Wondrous Item, Very Rare (Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster)

An eerie vestige of a cult so ancient that its name has been lost to time, the fingers still twitching with life.

Snare. As a magic action while holding this item, you can cast a 1st level or higher spell to make a number of ranged spell attacks equal to the level of spell cast against creatures you can see within 60 feet of you (if the level of the spell cast is 6th level or higher, you only make 5 ranged attacks). On a hit, the target takes 2d6 necrotic damage and is grappled by spectral hands which erupt from this item.

Until the grapple ends, the target has disadvantage on wisdom saving throws and can’t teleport. The arms can be attacked and destroyed (AC 16; 30 hit points; vulnerability to radiant damage; immunity to bludgeoning, nonmagical piercing and slashing, poison, and psychic damage).

You can grapple up to 5 creatures at a time using this item. If you attack a different creature while 5 creatures are already grappled by this item, you choose which arms to keep and which to end.

If you let go of this item or if you have the incapacitated condition, the arms dissipate and all grappled creatures are no longer grappled.

Close. As a bonus action, you can force each creature grappled by this item to make a DC 17 strength saving throw. On a failed saving throw the target is pulled up to 30 feet towards you.

Curse: Hungering Gate. This item is cursed, a fact that is revealed only when the Identify spell is cast on the item. Using its Snare property extends the curse to you until you are targeted by a Remove Curse spell or similar magic. While cursed this way you cannot unnatune from this item.

Whenever you use the Snare property of this item you must make a d100 check, the DC of which increases each time by the level of the spell spent. On a failed save, the power of this totem turns against you instead, and you disappear as you are transported to an eldritch dimension within the totem, which drops to the ground. You take psychic damage equal to the DC, and you return to the space this item occupies or the nearest unoccupied space at the start of your next turn.

Once you suffer the effects of this curse, the DC is reset to 0. Whenever you finish a long rest, the DC is decreased by 1d10.
