Gather Ye Sacred Dukes | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 206

We know you guys and gals love it when we get Sacred Symbols and Defining Duke together, and we figured since it's a little slow in the industry right now, now's the time to strike! As such, please welcome Defining Duke: An Xbox Podcast's co-hosts -- Matty and Cog -- to Sacred Symbols+. Today's two hour episode winds around a bit, as we talk about our feelings on Xbox and PlayStation's current standing in the industry, how they compare to each other both favorably and unfavorably, and more. We also talk about PlayStation's nebulous release future, the perceived quality gap between Xbox and PlayStation first party releases, and the games we're most excited to play, both later in 2022 and beyond.

Please do more of these guys! We don’t get to see you all interacting like this too often and it was fantastic.

Colin if you're there I'd like to say that when you brought up the Xbox people "testing" the other versions that is exactly how I use GamePass. I tried out Deaths Door, Nobody Saves The World, and Shredders Revenge just to see if I like it....and then I buy it on PS5 for the trophies. Great episode!

The Xbox mismanagement conversation is so funny to me. Since the beginning of 2021 they’ve launched the same amount of first party games as Sony and they have higher metacritic scores in a much more diverse library. 343 has been a problem child for about 10 years. But I don’t think one studio (that still made a fantastic game) is indicative of the other 20 plus studios. Xbox didn’t just purchase these studios either. I work right next to the new building they moved InXile to in Irvine. Trust me, that’s not a small studio anymore. Xbox bolstered many of these studios big time and even had studios like Playground and obsidian create whole new teams to work on multiple projects. These things take time but I’d put money on it, these studios are coming and once the damn breaks this narrative will look pretty silly.

I knew the day would come. We cannot cannot ignore mergers when they are bound to happen. Vanilla and chocolate, chocolate and peanut butter, peanut butter and dogs, dogs and cats. Disney and Marvel hold no candle to the handshake of LSM and Lexapro. I now do not have to be ashamed of crying at night because my school friends and summer camp pals are together at last. Everything is looking up Milhouse! This is what it must feel like for Mr. Feeny to give someone a sincere compliment!

This what you call a Last Stand Orgy right?

Raymond keys

Sorry I know that was highly inappropriate.

Microsoft is in no way, shape, or form responsible for Psychonauts 2, Ghostwire, or Deathloop. We're still waiting to see what their studios, within their ecosystems for the duration of the incubation period for a game, can do. Claiming Deathloop as an Xbox victory is goofy.

Sorry Colin but that’s bull shit. Tim Schaffer has been pretty outspoken about Xbox saving that game which was under development for 3 years under Microsoft ownership. I like how Microsoft doesn’t get credit for the games that do good but they take the heat for Starfield and Redfall when they hit a snag. The goal post continues to move for Xbox. Even if you exclude those games that you don’t count, Xbox’s first party games still had equal or higher reviews than Sonys. We don’t count the Series S as next gen sales and games that Microsoft funded and managed for years don’t count either? Lol

Dhruv Gupta

Agreed - Tim Schafer has mentioned multiple times that the only reason they even have boss levels in psychonauts 2 is because of Microsoft funding. And if people have played the game (imo) it is some of the best content in the game.

Awesome episode guys! Should do a few a year

I feel like this should be a quarterly meeting if possible.

Iqan Adil

I think we should have these episodes more often. Really liked it. Great job guys.

Thats a nice family photo. One side you got the cousins Matty and Cog. On the other is Daddy Moriarty hugging his two kids Dustin and Chris.

just to expound on the "why pay when it's free" thought process of gamepass: i'v had gamepass since XBSX launch day, i still went and bought a physical copy of forza horizon, halo, the medium, and flight simulator. all day 1 game pass games, i still bought them outright on release day anyway. and apparently according to matt's npd figures, i wasn't alone. 😊 but i don't have gamepass so i can get games for free. i have gamepass so i can experiment with games i otherwise wouldnt take a risk on. for games i know i'll love, i still buy. i'll be buying red fall and starield as well.

Great Content, do you still plan on getting together to do a deep dive on the xbox showcase?
