How Xbox Game Pass Impacts Game Developers | Defining Duke Ultimate Episode 12

Mike Rose of No More Robots (Descenders, Yes Your Grace, Hypnospace Outlaw, and more!) joins this week's Defining Duke Ultimate to tell the story of how Xbox Game Pass has impacted the games his publishing label works on. What kind of financial deals are struck for developers and how do the nature of sales alleviate some of the pressure of making a game? Does this shape how games are made? Mike provides the answers. We dive into the metrics available through Game Pass like download and player counts as well as whether or not PlayStation has an upcoming competitor for the service. While this is widely viewed in a favorable manner, Mike even presents some negatives that Xbox Game Pass can bring to the table for studios. All in all, an insight interview that will leave you more informed about Xbox's future platform then when you first began listening. Defining Duke Ultimate is a weekly supplemental show exclusive to Last Stand's Patreon. Episodes go live for $5 and up Patrons every Wednesday and on Saturdays for $1 Patrons. Wonderful episode and congrats Matty, I know this is something you've been wanting to pull off for a while. Will be keeping an eye out for No More Robots' upcoming announcements

Michael

Great episode of DDU Matty, very insightful and fun interview. Keep up the awesome work

Viktor

Great interview Matty!

The Late Nate

This was super insightful! I learned a bunch from this, really nice to hear from a publisher in depth about GamePass instead of industry talking heads barely scratching the surface and retreading the same conversations

Great discussion and super insightful. What you said about “PlayStation Game Pass” was another perspective I’d never thought of before. I think they will eventually do something but it will be more like Disney+ than like Netflix. It’ll build on their legacy of amazing titles while bringing some new titles as part of the subscription and some that you need to pay for. I think we’re a few years away from that though.

Michael Robinson

Very rarely comment but just wanted to feedback that this was a fantastic epic, great interview.

Sucks I didn’t get my question read for the fourth time but hey, still great episode. Keep being my favorite Xbox podcast.

BlindRiot

Good stuff Matty.

Love the interview! I didn't listen to much of the Gears episode since I'm not really into those, but this whole interview was great, and their games haven't ever interested me.

39 min in, I was listening about Sony's Gamepass. The thing is, it already exists, and has existed for ages. It's PSNow. There's really only two differences between Gamepass and PSNow. One is, Sony is absolutely awful at advertising what they have to the public. The second is, they wait a year or so before putting new first party games into it. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same thing. (Streaming service + recent console games downloadable, for $15 per month.) Sony is really bad about this in general. Over and over they've created new tech and new ideas, then just kind of waffled around with them, not enhancing them, not really fully committing to any of them. They had a Wii/Kinect equivalent starting in the PS2, but it was cruddy. They had a portable console that could connect to a TV to play, but it was clumsy and not well implemented. And they had the basis for Gamepass much earlier, but they kind of just slacked off on it... I'm pretty sure that despite having PSNow already, they're not going to do what it takes to make it actually successful.
