The Callisto Protocol Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 258

Last month, a long-awaited survival horror game launched on PS5 (and elsewhere) in the form of The Callisto Protocol. Led by Dead Space and Call of Duty veteran Glen Schofield's new studio Striking Distance, Callisto was at first envisioned as a project set in the PUBG universe. It ultimately found its way towards being something of its own, though, and the result has been undoubtedly divisive. Yet, we here at Last Stand Media kinda-sorta like this game, at least more than the general consensus, and we're here to say: Yes! The Callisto Protocol is deeply flawed, but also the beginning of something potentially awesome. It's -- as we say time and time again on this episode -- a title that's almost there. Indeed, it's akin to The Order: 1886. And in an environment rife with the same-ol' repetitive nonsense, than in and of itself is a notable feature.

Haven't played it but I always enjoy these episodes. Maybe I'll give it a shot when a deep discount happens or more likely gamepass.

This game reminded me of The Order 1886. Both are beautiful games that I really enjoyed but could be improved drastically in a sequel. Unlike The Order I hope Callisto gets a 2nd chance we need more horror franchises. If I have to squeeze through another fucking vent or shimmy through a crack in another game I'm smashing my Playstation lol

This episode made me feel better because I felt like I was being gaslit by many because I actually liked (not loved) Callisto. Great discussion!

Great chat. I had the same thought as Chris when he mentioned people complaining about the number of enemies in certain sections and thinking it was probably during the main stealth section of the game. There are a lot of enemies there, but the optimal strategy is to take it slow and wipe out the enemies quietly. Hell…it even has “Keep silent” written on the walls at the start of that area. Anyway, good to see some sensible takes on the game. Goes without saying that a SS+ with Glen Schofield would be amazing. Fingers crossed he is allowed to do this; I am sure he would be up for it but the powers that be might put the kibosh on it.

Who gives a f what other people think, if you enjoyed it good for you. I love Assassin’s Creed games, and so do many people based on how they sell. I care whether people moan about them.

I agree with the guys, I paid the 70 quid, smashed out the platinum in a few days, enjoyed my time with it and moved on to the next game in the list. Wish we had a lot more titles like this

Hello CDC, Quick correction (kind of) from the last episode before holiday break when you guys were discussing the DualSense's built in mic. You can set the mic to auto mute itself upon login to your psn in the settings menu of your PS5. If you go to Settings-->Sound-->Microphone-->Microphone Status When Logged In-->then toggle this to mute. This way it is automatically muted when you start up your PS5 and you can choose to manually unmute if you wanted to. Hopefully this will save some people from instadeath due to embarrassment. Hope you all are doing well!

Yeah, you really do need to use stealth. Which is a nice touch not often seen in horror (where you can sneak up on a zombie, for instance).

It's fascinating to see the divided opinions on this game. I personally gave it a pass, but watching different streamers and YouTubers play/review it, I saw a slightly different experience each time. Expectations matter a lot tbh - for those expecting a Dead Space/Resident Evil experience, they were disappointed, but those who went in more open-minded, they thought it was okay, but not great. Hopefully a sequel will hit the mark for everyone, if it ever happens.

I think it's interesting. We'll see how it looks next to the behemoths coming in the next few months.

The skunk gun can actually be very strong - does a crazy amount of damage, can smack and take multiple enemies out at the kneecaps, only thing is you can to be pretty close. I don't think people gave it enough of a chance, especially once it is upgraded the thing is a beast and was my favourite and most used weapon. In regards to the game itself, despite the short comings I really enjoyed my time with it. I am hoping we get a sequel that can improve upon the areas where it faltered, but with the news of the game not performing as well as it was projected to I am concerned we might not get another. Fingers crossed we do, as there is so much potential here.
