QA Is Good, Actually | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 171

Welcome Kendrick Luckenbach to the show. For four years, Kendrick worked in the QA trenches at San Diego Studio, where he toiled away on Sony's all-important MLB: The Show franchise. He even got a crack at some second party products, like Ready Set Heroes, and applications, like PlayStation Vue. I (Colin) wanted to invite Kendrick onto the show to bring balance to the industry-wide conversation surrounding labor, and quality assurance in particular. After all, we had a pro-labor episode not too long ago (#157), which is very much a view worth exploring. Yet, it's also important to represent where things go right, when, and why. Unlike Activision-Blizzard, Sony is renowned in game dev for being a great place to work. Does Kendrick agree? What was his experience like? What's a "smoke check?" Why is something called Jira important? What's PlayStation Neighborhood? We get into the nitty-gritty, which I know appeals to much of this very nerdy audience. Please enjoy.

Hey, would it be possible for you to link the guest's social stuff in the description? I had a little trouble finding him after watching and I'm certain I'm not alone. Great show!

This was a great interview. Would love to hear interviews from QA folks in other studios to get a better grasp of common experience and outlier experience.

Definitely check out Sacred Symbols+, Episode 157: Why Activision Should Unionize. Fantastic episode from another QA cohort which is why I wrote to Colin in the first place! Reach out to me on twitter @KendrickLuck or on LinkedIn. We can discuss further if you'd like 😁

Super cool to hear about this perspective. The Vue stuff especially stood out to me as I was the creator of a PlayStation Original Series following a successful pitch to Shawn Layden and co until the whole TV initiative was shut down. Fortunately for me, 4 years later I’m deciding between taking an associate mission design position in San Diego at my dream (non first party) studio upon graduation in May or continuing to find a publisher for my indie studio’s beat-em-up. It worked out and hearing Kendrick’s input is legitimately very inspiring!
