5

Why should a tactics game have tons of cutscenes and walking sections? That's not why you're here. I wouldn't call attempts to look more like other games an evolution. It's still a fun game and the actual missions are a great time. But like I said originally it's hard to recommend not that it's garbage most games aren't garbage.

ChaosZwei+5

You can never expect to see interesting stuff at showcases that's just how it is even when they're good it's all surface level games that are only there bc they appeal to general audiences

They Now Call Me UNC.

I agree with Colin. If Sony were considering reversing course, why would they wait so much time? Meanwhile everyone dog piles and burns bridges with the brand. It a shame they’ve chosen this path but karma is a bitch…

we are all dogs locked in god's hot car

Colin, you gotta play the Alan Wake 2 DLC's. Night Springs is pretty short and super fun, and the Lake House is a direct lead in to Control Resonant much the same as the AWE DLC for Control was a direct lead in to Alan Wake 2. I know it's a busy time but if not now at some point you owe it to yourself to play the Final Draft as well, it doesn't make huge changes but personally I find the ending and extra lore worth it.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

I've been playing Star Wars Zero Company and it is fantastic. From what I understand it is selling quite well. No doubt that team will be back with another game. There was most likely a lot riding on the success of the game since it is a licensed property but I would be surprised and dumbfounded if these guys are not given another project after making such a gem.

Johnny Lamotte

Even Jaffe agrees now. I think Colin owes us all an apology for calling us “grifters” for saying Sony makes ugly women and stupid stories.

zepplinmike

The cutscenes and walking sections greatly enhance the Star Wars of it all. Why play a Star Wars game if not for the Star Wars elements? That’s not why you’re here. In seriousness I kind of see your argument as being like the fans of classic Fire Emblem who just want tactical battles with brief story interludes, whereas Three Houses is by far the most popular game in the series with its extreme emphasis on story and social activities. Personally I could never get into the classic games but I loved Three Houses even if the tactical battles weren’t as great as others in the series. Emphasis on characters, story, and setting can go a long way toward enhancing the context and immersion of any gameplay loop.

Evan Westendorf

Chris arguing that adding a topping to a sandwich is too much work is so maddeningly lazy. If youve waited so long between meals that you absolutely cannot wait another 10 seconds before devouring it, maybe look inward lol

Evan Westendorf

I can also guarantee he thinks other people are lazy for not doing something that takes way more effort than adding mayo to a sandwich.

Casey Cieslikowski

3 hours lol come on man??? The streaming is starting to affect the podcast negatively.

You guys are sleeping on Crimson Desert. For me so far it's my game of the year. People hate on it because of the controls which are in my opinion similar to GTA or RDR where your characters have weight to them. It took me a few hours to get the hang of but once you do the game is amazing. Crimson Desert is a game you cannot get bored of. It feeds my ADHD addled mind. Pearl Abyss especially has been so responsive to the player base, they update the game more than any other developer I'm aware of. They do as much in one month as some developers in a year, and they should be commended for it. The content they put out is non-stop. It's similar to CD Project turning around the bumpy release of Cyberpunk. Given how much the game has changed i really think it would serve the show to have at least one of you give it a chance. Sorry, I just had to say something because of the reaction you have whenever the game is mentioned. I'm telling you it's top in the charts for a reason. The only downside is the fact that it's a game that once you get into it becomes all time consuming. Thanks for hearing me out CDC and just think about.

DIS-Bee

No may-nayze? Crazy

TheWubbz

Colin with the terrible take on them changing Mega Man 12’s name. If you want this franchise to grow and get the attention it deserves it’s going to need some new fans. You can’t lament the lack of triple A mega man games but also be like why would anyone be interested in this if they didn’t play the last 11+ games

Austin Evans

The “I wonder what they are holding for ps6 “comment is insane. I buy a PS for the Sony made games, if the ps5 trend continues, they are holding nothing for ps6. If they are holding out for ps6 at this point, what a lack luster generation for Sony first party, its been great for third party, but Sony first party is why I buy the system and this gen has been such a waste due to their disappointing live service push .

NeonAstra

Does anyone have any examples of the "meltdown" Colin was talking about over the new review site? Most of the people I've seen who have been against it seem to offer calm, valid critiques.

Ryan Harvey

I just wanna say when you choose not to discuss a game that you’re excited for I find it really disappointing. I was the most excited about Final Fantasy VII Revelation and I know you guys are too. But it’s happened often that new marketing material comes out for the series and you guys don’t cover it after a certain point. You guys are free to do the show however of course. I’m just always disappointed when you guys just opt out of discussing things like that…

Scroll around Bluesky a bit if you want to subject yourself to that. But don’t be disingenuous and pretend it doesn’t exist

NeonAstra

Can you point to the part of the post where I said it didn't exist? I asked a question for examples, and apparently there should be plenty. I searched his name and his site on BS and most of the posts were criticizing him/the site for fair reasons. There were a few meltdown tier posts but I had to go out of my way to find them. So why do the few outshine the vast majority that have legit gripes?

Pan Ic

I didnt find anything heinous

Virgin Barry

They’re calling it the most American podcast segment ever when Colin melts down about the state of fast food for 20 minutes

PairOfShuse

Good episode overall. Only feedback I have, honestly, I feel like Chris kind of killed the vibe of the show. Not going to tell him what he likes and doesn’t like obviously, but anything anime looking got instant criticism. I just find it sort of hypocritical to do that yet say someone can’t think Intergalactic looks awful from a trailer. I actually agree with Chris instantly not liking something anime looking if he doesn’t like it. I just don’t think if someone does the same thing with Naughty Dog because they don’t like the aesthetic they are going for, that they should be made to feel like their opinion is invalid. But overall like I said, great show

DeadMail

Tragic that Colin and Chris missed Dustin’s raw joke 24 min in

Tommy the sniper

I kinda hope the next PlayStation completely bombs to be honest, it likely won’t but the way Sony and PlayStation have been lately I don’t think they deserve half of the success they have had this generation.

Addison117

I'm very interested in the game and it does look like it would occupy months of time but I think the fact they do keep adding stuff and updating it is why people like me are just waiting, when it done and they say no more new content that's when I will jump in.

Pan Ic

Every game generic looking, female mc and some bs

Justin G

What proof do we have that this is even a thing?

The Incredible Shulk

I’ve tried playing Alan Wake 2 no less than 4 times. Every time, I get to the mind palace board thing, and something breaks in my brain and I just stop playing. Definitely a ME problem, but something about it really turns me off

Daniel

lol, do you guys even like this show.

AllTooEasy_

I do actually very much so. I’m just pointing out the fact that Chris is constantly exhausted and genuinely comes across as bothered that they have to record the show.

Tristan Kimball

Searching “What are the numbers on gasoline?” had me laughing my ass off. Moments like that are why I love this show.

Ryan

Only gaming podcast I have listened to for 6 years. It’s just a very funny and obvious thing to point out lol

Save The Game Media

The Alan Wake 2 DLC is a must play - they’re short as well Colin

Save The Game Media

Chris - Plague Tale is short. Knock it our, it’s amazing

Poopy Butt Stinky Pants

I don't think they're going to stop updating the game. From what I've gathered about what they've said, it seems like they have a 10 year road map. It's like fortnite, I will be constantly updated for years to come.

RE: 3D Mega Man... What about that Armature (former Retro devs) created one from years ago? I think it was called Maverick Hunter. That looked like an interesting take on the series almost two decades ago.

I find it amusing how Colin is adamant about people not going to xbox, if they keep what they’re doing, I am definitely keeping my ps5 and buying a xbox/pc machine, so yes, we have somewhere else to go Colin, this mentality of yours is just Sony’s nowadays remember, “arrogance precedes the fall” and sony is going this path again
