FULL ALBUM: Genesis - A Trick of the Tail

So so happy you are reacting to this record. Listening to it for nearly 5 decades now and NEVER EVER tire of it. And beginning to end is really the best way to experience it. Enjoy!!! The beverage... iced tea? Or maybe cassis soda?

Eagles Rule

Second that opinion on Seconds Out. One of the very best live albums out there. Listened to it for about 2 straight years and still come back to it about once a year if I'm in the mood to rock out.

Eagles Rule

You should add Seconds Out for a chance at album of the month and if it wins do both sides😊. Come on don members this would be a great reaction. You could see the writing on the wall for Steve Hackett. On e more album and he was gone. The Musical Box toured this album and Wind and Wuthering about 7 months ago and it was amazing. They are touring Lamb Lies Down on Broadway next month. I used to think Lamb was there weakest album as well. The only true way to be converted to it is to sit down and listen to it with no distractions while reading the lyrics. The music does serve the lyrics but the poetry and emotions really come through. It's an album that requires alot of work but the payoff is immense. Probably why it was not well received and eventually led to a parting of the ways. Peter was also starting his family around now and wanted a more friendly schedule for himself.

Your feelings about Squonk are interesting. I recall it being the most-played song from the album on the radio when it came out, and at the time I liked it very much. But as time passed, I found myself skipping over it whenever I played the whole album, it just didn't do anything for me. And Robbery, Assault & Battery is a song I've heard many say doesn't belong on this album. It's another one I liked at first, but later I didn't think much of.

Mark Alexander

Tony Banks is a very humble man. For me, he IS Genesis.

Mark Alexander

BTW, put on your poll: Thick as a Brick, Olias of Sunhillow, and … The Best of Bread (1973). Oh and what the heck: Wind and Wuthering by Genesis.

Richard Dobson

It's very interesting to hear your comments on these classic album reactions guys. We all approach this album from different time perspectives. I joined the Genesis journey from Foxtrot so this was the new album without Peter! Shock! Horror! Will it be OK? Can Phil step up to the vocal plate? Of course he could, so now we move onto the songs. Will they be as good as when PG was there? In most cases yes of course, but for me 'Robbery....' was a disappointment and because (back in these dark ages) it was difficult to skip tracks on a turntable I switched off a bit when it was playing. Squonk I always loved, and still do. I have a feeling it may grow on you as you enjoyed 'Los Endos' (The End) and the melody it finishes with is the melody from 'Squonk'. I'm with you both on 'Entangled', it is beautiful (written mainly by Steve Hackett with Tony Banks adding the keyboard second part) and in my Top 5 Genesis songs. Please let's do Foxtrot on Patreon, Side 1 before 'Suppers Ready' is brilliant. Oh my, I'm talking vinylese now!

Debra Brabenec

My friend's band played "Squonk" so I really liked it a lot already before I ever heard the whole album. It's about a mythological creature from the wilds of Pennsylvania, so the lyrics will help you understand it, and also appreciate Phil's great vocals on the song. The same goes for "Robbery, Assault and Battery", which tells a story of criminals trying to rob a bank, and Phil's regional (not sure which) accent is really fun. The middle section is great, and Mike Rutherford's bass playing is nuts! I could tell you both brightened up during that part. Such a wonderful album- you will love listening to it without stopping between songs- it has a nice flow to it. 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

this was exciting to sit down and listen to. I had only heard Ripples until now. I must say there is some amazing music here. I do miss Peter Gabriels

presence a little bit.. and the songs you did not love, I agree musically did nothing for me as well! the last song was amazing! really loved it! Overall, I did enjoy. but I still enjoy Selling England by the pound and Foxtrot a lot more.. I will continue to listen to this album and im sure I will grow to love it!

Doug Fenske

Yes, please do Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound! Finish them up so you can enjoy them freely!

Doug Fenske

I second Wind & Wuthering!

Hi Guys, Love "Squonk" Love the story and the emotion of Phils vocals as he tells the story. The connection with this track to Los Endos is brilliant as is the connection to Dance on a Volcano, and they ended their concerts with Los Endos during The Trick Tours in the 70's . I always play Squonk loud and it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. For me it was a powerful track. However, I have been listening to it before Genesis turned to commercial pop and for over 45 years now. I am surprised Squonk didn't blow you away, but it's all good. Maybe when you know the emotional story things may sound different ? Byeee Jim X

Jim led50jl

Play Squonk followed immediately by Los Endos .... Oops ! Lol You love Squonk, you just don't know it yet .... Play both tracks .. and you will understand. You loved the finale moments ... That's Squonk !! also the words in the fade out .. is from Suppers Ready. Good eh ? Lol Byeee Jim X

Wind and Wuthering is another "must" for N&L to hear

ProgRockFan

Dance On A Volcano was also included in Los Endos :)

Great reaction, but I was a bit surprised you didn't like Squonk. It's one of my favorite tracks on this record, but maybe it's because of the lyrics. I think they are fantastic and kinda sad. My least favorites are Trick of the Tail and Robbery, Assault and Battery. I think Phil was trying to incorporate some comedy into the record, maybe like Harold the Barrel (although I find that song more sad than funny) and failed miserably. From this album forward, I don't feel they ever had another record that was perfect from start to finish. Los Endos includes pieces of Dance on a Volcano and Squonk. What I think is extremely cool about this track is that Phil sings "There's an angel standing in the sun waiting to get back home" as a nod to Peter Gabriel and Supper's Ready. Thanks for this video!

Calvin Boaz

Robbery, Assault, and Battery is one of my favorite tracks from the album.

Calvin Boaz

Steve Hackett was not an original member of Genesis. He replaced Anthony Phillips. Of course, Phil Collins was not an original member either. I believe he was drummer #4.

Phillip Bates

This might be my favourite Genesis album, but it's a close call with "Wind and Wuthering" and "And Then There Were Three", but I love all of Genesis. Selling England, Lamb Lies Down, Duke, Abacab and Genesis are all bangers. For a live album, Seconds Out is amazing. Regarding Squonk, it took me quite a few listens to appreciate it. I first heard it on Seconds Out live album and it opens the album and is followed by Carpet Crawlers, which I love! "Robbery, Assault and Battery" was written by Tony, trying to give the lyrics the fun vibe that Peter often did with his lyrics and Phil sang it in a character-type voice. The drumming on Los Endos is next level. Tony Banks is one of my favourite keyboardists. The musicianship of all the members is top-notch. I saw Steve Hackett live doing a Genesis experience and it blew me away, as Steve really amps up the guitar parts. Incredible. I've always been a fan of Peter and Phil. Both have great voices and they continued to work together even after Peter left Genesis. Great album and great reaction.

James

I am completely with you on ‘The Lamb’, too lyrically dense for me as well. For that reason it falls way down my list of favourite Genesis albums. Squonk is one my favourite tracks on the album, but can see your point of view on ‘Robbery’ as I would agree that it is the weakest song on the album. I think Squonk needs more listens, which is true of all 1970’s Genesis to be honest as typically there is a lot going on, and it really takes a few listens before you ‘Get It’. ATOTT is my favourite Genesis album, and is on heavy rotation. When Rick Beato did his top 50 albums of all time, he put ATOTT at no 13. Selling England by the Pound is my second favourite Genesis album. Now I am a member I can vote for that one :)

Jim led50jl

Love this album. It was actually the 1st album by Genesis I ever bought. Love how they revisit tracks on the album through the instrumental "Los Endos" ... I play Squonk very loud on headphones after drifting away with "Entangled" and it blows me away every time and to include it in "Los Endos" is just the icing on the cake for me. What a way to finish an album !!! So good you finally get to hear this in full. You need to watch the dvd "Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited Live ; Seconds Out & More" It's on dvd + 2 cds and is incredible. Yep he does "Los Endos" along with Firth of Fifth, The Cinema Show, Suppers Ready, The Musical Box, & The Carpet Crawlers ... oh & Squonk & Dance On a Volcano. + much more. He even uses the same lighting as used on Seconds Out. There are clips on u.t check some out. Great reactions. ..."Squonk" will grow on you because you loved Los Endos ... [ Think about it ? Lol ] Byee Jim X

Jim led50jl

Hi again ..."Squonk" the story is a sad one. It's a very emotionally powerful track....and "Los Endos" means The End and when Nick was drumming away to the final section enjoying the track ...It's "Squonk" !!! ...& the fade out with Phil Collins singing ...faintly in the background ...is from "Suppers Ready" ... "There's an Angel standing in the sun ...... " To finish the album like that gives me goosebumps. Thanks again guys that was wonderful to share and ... maybe when you discover who the sad little chap Squonk is ...you'll love him too. Jim X

It was early in 1976, the dead of winter in upstate New York where I was in my sophomore year of college...I was still in mourning over the departure of Peter Gabriel the year before, and really didn't know what to expect in this follow up to "The Lamb" without him. I knew Phil was taking over the lead vocals, but wasn't quite sure which had been Peter overdubbing and which had been Phil in the background when they were singing together, so except for modest efforts like "More Fool Me" I didn't know for sure so I wasn't prepared for how great he was going to be. This was more than I could have hoped for, and in the best Genesis tradition, had instantly accessible cuts on the album and "growers" that required several listens for fuller appreciation. Looking at the cover art you'll see the album is basically a collection of fairy tales, and the more you can listen to it uninterrupted from beginning to end and know the fables behind them, the more you will see how every song is outstanding in its own way. Yes, Squonk will become one of your favorites as well...

Gary Lewis

And "Los Endos" is just pidgin Spanish...The majority of their audience wouldn't have gotten "Los Fines", which is basically what they're saying in the title of the closing track, which in itself has multiple false (but wonderful) endings and references...

Nick, I respect your opinion about Squonk and Robbery, Assault & Battery. What I've noticed is your admitted difficulty with dense lyrics that support the music. Much of Genesis music is lyrically focused, especially in this era let's say up to Duke. The lyrics to Squonk will break your heart since you're both animal lovers and the song might take on greater meaning like it did when I first heard the song and followed the lyrics. RA&B is similar in that way as well. I agree with you that they are not up there in the best of Genesis pre-Hackett departure era songs but they are certainly not Genesis's worst songs. You guys haven't gotten to the abysmal stuff just yet, but you will, and when you do, you'll think Squonk is a hidden gem, and the same way with RA& battery. Love you both be well and stay safe

PS: you correctly noted that Steve doesn't have much presence on this album, he has a bit more on the next Wind & Wuthering. The 3 other members increasingly rejected his input so he departed after this record.

Gary Lewis

As for the understandable aversion many have to "The Lamb" and its admitted lyrical density (and some might say bloated in length and an example of prog excess), there is gold in them thar lyrics for those willing to mine for it in what Gabriel was saying and why...Just one small example from "Broadway Melody of 1974": "The cheerleader waves her cyanide wand There's a smell of peach blossom and bitter almond Caryl Chessman sniffs the air And leads the parade He knows, in a scent You can bottle all you made"...The gas chamber used for capital punishment for decades in the U.S. kills with cyanide gas, which smells like...almonds! Caryl Chessman was sentenced to death and eventually executed in the gas chamber in 1960, but before he was the controversy surrounding his execution led to questioning of the practice in general and the ultimate elimination of the death penalty in California. Moreover, the gas chamber was the primary form of capital punishment in the U.S. until replaced with lethal injection when the death penalty became legal again in 1976. When you see the deeper meanings and historical context along with the wordplay Gabriel masterfully employs in combination with each individual band member's contributions musically, it becomes artisanal jewelry combining precious stones and exquisite settings. It's not an easy album to love by any stretch, but worth the effort, and always a source of discovery and fuller appreciation.

Hi Nick and Lex, Not a bad Song on this masterpiece 👌 Totally excellent 👌 Ronnie SCOTLAND

Michael Collins

Odd take on “Squonk”, and I have to disagree. Disjointed and all over the place is definitely a strange way to see a pretty straightforward track. Not to mention the GREAT drums and keyboards throughout.

NicknLex

Nick has since then completely changed his mind - it's now one of his favorite tracks. We did a second reaction to it on YouTube; check it out! :) https://youtu.be/BH6eio17RJU

Roberry Assault and Battery reminds me a lot of the song Harold The Barrel on the Nursery Crymes album. It's in the same style.
