Phantom Bust | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 142

Interesting news emerged in recent days: Sony is funding the creation of a new second party studio in Canada, and it'll be working on a brand new IP for PlayStation. But it's who's leading the team -- Jade Raymond -- that has people excited. But should that excitement be replaced with skepticism? Raymond hasn't released a game in years, and it's uncommon (as in, it virtually never happens) that an industry gets excited over a game producer, as opposed to someone who contributes more creatively. So what gives? Is there reason to be stoked, or is this studio and project nothing more than (for the time being) a figment of our imagination. Plus: More news! Sony has officially revealed PSVR's new controllers, Square Enix has given a proper name to Project Athia, Life is Strange is readying to show off its True Colors, Tiger Woods is now a 2K Sports game, PlayStation is getting generous with the giveaways, and much more! Then: Listener inquiries! Is Colin displaying gatekeeperish tendencies? Are scalpers holding onto their PlayStation 5 consoles? Is watching how long you played on PS5 the new Trophy hunt? Will the delivery man ever find Chris? Get some Sacred Symbols merch! https://LastStandMedia.shop A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. I don't know what a Phantom Bust is... But on a fine Friday, I will learn.

Real Radec

No mention about the new Roadmap for Destruction AllStars? 3 confirmed seasons! New modes and characters! Ranked play! Battlepass! How is this not big news for the podcast?!

Chad Lewis

“The Chad who wrote in”... sons of bitch

If Sony has lost Kojima to Xbox, I will be very very upset. I really am having issues with how PlayStation is being run... what is going on over there?

Justin O'Reilly

I'll take a mold of Chris' vagina please and thanks.

With all due respect, I don't think you're really correcting anything. If I remember correctly, the quote Colin referenced was, "Jade Raymond was responsible for bringing Watch Dogs to market" (or something very very close to that). Being part of an early prototype does not in any way make you "responsible for bringing [the final product] to market". And regardless, the thrust of the argument was that she's being given credit in the media for that game, and if she did play a part in it (which I take your word that she did), it was so insignificant as to not even be among the 3000 people mentioned in the credits. IMO, the point stands uncorrected. Just my two cents though. No disrespect intended.

Dave Carsley

My gut tells me Chris is probably not really correct about Sea of Thieves having twice as many players as God of War. I'm guessing he's probably forgotten about the concept of used games (despite places like Gamestop floundering, it's still a huge business). There would have been many many people who bought God of War second hand -- which wouldn't be included in the "copies sold" figures -- whereas [comparatively] nobody bought a used copy of Sea of Thieves (an online only "free" game that is super easy for every Gamepass member to click on and try for 5 minutes). Heck, I was one of those 20 million people. I played it for 10 minutes and didn't spend a dollar on it. So I don't think "total players" of a game like Sea of Thieves is a metric that should be compared directly to "copies sold".

Phantom bust reminds me of that scene in Scary Movie where she fucks the ghost.

Take a drink for every "Jade Raymond" fookin ell.

Chris yawns his way through another episode, looking pretty radioactive too.

Zack Fair

I think this is what's going to finally get me into VR now with the motion tracker

Michael Miller

Chris won’t spoil 2012s Far Cry 3, but will spoil 2018s God of War😅 What a silly man. By the way, thank you guys for answering my question this week and discussing it for as long as y’all did. That was fun to watch.

I'm not compelled by this number. Sony announced 10 million a year and a half before that, so if it is at 20, it was done at a substantial budget cut. Either way, Sony hasn't said anything since 2019.

I think the bigger problem is that playerbase size really isn't relevant if your game is ostensibly free.

Greg Hadden

Hey Col can I get a ruling? Am I a poser if I play Returnal without having played any of Housemarque’s other games? Thank you

BlindRiot

It’s so strange that Square is giving Microsoft Octopath Traveler before Sony, and then on top of that it’s going to Game Pass. Strange days my friends.

I just dropped in to comment on the psnow discussion. I find the fact that I can’t play so many of Sony’s titles on my ps5 natively just so far beyond absurd right now. Infamous 1/2, the resistance series, all the early god of wars. Why won’t they figure this out? It speaks volumes to me as a consumer that I can take an Xbox disc, throw it in my series x, and play the damn thing. I look at my shelf of ps3 games and my busted OG ps3 and I just get mad.

Just to clarify guys there is nothing wrong with the AstraZeneca vaccine. All the hubbub is the EU playing politics with us newly independent brits. We might be in one of the strictest lockdowns in the world but we have vaccinated more than half of adults at least once. Thanks guys you are the best

I actually played through the original red dead redemption via streaming on my PS4 a few years back. It was fine, but the disc was right there on my shelf... but like I was saying, imagine you could download all those exclusive titles and play them natively on your ps5. PSNow leap frogs game pass over night in value if they figure that out, even without day 1 exclusives.

This was one of my favorite episodes in quite awhile. The three of you just seemed to be clicking together even better than usual. Light and funny - good banter : )

Greetings MMF, I couldn't agree more about your opinions regarding Jade Raymond. I first noticed her as an inexperienced journalist who awkwardly interviewed game devs on Electric Playground. Back then I wondered what the hell she was doing on that show as she didn't seem to know a whole lot about the industry. Imagine my shock years later when I saw the same person producing an upcoming AAA action title, with a cool premise, for Ubisoft. I wasn't impressed with the final product and couldn't understand the hype surrounding it and it's producer. The game continued to spawn a seemingly endless number of spinoffs and sequels. To this day I'm bewildered by its enduring popularity and Ms. Raymond's esteemed reputation. I'm not downplaying the important role a producer plays in the development of a video game but... she produced some games. A lot of them weren't even that good. To regard her in the same manner as visionaries and creative minds such as Levine, Hennig, Kojima, etc is absolutely absurd. I'm just going to say it: must be the looks. Good for her I guess. Peace, boys.

Yeah, it's strange. I'm sure she's talented and knowledgeable, but certainly not to the degree she's revered.
