Defining Duke, Episode 297 | PlayStation Just Lost Hideo Kojima To XBOX... (Patreon)

In the wee hours of the night, an absolute stunner landed. Prolific and beloved game director, Hideo Kojima, has killed off his partnership with PlayStation for his upcoming action-espionage title, PHYSINT, and signed on with Xbox. According to the man himself, PlayStation was ready to cancel his game this June! After three months of searching, he found his partner in XBOX. It's a partnership where Kojima claims that they "share a common vision for the future" which says more than just about anything else within this next. Those who recall the PHYSINT announcement in 2024 will also remember that this was TV/movie deal as well. According to the XBOX Wire, they've got that too! So, what gives? Is this just a money play? Has Sony lost touch with optical wins when it was only last generation that they reaped the massive benefits of saving Kojima from Konami? What is XBOX's end goal in all of this? I feel like this was likely a financial decision. Death stranding 1 and 2 are great but they didn’t sell amazingly. Sony probably felt the level of investment Kojima was looking for wasn’t going to be worth it. Can’t completely blame them. Sony needs to start releasing games that make a profit. They’ve had too many misses financially

No doubt it'll be incredibly difficult for xbox to fight back but I think there's a small chance if xbox is patient (huge if) and makes the right moves. With the vast majority of each console's base being casuals and "ball and gun" gamers I don't know if these groups are as attached to their digital libraries as the we in the hardcore would be. You also factor in so many of the games they play having cross progression or being annualized titles, I can see them being the types that can be swayed to jump ship from ps to xbox if the marketing vibe shifts and if their friends start jumping as well

Look I love these guys. And this has been an awful year for PlayStation, maybe the worst in the history of the brand. But it took nearly a decade for Xbox fans to admit something was amiss, and we’re going to immediately say PlayStation fans are in denial if they’re not upset right now? Which I agree with btw - but come on. We only just now stopped trying to convince people Gamepass is sustainable and everything is going great over at MS.

Obviously we know very little about Physint but I always thought it would have more mainstream appeal than Death Stranding or OD. But I guess we’ll see

Just listened to Jason Schriers video on the situation. The game is way behind schedule and, Kojima was asking for 100's of millions more. Plus it looks like Sony will still get the game on Playstation, lol. Asha might have bought a lemon.

Totally agree and yeah it’s widespread. I’m upset about the move too but, at least in the eyes of PlayStation, it’s not some huge L. They didn’t “lose” him. He didn’t defect. They chose to dump him. Time will tell if that was the right call (Bloomberg reporting this morning seems to suggest that maybe it was, and no one wants to hear it)
