Let's Gooooooooooooo !!!! 🎶🔥 Okay, I'm a little excited. I call this one of my Thomas English Muffin albums - I know every nook and cranny on this record, and I'll love it forever! 😎 Can't wait to hear your reaction - cheers ! ❤️

Scott Anderson

Just relived my Junior year in high school with you guys. I played this to death in my Canary yellow 67 Chevelle SS. As you just discovered not a bad song on the album. Me and all my friends were all in Love with Stevie Nicks. Actually It was probably a tie with Ann Wilson from Heart. So happy you have this record to now enjoy whenever you want. A great request and a great reaction and a thrilling race to the end. All the albums that were suggested in the poll would be great to hear you react to. Hurray🎊🎉😄 Can’t wait to hear the next album surprise you have lined up for us. I wasn’t surprised that you had heard most of these songs in some capacity. A great Album now in the can.

Dave

Wonderful reaction. I think this is the first time I'm listening to this with headphones. Previously I missed those distant background vocals and instrumentation. My favorites would be The Chain and GD Woman. Nick, after Songbird you stated, 'perfect". Ironic bc Christines maiden name was Perfect. The reports were that this band was at war with one another at the time but somehow still came out with this masterpiece. As stated in one of my previous comments the album before this titled Fleetwood Mac is also worthy of a listen. Frankly, IMO, I don't think its far behind Rumours. The album after this Tusk is another. At the time Tusk didn't get much love. Similar to Yes Tales from Topographic Oceans but over time it too becomes classic with very good tracks.

Dave

Did you have an 8 track in that Chevelle? I'm still in love with Stevie. Have picture of her and Marilyn on my wall. Never saw FM live but did see Stevie somewhere around 1983 with Walsh opening.

KevB(rewski)

I know you two generally don't like to know a lot of prior info on music before you do reactions, but in this case, imo, it helps to know the background dynamic of the band to truly appreciate how FM created this album under their unusual circumstances. I think many people probably mentioned this in the comments from your earlier reactions, so this isn't breaking news. John McVie, the bass player, was married to Christine McVie, the keyboardist and one of the 3 lead singers. Lindsey Buckingham, the great guitarist and also a lead vocalist and writer, was partners with Stevie Nicks, the 3rd lead singer. BOTH couples were in the process of relationship breakups while writing and recording this album. (The drummer and founder of the band is Mick Fleetwood, all 6'6" of him. He and John McVie started the band in the 60s. Hence, Fleetwood MAC.) The reason that info is important is because these songs were PERSONAL. They were working through their relationships via their songs. They were performing live together for months while breaking up. When you sit back and think about that, these songs take on more meaning and impact. So when Stevie Nicks sings Dreams, and she says "women, they will come and they will go" probably refers to Lindsey's infidelities. When Lindsey is singing the great tune Go Your Own Way, he's telling Stevie that he's letting go, that she should leave him. That's why I called this a "relationship album" in the voting poll. The media caught wind of the band turmoil and called their tour "The Soap Opera Tour". The band named the album Rumours because of the constant false stories in the media. Btw, "Don't Stop" was used by President Bill Clinton in his 2 election victories in the 90s as his campaign theme song (he was a big FM fan). Go Your Own Way was the biggest "rocker" on the album. Lindsey usually wrote the most rocking and intense tunes. Stevie was the lovely mysterious "Gypsy" with the smoky voice. Christine was quieter and usually sang the softer tunes/ballads with her beautiful voice. It truly was an amazing album heard everywhere my junior year in HS in 77. Honestly back then I got a little FMac fatigue. But there is no denying the album's greatness. The previous years album just titled Fleetwood Mac is also chock full of gems and hits. I saw FM finally in concert about a decade or 15 years ago. I've seen Lindsey Buckingham twice do his solo shows in a small venue. He's an amazing guitarist, Nick you should see some of his live videos and the way he finger picks. My favorite song on this album is THE CHAIN, because its not only about the chains and links in their fraying relationships, but its about the links of the band, the chain that held them together as a band. They usually started their concerts with THE CHAIN. Their concert videos show Lindsey and Stevie looking directly at each other as they sing The Chain. And back then after the main set, I believe they would end their concerts with just Christine coming back out, sitting at the piano and playing Songbird solo. Like you've said you've done Aja, The Stranger and Rumours all from 77. Tons of great music that year (beyond the Disco fad). Yes, Going for the One, Genesis Wind and Wuthering and Seconds Out, PF Animals, Kansas Point as you mentioned, ELP Works etc. I didn't go see FMac but in this time period I saw Chicago, ELP, Kansas, Renaissance, Yes, and a few others. Their live concert video filmed when they "reunited" in 1997 called THE DANCE is must watch! Its beautifully recorded. And they play an additional song not included on the album but recorded during those sessions called Silver Springs which is also an emotional gem. Great reaction, thanks!

Phillip Bates

It's funny how you speculate that they are happy as a band here, and that couldn't be further from the truth... I mean, maybe as a band. But the couples were both breaking up and the songs were all about breaking up or looking forward to better times. This is the best break-up album ever, and one of the best albums ever. Lindsey is such a great guitarist and singer/songwriter, as well as crafting their sound, along with Christine, and producing (with the band) this masterpiece. Stevie is a master songwriter, creating so many hits. Mick and John are such a great rhythm section and Christine handles the keys beautifully. And having the three main songwriters and singers gives this album such a diverse range of songs. The whole band wrote The Chain, each member contributing a different piece of the song. The spelling is the British spelling, which Canadians also adopted. Mick, John and Christine are all British. I saw them live back in '83 and had front row seats; it was awesome! I also saw Stevie in '84 (amazing show) and saw Lindsey last year in London and he was incredible.

KevB(rewski)

Marilyn Manson or Monroe? 😆 Steve Walsh or Joe Walsh 😉

JK

Thank you both. And of course you recognized so many songs - this may have had more radio singles than any album in history. It’s a very deceptive album, though. As others have said here, the bright and energetic music often disguises the lyrics, which are usually about heartbreak and betrayal. Four out of five of these people were breaking up with each other. Even “You Make Loving Fun” was probably referring to Christine’s affair at the end of her marriage. I hope this news doesn’t disappoint you - it makes it even more amazing that they managed to pull together an album this magnificent. It was fun to see you suddenly recognize so many songs!

KevB(rewski)

You had a way cooler car than I did Scott. Stevie Nicks was something else with that mysterious Gypsy persona and those eyes. I was still smitten with Linda Ronstadt in 77. (rare opportunity to use the word "smitten")

Scott Anderson

I got the car off of my cousin it had a ton of miles on it and when you turned on the air conditioner your speed dropped from 40 mph to 30 mph. I also had Linda in the 8 track. But it was mostly Steely Dan especially the Royal Scam.

Michele

Cool that you mention Christine. I remember playing her solo LP, “The Legendary Christine Perfect,” recorded 1969-70 between her involvement with Chicken Shack and Fleetwood Mac (re-released in 76). I loved her version of “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Loved Stevie too for what she brought, but Christine is sometimes undervalued. Thanks 😽💖

Michele

Stevie has stated in interviews that it was ridiculous how much cocaine and heartbreak surrounded this time. Thanks 😺💕

Michele

Scott, I was driving a ‘69 Camaro Rally Sport so we were related. Lol 😋❣️

Scott Anderson

That was a nice ride sister 🏁🏎️ . I think That Chevelle was probably the coolest car I ever owned owned. Except for my turquoise 1964 Ford truck when I lived in Santa Fe NM.

Eric Meredith

No wonder this album is a best seller and so iconic. Lex all the songs you

NicknLex

I spent a lot of time in the backseat of that exact car and color as my grandfather had the exact one! It still exists and is in Mexico City. :)

NicknLex

Thank you! But SO glad we didn’t know that at the time! I gave the album a second listen just now this morning and I feel it differently now. The joy of a first clueless reaction is incomparable!! 😃

Eric Meredith

knew were the ones I knew! All songs were good to great. very impressed and glad it was chosen! Love the vocal harmonies and the recording sounds so clean! very enjoyable listen! Truly enjoyed watching you react to it!

Scott Anderson

I did have an eight track in that Chevelle and I had saved up all my money and I had a Quadraphonic stereo. With the first two steely Dan albums on eight track in quadraphonic stereo so I could isolate each speaker. Which was great because I could just listen to an individual player or singer. Now I’m sad 😢. I had it all written, even know it. 😂

Scott Anderson

Small world indeed, That is so cool!😎 but did your grandfather have a Quadraphonic stereo with Steely Dan eight tracks. 😱. I thought I was pretty cool back then, but the girls didn’t, as I recall, they thought Steely Dan was ridiculous. I never could get Linda Rondstat, Stevie Nicks or Nancy Wilson to go for a ride in my car either. It’s probably for the best I would’ve had a heart attack. Sadly I sold that Chevelle back to my cousin and he crashed it to smithereens. He luckily survived but the quadrophonic stereo was obliterated.

NicknLex

No quadrophonic stereo as far as I can remember!! Sad about girls thinking SD was ridiculous, but they missed out!!

Scott Anderson

There is hope for everyone because It’s never to late to learn to like Steely Dan.

Dave

Had a CV marathon ready to go but with Rumours showing on Patreon thought I'd move it back a month or two. Had" Hey Baby" w Chicken Shack. Her "I'd Rather Go Blind" is good. I think we could do a marathon of just that song with original and 4 really good covers.

KevB(rewski)

Yep, its amazing they could all create and perform at this high level while all that was happening. I've always felt that Stevie Nicks has never quite let go of Lindsey Buckingham, even after all these years.

James

Rumours is an iconic album, possibly one of the best albums ever written. In the UK it has been in the top 100 album charts pretty much since it was first released. Really enjoyed your reactions to this, particularly Lex who could now put the band and name to songs that she clearly loves from prior exposure. Like others have said smiled, when you said they must have been really happy when they wrote this, which as you know know could not be further from the truth.

Will IAm

Nice reaction :) I remember when this first came out, everyone was talking about and listening to it. You seemed to like the unusual drum beat of 'Go Your Own Way', you should listen to The Beatles, 'Ticket to Ride' and check out the similarities.

Richard Dobson

If I'm not mistaken Kev, Stevie was not happy that Silver Springs was left off the album. The version on 'The Dance' is superb, and I love her comment during the applause, 'Silver Springs is a great ol' song'!

Richard Dobson

It's official! Alexia has heard all these songs before, but she doesn't know from where! Sorry Lex, just kidding, but this was one of your best reactions. So many classic lines like 'Time is a tricky bugger'! That is so English, just like the second 'U' in Rumours! This is an iconic album and you have heard all the history from the comments above, but I would just like to recognise the rhythm section here. Mick Fleetwood's drums are so good, and John McVie's bass lines make listening with headphones an absolute must! I don't want to be that miserable old bugger (that word again) and harp on about how great they were as a Blues band in the late 60's with Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan before eventually meeting up with Stevie and Lindsey in '75 in the US, but I just did! It's just that Mick and John were at the top of the Blues tree back then, and it shows in their playing on Rumours. Even when I voted for Neil, I said that I'd be happy if Rumours won, so I was and your reactions made for great entertainment. Thanks guys! Looking forward to the next full album.

KevB(rewski)

Btw, if anyone really wants to dive deep on Rumours, they released a FOUR cd deluxe version a few years ago with a full cd of live cuts from the 77 tour and 2 discs of outtakes/early demos to see how the songs developed. There's also one of those Classic Albums DVDS of Rumours similar to the Aja album.

Michael Colford

Christine was having an affair with the lighting guy, not Mick Fleetwood. Stevie had an affair with Mick a copule of years later.

Michael Colford

Such a great raction, Nick and Alexia! You folks really know musical genius when you hear it. They were such a tight band... listen to the intricacy of the music disguised as pop hit after pop hit. And each brought such a unique style, but the magic was when they all came together. Their voices blended together so amazingly well. Mick, John, and Christine formed such a rock solid rhythm section, and Lindsey was a guitar genius. Stevie ended up becoming the front person, but all three of them were such amazing songwriters. And while Rumours was a massive, massive hit, their previous 1975 self-title album is just as good (some might say even better), and their follow-up, Tusk, in 1989 was a bonkers double album that really displays Lindsey Buckingham's sheer musical genius. And now you need to check out some of their live stuff. They were an amazing live band. I'm so glad you both loved them so much! P.S. You had one of Christine McVie's early, early songs on one of my first marathons, called Morning Rain, when she was much more of a blues singer. That was from 1971, I believe.

JK

Thanks for the correction, Michael. I remembered wrong, I’m sure. Hard to keep track of their activities!

KevB(rewski)

Yep, tough decisions had to be made back then with LP time limits. Seems silly now that we've got 80 minute cds. I don't think I ever knew of that song until I saw The Dance video.

KevB(rewski)

I was one of the few in the 70s who never bought one 8 Track or even a pre recorded cassette tape from the store. Almost all my HS buddies had 8 tracks, but the clunky playback where it would switch in the middle of a tune was always odd to me and turned me off. So I skipped all that until the cd era, slow transition from lps to cd. I did buy a lot of blank cassettes and recorded a lot of music off the radio to play in my car cassette decks. Especially live concert stuff, King Biscuit Flower Hour, Westwood One. Wish I had taken better care of all those tapes, but I still have a few great recordings of some live Genesis, like from the 1980 Duke Tour Lyceum show etc.

KevB(rewski)

Yep, that self titled album has a bunch of great tunes. World Turning is one of my faves. Kind of a precursor to The Chain. Those 2 albums really go together.

Scott Anderson

8 tracks were a pretty bad technology all in all they were short lived and there was always a tape hiss. Even if I had saved them all it’s doubtful any would still work or have any audio integrity. I want my money back. 😢😜😳

Dave

I think there was a version of Rumours that included Silver Springs

Stephen Caruso

I have loved Fleetwood Mac for over 52 years

Joss Oakes

Hey friends , back again !! 🎶❤️🎶 I just wanted to add my appreciation for " Oh, Daddy " I mentioned before about how this album changed how I listened to music. Christine McVie changed how I listened to keyboards. Ethereal, bluesy.. as her maiden name reflected, perfect. Cheers ! ❤️✌️

KevB(rewski)

In 77? I wouldn't think so but I didn't buy the album then. When it was put on cd much later it definitely was expanded, don't know what year.

Michele

Lex Lex Lex, I know you don’t remember this, but you and I were driving down the coast with the top down blasting this CD when we stopped in a little roadside tavern and there was Fleetwood Mac performing and and … and you got up on stage and helped sing The CHAIN. THAT’S how you know this album!! You told all of us later: “We will NEVER break the chain” as we did a group pinky-swear. Remember?!! 😊❣️🤪

NicknLex

OMG I want that moment back!!!!! 😭 Can we pleaseeee!!???

Michele

🤗 You’ve got that moment in your memory - it’s part of our shared alternate reality. 😌

NicknLex

Such a great one!!! ✨ 💗

Michelle

I was so lucky to see Fleetwood Mac three years ago with Neil Finn and Mike Campbell (from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) replacing Lindsay Buckingham. They were fantastic and even played some of their late 60s material. So fortunate to see Christine McVie on vocals and keyboard. This album is genius. Their self-titled album from 1975 is as good as this in its own way.

Gary Arnett

NICK from someone who had never used the term Y'all", I had a college prof who pointed out it was less sexist than other terms. I've agreed and used it since.

Gary Arnett

And there are a couple of new artists just as creative, and classy.

KevB(rewski)

Did this college prof deem "Do you all..." a sexist phrase?? Or "Hello, all of you"? 🤔🙄

KevB(rewski)

Was Stevie Nicks playing with them on that tour? I remember hearing about Campbell joining after Tom Petty's death, which I guess makes some sense. How was Christine's voice (and Stevie's if she was there)?

Gary Arnett

No, anything like all of you etc. is all inclusive. She was just pointing out that y'all was inclusive while the mid west term "you guys" was less inclusive.

Michelle

Yes Stevie Nicks was fantastic, her voice has lost a little of the higher range but still got that great rasp. Christine's voice was a little less strong but she was in her mid 70s so who can complain. She didn't tour with FM for many years so it was great to see her live. Their songs never get old.

Debra Brabenec

I voted for Neil, but was just as happy to see you two react to this album. I knew it would knock your sox off! We played both the previous FM album and Rumours at the pizzeria where I worked in college, so, in addition to all the radio hits from both, I heard this music A LOT!! Both are stellar examples of perfect rock/pop albums. I probably had heard national steel guitars before, but I really became more aware of them through Buckingham's playing. "The Chain" begins with its iconic sound. "Go Your Own Way" is currently used in a TV commercial, but I can't recall what for! Your mutual love of music and senses of humor will take you a long way together- it has worked for my husband and me for 29 years now! Thanks for a very fun reaction! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

KevB(rewski)

Ok, lol. I always just viewed "y'all" as lazy southern contraction slang and not as a conscious "gender neutral" linguistic statement.😆

KevB(rewski)

One of the auto companies has fairly recently been using FMac's later tune "Everywhere" sung by Christine, which apparently Immediately hugely spiked up the number of listens/downloads to that one. The power of advertising/marketing is remarkable. (Not sure if car sales spiked up also, lol)

Gary Arnett

I did as well, until she gave her little comment. I think it is southern contraction slang, but she was just commenting on how much more sense it made than "You guys".

JK

Gary, tell us who! Would like to know.

KevB(rewski)

"Nuke" Laloosh> I've got a 911 Porsche with a Quadrophonic Blaupunkt. Crash Davis> Cripes, you don't need a Quadrophonic Blaupunkt! What you need is a curveball!!

KevB(rewski)

Glad you 2 didn't drive off a cliff... 😉 (Thelma and Louise reference)

Calvin Boaz

This may be one of the worst popular albums of all time. Most of it is disposable pop rubbish. If you were going to do a Fleetwood Mac album, you should have chosen something from the Peter Green era - back when Fleetwood Mac was good.

Gail Richie

That era is the worst. OH WELL.

Duncan wright

This album is a classic maybe you should listen to it again

Franck Thibault

"OK, so apparently I know all the songs on this album" So sue me should have been the end of your sentence Alexia 🤣

Laura Moore

I recently watched an old documentary called the making of Rumours. But this album has a speciai place in my life. I loved it in 1977, then fast forward ten years to 1987. My friend and I decided it was be a tremendous idea to save a few pounds and travel to Greece on a three day bus trip from London. The bus was full of people from all over the world and the language barrier was immense. The driver was a wonderful Greek gentleman who played his collection of Greek folk music for the first 24 hours. We slept on the bus by the way. All respect to the wonderful Greek folk scene, but by hour 24 the passengers we're close to bloody revolution. Instead, we pulled our collection of cassettes out of our bags and had a vote. Rumours and Bob Marley's Legend were acceptable to everyone. For the next 48 hours we listened to these two albums on rotation. Every person, from every country knew every lyric of these amazing records and we sung them at the top of our lungs. 35 years later it still makes me smile. The bus trip sucked, but the connection of music brought us all together in a way I'll never forget.

Laura Moore

My husband was a singer/songwriter. He recorded many of his fantastic songs. He died in 2020 from the Covid epidemic. It's been four years, I still can't listen to these recordings. But I will. Grief is a crazy old bugger.

Jonathan Egrie

Great reaction. You know its funny what you can create in music when all of your personal lives are falling apart. That is what happened to this group during the taping of this album. For example, the song "Second hand news" was written by Lindsey Buckingham to Stevie when he found out about her affair with the drummer Mick Fleetwood. "Go your own way" was another song that he wrote at Stevie. And on and on. Now imagine having to travel and play these songs on stage every night with people you despise. John and Christine McVie were in the midst of an ugly divorce. But as Stevie said one time, "Money is a great band aid."
