Watch as Lex sings along to many songs she knew from the film Across the Universe and how Nick realizes that The Beatles different style!

Helloooo everyone!

Please enjoy this full album reaction that totally overthrew all of the other options in this month's poll. For good reason.

Surely you'll come for The Beatles, but you'll stay for Lex's sing-a-long fest!

We had an AMAZING time with this and THANK YOU all for voting and supporting us here!

Sending love and light to all of you and yours, Lex, Nick & Marley

NO cover is as good as the Beatles. If you don't stop comparing this to the stupid movie I'm leaving. The Beatles had nothing to do with taking their work out of context for a movie. I want you is NOT about war! It's about John's love for Yoko.

Alden21

Thanks for doing this, I really enjoyed this reaction! You want to hear an amazing McCartney album, put the album "Ram" on a poll. Cheers!

Michael Gray

So happy you are reacting to this fantastic album. It's my 2nd favorite Beatles album. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is my favorite Beatles album.

Debra Brabenec

Love that y'all loved this!! I was 13 when this came out, my sister had gone to college, so the room we had shared was all mine! I got this album and played it a lot- and, while I loved it all, Nick, my favorite was "I Want You!" I think my young teen hormones responded to the rawness of it!😅 I counted the number of repetitions at the end (15) and motioned the cutoff. If you recall, George got the first line of "Something" from the James Taylor song, so it is him singing lead with Paul's harmonies, not Paul and John. My freshman year in high school I was in the dance club and danced (with others) to "Come Together." We wore 1/2 black 1/2 white bell-bottomed jumpsuits and painted our faces to match. It was a really cool dance, and I still remember it! "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is the most upbeat, happy song about a SERIAL KILLER! 😅😅 "Oh Darling" is all Paul singing. He could put the "raunch" in his voice when he wanted to- listen to early songs like "Long Tall Sally" and "She's A Woman." An interesting cover of "Here Comes The Sun" was done by Ritchie Havens- I love it! The vocal harmonies on "Because" and "Sun King" are some of their finest, so I don't even care that the non-english lyrics in the latter are a mish-mash of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and gibberish!! Joe Cocker did a great cover of "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window." The 3 guitar solos near the end of the side have been debated over the years, but I'm pretty sure they are: McCartney, Harrison and Lennon, and the same a second time. Many people thought Clapton played , but Harrison was pretty influenced by him at that time. Looking forward to your future reactions to Rubber Soul (my first LP ever!) , The White Album, and Let It Be! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

Let It Be was recorded before Abby Road but because of some problems it wasn't released until after. Making Abby Road the last Beatles album and the song The End all that more poignant. Couple of things; the guitar solos after the drum solo were Paul, George and John (respectively) rotating, taking turns, in the same room. Must've been a blast to watch that happen. It was John playing the lead as he was singing on I Want You. It was about Yoko, not war.

Doug Fenske

I think Deacon Blues is the Steely Dan song I've heard the most in grocery stores.

ProgRockFan

Sad that Abby Road beat out Steve Hackett, but this was still a good listen with you two. I'd love to hear you guys react to Help in the near future :)

Doug Fenske

Thank you, JK and Nicknlex, so much for sharing your experience with this most amazing album! I had a blast listening to it with you. It's my favorite Beatles album and about my 10th favorite album of all.

JK

I had a fantastic time watching you guys react to this - it’s so great to see you together! A couple of notes on songs: it was George Harrison who wrote and sang Something, as well as Here Comes the Sun. Frank Sinatra, of all people, called Something the best love song ever written. Even John Lennon gave George proper credit for a change, saying Something was the best song on the album. John wrote the bizarre lyrics of Get Together because he was tired of people reading ridiculous stuff into their songs. And finally, did you notice that there is no title or band name on the album? This is the album cover that started the rumor that Paul was dead (because he’s barefoot!). The album cover is so iconic there’s a live webcam on the crosswalk! Take a look online! Many thanks!

Debra Brabenec

Yes, supposedly, Paul was barefoot and dressed in a suit, as he might be dressed in a casket; George was in denim and workboots, as the grave digger; Ringo was dressed in a black suit, as the undertaker; and John was, of course, Jesus in white!

Phillip Bates

I love this album so much. Each member had a major contribution. George shines with "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun", Ringo wrote and sang "Octopus's Garden and it's so much fun, and of course, John and Paul do their thing and both have great songs. This is a masterpiece, in so many ways.

Dave

Their best, IMO. Still surprised this didn't win last time it was up. Not an album but would love to see the "roof top" concert here. Good job, Nick and Lex.

NicknLex

Thank you for always transporting us to your memories, Debbie!! Loved reading them as always!!

NicknLex

Thank YOU, JK! Awesome suggestion and such a great time!!!

Scott Anderson

Finally got a block of time big enough to listen to the whole reaction. So glad I listened to it in its entirety. Really loved all your surprises and loved how the second side caught you off guard. It was always obvious that this piece was going to win in the polls. Sort of unfair to everything else. But the Beatles are the Beatles. if they didn’t invent it then they made it better in some capacity. It would be interesting to think what would happen had they stayed together but I fear George would probably never have had his career breakout and bring us such humanity. It was great that we had them for as long as we had them. Of course losing Lennon who was the real soul in my opinion of the Beatles was and will always be a tragedy. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. I just watched I Want You, on YouTube so glad you released that one to promote Patreon. Hopefully you get some more people sign up and hopefully you get a little closer to that 1K.. Thanks JK for making this suggestion.

Scott Anderson

Thanks for the great synopsis of the record and sharing your memories. I was still only buying 45s and hadn’t had the opportunity yet to invest in albums. Stevie, Dan change that for me. So I caught up with this music when I started playing in rock bands and she’s so heavy was one of her favorite Beatles songs to play.

Lee Haskin

Great suggestion, I hadn't heard this in its entirety in years, so it was a nostalgic listen for me. ❤️

Lee Haskin

I think it's Peg for me, but Deacon Blues is up there.

Lee Haskin

Loved this! Not my favorite Beatles album but it car has its gems. If you thought Maxwell's Silver Hammer was out of place on the album, wait until you get to the White Album (technically called The Beatles). It's highly eclectic and all over the place, many different styles but in my opinion it's better than Abbey Road. I'm sure I'll get some flack for saying that... If you ever find yourself in Vegas, do yourself a favor and see Love from Cirque du Soleil. It's all Beatles music. Just hearing Because at full blast echoing through that theater is worth it. The versions are reworked a bit, but still fantastic. Also to note, this is NOT as good as Across the Universe (in fact it's extremely corny), there was a movie called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. Some of the renditions of the Beatles songs were fun, especially Alice Cooper singing Because and Steve Martin singing Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Aerosmith 's version of Come Together is super good! One more bit of trivia... Nick, the part of You Never Give Me Your Money said reminded you of Fly By Night (which I never even considered!), was also used in Elvis Costello's song Party Girl. Costello and McCartney collaborated on a number of songs, including Costello's hit Veronica. I'm glad you had so much fun with this classic!!

Richard Dobson

And Paul was out of step with the other three, and he had a cigarette in his hand. Spooky!! Also, weren't we supposedly able to hear the words 'Paul is dead' if we played the record backwards? I could never work out how to play mine backwards; obviously I was technologically challenged even back in the day!

Richard Dobson

What a great reaction to a great, great album. This was their last album and last recorded piece of work. Let It Be was recorded before but the band were unhappy with the finished product and struggled to agree on how to mix it. Surprisingly despite all the tensions in the band, they decided to make another and go out with a bang! Abbey Road was that album, and 'The End' literally was the end - until Paul decided to stick 'Her Majesty' on as a bonus! Unknown to Paul, the rest of the band then asked Phil Spector to try and fix the problems with Let It Be, chiefly Paul's 'The Long and Winding Road'. Spector did his thing, Paul went crazy but it was already over for The Beatles as a band, and the album was released to Paul's disgust. I just love this record, and it amazes me how they were able to make such a record while their relationships with each other were falling apart. It's an album full of contradictions - how Paul could write my favourite song 'You Never Give Me Your Money' (about their manager Allen Klein who Paul despised) but then write 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' about a homicidal maniac! How John could produce the epic 'I Want You (She's So Heavy) about his utter infatuation and devotion to Yoko, and yet write off the Paul inspired Long Medley on Side 2 as rubbish even though John's playing and singing on it is great. How George was absolutely fed up with being in The Beatles yet write 'Something' and 'Here Comes The Sun', surely his two greatest songs. I was sixteen when Abbey Road was released and it was the end of an era. To have grown up listening to each successive Beatles release and hear how they developed their music, and shaped the world around them and me, is something I feel privileged to have experienced. Nothing was ever quite the same when they split up.

Richard Dobson

Everyone has their favourite Beatles album Lee. No flak from my direction, it would be great to hear their reaction to The White Album, especially 'Revolution 9'!

Lee Haskin

I appreciate that. I happen to LOVE Revolution 9, but I like weird stuff. 🤣 I also like what's probably considered their second weirdest, "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)." There are very few Beatles songs I don't care for.

JK

I saw that show in Vegas several years ago and was blown away by it. I also own the album and the remixes are amazing! Like a whole new and different Beatles album.

Lee Haskin

Same here! If I remember correctly, George Martin's son helped put it together. Btw, another must-see of you're ever in Vegas again is Ka at the MGM. I've seen it 6 times. The score is phenomenal, and the theater and performance are just incredible. It's a Cirque show but different than the others I've seen.

Debra Brabenec

I'm 3 years behind you, Richard, but I echo your sentiments about our great fortune of growing up with the Beatles!

Stephen Caruso

this album was one of my all time favorites and my mother even loved it - it is so brilliant a 2nd side ever of any album except maybe Pink Floyd pick one in the 70's.. I jhad a really cool experience in 2002 in San Diego and it was a concert at the Embarcadero - A Walk Down Abbey Road with Todd Rundgren Mark Farner of Grand Funk Jack Bruce of Cream Christopher Cross Alan Parsons who was the engineer for Abbey Road - all sang Beatles tunes and from Abbey Road album and they also did their own big hits- we also got a special key chain with the Abbey Road album cover on it.. the rockers all said it was their 1st week on the road doing this particular tour and they pulled it off .....

Stephen Caruso

Lee even though the 1978 move was pretty bad I loved some parts of it and 11 Abbey Road Songs made it in the movie! I saw it in 1978 and it was riding high for RSO as they had Saturday Night Fever Grease and SGT PEPPER and the Bee Gees were the Beatles imitators that were hot at the disco era

Great Scott

just finished this. You spent a lot of time talking about Across the Universe, where you heard a lot of songs done by other artists (or what they might have done back in the day). Allow me to point you to the "fun" film, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, assuming you can find it. Yes, it was panned by critics and a lot of purists. Yes, the story line may be weak. However, they did somehow manage to build a loose plot around as many Beatles songs as they could cram together, and then manage to get an all star cast of actors and singers to play the parts. This included (the great) George Burns, Steve Martin, Peter Frampton, the BeeGees, Aerosmith, Billy Preston, among others. As I say, it's kind of fun to see what they wove together.

Stephen Caruso

I commented too about this under Lee Haskins comments - I did go see it and I did like many of the covers

Lee Haskin

As soon as I read RSO I pictured that little red cow! 😂 I didn't realize how many Abbey Road songs were in there, I haven't seen the movie in ages. I first saw it on TV in the mid 80s, and I later bought the DVD. I used to have the soundtrack. Even though it was corny, it was still fun to watch, and yes, there were some pretty cool covers.

Gary Lewis

I wish I could adquately convey what it was like to hear each new Beatles album when it was released, to hear it in the context of the year of its creation, to hear it virtually simultaneously with an entire generation, and be at once amazed, enthralled, and forever changed. The closest thing that I guess approximates it in terms of shared musical experience today is Taylor Swift based on sheer volume and fanbase passion, but she doesn't have the same holistic cultural impact The Beatles had in everything from appearance to politics, even beyond their cosmic leaps in musical innovation. When I heard Abbey Road for the first time, the announcement of their breakup was still in the future, the imperfect "Let It Be" album hadn't been released, so this was not only the last Beatles album in reality, it was the last Beatles album heard for the first time with untrammeled joy and ability to be awash in their breathtaking creation.

Mark Alexander

Well, everybody pretty much said what I would say. Except Chuck. 🤬 Magnificent reaction, as expected. Don’t forget to put the next Moody Blues album on your list. ❤️

Eric Meredith

Fantastic album. like the both of you, I really did not get a lot of exposure to the Beatles . my parents aside from a couple of their earlier albums, really never played any of their music. I consider myself a casual fan. Most everything I know is from movies and anything I heard on the oldies radio. I must say this album was so good aside from Maxwell's silver Hammer. that one help out of place in the sequencing of the album. glad I sat down and listening to this. always fun getting to share these experiences with you my friends!!!!!

Great Scott

As it's been a while, I rented the video (amazon prime video, $4) and watched it last night. everything stated above by both of us still applies, but I would point out that the cover of Come Together by Aerosmith (that some people have heard, but not the original Beatles version) was created For this movie. Likewise, the great cover of "Got to get you into my life" by Earth Wind & Fire was also created for this movie. I still like the original Beatles versions, but both of these covers received airplay, so there's that.

Jim led50jl

Absolutely love this album. It holds so many memories. I had a fare few arguements at school and even at Art School that I went to later, because I said it was their last album. Everyone argued that "Let It Be" was their last....It wasn't !! Lol ....I was vindicated many years later when it became more widely known that "Abbey Road" was recorded after "Let It Be" but they didn't release "Let It Be" till last. So technically "Abbey Road" is their last and "In The End" kinda made it official ! This album is a true masterpiece. Love every track. Thankyou ! Jim X

Jim led50jl

George Harrison wrote and sang lead on the track "Something" and not John Lennon.... Yes, Paul McCartney sings all the way through on "Oh Darling" ... Listen to another song " She's a Woman" by Paul and you will hear that same vocal change. Jim X ... Footnote edit ... Both movies "A Hard Days Night" and "Help" had Ringo featured as the main story line. It's those movies that got Ringo to be peoples most favourite Beatle. Watch the movies and you will understand. It was his personality that reached so many hearts.

Pete Piraino

The guitar solo at the end of The End was actually John, Paul, and George splitting the solo into thirds, each taking a third of the solo. It was George's idea to do this. Also, this was Ringo's only drum solo in the entire Beatles catalog, as he admitted he hates drum solos.

Laura Moore

The Beatles... hard to imagine four poor kids from Liverpool meeting as teenagers and forming a little band that would revolutionize pop music forever. Over a 7 year period they wrote hundreds of songs without reading or writing music. Then before they turned 30, it was over. Remarkable!

Laura Moore

It is Paul on Oh Darling.

Laura Moore

Late to the party here but "I Want You/She's So Heavy", is about Yoko. The term "heavy" in the 60s/70s meant Deep, thoughtful, thought provoking.

Laura Moore

This blows my own mind, but I was a kid with no allowance to buy records. So listening to music meant listening to my parent's records. They loved the Carpenters and my first time hearing the song "Help" was the Carpenters. I was thrilled when I had my allowance at ten and started buying Beatles' records. John Lennon's journal cry for help on the original. My connection to this complicated man formed instantly. He died my freshman year of college. I was catatonic for days. I couldn't listen to this music for decades. I was embarrassed to admit it, but I knew I was not alone.

Laura Moore

It's actually their final album. Let it Be was recorded live and completed 2 days before starting the sessions for Abbey Road.

Patti Crichton

There wasn't a problem as such with "Let it Be" it was held back so it could be released along with the "Let it Be" movie in 1970 as a "companion piece."

Patti Crichton

"Let it Be" was not recorded live, I think you are thinking of the roof top concert part for the film "Let It Be" it was not recorded in 2 days.

Patti Crichton

I TOO love their "YOU KNOW MY NAME, LOOK UP THE NUMBER" I LOVE it when they have fun doing a humorous song with all the voices they can come up with. The Beatles were ALSO VERY FUNNY and that was PART of the APPEAL they had for us FANS back then. They NEVER took them selves seriously!

Patti Crichton

JK Actually when Frank Sinatra said that "SOMETHING" was the greatest love song ever written, he REALLY said "the greatest love song LENNON AND McCARTNEY ever wrote" TRUE, I was watching that show the night he performed "SOMETHING" When he said that, I said outloud "OH BOY, I HOPE GEORGE isn't watching this, OR hears about it." My mom was on the couch and said, "why did you say that?" I turned around and told her, "Because, GEORGE wrote that song! " Her response was, "uh oh, OH Dear!" LOL!

Patti Crichton

DEBRA I HOPE NicknLex will do a reaction to "THE WHITE ALBUM" so they can hear how REALLY RAUNCHTY and SCREAMY Paul's vocals can be!!

Doug Fenske

Thank you, Richard, for sharing all this insight and your experiences. Fascinating. This is easily my favorite Beatles album. The only other ones I like enough to have purchased are Sgt. Pepper, Rubber Soul, and Revolver. Incredible music.
