you made me laugh when you said you can't beleive you didn't know this band...I'm reaching 60 in 2023 and I discovered them last year THANKS TO YOU !!!!!! Now I've got all the records, including Donald's and Walter's. It's difficult to listen to something else now in my car, and by the way, it's because of you I'm on Patreon to support you. Love you.

Michael Trogdon

I heard that one Peg solo was actually Walter's solo. That's why he was looking uncomfortable. Haha

Michele

“When Lexie comes home - so good. She’s the pride of the neighborhood”. Lol That was quite a birthday homecoming for you both! And your return has been great! Always happy with Steely Dan. I almost included “Josie” with the She’s Leaving Home At Last” marathon because it continues the “home” theme and it is sooo good. Thanks. Still watching. ✨🤪

Michele

Nick said it. Their music is so complex but not robotic. In this documentary, it was said that they took it to perfection and then beyond to sound improvised almost. Wow. Past perfection. Love this. Thanks ✨🤪

Buddy Stewart

I just joined your patreon tonight because I wanted to see you react to this documentary. I've seen it several times, and I was pretty sure you guys would find it super interesting. I'm glad to see that you did. The detail Donald and Walter applied to getting these songs recorded the way they wanted them to sound, was crazy. They had a vision and were not going to accept anything less than the full realization of it. I really admire that about them.

NicknLex

It really is admirable! Like I said, I was worried I’d find them too snobby based on the comments, but on the contrary! Thanks for joining and glad you got to enjoy with us! Can’t wait for everything else we have to share with you! :)

NicknLex

Yeah, prior to this, I’d never understand what they meant when they “passed perfection”, but it’s genius! That way it doesn’t sound so boxed-in! Thanks for watching with us! ❤️

NicknLex

It does continue the theme!! Nick found it awesome that it’s their favorite song of the record, too!

Mark Alexander

This is really great! I also liked in the public Steely Dan reaction video you both mention how you don't necessarily focus on the lyrics. First listens often mean the vocals and lyrics are just another instrument track. When listening to great music, the first listen is non-linear, jumping tracks as they catch your interest. As you relisten, you are more likely to focus on single tracks. For example, at a certain point, you listen to Close to the Edge so you can hear the baseline throughout. These listens are "in time." As some point, you listen in a "timeless" mode. in other words, you know the song so well that as you listen linearly, you are also listening timelessly because you know in every moment the whole song, and that creates a new resonance of incredible listening. You are listening from the total viewpoint of Soul.

I’ve seen this doc. 4 times and you two made it so fresh again. Thanks so much.

come together

Just started this, and I'm glad to see the joy you are having already. I've seen it before, but seeing it through your eyes is special.

come together

There is some music where I hit an over-saturation point, hearing too many times in a short period of time, or whatever. But that has never happened with Steely Dan. I've heard most of their music in the hundreds or thousands of times. And it's funny, it seems to get better.

come together

I agree that a Miles Davis doc should be on your list to view. There was a period of time where his late 50's- to mid 60's discs were on heavy rotation in my house. The heavy fusion of the Bitches Brew era, I had to be in a certain mood to listen to. But at times I enjoyed it immensely. I had about 10 albums of his.

Scott Anderson

What a blast! I had to wait years to see this kind of in depth profile. When Can’t Buy A Thrill first came out all I had was a junky little record player that would only play a 45. My mother had a stereo that I permanently borrowed. My mother who never listen to it she wa. My dad bought it for so she could listen to the Bible. So I took it instead and started listening to Steely Dan. I remember looking at the liner cover reading all the notes looking at the pictures trying to figure out who is who. That was in late 1972. So it’s great to see how excited you are by saying this in depth personal look at Wally and Donald. It’s hard to advise you where to go next there’s still so much to do and it’s all pretty amazing. At some point you should listen to some of Walter solo work as I think he gets overlooked more than Donald. It’s great to relive all my emotions and memories watching you guys listen to this music with such an open heart. Feels like sharing very special. Can’t wait to see what you do next.

steve nesfield

Wow watched that before but it’s so much better watching with friends meaning you two 🤣. Such an incredible insight into the album. Don’t you jut love Bernard Purdie. NicknLex

NicknLex

Dan L.

So much fun! Now I’ve watched your reaction 4 times.

Walter Gill

Hey Nick & Lex, Well, You had noticed that it was from a tv series called Classic Albums on VH1 Classic from around 2008-2013 or so and it can of moved to AXAS TV a few years after and I know that you're enjoying this episode so much!! But, Wait till you see the Bob Marley episode. You'll gonna freak and enough said!! I'm kind of glad that you let us Groupies watch full docs & concerts!! I may seen some of the docs before but there will be new ones that I may have missed for one reason or another and I don't want to forget about those concerts that may be so classic & so exciting to me and I can't wait to rock & react with you!! Hope to hear from you soon!! Keep Rockin'!! P.S. Hey Guys, I hope that you like the extra extended version of this episode that never aired on tv!!!!!!!

Eric Meredith

I had such a great time with this. Thanks so much my friends!

NicknLex

Thank YOU for sharing this with us! :)

NicknLex

OMG can't wait to see the Bob Marley one! We're HUGE fans of his (hence our dog's name: Marley). Thanks for the head's up on that one and for all of your support on the channel, Walter! We love having you and can't wait to share everything else we've got coming for everyone! Love, Lex

NicknLex

So sweet of you, Steve! We love that you consider us friends! Thanks for sharing with us. I know Nick would love that Josie Live!

NicknLex

We're so grateful to have you here to share these moments with, Scott!

Walter Gill

Thanks you two and I hope that like my input & or info about what or how I had grew up on what I'd know when it comes to the music that I really do love and even with docs as well!! I know that there will be concerts, docs & music that I haven't never ever heard before or that I haven't heard in years and I'm so pumped and I can't wait to go on that journey with you both!! I know that you're doing studio versions of songs before reacting to live versions of the song and I've got an awesome live version of Dream Theater's The Count Of Tuscany from 2011 and you need to PLEASE do a reaction to that video and I'll bet that she will be singing along by the last few minutes of the song and you both would get very emotional by the end of the song!! So, Keep some tissues near by just in case, lol!! Hope that you will enjoy the video and my wisdom that I can bring to guys with my favorite bands or whatever else I can bring to your channel!! Thanks again and hope to hear from you soon!! Here's the link to the video; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED8_xaxeiWk

This was a lot of fun guys thanks!

Mike Coless

Here's a video showing Jay Graydon talking about and playing the guitar solo from Peg:

Todd Michelfelder

I love your reactions and this full reaction to one of my all time favorite albums “Aja” was excellent!!👏👏 I was just wondering if I could make a request for a song by Logins and Messina, “AngryEyes“. I think you would really enjoy it!! Keep up that fantastic work!!!

Cappy Petri

I have been a huge fan of SD since the 70’s and Aja is on top of my Top 10 albums of all time. I soooo much enjoy the reactions of others when they finally “get it” and Aja becomes something special in their lives as well. I’ve seen this documentary many time and enjoyed it just as much sharing it with both of you. You recognize the genius of Walt & Don. Enjoy your life from this point on because it has changed… and all for the better as there is still so much more Dan for you to explore. And an FYI. Just a few weeks ago, Steely Dan released their 1st new Live album in 25 years and Fagen released a “Live Nightfly” album as well. Thank you Nick & Lex.

Michele

Hi Cappy. I already sent them the live Steely Dan CD (Eastern Corridor) but not the live Nightfly. Thanks for your comment. ✨🤪

NicknLex

Cappy, just like you said: our lives HAVE changed! Most of what we play in our free time right now is Steely Dan. In fact, yesterday morning we blasted it while making our coffee and again while exercising in the evening. Goes well with anything we do and we absolutely LOVE that we discovered this band together... and with all of you! Thanks for being here and for your comment! :) Love, Lex

NicknLex

Thank you again for that, MM!! Love!!!

Rudi Becker

I remember exactly to "experience" new LPs like you did; I started in the early 70s and could only afford to buy an LP once in a while, but then it was played and played, studying the lyrics, names of musicians and also read about producers and who else was involved. Still do this nowadays, but sometimes it's hard on CDs with my 61 year old eyes :-)

Vince G

It was fun watching this with you guys! I remember when you did your Peg reaction and thought you'd really love seeing this awesome in depth look at Aja. It's so worth watching many times over. It would've been so cool if they had Jay Graydon on it too but oh well. And it was so hilarious when they were listening to the other solos and Donald said."kinda speaks for itself". And is it just me but doesn't Don have Ray Charles mannerisms when he's playing? So cool you've been able to discover Steely Dan! I'm a new patron(been subbed for a while now) and look forward to more cool stuff from you both! Have you checked out SD's album The Royal Scam yet? It's awesome of course!

Buddy Stewart

You guys should do Steely Dan Plush TV Jazz Rock Party 2000. This video focuses on a special concert, recorded live in January 2000 at the Sony Studios in New York City, New York and features tracks from their (at the time) unreleased album Two Against Nature but also contains additional documentary footage. Hey, Buddy. I actually just sent them this DVD. Hopefully, N&L have learned most of the tunes by the time they watch it. Great concert. Thanks. ✨🤪

Kenn Sisson

Thanks so much for reacting to this! As someone noted above, this is from the "Classic Albums" series. It was a British production, shown on VH1 here in the US when originally broadcast, and this episode was definitely one of the best! You can read all about it, and see a full list of the episodes, in the Wikipedia entry on the series. That entry says that DVD releases of each episode include additional material not included in the original 50-minute shows. They're apparently all on Amazon Prime Video, but only some of them are watchable for free with an Amazon subscription.

Luke D

Wow. Not sure why I never saw this, but amazing. Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot.
