A Strategy For A New Era | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 171

It's not 1995 anymore, or 2000, or 2006, or even 2013. During those years -- when PSone through PS4 launched in the west -- PlayStation's success revolved around what it itself can do. Its own system, its own studios, its own architecture. But in 2021? Things are changing. Sony's recent acquisition of Nixxes was all of the evidence you needed of the shifting sands, but recent interviews from ex-PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden and current PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan are incredibly illuminating when it comes to intent. After all, when Ryan is asking how a PlayStation hit selling 10 million can instead sell 100 million, he understands that can only happen by opening things up. The question is, does the audience understand too? Or is everyone about to get angry? We discuss. Plus: PS5 supply issues may ease in 2022, Konami is going both big and small, Final Fantasy's bizarre prequel has a release date, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Can third parties protect each other from consolidation? Should Sony cuddle up to Valve? Does PlayStation require more kid-friendly fare? And whatever happened to that man that pooped his pants on that date, anyway? The answer will surprise and please you. A beautiful end to the shittiest saga ever told. Congrats Austin. Also, how awesome would it be to have a Quantic Dream style game with Austin's shit story as a side or main quest? A boy can dream.

Kenneth Oms

Very excited for this. Colin when you said to Chris “I can promise you one of your Puerto Rican uncles will be on the moon” knowing my people, we can expect to see a Puerto Rican flag planted up there haha!

Alan Hayden

Happy Friday all. Enjoy!

David Graham

I assure you that if I actually meet and eventually marry a human female, you're all invited and offered status as the best man.

Nolan Ramsey

Can’t wait to listen. Not sure if you touch on the news that Yakuza series creator Rui Ga Gotoku Studio is losing their studio head rumored to go to NetEase. Sad. Yakuza:Like a Dragon is the best JRPG I’ve played in a decade.

Droit du seigneur, (French: “right of the lord”), a feudal right said to have existed in medieval Europe giving the lord to whom it belonged the right to sleep the first night with the bride of any one of his vassals.

Derek Alcott

Yes!! I'm excited to listen while playing Metroid Dread. Am I crazy but I didn't see the chance to post questions for this week's episode.

Al Rodriguez

This is not the first "shitted on a date, now we are married" story I've heard. My wife's bestfriend cousin (female), forced her now husband to pull over so she could shit on the side of the road. This was their first date. They been together for over 15 years and married a long part of that. LOL.

Stephen Forgione

This show is my unofficial notice that the weekend is here! Very thankful for that.

Michael Miller

I think Konami is choosing to remake Snake Eater because it’s the first in the timeline. This might be the beginning of something bigger. By the way, calling the original MGS unplayable is some flat-earth level bullshit and I won’t allow it.❤️

Chris' reaction to the cereal segment has made my entire year. I can only imagine the Lockmort gold that will come from this moment.

Ealia Staroverov

Colin, (I'm being facetious in case it doesn't come across) I must say my disappointment with you is immeasurable. I can forgive your two bright-eyed, young lads for being unaware, but not you sir. Back on PS3 select titles actually had a 1 hour trial if you were a PS+ subscriber (they called it Full Game Trial). While a bit too short, the crazy thing is actually that the timer started when you Launched the game. Sony has managed to somehow regress from where they were 10 years ago. Have a great one!

Jorge Sosa

Congrats Austin! 😎

Michael Limauro

Lol Chris was on point about the recent blunders of Activision. Crash 4 was amazing, so let’s put Toys for Bob on Call of Duty!

Matthew Foley

I gotta say watching this podcast just reminded me of the peak beyond days. This trio of guys is really something special. Great chemistry and everyone brings so much knowledge. Great job!

Ok, this is ABSOLUTELY the funniest episode of Sacred Symbols, full stop

Brian Salazar

Has Colin come to grips with the fact that a new Castlevania game would probably be a souls like? Lol

Liam Mcnulty

Hey Colin, I have a request, is there any chance that when you guys are watching a clip, like the PES glitches that the screen could but shared? There's 3 boxes for you, and your two sons but you could fit a 4th in there for when you want to show us whatever is relevant. Just a suggestion, you can tell me to FO if you want lol.

Love how the 'Some smaller items' is the longest topic lol

Zack Fair

Hey Im a PlayStation loyalist. I for one don't mind at all if PlayStation puts a game on PC a couple of years later for example. If it keeps PlayStation making more expensive and bigger games, hit after hit as games are getting more expensive than I'm cool with that

Zack Fair

Guys anyone still wanting a PS5, hit up sites like stockinformer here in the uk etc or a site like that in the US. You sign up for free and they send you push notifications once stock is at retailers, that's how I bagged mine at launch. Good luck!

Microwaved Grape Nuts is fine, maybe even good. Any other cereal is heresy.

Germanos

Sigh, guys. Yes the payment processes via credit card and PayPal removal is due to maintenance and security funds that is constantly required if your online system uses them. That's why I said they should close the stores. And one thing that is different between watching the movie on Amazon and playing the trial on PS5 is that you can unplug your console from internet after downloading the full game.

Jaime Martinez

Let’s be real. Rush would be the ring bearer.

That is most likely the reason. In Europe at least, online credit card payments are now subject to 2 factor authentication, which requires development to support it… Being a software engineer myself and knowing how companies allocate resources, it is quite likely that there aren’t many developers currently working at all for ps3/vita at Sony. Maybe just one poor guy is there, just ensuring the system is running 😅. Also considering Sony’s track record in their software (eg not being able to change your psn username…), it is not really surprising that this is the case…

After dropping about 10-12 hours into FarCry 6 plus reading the Waypoint write up that Colin cited, I am now convinced there isn’t a chance in hell that Colin plays it, let alone completes it—which in this, would actually be okay with. While I am still enjoying some of the craziness, my last session felt like a slog to realize that I only just recruited 1 of 3 groups of resistance members. The game is indeed bloated and I am skipping nearly all the side stuff. Since you stumble into soo much shit, plus animals biting you and having to go long distances on foot if your vehicle gets destroyed, you are literally on foot many times just running down destination markers, which sucks ass. Also, concerning Giancarlo Esposito’s character, it doesn’t come off as authentic and his character model has too much “film grain.” It like they relegated these scenes with him and his son so they can have him say this dumb, half-serious summarizations of the why he needs to rule Yara and it comes off so cheesy…likely not Ubisoft’s intent. With the other villains, I felt there was more of a narrative sophistication to them…with Anton Castillo, it feel like they worried too much on getting a named actor and forgot to write him well. Some reviewers are saying he “kills every scene he is in,” but that is a joke-they just have him say pseudo psychotic things in a calm voice and it doesn’t work at all (thus far). Dude isn’t even Spanish also.

Between 13 Sentinels, Hades, Disco Elysium, Tales of Arise, Deathloop, Kena, FarCry 6, potentially the Call of Duty: Vanguard campaign, and technically, a just and sound interest to play Metroid Dread and Advance Wars 1&2 Remake, which assuredly are worth your time…plus there was consideration to play Alan Wake Remastered as well as a game or two related obligation for Knockback. It’s not gonna happen, and even with the Switch titles notwithstanding, this still represents only about 75% of what you said you’d play in 2021. There’s 75 days left in the year… And between Dustin being strangely interested in making roads from Lake Knot City to South Knot City to get an endorphin rush from likes upon booting up Death Stranding and then essentially spending the peak gaming months doing standard deliveries for it (and yes I played the directors cut as well last month) and Chris only turning on his PS5 to make sure it still works and then only doing multiplayer streaming stuff on his Series X or PC, I think end of year stuff gonna be thin in terms of discourse for strictly 2021 titles from y’all. Finally, between working to hit deadlines for the Lillymo internal roadmap in 2022 (that include native PS5 patches and any unannounced titles commitments) and schedules for Last Stand, the NFL, household, two dogs and a partner-it’ll take a Herculean task to achieve. Make sure you prep that Solar Ash spoilercast too if you can, game was delayed to December and is the last exclusive of the year.
