I've been voting for this album ever since you listed it! Each song was inspired to a short ghost story. The stories were printed in the concert programme when SW toured with The Raven. The title track and Drive Home each have their own animated film which provides a deeper understanding of what the songs are about. They are a 'must watch'. Doing a reaction to these videos might be a good way of introducing the songs to a wider YouTube audience. The Raven contains six exceptionally good tracks, but I think Hand Cannot Erase is even better. SW then followed up with a mini album called '4 and a half' which contains the songs that he wasn't able to put on the main albums! The video animation to Routine (from HCE) is a heartbreaker! Subsequent albums 'To The Bone' and 'The Future Bites' are very good but quite different. SW has moved his music on. He doesn't look back.

In preparation to your reaction, I listened to the record to be able to compare your reaction to mine :-) Basically I have to say, this album does not have one mediocre song, they are either good or very good. My personal favourites are Luminol, The Holy Drinker and The Watchmaker ... I think this CD is SW's masterpiece, everything before and after doesn't come close.... So I'll continue to watch you enjoying it .. I have the DVD/CD Drive home, which has The holy drinker, The Watchmaker, The Raven .... plus Insurgentes as live videos ... awesome music ... on both record all music excellently played, but my favourite is Marco Minnemann .. what a drummer .... good luck he didn't join Dream Theater, so we are able to see him in all those bands he's playing with. The whole Raven album is a perfect mix of SW's ideas mixed with all the great music he listened to while he did the remixes. maybe THE prog album

My favourite album of all time and I'm so glad you finally get to enjoy it in full and forever onwards! Some will say "Hand.Cannot.Erase" is better but for me "The Raven..." is Wilson's masterpiece. The perfect prog album and everything he was trying to achieve and some. Your reaction was a joy to watch.

heard this all the way thru! Happy to share this hour with you. Special

SIDECAR DOG & woody

THE best prog album, so far, of the 21st century. I first heard this at the beginning of the pandemic, and I could not stop listening to this for about a month (I had a lot of free time:)

Falcongal

Wow this was fantastic!! I’ve listened to most Porcupine Tree and some of Wilson’s other projects and solo work but I hadn’t heard this one. I loved the whole thing and it was cool to share the first listen with you both. I did catch Porcupine Tree on tour last year and they were incredible.

SIDECAR DOG & woody

Ps, this album, thematically, is all about living ghosts.

Now, you must see the animated version of Drive Home and The Raven Who Refused to Sing...Very Emotional!

Rolling Ronnie

As others have said, you must check out the Owl House Studios animations on YouTube for Drive Home, Raven and (even more emotional) Routine. they're incredible and totally complement the music

Tony Soblotne

It was me who sent it to you first! I finally had a chance to sit down and watch you watch this. I had a smile on my face the whole time watching you have a smile on your faces, lol! I think this album, along with Riversides Shrine of New Generation Slaves are the 2 best albums made in the 21st Century and they are both from 2013, a great year for music! I am so glad you agree with me about this one!

Murdock Moriarty

I agree, this is phenomenal music. It makes you want to listen on and on just to find out what happens next in the music.

Lorrie Simcoe

Wouldn't you know it, Alan Parsons was associate producer and recording engineer of this album.

Richard Dobson

Wow, what an album. I've known about Steven Wilson for a long time, you guys have helped me get into Porcupine Tree, but I had never heard any of his solo records. This was remarkable. I know we can identify flavours of Yes or Genesis or Floyd or whoever, but Steven puts his own spin on things. The music on this album is just so tasteful, immaculately played and produced. Light and shade, power and tenderness, I enjoyed every second and have just placed my order with Amazon!

Mike Miner

What in the holy hell... why have I never even heard of Steven Wilson. This album didn't "grab" me from the start, but I keep coming back to it. Now I can't stop thinking about it.

BeatTurtle

yes, this album is awesome. Saw this twice live, when I didn't know Steven Wilson. It was in quadriphonia, and all the musicians were so good.....I was like you at moments, about Marko Minneman, I had to pinch myself sometimes in the show because I realised I was listening only to the drums.... thanks a thousand times for this reaction, love you

First you guys introduced me to Porcupine Tree and I instantly fell in love with them. This is my first intro to Steven Wilson's solo work. I honestly don't know which I like better, or if it even matters. I loved that I could pick out little "tributes" to ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, etc. And I am absolutely impressed with his unique chord progressions, which is something that really makes a song special for me. From beginning to end this was a flawless masterpiece. Can't wait to hear this again. Btw there's no way I can pick a favorite here. Each track was spectacular. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Nick Beggs was a founding member of an 80's British new wave band that had a big hit with an awesome jazzy bass line. Every musician in this line up for Steven Wilson is absolutely top notch. This is like the Steely Dan of modern prog. I can hear a distinct CSN influence in some of the backing harmony vocal parts.

Lee Haskin

you haven't done it yet, I recently listened to Watchmaker with the lyrics." When he sings "I never really loved you But I'll miss you anyway" I burst out crying. And lines like "you were meant to be temporary" and then what happens at the end - I cannot listen to this without bawling my head off. I believe it's the saddest song I've ever heard.

Robert Vincent

I have seen Nick Beggs twice, once with John Paul Jones (opening for King Crimson, no less) and once with Steve Hackett. Genius musician.

Next time before you post something so awesome like this, can you give us 48 hours so we can take time off work? Like, how can I focus on my job today knowing this has been posted? I'm Googling "sudden illness" right now. When you do The Way Up by Pat Metheny we will all need to take a week off.

Joss Oakes

Ok. So. I'm so excited about this. I'm sitting with my sketchbook, hanging out with my friends, and about to begin a new musical journey. Let's go !!! ( I'll be back with a few thoughts 🙂)

Gracias por el vídeo. Me encantaría qué hicierais uno del álbum Brave, de Marillion. El álbum es de 1994 pero hay una edición de 2018 remezclada por Steven Wilson. Es un gran álbum progresivo. Un saludo desde España.

Scott Anderson

How cool was that 😎! As much as I like when you react to the music I grew up with that has been played throughout my whole life. it’s really great to hear new stuff that I didn’t have any idea about. This was great hard to pick a favorite. I will have to relished a few more times. Love the varied instrumentation the flute and alto saxophone. The bass on the first track is great. Good guitar throughout and great narratives and storytelling. Nice to see you both reacting. I appreciate the effort Alexia makes with her back hurting. Wishing you healing. Thanks again. It’s fun to share music. 🎶

That was AMAZING !! It was beautiful and challenging in equal measure. It was so interesting hearing him use his musical influences like instruments, adding so much inspiration and color. I can't wait to dig in and listen again and again. Thanks for sharing this album with us. Cheers !!

Thorsten Spinger

Hi NicknLex, thank you for listening to this. I recognized myself by your reaction when I heard that for the first time. You absolutely must listen to the entire albums Hand.Cannot.Erase and Grace for drowning. The 2nd is very dark and oppressive but also a masterpiece

Warren Butson

This album will go down as a masterpiece of prog. Wilson totally succeeded in matching the masterpieces of prog he grew up with to perfection without pastiche but with heart feel and songwriting mastery. Sublime from start to finish and so pleased you felt it the way we all did and couldn’t believe he made us feel like we did in the 70s

Mike Miner

Have they mentioned The Way Up or was just some wishful thinking? That would be amazing.

Mike Miner

As a fan of prog, how have I never even heard of Steven Wilson? This is a treat, thank you!

Mark

Hey, we know they love Pat. Sounds like you agree that The Way Up must be heard. I've been suggesting the track for over a year. Couldn't hurt if you make the request as well. I know they would both love it.
