Ad Astra | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 238

Long-percolating rumors have been confirmed: Housemarque's wonderful third-person PS5 shooter Returnal is headed to PC, and you're going to need a beefy rig to enjoy all it has to offer. But not all is well in the stars. Krafton's The Callisto Protocol, released in December to middling reviews, was also met with soft sales. Somehow, the publisher spent something like $160 million over three years making the game, and the project is very much in the red. How could things have gone so poorly for such a promising title? And how is it possible that something like Callisto cost literally 10 times what it took for Remedy to make Control, and five times what they're spending on its sequel? Tons of sales data, discussions about Atomic Heart and Hogwarts Legacy, and more round out this week's news offerings, as we then delve into listener inquiries from Patreon. Should we expect Sony to make more acquisitions this year? Are recent layoffs at Microsoft at all emblematic of issues with the Xbox brand? Is the end nigh for GameSpot and Giant Bomb? Will one listener ever find out who the mystery person in the bathroom was? You know, the one listening to Sacred Symbols while doing his business? That is pretty astonishing about The Calisto Protocol. Didn't Horizon Zero Dawn cost not that much to make also? I almost shit the floor when the show ended like it did! Brilliant. Is this the first show where Chris didn't say "Take Care Guys" when appearing on it?

Everything Meraz

Lmfao, whoever edited that ending 😂😂😂😂 your work is impeccable

Guys, I'm at the $1 tier and I still don't see the SS+ episode about the pilot episode of TLOU HBO show. When does it go live for us? Thanks!

Thank you, Dustin. I just noticed that, for some reason, my last Patreon charge was in April 2022. How the hell did I continue seeing everything (in due time) that you guys do for paying customers only until now? Very weird. But I'm happy to reactivate my membership. Again, thank you for your reply.

Hey CDC, I work for a biotech company. Male baldness is mostly inherited from the X Chromosome (your mother) so you father is not always the best indicator on the likelihood you will be bald. Nothing is guaranteed of course, and yes hair transplants have come a long way recently. Most medical studies of medicines and creams to prevent baldness are not promising. They seem to slow the process of balding but do not prevent it.

Did Colin say that they DON'T run into the people on the side of the road to say no to? Because they most certainly do

I’m sympathetic to the Russian people, and the developers pf Atomic Heart. That said, Ukraine defending themselves is good. Having the means and will to defend your own lands is good, not bad. It would be one thing if they, like, wanted to surrender. But they want to not live under a tyrant. And while us supporting that is a big investment, it is relatively minuscule compared to our budget, or even out own defense spending. And also, we’re not neutral—Putin hates us, and would escalate to war with the west if he had the power. Doing nothing sometimes is an action in itself.

Zack Fair

Yeah I can't see Easy allies covering Hogwarts legacy, since they have a trans person on the team. How did games journalism get this bad and everyone seem to have a hive mind thinking of the same way

Thank you for this, while I honestly cannot be this sympathetic with the Russian people as you are. I'm from Poland. I see and talk to the Ukrainian mothers, that I meet at kindergartens or playgrounds. Russian soldiers are animals. Raping, stealing and murdering whatever catches their eye. I hope my kinds grow up not hating people from Russia, but for me: either you protest against Putin or are in jail for it.

Germanos

I have a feeling that J. K. Rowling talking about the fact that women are menstruating, and a country murdering thousands of civilians, a lot of those kids, are KIND OF NOT THAT QUITE SIMILAR when it comes to reasons for not buying a game.

Joshua Brown

Heads up Colin, don’t use The Gamer’s guide for Persona 5 Royal when you eventually start your playthrough. As nicely laid out as it is, it’s riddled with errors that only become apparent 4 months into the games calendar, avoid.

I'm also $1 tier and sometimes the posts don't appear in the order they go live. Sometimes I'll find Knockback or a spoilercast several items down even though it is the newest thing to go live.

I hear you. If a Russian soldier has any decency, they would desert en masse. I just mean to have some sympathy for non-soldiers who don’t get news of the reality, and are ignorant. The minimum dignified thing a Russian civilian could do is work hard to escape the propaganda and uncover the truth. And the most dignified thing would be to protest and revolt—which at least a few are coming somewhat close to doing. But for those that understand the injustice in the war, Colin asks what do I expect them to do if speaking the truth is illegal? I’m asking them to break the law and speak anyway. Such people are remembered as heroes, in the fullness of time.

Flying Wild Hog had a nice 2022. Trek To Yomi was pretty solid too.

Hey I don’t really care about boycotts or Hog Leg, but Colin has been peddling this “go find it because its not there” narrative with JK Rowling and it’s just incredibly moronic. I’m not saying there’s UNIVERSAL outrage or that everyone’s in agreement on this, but if you want to find things she has said that offends or is derogatory towards the trans community, it’s just incredibly easy. If you want to say that YOU agree with her and see nothing wrong I mean fine I guess I’m not gonna convince you, but the fallacy that the opposite side has NOTHING to base their frustrations on is just misinformation. Don’t let annoying Twitter people send you into an, equally bad, opposite reaction. That’s my advice for today.

I've heard this before, but then was told I was wrong so I stopped parroting it. Glad to know I was in fact correct.

LastStandMedia

Then why can't anyone tell me what it is without posting 500 words and links to 90 minute videos? I'll give you an example. "What did Hitler do?" "He killed millions of innocent people, declared war on numerous countries, and undertook a bloody pursuit of world conquest." Now you go: What did JK Rowling say or do? Be that succinct.

Owen S
>>100349358

First off, you’re not dealing with a “JK Rowling is Hitler” person. I’m just sympathetic to the cause. She participates in trans fear mongering. Fear that your child may be tempted by these ideas or that a predatory man will use trans-ness as a shield to enter the spaces of women. Fear that women as a concept could be rendered meaningless. She wrote a whole book about a male cross dressing killer, maybe just a coincidence but seems a little fishy. Is it that different from what any other conservative commentator is saying about trans people? Probably not. But Tucker Carlson didn’t write the biggest young adult book and movie franchise of all time, so the outsized response towards JK makes a little more sense. (125 words) It may not be tweet length, but brevity doesn’t equal truth

Mark Lee

Without doubt, the best ending to an episode yet 🤣
