YouTube has changed their views. We have views on the matter. Meanwhile, Taha has decided to air beef from the group chat. Melissa is an audio elitist, and she's staying out of it. Sabrina is ready to fight.

I love how chaotic the first half of this podcast was! I had no idea about the youtube change, but I do think it's a shame that a view now has less meaning to it. Though I feel like the views only sometimes matter when I'm deciding what to watch. More so when I'm searching for a video on a specific topic, I tend to go for the one with more views. But if it's on my recommendations, I usually decide on what sounds interesting based on title and thumbnail, plus how much time I wanna spend watching a video at that moment. Sometimes I'll actually be intrigued if a video with very little views shows up and end up watching that.

I had not heard anything about this change, it's sad but probably predictable in today's desperation soaked times. I didn't know that the other platforms were so slack with their view counting but I guess it makes sense with short videos where it is easy to know you don't want to watch. It doesn't make sense with longer videos where the introduction might take a while to conclude and your decision to continue might take a while to settle.

I was not aware of the change in how views are counted. As someone who doesn't use tiktok, instagram, facebook, etc. and only consumes any video on Youtube, it really doesn't matter to me. I don't think I've ever vetted anything by the number of views it has, high or low. I rarely even notice the number -- only when I'm confused on something like how many non-music people notice something like angine du poitrine. I'll look at the views then to see if this is just in my local circle, or if it is actually something that blew up. That being said, I completely understand how the view count could matter from a business standpoint. And i further understand that that could negatively impact me as a viewer. I hate the whole incredulous-face cover photo for a video, and am less inclined to click stuff like that just because of how ubiquitous it is. But i know it's done somewhat out of necessity. Sorry for the rambling response.

If it means that long videos get the recognition they deserve then I’m all for it. People kept talking about how shorts outperform long form and duh, you can watch 30 shorts in the space of one long.

personaly I never look at views when decideng if I want to watch something

I wasn't aware of the change, and while I don't look at views to decide what video to watch, I still look at it, and up to know, YouTube's number of views was the one I trusted the most. And about what I look for when choosing a video to watch, I feel like I must be in quite a minority. I actually built along the years a big list of channels I am subscribed to, and I never open the YouTube landing page. I have a bookmark to the subscription feed page, which lists ALL videos of channels I am subscribed to, in CHRONOLOGICAL order. Everyday, I open it and look at the new videos since last time I checked. I look at the title, thumbnail, and sometimes description to decide if I want to watch it eventually. If so, I add it to a gigantic playlist of videos I want to watch later. When I am in the mood to watch a video, I just open my playlist (another bookmark) and choose something in there. I discover new channels either by collabs between channels I am already subscribed to, or rarely I get influenced by the video recommendations after I watched the last video in my playlist.

i was aware of the view change due to a vlogbrothers vid, and it bums me out a little. when i found out i immediately looked for a way to turn off the auto-playback on mobile because i dont like how the thought of just thinking about if i want to watch a video would give a video more attention? especially if its clickbait-y, i dont want to be a contributor of attention to content i dont actually want to watch. I guess the dislike button may get more usage after this lol. As for if inflated view numbers will affect my viewing habits, not really? I think it will just cheapen what a view really means. The main time I actually pay attention to viewcount to decide to watch a video may be for instructional videos for school or DIYs to help determine the likelihood of good information. But when it comes to my subscriptions or Home page, I look at the whole package and if I'm interested in watching. On the flipside, I've noticed that my youtube sidebar sometimes suggests random couple-100view videos of channels I do not know which, I immediately write off anf ignote due to the low view count.
