HELLO ALL!

So... we came full throttle with something that would be IMPOSSIBLE to react to on YouTube given the band's well-known, blocking-loving member (if you know, you know).

Sit with us as we REDISCOVER the song Hotel California, and officially deem this our favorite listening of it. Truly like a first time! Most of the rest of the album was also a first listen, so ENJOY!

Lots of love and appreciation for your patience and support,

Lex, Nick & Marley

FULL ALBUM: The Eagles - Hotel California

Comments

Stephen Caruso

I love the Eagles before Joe Walsh and after.. after this album Timothy B Schmit joined them - he was on Poco with Jim Messina and he also sang on 3 Steely Dan albums.. The Eagles are one of my all time favorites..when this came out I was in Greeley Colorado on my own at 18..

Thoroughly enjoyed this session. Yes, you made an excellent choice. It's so fun to witness you younguns appreciating the great music of the '70s. In the '80s and '90s I "wore out" the 1975 greatest hits album (with the skull) so that I don't really even want to hear those songs again. (They're all fantastic songs, though!) After doing that I finally started digging into the rest of their catalog and I now love the Hotel California and The Long Run albums. They've grown on me over the last 25 years. This album really pulls at my heartstrings. The first few songs are kind of a bit stronger in general, but now I enjoy all these songs equally. I like the ebb and flow of the energy level throughout the whole album and prefer to listen to it only as a whole. I hope these deeper album tracks grow on you. Pop this in when you're on a long drive. It works great for driving around in the Western US where you are located! The country-tinged rock...

Thank you for an in depth listen and heartfelt Patreon reaction to a super classic. They were a great band and the addition of Joe Walsh added another great guitar to the mix. Although the departure of Bernie Leadon was necessary he was no slouch as a founding member and contributor. This was the last album that featured the founding member bassist and singer of those really high notes Randy Meisner, who departed for a solo career. RIP Randy. Don Felder wrote the music for Hotel California but the lyrics are by Don Henley and the awesome Glenn Frey, and those two guys really the heart and soul of the Eagles. RIP Glen Frey who left us way too soon. An interesting fact at the time was Steely Dan had out the Royal scam with the song Everything you Did, that features a Becker lyric “ turn up the Eagles, The neighbors are listening”. This was a reference to Walter Becker‘s girlfriend who listened to the Eagles and played them all the time. So Henley and Frey added a responding lyric that referenced Steely Dan. “ they stab it with their STEELY knives, but they just can’t kill the beast. There was definitely a friendly rivalry between the two bands. When this came out, I was a junior in high school driving a 67 Chevelle with a quadraphonic stereo. All my energy and resources were put into music either playing in the band I was in, or buying and listening to records. Those were the days.

No one believes me when I say this, but I saw The Eagles when they were the opening act for Three Dog Night!

Just finished hearing your reaction, and I agree they front loaded the greatest songs. That happened with most of their albums, which is one reason their Greatest Hits album - which only had the best songs - was the best selling album of the 20th Century (#2 was Thriller by Michael Jackson). Nick, here’s what it was like to live then - every day was an exciting new discovery. Now we’re being forced to go backwards to earlier, more repressive times. Not a great time to be a woman or minority. And all those decisions are being made by people from my own generation, which is especially galling. Anyway, revisiting classic albums with the two of you is like listening to them for the first time!

JK

I also had a quadraphonic stereo! For about five minutes, until my brother blew out a speaker. But yes, Friday was record store day, to see the new releases. I went there right after school. This album, The Royal Scam, Songs in the Key of Life, Station to Station, Hejira, Silk Degrees, The Pretender, Turnstiles, Blondie, Year of the Cat - so much of my hard earned cash went to vinyl in 1976!

I saw Steve Martin open up for the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. He played the banjo and told obtuse jokes and he had a toy arrow through his head. Unfortunately the Eagles never came to My fair city. I saw Starcastle open for Gary Wright. Starcastle was as close as I ever got to seeing YES

We are definitely stumbling around with some very poorly reasoned decisions being made, and disguised as freedoms. There is no music industry that is functioning the way it used to as a healthy place for expressing ideas, empathy and protest. But hope remains and music is always a bridge.

Hey guys, I would like to compliment you guys on a fantastic job with this video. It was really fun to watch and listen to, and to me I think it's your best one yet. You guys seem to be getting better and better (not that you were bad before) but I really enjoy you guys' sense of humor and your technical breakdowns of the songs. Even though I've been listening to this music for decades, I still learn something every time I watch one of your videos. And every time I see you guys react to something for the first time I think about how the music sounded to me when I first started listening to it and how magical it was. 1976 was a great year for music with Hotel California being right there at the top with other epic albums such as Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of Life, Steve Miller Band Fly Like an Eagle, Heart Dreamboat Annie, Aerosmith Rocks, Kansas Leftoverture, Blue oyster Cult Agents of Fortune and who can forget Frampton Come Alive, the best selling album of 1976. I was 14 years old and it was the first year I started buying albums as my first album I ever bought was KISS Destroyer, and boy what a fantastic album that was as well. From there I would explore much greatness from Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd to Ted Nugent's first album and many more going to 1977 when Steely Dan Aja came out, which quickly became my favorite of them all. You could tell back then that these guys were on another level and I knew even then with these albums and many others that I was listening to the greatest music of all time.

Greeley was a great college town back in the 70's even though it had 100,000 cows that smelled up the town every time the wind shifted

Stephen Caruso

the funny thing about New Kid in Town is that when it was released in December 1976 I was the new kid in town I had just moved to Greeley from Maryland a couple of months before!

mbatten

Also have to mention Boston's first album being a 1976 album, probably the only non-compilation album ever made that was nothing but huge hits all the way through.

David Hess

New kid in town is my favorite Eagles song, I can't tell you why is a very close second, the song new kid in town won them best vocals of the year award the year the album was released.

David Hess

New kid in town, you look in her eyes the music begins to play, my favorite part of the song, Glenn Fry's vocals are really good.

David Hess

Joe Walsh said that all of the guitar solos were spontaneous, not planned on the Hotel California album

Dave

Love reading the comments here, Great info. Thanks Scott, JK, Doug, Stephen, David.

Don Henley called the first EAGLES album, "Psychedelic Country." The addition of Joe Walsh gave the group a 4th lead singer and a kick ass guitarist. Walsh called this album, "The best guitar album he ever made." They are fabulous musicians and I am glad you are getting in deeper with them.

Gary Lewis

NicknLex as musicians will appreciate this tidbit: The chord progression of "Hotel California" is identical to Jethro Tull's "We Used To Know" from their incredible 1969 album "Stand Up". The Eagles opened for Tull when they first toured as a new band in '71-'72, and must have subconciousñy picked up on those chords...

Franck Thibault

That was my 1st time listening to the album! Really good! You know Nick, I never picked up on the reggae on Hotel California! In 1976, 2112 came out too!

Jonathan Egrie

The shame of hearing Eagles now is that Glenn Fry is gone. I believe he died 10 years ago in 2016. He is and will always be my favorite in this band. I just love his and the simple way he plays the guitar. So, RIP Glenn Fry. You are missed.
