This was requested by a fellow subscriber SIDECAR DOG & WOODY through Buy Me A Coffee and when we attempted to upload it to YouTube it was immediately blocked.

Though we attempted to dispute it to no avail. So he has the link to view it here and we're sharing it with all of you guys! :)

I've still not made my way all the way through the Dream Theater catalog, as a matter of fact, barely started (maybe 8-10 songs). But one thing I've learned is how to pick out Mike Portnoy's work on other music outside of DT.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

You really can't go wrong with Transatlantic. Especially their 1st 2 albums. Many thanks for this :)

Merry Christmas. Thanks guys. Yes, it was recorded during Covid. This was a different sound for Transatlantic. They are getting away from their seventies sound. Unfortunately their earlier stuff is filled with 30 minute epics, so finding a song under 10 minutes was a challenge. The album Whirlwind is one song clocking in at 77 minutes :) Their best songs are All of the Above from SEMPTE and Stranger in My Soul from Bridge Across Forever.

By the way, this song is about the philosophy of Ayn Rand called Objectivism and her famous novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. This philosophy was extremely popular in the fifties and sixties and it stresses the importance of rugged individualism, meritocracy, and selfishness. Neil Peart of Rush had many songs about this philosophy (Free Will is one). Being believers in a higher power, Portnoy and Morse reject this atheistic way to view the world.

This is a good song ... BUT ... as fan of the very first hour, knowing all albums and having seen them twice live, I must say, I was a little disappointed by the new Transatlantic album. It is ok somehow, but there a the big moments missing ... this trend was already on the last album. For me Brigde across forever and Whirlwind are their masterpieces. Seeing them playing Whirlwind live in one piece was breathtaking .... especially if you stand right in front of MR Mike Portnoy. Whirlwind is definitely one of the best concept albums of the new century. Even though being critical doesn't hold me back on planning to see them live on 24.Jul.2022 in COLOGNE and the ticket for this is one of my Christmas presents for my son :-) Fun fact in the end: since we are already off today I took a nice long walk, listening to .... The Flower Kings, main band of Roine Stolt, guitarist of Transatlantic ... it's on my requesting list for 2022/23 :-)

PS: Merry Christmas ... dinner is at 18.00 , then presents .... and you all have to wait tomorrow, other countries, other manners :-)

I agree with your suggestion 500 percent!

That's right, listen to Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, Bigelf, Sons of Apollo and you hear whose on the drums. Winery Dogs is more Rock, he's onI ly using a small kit and in Metal Allegiance he plays metal. I really love his style, his attitude playing live, but as critical listener I have to say, sometimes he's "going over the top", it's just too much. Best example on the cover CDs he did with Neal Morse Band is the version of Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street. When this happens, my son (drummer and huge Portnoy fan) blame MP for that, we say, he has the song "verholzt" - german word, which I cannot translate (yet) :-) Since you're looking your way through DT catalogue, which is soo big, maybe you want recommendations of someone, who knows each single song ? And maybe some recommendations, which songs to look at live ? DT was such a great live band with MP, unfortunately I waited until 2000 to see them for the first time, but then I did not miss one tour and it was always worth the money. Check this one setlist of an evening with in 2002, I was drunk by all this great music: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dream-theater/2002/philipshalle-dusseldorf-germany-13d6cded.html

Merry Christmas Nick & Lex, Love this song and have the complete edited version of their latest album but it's still all good and you won't be disappointed either no matter what version of the album you get!! Transatlantic doesn't disappoints and speaking of; My birthday will be coming up in about a month and hopefully you could please honor some of my request and one of them is #nicnlexrequest The Whirlwind by Transatlantic and this was the song that brought me to tears since The Spirit Carries On by Dream Theater & The Prince Of Peace by TSO and that speaks volumes about how music makes me feel and if you want me to send the link right now then I will and hope that you can make it through the whole song without tearing up!! Hope to hear from you soon!! Thanks & Happy New Year!! - <3 <3 Here's the link for the song ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryiegc12f3M
