Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Review and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 257

One of PlayStation Portable's very best games came in the form of a 2008 Final Fantasy VII spin-off called Crisis Core. While it wasn't the first new product spawned from FFVII, it was certainly the strongest, telling the story of Zack Fair, a character we don't know a whole lot about in the main game, but someone who's intimately involved in the early portions of VII' lore. Thankfully, the once-stranded title has migrated to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 -- basically remade from the ground-up -- in the form of Crisis Core Reunion, and we're eager to talk about it. Because it's really awesome! To help, I (Colin) enlisted the help of our EP, Dustin, but also of The Washington Post's Gene Park, who was kind enough to take some time out of his schedule to join us and chat. So sharpen that Buster Sword, friends, and prepare to prove your honor, flip phone in-hand.

The summon animations discussion made me think of Sephroth’s Super Nova ability in the original game. Who knew game developers could make math equations look so damn dangerous.

Zack Fair

Where was the talk on his death guys??

Christian Longo

The to be continued at the end is not for Rebirth, it is for the OG FF7.

Jon Barnett

I hope we have Gene back for the FF16 spoiler cast! It's really nice hearing someone else nerd out about classic FF stuff with Colin.

Leeor Vardi

on future spoilercasts, a built-in section to discuss the ending somewhere in the podcast would be awesome :)

Thank you for a great discussion. This truly felt like a Remake instead of a Remaster. As always, it was great to hear Gene on the spoilercast. He has excellent chemistry with Colin and the rest of the gang.

Jorge Aponte

It's practically for both. This Crisis Core has the exact same story as the one in 2007.

Pyo

Amazing episode, always love when Gene is on the show. Please have him more games in 2022, especially final fantasy games

Gene Park

i kinda touch on it when i talk about the jpop ballad and how the end feels like a cowboy bebop episode. so good.

Gene Park

i’d love to have an extended chat or maybe a knock back even about classic final fantasy. maybe around the pixel remaster console release huh

Ryan F

I bought this game, but would rather watch this spoliercast instead of playing it.

John Moore

So glad you guys mentioned how awesome Briana White is! If you haven’t already, check out her YouTube channel, Strange Rebel Gaming. It made me love her so much more that she’s an actual gamer. She has Let’s Plays of FFVIIR, Crisis Core and a few episodes where she played the OG FFVII with John Bentley, the VA for Barrett in Remake

John Moore

You and me both! She always surprises me with her analyses as well. Absolutely love you too man! And the rest of the LSM crew!

Yalingo

Had to let me sub lapse over Xmas but resubbed for this episode! Loved it

Also side note, my wife and I who had played crisis core separately back in the mid 2000s, both loved it so much that we named our son Zack. We're super excited to see what they do with rebirth!
