Stock and Bond | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 135

All anyone wants to talk about is the recent GameStop stock market fiasco. Well, fine! We'll do just that. Let's chat about capitalism, "the market," class, and much more, sifting down into the actual nitty-gritty: How did a dying brick-and-mortar video game store find itself at the center of one of the most memorable global financial stories in recent history? But there's other news, too, of course, specifically out of Denmark, where IO Interactive is doubling its headcount as it gears up for its post-Hitman foray into 007. What should we expect from Bond's digital revival? Plus: February's PS+ games have been revealed, Returnal has been delayed, and we have some bad news about continued PlayStation 5 shortages. Then: Listener inquiries! When is Sony San Diego gonna talk about MLB: The Show? How come so many multiplayer games are resisting cross-platform play? Will we ever escape from the Gamergate boogieman? Can Colin resist giving a spelling and grammar lesson to one unsuspecting Patron? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. I don't normally comment on the thumbnails, but this one is hilarious!

dudeeee Mystic would be an AMAZING guest for this show

Cannonball_Jones

Dude!!!! Mystic?! Yes! That is the absolute best possible addition. Mystic has been in my rotation almost as long as Colin.

David McKinstry

Seems controller issues were brought up. My face buttons got sticky and mushy on both controllers i have. Had to send one in for repairs.

Bad Brad

In reference to GameStop. It’s more like David vs Goliath if Goliath could take away Davids stones.

Miky Sh

Colin, you said you have 20/20 vision. Don't you wear glasses?

Caleb Greer

I see you have timestamps under the video to skip ads, but can’t you edit the ads out of the video you upload to Patreon? Seems kinda lame considering the $5 tier is supposed to bring ad-free access, and I don’t really appreciate passing the work (if menial) on to me considering I pay for it. I get that the audio version is available to me ad-free, but I’m choosing to consume the video version, so I’d assume they’d both be ad-free. Also, perhaps it’s asking a lot, but timestamps for the video podcast would help a lot. I get it’s more work since the length is different from the audio-only, but the app doesn’t save your spot for the video version like the audio does all the time, so often the video restarts if I have to come back to it, then I have to guess about where I was by referencing the audio timestamps that are inaccurate for the video. In sum, the video version adds the value of video, which I appreciate, but it does so at the cost of imbedded ads and absent timestamps... Thanks for your time.

HeavyBuddha

Is Chris' PS5 sitting on the carpet?

Kenneth Oms

Damn Dustin is such a last stand chad, he’s got the sacred symbols on full display. Colin and Chris need to step it up!

yosh_wah

Holy shit. I thought Dustin was Dreamcastguy this whole time. I found it odd because I feel like his take on video games and the industry is quite different from that of Colin and Chris’s and never seemed in line with what Dustin says on the podcast. I don’t know why I thought it was him. Perhaps just because they have similar voices? Anyway, I’m happy to finally put a face to the voice. Also a quick google search would have disproven me. My apologies, Dustin. Happy to see you on the podcast. You are a hunk among hunks.

Zack Fair

Hey Colin, on one of your previous podcasts you've stated that ME trilogy is coming out 12 March as other gaming news sites have also stated but why do you think they is no preorders for the game yet if that is the release date. Seems strange to me that they isnt any. Thanks

Ryan McQueeney

Take a sip everytime colin says mist

Chris’ audio cut out at the 31:36 mark in the audio version of this episode. It comes back in at 32:03 with Dustin. Did anyone else have this issue? Is this simple Dustin editing error or another case of Big Tech censorship?

Hey, Video timestamps are probably possible, but that's a Dustin question. It's his workflow. So, there are several reasons why the video version has ads, but it all revolves around YouTube, the workflow, and the sheer amount of time it takes to render and upload a video, even on beefy machines like ours with good connections. For starters, uploading essentially the same video twice to YouTube is horrible algorithmically, even when one is deleted. Having one up and then replacing it with the same file minus the ads would hurt us. There's that, and it's important. But the major thing, actually, is the sheer amount of time it takes to render and upload a 2-3 hour video. It's not trivial, and so it's not really possible for us within our work constraints to remove ads when they come in. The video you're seeing simply has to be the video shown to everyone on YouTube; you're merely getting it early. Ads with audio are totally trivial because we record those ads and then they're put into this database and put into shows based on timestamps, etc. But here, we need to hardcode and manually put those ads into the video. It's not ideal, but unfortunately it's our solution, at least for now. If you don't want to keep timestamps handy, a good rule of thumb is just to fast-forward about 90 seconds from the start of the ad, and you'll be golden. And, we don't sell ads every week, so you won't always be dealing with this. We're always open to feedback, and we encourage you to keep it coming, but I hope this makes some sense as to why we're doing things as we are.

My problem with Colin saying that TLOU2 should win Dice Goty is a no, this game was already goty before it was out or played , talk of the game died after Ghost came out, was on sale for $30 in November, yes it’s a beautiful game made by naughty dog that’s all it’s going for it. Animal Crossing sold more, played by a diversity of people from kids to grandparents, was the most talked about game for most of the year (google trends), still sells for $59.

Scott MacLure

Personally I would love to see you and Mystic do something together on plus. Just because I've followed his channel for awhile and his content is good, seems like a cool guy.

Cory Towler

Collin, with what you said about migrating over from PS5 to Xbox due to manufacturing limits; I did just that. I mainly spend all my time on Destiny, and the biggest reason for me wanting to upgrade is due to the mere fact that I want to play Destiny with 60fps and an FOV slider. After countless attempts and hours and hours of time spent trying to attain one, I gave up. I saw a Series X on GameStop’s website and realized enough is enough. I now have a Series X and couldn’t be happier. Keep up the incredible work guys.

Sumojoe118

Mystic is the best Playstation youtuber! I would love to see some kind of 1v1 duel between Mystic and Colin to see who knows the most about obscure Playstation lore.

BakerShop

Colin if you're reading this. Thank you! Its been quite awhile since I've heard any 'political' talk from you and it's so damn good. Just hearing your take on it and how you get fired up talking about it makes me feel like I'm not alone. I'd like for you to talk about more politics like our current crisis in our 'presidency' but I feel like with everything going so well and with the company changes. You're smart enough not to get involved. Even though I want you too. I am truly scared for our country and how lies, fraud, and tyranny are taken over( slowly but surely) common sense and clear evidence. You're awesome man both you and Chris. Dustin has to work for it lol. Have a great day!

I did. I had -1.0 and then -0.5 prescriptions, and then my eyes got back to 20/20. It's apparently not that uncommon, but I didn't know that was even possible. I actually became relatively reliant on the transition lenses, however, and that's why I'd wear them while going out, etc. But I've totally broken myself of wearing them at all, and I just wear sunglasses outside now.

I'm always glad to talk about politics on the show(s) when it makes sense for the topic(s) at hand. But, moving forward, I'm generally going to keep my political opinions to myself and my political conversations to my personal life.

Petre Cismigiu

Guys does anyone know why are there ads on the video show? It's the first time I'm hearing ads. Wasn't the whoel shpiel of patreon being ad free? Most likely I'm an idiot or i didn't get the memo but still curious about this

Petre Cismigiu

I saw them, but that's not really an advantage for a patreon. I could manually skip without having the magic timestamp:)). I don't mind it, anyway. Hearing more of Colin's voice is only a plus for me. Was just curious about the situation. Thanks for the reply and have a good one !

Tim Jones

Can you please start posting the time stamps on your Twitter again? They were super helpful!

I really appreciated you taking the time to explain the GameStop situation Colin, and Chris and Dustin thank you for speaking up for the less fortunate.

DB Cooper

I like Mystic Ryan, that'd be cool to see!

Dave Carsley

So if DICE is the Academy Awards and The Game Awards is the Golden Globes... What's the Oscars?

Hey C(D)C, I just finished January's PS+ free game Shadow of the Tomb Raider and holy crap this game broke my patience for pseudo-load screens. The number of times Lara squeezes through cracks in a wall or slowly crawls under overgrown brush is unbearable - not to mention most of the time you're returning to the same area so you're going through the same obstacles again and again. Even after playing the first two games a few months ago I don't remember them being this bad. Is this going to be a norm in the industry now or is it just some weird Crystal Dynamics quirk? Or, hopefully, is it just a limitation of the PS4, and PS5 games will not need these drawn-out traversal cutscenes? Wading through mud for the 900th time actually made me miss black screens with a spinning icon in the corner. Keep up the great work, boys.

I played it and liked it, but I remember not being blown-away. Remember: Crystal didn't make Shadow!

Not Sure

Chris uses his pointer to push the x buttons??? That goes against the laws of physics. lol

How would a Borderlands movie work you say? Play Tales From the Borderlands by Telltale. Hopefully they’ll go along that route with the writing.
