The Movie Theater | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 161

For pretty much every child, going to the movie theater is a rite of passage. The thing is, the nature of that rite hinges mightily on when and where you grew up. For we The Brothers Moriarty, our formidable movie theater experiences were on Long Island in the '70s, '80s, and '90s, and it's from there that we can draw many memorable, funny, and resonant stories. Our pre-movie rituals. What snacks to eat. Getting rides to and fro. Meeting girls (or boys!). Playing in the arcade. Seeing flicks you weren't supposed to. The saga truly goes on and on. Today's episode of KnockBack -- voted on by the audience -- is dedicated to our favorite cinematic stories. Not on the screen, of course, but our stories of visiting them, instead. Come for Sacred Symbols, stay for knockback.

Rob Aitken

"that's a separate issue" "I consider them linked" A 'The Patriot' reference in the first few minutes, this one is going to be good

Beau

Will absolutely watch an ASMR GI Joe cleaning stream on Twitch

Timothy Bryant

Don’t you hate when you submit something to a knockback topic and then realize while the boys are talking that you have a great story you could’ve told instead of your stupid question? It happens to me everytime lol

Chad Lewis

Come for the talk about movie theatres. Stay for fence companies massaging your balls talk.

SteelChevron

What's a "Mo-vi...*checks notes* e THEAter"?

Matthew Cooper

Great episode. I'm glad the practice of buying tickets to some random PG movie then going to the R movie came up. My friends and I did that all the time. It was so ridiculous, theaters made such a big deal about checking IDs for R rated movies when buying the tickets, but then nobody gave a fuck about which theater people went into. Good times..

Andy Reno

I really enjoyed this. We have a small local theater that has been putting every good movie ever on for $5. No one is ever there but my girlfriend and I in these covid days. We've seen the original star wars trilogy, lord of the rings, most of the harry potters, When Harry Met Sally, Elf, and many others. It's actually been a great year for the theater for me. RIP Movie Pass.

The collect call free message thing is hilarious man, what an awesome tid bit about culture that is gone with technology. Great show

Brian Presley

The hot dog broke and got stuck was the rumor in my school

Jake De Agrela

I feel you Colin in regards to having to drop the niceties. I'm a struggling videographer and have been really struggling lately with getting people to pay me for my services. Glad you've stood up for yourself about the fence. Most people need a kick in the ass.

Caleb Greer

Great episode! Would have loved to hear what you thought about IMAX 2D as well as 3D’s impact on movies over the years, but that’s not really that important anyways.

Kenneth Oms

The first 26 minutes of this hits hard. I just accepted a new job as well, and I had an incident with workers redoing my bathroom that feels exactly like what you went through Col

It sucks. And it's why, as a business owner, I pay everyone on time. In fact, I pay without even being invoiced, because I keep track of it and cut monthly checks. I remember exactly what it was like being a freelancer, and, well, do unto others.

It's brutal, though it did have a happy ending after even more drama! I'll save it for a future episode.

Andrew B

I come for the nostalgia, I stay for the hot-dog-girl conversations.

Beau

Couldn’t agree more with your take on Disney+ and watching Mandalorian. I’ve been enthusiastic about the direction the show was going & hopeful it meant a new direction for Lucasfilm. Once they let Gina go though it seems hopeless and they’ll continue to make the same mistakes under Disney. Fuck em.

Devin Groover

i love going to Alamo Drafthouse too. During the pandemic me and a friend saw the Classic 1979 “Alien” movie at a location in Arizona. We got some free Alien keychains for going too.

NeO JD

Some of this was really nostalgic and relatable even if I never did it, like the calling collect. It was nice to hear about your dad too, that was heartwarming. Lastly, I just recently got into Disney+, and I’ll say Mando (especially S2) and WandaVision kick ass. I’ll probably drop the service every month they don’t have a Star Wars or MCU thing going on, but watching it “live” and guessing what’ll happen week to week is part of the fun. I’m really curious what you’ll think about S2 of Mando specifically. I’m not the biggest Star Wars fan but it got me.

Aric Peña (@AricJP)

Ok, so we definitely need a Mission to Mars Knockback. Lol. 1000% Finish that movie, my good sir. 😄

Koray Savas

Colin, you are spot on about the hot dog argument. My first job was at an AMC, and I can confirm that you should never buy any type of food that has to be prepared for you. Prepackaged and popcorn/sodas are acceptable. Theater employees are underpaid teenagers that don’t give a shit about anything. I’ve seen someone drop a hot dog on the floor, and still serve it.

Alex Ryder

Great episode! I miss the Patchogue movie theater.
