i feel like paula always felt like an outsider

briana

Igli you're kind of harsh on Paula. I think y'all kind of missed a lot of why Paula did what she did with Kai because y'all talked over those pivotal scenes. Paula is the token friend of color who's just enough of a minority to make Olivia seem like she's "woke" but not too much of a minority to close Olivia out of spaces. Paula was right, this is Olivia's tribe. As for why she went on vacation with them, it's probably a lot like why Rachel married Shane. These situations are complex. Yeah it's shitty what happened to the Mossbachers but in the grand scheme of things it's nothing compared to what will happen to Kai and what has happened to Kai's people. Paula will always be a woman of color, there’s no blending in or anything she can really do to not be an outsider.

Shane is what happens when you get on that Don Julio and act a Foolio!

Yes now we can get to my favorite season. If you thought season 1 was crazy ya’ll aren’t ready for season 2.

I just wish we could have seen a win for Belinda after everyone was trauma dumping on her all season

briana

Wait... SHITTED ON EM!

Yulian

The thing that bothered me about how Belinda walked off on Rachel was that she OFFERED to be there for support. Rachel didn't just come to her out of nowhere. If Belinda didn't open that door, then Rachel wouldn't have come to her. She took out her frustration about Tanya on Rachel.

Yulian

It wasn't Paula's place to steal from her friend's family and using race as a justification is really low. We're not talking about a systemic organization, but Paula got a free vacation from a family friend, and then got her friend's parents injured. Paula knows they're ignorant, and she also knows Olivia isn't a good friend because of the past history of Olivia stealing her guy, but she still stays friends with her to reap the benefits of their wealth.

Yulian

I honestly don't feel bad for Belinda, she was the one that said Rachel can come to her and then when she did, she projected her frustration about the situation with Tanya onto Rachel. Belinda didn't set any boundaries, and also, she was using Tanya to get herself an investment so, it's not like she actually cared about Tanya. That was evident when she had the phone call with her son and he said do whatever it takes to get the bag. And as for Paula, she knows that Olivia isn't a good friend because of their past conflicts, and she knows that her family is ignorant yet she still sticks around, so I don't empathize for her. Neither Paula nor Belinda were wronged directly, Paula chose to try and get her friend's family robbed and caused injury, and Belinda's relationship with Tanya was completely transactional as well so, their endings were a result of their own decisions.

Sam

I think that was just kinda the last straw for Belinda, and she reached her breaking point in that moment. but yeah I definitely see what you’re saying; I felt for Rachel too because she so desperately needed someone to talk to in that moment

Quinn pulled a Home Alone at the end

I am only able to see the first few seconds of the video they are reacting to then it fades away into this timecode. Is this happening for anyone else?

briana

Yes. It’s so you can sync with them. All of their videos are like this for full length.

briana

@Yulian Excuse you, weirdo. I’m not using race just to pull something out of my ass, I’m basing this off of what the show is telling me about these people. You seem to have issues reading the bigger picture, especially when it comes to a show like this. Major themes from this season are about wealth, power dynamics, and colonialism. Placing all of the blame on Paula is not the point of the show nor is it what Mike White was trying to say. The fact of the matter is that everyone on here from Rachel + Shane, Paula + Olivia, and Belinda + Tanya are in these complex relationships that are automatically unbalanced for different reasons. We are supposed to be observing that with an understanding that life is not so black and white. This isn’t a fairytale kids' show with an overarching moral between right and wrong. And for you to frame it like I’m the one bringing up race just to make my point is low and not smart.

Sam

Wonder which one of you left this comment 🤔

Sam

Your take is actually missing a lot of what the show is trying to say. As Briana said, The White Lotus isn’t about clear-cut right or wrong. it’s about messy power dynamics, privilege, and how people navigate systems they didn’t create but are still affected by. Paula is not just “stealing from her friend’s family” for fun either. The show gives us enough context to understand why she did what she did, and race and colonialism are a huge part of that context. She’s clearly uncomfortable the whole trip, stuck in this weird in-between place where she’s close enough to benefit from Olivia’s privilege but never fully accepted. When she found out that Kai was arrested she was devastated, and it shows how powerless she really is in the end, no matter how “invited” she was into that world.

Yulian

I didn't say that you were using race as a justification, I wrote that Paula used race as a justification to convince Kai to steal from Olivia's family. So I'm not sure why your automatic response was to get defensive and call me names instead of having a normal discussion but anyways, I'll respond in a civilized manner. In my opinion, that decision was a clear cut choice. Yes, in the bigger picture there is an imbalance, and that applies systemically in society. But if we are focusing on this specific family, and the specific friendship between Paula and Olivia, she had absolutely no right to do that. And if she feels like an outsider and as though she's being somehow dismissed by the family, then she should stop being friends with Olivia, especially knowing that Olivia hasn't been a good friend to her in the past. Whatever your identity, status, privilege, or whatever other label you want to put on it, if you are friends with someone and conspire to have them or their family robbed, it's wrong point blank period.

briana

@Yulian: That was not what Paula was saying at all, and regardless, the purpose of my comment (that you felt the need to reply to, so I responded accordingly) was to offer a different perspective. You claim to understand the various dynamics and what the show is saying, yet you continue to double down on a very narrow-minded perspective. Simply agree to disagree and keep it pushing. I did not ask for your opinion to be honest.
