Wait what did Taha say before eating the reaper? I don't speak whatever language that was (was it Urdu?)

Mustafa Haddara

He said “bismillah arrahman arrahim”, which is arabic for “in the name of god, the most gracious, the most merciful”, which is what Muslims says before eating.

Luis

Oh that's nice, thanks for the insight!

What do people actually cook with Carolina reapers? (I enjoyed this video/original video as someone with a bizarre spice tolerance. For some reason I can handle really spicy soups but not certain curries/sauces and I have no idea why. Maybe it’s the texture lingering?)

Lyndsey L. Werner

Okay… the meeting in two minutes actually did make me burst out laughing. Whoops!

Bro Taha is truly built different man

I love spicy food, and even Carolina reapers in particular (they've actually got kind of a sweet berry thing going on underneath all the nuclear fire), but I'm not sure that I'd just take a big bite of a dried pepper like that -- that does not sound like a good time. Thanks for being good sports and following through in solidarity.

"We have a meeting???" I died

When you dry chillies the capsaicin spreads out into the flesh and is no longer in just the white pith. So eating them dried meant that they were hotter than if you had tried them fresh.

(Found out on listening to podcast that there are different kinds of spicy-ness. Guess that explains it! I was mostly judging by Asian soups [Thai was where I noticed it but it carried through to Chinese and Japanese].)
