Appeasement | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 221

Life is full of choices. And a fundamental choice is what you do for a living and who you work for. So it was disappointing to see Shawn Layden -- a champion of PlayStation's first party games for a run of very good years -- choosing to sign with Tencent as a Special Advisor. As an ex-Fortune 500 executive, Layden is already set for life, and with a reputation and track record like his, he can work anywhere and do anything. He's chosen to be used to help normalize and strengthen Tencent's western operation, and in our humble opinion, he has some explaining to do. Plus: We further assess the catastrophic Grand Theft Auto VI leak (as well as Rockstar's response to it), EA's new Iron Man game (and its potential to be the next Spider-Man), rumors circulating about a new PS5 model (with a detachable disc drive), and much more. Then: Listener inquiries. What's the economic strategy behind Square Enix's coming avalanche of releases? Is there a firm line in game emulation that simply shouldn't be crossed? In an industry so mired in negative news, what's a glaring positive we've identified? Where the hell has Chris gone off to? lmao at Colin doing the Goofy impression and Dustin thinking he's calling him an idiot 😂

MikeLee

There isn’t a finer exception to the rule than pirating games coming from the world’s most inhumane parties, a la Tencent and SNK. Fuck ‘em - pirate everything they put out.

This was the pod that got me to subscribe. Clarity of values. Great work, guys.

I play everything on discs, on my PS5. Even indies Stray, Sifu, Death's Door pre-ordered. And I have a good internet connection, excellent. It's about the ownership, at least for me :) Also the comparison to movies, renting VHS/DVS, buying music albums, and video games, does not work. Apple and oranges. Too long to write, maybe next call-in :P

re: chasis d news... sept 2022, on the playstation and switch side, outside of very rare specific occurrences, i exclusively play single player games on disc. so much so to the point of if the game isn't on disc, the developer/publisher simply lost me as a customer. on xbox it's different. i have gamepass and use that quite extensively, but i still buy the first party titles on disc though when available. all that being said, the idea of a detachable disc drive may sway me to buy a new ps5 and like 3 or 4 disc drive units just to have on reserve 😊😊

Thank you for speaking about the moves that happened recently from game-journalism to game-development. Not only Jonathan D. from IGN, but also Andrew Reiner. I spoke about as it happened on Twitter and was overflown with comments "not agreeing" with my take, that it is WEIRD.

Regarding Xbox players not buying games: Hogwart's Legacy is no. 6 on the Amazon top buy list. While they don't even make it to the top 50 on Series X/S. I think this is telling. It's one of the most anticipated games.

About no Square releases for Xbox: "Nobody" has bought # SoulHackers2 on Xbox. No NPD record for the game. #CrisisCore is ranked 300+ in the ranking of Xbox products on Amazon (PS5 at 27). #OctopathTraveler goes to GP and does not appear in the TOP 50 MOST PLAYED even once (for now)! Same with new release for #NiNoKuni (for now), which was hyped by Phil Spencer. And #dioFieldChronicle same thing - no appearance on NPD for Xbox. Makes you think when Phil says: "Our gamers want and love Japanese games." XD

Oh, and since I was accused of not liking the show due to complains (my view justified), I really enjoyed the episode and the discussion here. It was great to listen to. Thank you. Hope Chris is fine. He can always move to Poland, we have great internet XD

Where I live, there's still a number of physical media stores that aren't big box stores. Books, DVD/Blurays, Games, Music, all still available physically here. I'm pretty patient and don't have to play games on release to be happy, so if there's no physical, I'll just buy during deep sales. Sony will probably go from making $50-70 from me per game to $0-20 per game, and I might even just shift to Steamdeck and Switch entirely. I already buy Lillymo games on Steamdeck instead.

Props to Dustin making pen & paper notes for his Suikoden playthrough. I find it way more satisfying than digital notes. If you haven't tried it, a cheap notepad and pen are wonderful companions to playing a complex game

Minor, Last Timestamp is busted

past three gens I had a rather neutral stance on them, a competing company, kind of a normal thing, but since they decided on "microsofting" the passion I hold very close to my heart...yeah, I get mad
