Our titles change so often that we don't know how to name the aftershows.

Anyway, in this aftershow, the three of us chat about the video, our reading goals, and answer your questions!

This was recorded on Monday Jan 24, 2022.

Lyndsey L. Werner

I think middle grade books are better. I think that romance in adult books really muck up the plot and story. And… (this might be a little bit cynical of me) I think that people who want to make money write middle grade since that’s the age that people are ENCOURAGED to read fun things. So I think that middle grade will grab the best talent. (I seesaw on this a little bit.)

Igor Matkowski

My guess is 1 (As I don't see anyone else writing ther estimations I think that I am the closest) (did i win)

If any of you are looking for great audiobooks, I found Circe and Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller were both 10/10! Both were so captivating that I listened to them each twice through last year... And can't stop recommending them haha

Tia

Also Taha—On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is beautiful but it is very poetic writing. I'd say maybe go with a YA or another adult fiction before diving into Ocean Vuong

Taha Khan

Would you recommend Song of Achilles for me? My friend said she loved it! - taha

Tia

Hmm definitely could be a good one, it's got a bit of boyhood fun & adventures, a bit of gay romance, and builds off of any knowledge you might have of Greek mythology while feeling really relevant and modern (in ideals, still set in the past unlike Percy Jackson)

UmbreonLibris

I second the Song of Achilles audiobook recommendation!

pris

Maybe maybe mayyybbee Taha you're thinking about: Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi?

pris

It's short to read, charming, and philisophical-ish 😋 also I'm guessing 82 books

Thanks for the personal attack, Taha, I felt honored. What I said about reading and not understanding maybe needed a bit more context. I mentioned that I usually have this issue for fiction books, not for non-fiction, not for online articles, not for newspapers. So, for example, when I read non-fiction I can get the idea because I feel there's some very deliberate information that the author wants to transmit and maybe I sort of look out for it, but with fiction is like I get the gist of the story but there are lines of dialogue that I don't remember a character saying or an interaction that I don't remember happening, it's like my brain tries to abstract absolutely everything and deliberately leaves some stuff behind. So it's really annoying when later on there's a reference or a nod to something that happened before and I miss it, or when I read a quote from a book I already read and think "I read this, why can't I remember this quote or put it in context?" There, there is the paragraph. Also, wild guess with the book count: 56

I’ve gotten really into reading comics and graphic novels lately. I realized my library has a HUGE selection of adult graphic novels (like, adult mature, not adult sexual… although sometimes…). Anyways, I’ve been working through the shelves alphabetically. If I’m not feeling a book I’ll skip it, but I feel like I’ve read so many I wouldn’t have otherwise. They’re also so quick and easy to get through, I finish most in one or two sittings.

Sabrina, for holding books one handed, have you considered thumb holders? This is one that I got on amazon (though my thumb is too big to fit and I ended up giving it away). https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B089H9ZHRD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have to third the sentiment that you can stop reading a book if you can't get into it (aren't feeling it). There are way too many good books in the world to spend time on ones you don't enjoy. Unless it is for a class, or work, or something.

Candice

Neil Gaiman's books come in range of...target?...demographics (they're fun to read/listen to regardless of age). There's also a wide range of lengths - short stories to novels to long-ass graphic novel series (Sandman). I'd also recommend the audiobooks he narrates himself - he has a lovely voice for reading aloud, which is convenient since he's called on to do so often.

Taha Khan

yes! that's what I was thinking about - taha

Scarovese

I was also thrown off by Sabrina being able to walk and read... that's not something I am capable of doing :P

Adel but boy

This vide also got me back into reading novels. Not this video but the video this video is about. I read (aka listened to an audio book cause I’m a cheater) “Fahrenheit 451” and as a person who saw the movie first this made me hate Hollywood. The book is so good though it can come off snobbish and the ending is jarring.

Luis

Apart from the editing work, what would've been wrong with the book video being longer? (ie when adding the research)
