The Past, Present, and Future of Wrestling Games | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 223

Please welcome Ian Scherer of 616Entertainment to the show. I (Colin) invited Ian onto + to discuss the wide spectrum and rich history of wrestling video games, of which he is a bona fide expert and of which I know very little. After all, my days of wrestling gaming began with Pro Wrestling on NES and ended sometime in the SNES and Genesis era just a few short years later. As it turns out, I've missed a vibrant near-three decade run of amazing fare, both licensed and unlicensed, from studios both still-alive and defunct, trying to both simulate the real thing and provide more arcadey experiences. From WWF, WCW, and WWE to Fire Pro, Rumble Roses, and even 5-Star Wrestling: We touch on as much as we can as I try to get a grasp on the genre, the playerbase, and the pursuit of the perfect wrestling experience.

Ian's 616 channel is incredible. I've been a fan of his for almost as long as Colin and CLS/LSM. He is an authority on all things wrestling games but arguably as strong in Mortal Kombat content. He ventures into other games too, generally PlayStation nostalgic gaming. The man even made an entire retrospective series on the Halloween movie franchise which continues this year! Not trying to be too pushy on his behalf, but I respect his hustle and attention to quality content. If any new LSM fans dig this interview, I highly recommend giving his content a try.

Bold choice to keep Chris Benoit in the thumbnail.

Lol. that’s why I love Last Stand… you guys aren’t afraid to make the touch choices.

Another fascinating episode! Outside of playing some of the games back on the N64 and really enjoying them I have no major connection to wrestling, but just hearing you interview about different things tangentially related to video games is awesome.

Chad Lewis

So excited for this!

Probably my favourite SS+ so far. Great subject matter, great guest and of course great hosting. Edit: Colin if you're interested in some of the crazy backstage stuff to do with wrestling then there is a documentary series called Dark Side of the Ring. I think it's on VICE...some of the episodes are wild. There is even one where WCW did a tour in North Korea which is fascinating.

What an episode. Gotta have him back on.

Great episode he’s definitely passionate about wrestling games. Especially back when they where good i may even go & check one out. I haven’t played a wrestling game since WWE2K15 back on PS4.
